32% of Young Workers Believe Robots Could Take Their Jobs in 10 Years

The robots are coming — and it’s the youngest generation who’s most certain that their jobs are at stake.

Thirty-two percent of tech workers aged 18 to 25 say they think their job could be replaced by a robot in the next 10 years, according to the latest reading of an ongoing query by Comparably. That’s the highest percentage among any age group.

As age increases, people feel less confident that robots could replace their jobs, hitting a low of 12% among 56 to 60-year-olds.

The same pattern could be seen when the results were analyzed by work experience: entry-level workers had the highest rates while workers with 10 years or more experience had the lowest.

Women more concerned than men

Twenty-three percent of women say they think robots may take their jobs in the next 10 years. That’s slightly higher than the 17% of men who saiy the same.

Customer support, admin most affected

Thirty-four percent of workers in customer support say they feel their jobs could be replaced by robots in the next decade. That was the most of any department. The next highest rate was seen among employees in administrative roles (28%).

Workers in product and executive roles reported the lowest rates of feeling this way (12% and 13%, respectively).

The latest reading is as of Nov. 2 and includes the responses of more than 10,000 workers across the technology industry.
