  • Bradycardia is based on the words Brady meaning slow and Cardia meaning heart.

Bradycardia is a heart rate that's less than 50 beats per minute. Specifically, for Kardia(tm), Instant Analysis Bradycardia indicates a mild form of bradycardia not due to atrial fibrillation, between 40 to 50 beats per minute. The normal range for heart rate depends on your age and physical condition; for example, a heart rate less than 50 beats per minute can be normal in healthy adults and in athletes, and during sleep. While bradycardia can be normal, it can also be caused by thyroid disease, sleep apnea, certain medications, or damage to the heart tissue from heart disease or from the aging process. When the heart beats too slowly, you may have no symptoms or you may experience dizziness, chest pain or pressure*, lack of energy, or shortness of breath. The treatment for bradycardia depends on what is causing the slow heart rate, as well as your symptoms. Mild bradycardia with no symptoms usually requires no treatment. Bradycardia may be treated with medications, or by adjusting current medications. For severe bradycardia, a pacemaker may be recommended, which is a small device implanted under the skin that can speed up the heart rate as needed.

*Chest pain or pressure is a medical emergency. Contact a physician or emergency services if you have questions or are concerned about any symptoms.

  • If you are having trouble recording a clean and consistent signal try the following

    Get yourself ready

Take a seat in chair at a table, and be in a seated, relaxed position

When recording from the hands, relax the arms and hands to reduce muscle noise.

If your fingers are dry, try moistening them with a bit of water

    Prepare your devices:

Be sure your smartphone or tablet is unplugged and that no headphones or other accessories are in use

Turn off hearing aids and avoid being near other items that may cause interference, such as computers

Make sure Mains Filter is set appropriately for your geographical location. This can be adjusted under the Kardia app Settings.

Positioning your hands and the device

Place both your phone and Kardia device on the table in front of you

Ensure the Kardia device is within 6 inches of your smart phones microphone (usually at the bottom portion that you would normally speak in to, iPads normally have the microphone near the top)

You may rest your forearms and hands on table in front of you and let your finger tips rest on the Kardia EKG electrodes like is shown in the image below:

    During the Recording

Make sure that both you and the mobile device remain still during ECG recordings. Movement during recordings will cause noise in the tracing

Keep a light touch on the electrodes no need to squeeze or press down too firmly

You can also watch a short video below on how to take a clean EKG.

  • A new battery should last 1-2 years of normal use (2-3 readings a day)

Battery is a CR2016 available at most general-purpose stores

KardiaMobile should be taken out of phone clip to replace battery

Battery is on back of door behind battery door

    Detailed Steps for Battery Replacement

To replace the battery in your KardiaMobile EKG, you will need to access the battery compartment located on the back of the device. KardiaMobile may be attached to the back of your phone using a phone clip. If so, you will need to remove the device from the clip.

To remove your device from the clip, firmly slide it out of the open end of the clip with both thumbs.

It's possible for KardiaMobile to be in a phone clip without it being attached to your phone. If this is the case, follow the same steps above to remove the device from the clip.

The battery compartment is located on the back of the device. Turn it over and look for the round battery cover. Insert a pen, or other similarly shaped object into the notch to pop the battery cover off.

Replace the old battery with a new coin cell battery, 3.0V size '2016'.These batteries can be found at most general-purpose stores.

When installing the battery, make sure that:

the protective sticker is removed from the battery (if applicable)

the battery is inserted with the plus sign (+) facing up.

Insert the battery under the two metal tabs.

Now replace the cover. The single tab on the cover fits into the slot on the left side. Insert that tab first.

Press down on the right corner of the cover to close. You will hear a click when it is closed.

Press down on the right corner of the cover to close. You will hear a click when it is closed.

A new battery should last 1-2 years of normal use (2-3 readings a day), if you feel you have to replace the battery in a matter of days, weeks, or months, please contact support as it is less likely to be a battery issue.

  • Kardia has algorithms cleared by the FDA to give EKG results of Normal, Bradycardia, Tachycardia or Possible AFib. As a medical device, Kardia is not cleared to detect or communicate any other results, rhythms, or arrhythmias.

That being said, the Kardia devices are single lead EKGs, therefore any arrhythmia that is present in Lead I EKG can be present in your Kardia EKG recording. To have your EKG reviewed for other arrhythmias you may share them with your physician to review.

  • There are a few reasons why you may be getting noisy or unreadable recordings. Since KardiaMobile communicates with your smart phone via high frequency ultrasound, it is important that you keep the device within a few inches of the microphone and eliminate any sources of electric interference. Here are some of the common things to look for:

Confirm your smart phone or tablet is not plugged in or charging while recording an EKG

Move away from sources of electrical interference such as large computer monitors or television screens

Try to avoid areas with environmental noise like loud crowds, or running water.

