Stack Overflow is a company that is dedicated to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for its employees and community members. The company’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) is reflected in the projects it undertakes and how employees interact with each other.
“While interviewing with Stack Overflow, I was impressed by the breadth and depth of its community, where anyone can learn new skills that can better their lives and ultimately the lives of others. I wanted to grow my career with the company and be a part of its impact on the world,” said Samantha Chu, Financial Planning & Analysis Lead at Stack Overflow.
The company encourages its employees to take on leadership roles through mentoring and leading company projects, which helps to foster a culture focused on its core values of “learn, share, and grow.”

One of the projects that Chu is particularly proud of her involvement in is the company’s first DEIB KPI creation process. Led by DEIB Director Tabitha Calhoun, one of the things this multi-year project focuses on is gathering data and bridging gaps related to internal demographic representation and supplier diversity. “I am proud of this project because employees from all levels and orgs are voluntarily choosing to work beyond their expected job responsibilities for a common goal: to provide an opportunity for every user and employee to be a valuable member of Stack’s community,” says Chu. The ultimate goal of this project is to make Stack Overflow a model for diversity and inclusion in the tech industry.
The company’s investment into inclusivity starts with people. At the annual company-wide meetup, Chu attended a session between the Moxie and LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Groups and instantly felt included and welcomed by her colleagues. “Though I hadn’t met many of these members before,” she said, “…people immediately and warmly included me in a board game they were playing. At the end of the evening, I ended up at a small table where we genuinely got to know one another. This night was one of my favorite experiences at the meetup.” The Meetup is an annual gathering where all employees, regardless of their department or location, have the opportunity to come together is a clear indication of the organization’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment.

One of the ways that the company is able to create such a supportive and inclusive culture is through its dedication to its product. Stack Overflow is an online community where anyone can learn new skills and ask questions about programming and technology. The community is made up of developers, programmers, and other tech professionals who share their knowledge and experience with others. Stack Overflow was built on the principle of sharing knowledge and helping others, which creates a culture of mutual respect and support.

In October 2022, they launched Overflow Offline, to work with a non-profit, Kiwix, to ensure that an up-to-date version of their dataset is easily available for those who need it, and will work to improve its readability and reduce its size so there is less friction for end users. Unlocked Labs is one of the organizations they’re working with, but there are many others, spanning from the justice system, to scientific research, to university education in areas where internet access is scarce.
Stack Overflow’s commitment to DEIB, accessibility, and the professional and personal growth of its employees is reflected in the projects it undertakes and the way that employees interact with each other. The company’s culture is one of mutual respect and support, and this is further reinforced by its dedication to its product and the principles of sharing knowledge and helping others. Stack Overflow’s commitment to these values makes it an attractive place to work for job seekers who value diversity, inclusion, and the opportunity to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.
