IBM’s theme for this year’s Black History Month is “Elements of the Past, Catalysts of the Future.” Deservingly so, the past few years have been focused on societal inequities, social injustice, and biases. In short, elements that were impacting IBMers and the world. This year much of our programming is focused on self. Our events and activities are curated to provide opportunities for our Black Community members and Allies to truly shift focus to the most important part of the equation – discovering one’s motivations, intentions, and talents. Re-establishing a strong self-identity allows for better career progression, the ability to positively impact the greater community, and be that catalyst of change. Career Development, Cultural Awareness, and Innovation are additional focus areas that we have invited external SMEs to speak upon with IBMers. Our Business Resource Groups are also creating programs aligned to the thematic.
Why is it important for your company to recognize Black History Month?
In 1968, IBM named George Carter, a Black man, as the company’s first Director of Equal Opportunity Programs. While those before Mr. Carter laid the groundwork for such an opportunity, this positioning formally cemented our long commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, which we have exhibited for over 100 years. Diversity and Inclusion are core to who we are as a company. Not only do we acknowledge and celebrate the contributions and culture of the Black Community, but also seven other diverse communities at IBM: Women, LGBTQ+, Hispanic, Pan-Asian, Native American/Indigenous People, People with Diverse Abilities, and Veterans. This is who we are, even beyond the celebration month, with yearlong engagement.

Next, we’ve renewed our social impact commitments with the California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ), Sporting Equals, and the Los Angeles Bicycle Academy (LABA) to help ensure the “work of the work” is getting done, supporting via our platform and partnership. Finally, we’re celebrating and uplifting our Black cycling and running communities through weekly in-game events, workouts, and podcasts featuring prominent Black athletes and influencers like Rahsaan Bahati, Jools Walker, and the Level Up Movement.
