How These Companies Celebrate Black History Month

The mission of GE Vernova’s African American Forum’s (AAF) Employee Resource Group (ERG) is to strengthen African American employees at GE through professional development, career management and mentoring that will enable retention and growth. The forum also works to strengthen the bonds between GE and its local African American communities. Since its founding 30 years ago, the AAF has played a critical role in helping to build a more inclusive environment through strategic initiatives focused on attracting, developing, promoting, and retaining African American talent within the company. The local chapters emphasize another goal of the AAF: giving back to the communities where GE operates. Local chapters plan community service projects throughout the year, such as holiday food drives, dinners for homeless residents, charity walks and assistance to Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit housing organization. For Black History Month, celebrated in the U.S. in February, chapters hold events like art exhibits and dessert socials. They also help raise money for the Lloyd Trotter Scholarship Fund, which has collected more than $2 million for college students since 1995.

Why is it important for your company to celebrate this?

We believe diversity makes us more competitive and creates value for our customers, shareholders, and employees. We believe in the value of each person’s unique identity, background, and experiences and are committed to fostering an inclusive culture, where everyone feels empowered to do their best work because they feel accepted, respected, and that they belong. Simply said, embracing diverse teams and perspectives better equips GE Vernova to build a world that works.

HashiCorp celebrates Black History Month by honoring black voices – past, present, and future. We pay tribute to history by holding sessions, led by the Blacksmiths, to share the wisdom of those who have paved the way before us, and to reflect on the significance of historical events. We celebrate community by hosting sessions that allow us to appreciate the rich aspects of black culture, such as cooking traditional dishes, sharing our stories, and learning from each other.

Why is it important for your company to celebrate this?

It is important for HashiCorp to celebrate Black History Month because there is so much to learn, share, and celebrate. Celebrating comes in various forms and education serves as a significant way to remind us how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. It’s also important to share and highlight the greatness of the Black community during this month because while we’ve gone through and will continue to go through hardships as a people, we need to make time to celebrate our victories and happiness. Balance is really key here, especially when it comes to Black employees in the workforce because it makes sure we’re seen and helps create discussions and bonding through the events we plan. For one person to walk away from celebrating this month at my company learning something new or deciding to get involved… that makes a difference.
