There are any number of things that a person might change about their job. But what’s the top one?
Comparably asked users what their number one priority would be if they were the boss. The data comes from the anonymous salary records of almost 26,000 Comparably users across the tech sector.
Improve vision/strategy was the No. 1 response overall
Thirty-one percent of respondents said they would “better vision/strategy,” making it the top response overall. The next most popular responses were “increase employee pay” (23%) and “improve office culture” (23%). The least popular responses were “make a better product” (15%) and “cut expenses” (8%). 
Women ranked ‘increase employee pay’ at nearly the same level of importance as ‘better vision/strategy.’
Twenty-six percent of women surveyed chose “increase employee pay,” making it the second-most popular response by a percentage point after “better vision/strategy” (27%). By comparison, 21% of men selected “increase employee pay” and 33% chose “better vision/strategy.”
Gen Zers chose ‘increase employee pay’ as their top choice
The only age group to choose something other than “better vision/strategy” as their top choice were those between 18 and 25. Twenty-six percent of them chose “increase employee pay.”

Finance workers chose office culture; admin and customer support chose pay
Workers in every department – from engineering to design to HR to legal – chose “increase employee pay” as their top answer except for finance, customer support, and admin. The most popular answer among finance workers was “improve office culture” (29%), while the most popular answer among those who work in customer support and admin was “increase employee pay” (37% and 33%, respectively.)
