The Healthcare Industry: Culture Showdown

What is it like to work for one of the big U.S. healthcare companies? How well-compensated are workers in the healthcare industry? Five of the biggest and richest U.S. Healthcare companies – Aetna, Anthem, HCA Healthcare, Medtronic and UnitedHealth – go head-to-head in the realm of company culture for today’s Culture Showdown. We looked at Comparably’s employee-submitted data for overall culture and five other categories to determine where someone looking for a career in the Healthcare Industry might go first if they want to work for a company that takes great care of its employees.

OVERALL CULTURE

Anthem: “They take a big company and make it feel like a personal company.”

Aetna: “While they talk a lot about culture, at Aetna there really isn’t one.”

HCA Healthcare: They do a good job of planning fun events for employees and also giving back to our community.”

Medtronic: There is an upbeat air. Innovation and cooperation is the culture.”

UnitedHealth Group: There are a ton of offices and so it really depends on which office you are in. I’ve been in a number of them and all generally have the same professional, positive vibe.”

CEO

Anthem: “For all the requirements of my job, I feel I should be paid more.”

Aetna: “Very underpaid and raises/bonuses are not worth anything.”

HCA Healthcare: “Nurses in other states make more with less experience.”

Medtronic: “Annual raises and competitive wages.”

UnitedHealth Group: It is a fair compensation, although I have seen other employees not get paid fairly or raise when they gain a new degree or specialty.”

PERKS & BENEFITS

Anthem: “The annual incentive plan can come out to a significant amount of money.”

Aetna: “Tuition reimbursement, student loan assistance, and wellness programs.”

HCA Healthcare: “The 401k match. I’ve been here for 27 years. HCA matches 9% for me!”

Medtronic: “Retirement, time off, tuition reimbursement, health insurance.”

UnitedHealth Group: The medical is okay but it’s not great. Currently the plan without an HSA covers 80% of eligible expenses after satisfying a $1100.00 deductible.”

DIVERSITY

Anthem: “We are very diverse and I enjoy meeting new people.”

HCA Healthcare: “I’m proud to say I think the team I’m on in is wonderfully diverse.”

OUTLOOK

HCA Healthcare wins another category here with Outlook. That makes four wins total, which means HCA wins the whole Showdown. In fact, the only categories HCA didn’t win for today’s Culture Showdown were Perks & Benefits (which went to Aetna) and Compensation (which went to Medtronic.) There’s no doubt that HCA has the most satisfied employees, if this match-up is any indication.

Looking quickly at the other companies, we can see its good news that Aetna won the Perks category, as it got straight C’s from its employees in every other category. Anthem got mostly B’s. Finally, UHG and Medtronic had grades that were generally all over the map, suggesting some areas need improvement and others are satisfactory.
