Study: The Cities Where People Expect the Highest Raises

San Francisco and New York are known for being some of the most expensive cities in the country, so it’s no wonder that people living there expect some of the highest raises each year.

While 21% of people across the country say they expect at least a 10% raise each year, the rate was 29% in San Francisco and 28% in New York City. That’s according to the latest reading of an ongoing poll by Comparably of more than 10,000 workers predominantly across the technology industry.

The results are less surprising when you consider how high the cost of living is in each city. According to recent estimates, it costs $120,000 a year in San Francisco and $99,000 a year in New York to live comfortably, well above the average income nationally.

The lowest expectations for raises were in Phoenix and Seattle, where just 15% and 14% of people (respectively) said they expect at least 10% a year.

The results show that raises at 10% or above were least expected: just 15% of people expect a 10% raise and 6% of people expect a 15% raise.
