Most People Have Had Only 1 or 2 Jobs in the Last Five Years

It may feel like the average person these days changes jobs with every new moon, but that’s hardly the case.

About three-quarters of workers have had only one or two full-time jobs in the last five years, according to the latest reading of an ongoing query by Comparably. That’s in line with national averages: according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the typical American worker has been in their current job for a little over four years.

Looking a bit closer, it’s true that people in tech appear to change jobs slightly more often than those in other industries — 24% of those in tech have changed jobs at least three times in the last five years vs. 19% of those in other industries.
