Murphy explains, “I think that one of the most surprising things that new people joining the organization learn about is that we do a company-wide cruise every year.  And I’ve been doing this for over 20 years, allowing everybody who wants to attend to come down here to Florida. We do a three- to four- day cruise to the Bahamas where we spend time in sessions, continuing education and educating our people about the path ahead.” Murphy stressed the value of these initiatives, emphasizing how they align and unify the team even during leaner times.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced IZEA to transition to a fully remote work environment. Rather than viewing this as a setback, Murphy and the leadership team saw it as an opportunity to reevaluate the company’s staffing approach. “Prior to the pandemic, we had about 20,000 square feet of office space in Orlando that was our headquarters. And about 70% of our staff was in that space,” said Murphy. They embraced remote work, enabling IZEA to attract the best talent worldwide. To expound on that change, Murphy explained, “Fast forward to today and only 30% of our people are still in the Orlando area at all. We have no office and we have no intention of having an office. We have people in 95 cities and 12 different countries, including Canada, China, India and the U.K.”  The focus on company culture intensified during this transition, with dedicated resources ensuring team members remained engaged, supported, and connected. Despite the lack of physical office space, IZEA’s culture continues to thrive through channels like Slack and dedicated culture-focused roles.

Three months later, the company raised additional funds, and everything was restored to its previous state.
