Twenty-seven percent of women employed at technology companies say they have been sexually harassed at work, according to data compiled by Comparably.
That’s only slightly higher than at non-tech companies, where 24% of women say they have been sexually harassed.
The results, culled from more than 10,000 workers who responded to an ongoing query on Comparably, illustrate a problem that has bubbled over for Silicon Valley firms in recent years.
The results are as of May 30.
Sexual harassment by department
According to Comparably’s data, 36% of women in IT say they have been sexually harassed, the highest rate of any department. Women in operations and business development reported the next highest rates, at 32% and 31% respectively.
Sexual harassment rates for men, while at 7% overall, appeared to be prevalent in certain sectors as well: 22% of men in legal roles, 19% in administrative roles and 12% in customer support reported having been sexually harassed.
By age
Rates of sexual harassment appeared to be stronger among the older set of respondents. Sixteen percent of men and women aged 56 to 65 reported having been sexually harassed, compared to 12% of those 26 to 30.
By work experience
Sexual harassment rates appeared to decline the longer a person spent at one particular company. Rates for workers just starting out at their company were at 16%; rates for workers with a decade or more of experience at their company were at 11%.
From a diversity standpoint
African American and Hispanic or Latino workers reported the highest rates of facing sexual harassment, at 19% and 17%, respectively. Rates of sexual harassment were at 12% among caucasians and 7% among Asians.
By city
Workers in Los Angeles and Phoenix reported the highest rates of sexual harassment (16% and 15% respectively) while workers in Salt Lake City (8%) reported the lowest.
