Why are mental health benefits becoming more important?

Mental health benefits are more important now than ever. These unprecedented times have been taxing on employees’ mental health as we try to navigate the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether it’s working at home, going into the office, or a hybrid model, many employees are experiencing burnout, lack of motivation, decrease in productivity, and ultimately attrition. Mental health benefits can help cope with daily stress and/or challenges. Benefits that support positive mental health can boost resilience and allow our employees to live their best lives and flourish both in their personal and professional lives. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, there is a heightened risk of anxiety and depression due to fear of uncertainty, financial insecurities, lack of social connectivity, amongst others, so it’s important to ensure that we have the appropriate programs in place to support our employees and their families to navigate through this pandemic.

At Elsevier, we believe that mental health training and programs should be targeted, tailored, and sustained. As well as offering mental health awareness training to all our employees, we have rolled out a course designed specifically for the people leaders in our business – we believe that in order for mental health programs to benefit employees, they must also be offered to their managers. We have trained 40 Mental Wellbeing First Aiders across the globe, but instead of adopting a standardized course, we engaged a top industry expert to develop a course that is tailored to our business and to the different cultures within which we operate. We also run a number of all-employee global webinars across the year on topics ranging from stress and burnout to energy, grief, and men’s mental health, along with smaller group workshops on topics such as overwhelm and mindfulness. It is key to offer both tailored and well-rounded support to our hugely diverse and complex employee base so that everyone can tap into what benefits them when they need it.

Why are mental health benefits becoming more important?

We believe that our people are our strength and most important asset – currently, people all over the world are exposed to uncertainty and change like never before. Thanks, in main, to the Covid-19 pandemic. The impact on mental health is unavoidable which is why it has never been more important that businesses have a solid foundation of mental health benefits. We want our people to know that it’s ok to not be ok, that they can ask for help, that they can bring their authentic selves to work whether they are thriving, languishing or simply surviving. Mental health benefits are an important way to communicate our stance on this and to walk the walk, rather than just talk the talk. Education and information is power and we want to give our community the best possible tools to invest in their mental health.

In the wake of the numerous challenges facing employees, Algolia began offering voluntary Listening Circles as a safe space to share their feelings, concerns, and feedback on the impact of the world around us with one another. These sessions are open to all employees for the purpose of catharsis and healing. To further support our ongoing effort to provide care for our employees’ well-being, employees also have access to ‘Modern Health’, a wellness tool that provides digital wellness content and 1:1 care with licensed providers. Our agreement with Modern Health provides users with four sessions with a therapist and/or four sessions with a coach at no cost. We also encourage our people managers to actively discuss well-being with their teams and monitor their PTO and encourage time off if needed.

Why are mental health benefits becoming more important?

At Algolia, we know our employees are our most critical asset and caring for them is fundamental to our success. Our employees were very open about the psychological impact of stress from the Covid-19 pandemic, the change to remote working, our rapid growth, the fast-paced environment of a tech start-up, and the overall turmoil in the world. In response, we’ve implemented monthly Wellness days, in addition to a generous paid time off policy. These Wellness Days are global employee single-day holidays, when all our offices are closed so that everyone is able to take a break at the same time.
