We examine the company cultures of five companies involved in the Big Data industry today. How do employees at DellEMC, SAP, Splunk, Teradata and VMWare feel about the cultures of the companies they work for? We used Comparably’s employee-submitted reviews and ratings to paint a picture of how satisfied the employees of these Big Data companies are. We’ll look at them for overall culture, as well as CEO, Compensation, Perks & Benefits, Diversity, and Outlook ratings as scored by their employees.
OVERALL CULTURE

We’ve seen evidence of VMWare’s popularity with its employees before, and today’s first little gold trophy – for Overall Culture – going to that company begins to build the case that their workers’ fervor is indeed widely embraced from within . SAP scored well, also in the A range. Teradata and DellEMC don’t have similarly sturdy cultures, at least according to these employees’ opinions.
DellEMC: “I would be more strict on who and when people can work from home. If you reduce the amount of time people actually interact with each other, it is difficult to have a sustained culture.”
SAP: “SAP embraces employee diversity, equal pay/equal opportunity, the company focuses on continuing to expand the percentage of women in leadership positions (currently ~25%, next target to hit 33% soon), and SAP isn’t an ‘evil company’ – SAP has military veteran and autism spectrum hiring programs and the company supports many social programs, giving employees the opportunity to donate their time to support local charity and non-profit organizations (during work hours).”
Splunk: “Highly pressurized work environment. Minimal training phase before a very heavy work loads.”
Teradata: “The culture has been improving over the last couple years but still has a ways to go.”
VMWare: “I love our Corporate Culture. A Fortune 500 company with the heart of a start up!”
CEO & LEADERSHIP

SAP’s William McDermott beats Splunk’s Douglas Merritt by two percentage points in the CEO & Leadership round, which measures employee sentiment towards the Chief Exec and other elements of company leadership. All five of the CEOs above scored reasonably well, with only Teradata’s Oliver Ratzesberger DellEMC’s Michael Dell flirting with less-than-passing grades.
DellEMC: “Overall, they have a very positive impression for the CEO. The simulation between the Dell and EMC employees took some time, but the majority believe it is getting there. It is a huge company with over 100,000 employees, so there are always going to be ups and downs.”
SAP: “I think most people see Bill as an inspirational and driven leader. He is outstanding with clients, and is an amzingly optimistic person. His book provides fair insight into his personality.”
Splunk: “Leadership are acutely aware of where the industry is heading. They continually upgrade & invent Splunk solutions to keep this company as the go to leader in the Security analytics & ITOA industry.”
Teradata: “I appreciate Oliver’s commitment to Inclusion & Diversity.”
VMWare: “Pat is awesome and very personable. A pleasure to listen to. I know things could be improved, I’m just not sure how. That is why I’m not a C-level.”
COMPENSATION

VMWare takes it for their substantial compensation package, with employees saying their focus on retention is palpable. SAP and Splunk also distinguish themselves in the Compensation category, with Teradata and DellEMC rating scores closer to average.
DellEMC: “Stock/RSU compensation is very poor. That robs employees of wealth in the long term compared to their peers working for other tech companies.”
SAP: “Base and commission are equally weighted.”
Splunk: “Would like to be able to increase my base salary. My OTE has been the same for the last 5 years. The only way to increase that would be to move to a different team or into the field.”
Teradata: “Teradata should increase pay by 20%”
VMWare: “They pay very well and continue to do so to keep us here.”
PERKS & BENEFITS

That’s another win for VMWare, in the Perks & Benefits category. Splunk also scored very well here, with SAP not far behind. DellEMC and Taradata get passing grades but employees don’t seem to feel much enthusiasm for either company’s paychecks here in the Compensation category.
DellEMC: “So there is medical, dental, vision, 401k, for your kids there is college coaching and merit scholarships possible, we also get Dell EMC discounts for our personal purchase. And almost forgot, there is some funds available for tuition assistance.”
SAP: “Lots of company events, activities and local events.”
Splunk: “A lot of holidays, a lot of pto, good amount of sick days, volunteer days, rsus.”
Teradata: “Teradata has an unlimited vacation policy.”
VMWare: “All employees have access to the standard benefits that all large companies provide, healthcare, 401k, stock purchase plans, etc.”
DIVERSITY

A rout begins to firm up for VMWare, who are the only company among our five to rate in the A range for Diversity, which measures how employees of color feel about their jobs and companies. SAP, Splunk, and Teradata rate solid Bs, but DellEMC gets the worst score for any company we’ve seen yet today with a C-. More effort and an evidence of diversity initiative is certainly expected, especially from a tech giant.
DellEMC: “I work in sales & pre-sales, and there are plenty of men and women of all ages and ethnicities.”
SAP: “Our team is very diverse.”
Splunk: “They are diverse.”
Teradata: “Open, supportive of inclusion and diversity.”
VMWare: “I feel it is diverse enough. The company is very active in hiring females.”
OUTLOOK

DellEMC: “EMC is fully aware that while there is competition, the quality of their products and their ‘Value Add’ are far supiorior to similar companies.”
SAP: “The company has the potential to be truly great.”
Splunk: “I’m excited about the future prospects of the company and my career.”
Teradata: “Teradata employees are the best and most knowledgeable in the industry about data, BI and analytics domain. We learn a lot from each other and lead clients to the right direction.”
VMWare: “I like the autonomy I’m given and the variety of challenges.”
VMWare’s employees are righteously enthused about where their company is going and are thrilled to be along for the ride. They win their fifth trophy today in the Outlook category and that means VMWare wins today. Those with an interested in Big Data would do well to look into opportunities at VMWare and also at SAP, who scored a slightly lower A+ rating for Outlook. Splunk also seems to offer some evidence of a healthy modern cultures, but work needs do be done in that regard at both DellEMC and Teradata if they don’t want to start hemhorraging talented employees to other tech companies