Be sure youdon'thave headphones plugged in to your smart phone

If you wear hearing aids, be sure to turn them off

Try cleaning the metal electrodes with an alcohol wipe

Try moistening where the sensors contact your skin with a bit of water to improve conductivity with the electrodes.

When recording from the hands, relax the arms and hands to reduce muscle noise. You may even rest forearms and hands on a flat surface, place the KardiaMobile EKG on the flat surface with the metal electrodes up, and let your fingers rest on the electrodes.

Make sure that both you and the mobile device remain still during ECG recordings. Movement during recordings will cause noise in the tracing

  • AliveCor has developed multipleFDA-cleared detectors or algorithms. These detectors are only appropriate for use on Lead I.

TheNormaldetector will notify you when no abnormalities are detected by displaying the message Normal. No abnormalities were detected in your EKG. This means that your heart rate was between 50-100 beats per minute, there were no or very few abnormal beats, and the shape, timing and duration of each beat is considered normal. Remember that there is a wide range of normal variability among different individuals, so the Normal detector has been designed to be conservative. Also, if you have been diagnosed by a physician with a condition that affects the shape of your EKG, are experiencing an arrhythmia or took a poor quality recording, it is unlikely that you will be notified that your EKG is normal.

TheNoisedetector will notify you when the recording is "Unreadable" because the signal contains a clinically relevant amount of noise which is determined to not be an EKG. This can be caused by physical movement, dry skin, or other sources. To try to solve "Unreadable" results, try to relax and hold still, rest your arms or move to a quiet location. Onceyou'vemade these changes you can go ahead and take another recording. Other best practices to get a high quality recording include:

Keep your Kardia electrodes clean using an alcohol-based sanitizer.

Apply a water-based lotion to your hands prior to taking an EKG recording if your hands are very dry.

Ensure your smartphone or tablet is not plugged in or charging during recording.

TheAFdetector will notify you to the presence of atrial fibrillation with 97% sensitivity and 98% specificity. If AF is detected, you will see the message Possible AF Detected. This result is not a diagnosis, only a possible finding. We recommend sending it AliveCors EKG analysis service for review, or sharing it with your doctor or medical professional.

Note that the EKG recording must be 30 seconds in length for the detectors to function.

  • When trial fibrillation was not detected and your EKG does not fall under the algorithmic classifications of 'Normal', 'Bradycardia', or 'Tachycardia' an 'Unclassified' result is given.

An 'Unclassified' finding may be caused by other arrhythmias, unusually fast or slow heart rates, poor quality recording, or for just falling outside the boundaries of our algorithmic requirements to be called one of our other results.

You always have the option to share your EKG with your physician or medical professional, or submit it for a Clinician Review directly from the Kardia app to be reviewed by a team of human clinicians.

  • Normal indicates normal sinus rhythm, the normal functioning of the heart's electrical system. Specifically, for Kardia(tm), Instant Analysis Normal indicates a regular sinus rhythm with a heart rate of 50 to 100 beats per minute.

The heart pumps blood to the lungs and to all the body's tissues by a sequence of highly organized contractions between two upper chambers (atria) and two lower chambers (ventricles). For the heart to function properly, the four chambers must beat in sync. Normal indicates that the electrical signals that control the heart are occurring normally, beginning at the top of the heart (from a region called the "sinus" node) and then traveling downwards to the ventricles. The term "arrhythmia" refers to any change from the normal sequence of electrical impulses.Heart disease and heart attack can occur in the presence of normal sinus rhythm. Contact a physician or emergency services if you have questions or are concerned about any symptoms.

  • The term Atrial Fibrillation is based on the words, Atrial meaning the upper part of heart, andFibrillation which means quivering.

Atrial fibrillation is a quivering or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). Specifically, for Kardia(tm), Instant Analysis Atrial Fibrillation indicates an irregular rhythm at any heart rate. Atrial fibrillation can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications. Normally, your heart contracts and relaxes to a regular beat. In atrial fibrillation, the upper chambers of the heart (atria) beat irregularly and the blood does not effectively move in the heart, which may result in clot formation. If a clot breaks off, enters the bloodstream and lodges in an artery leading to the brain, a stroke results. About 15-20 percent of people who have strokes experience atrial fibrillation. The clot risk is why patients with this condition are often put on blood thinners. Untreated atrial fibrillation is associated with a 5-fold increased risk for stroke. Risk factors for atrial fibrillation include: advanced age, high blood pressure, heart disease, alcohol use, family history, sleep apnea, thyroid problem, and diabetes. Sometimes people with atrial fibrillation have no symptoms at all. Others may experience fatigue, rapid heartbeat, fluttering or thumping in chest, dizziness, shortness of breath, anxiety, weakness, fainting, confusion, sweating, or chest pain or pressure.*The treatment for atrial fibrillation depends on your risk of stroke and your symptoms. Many patients will need to take a blood thinner (antithrombotic medication) that treats and prevents blood clots that can lead to a stroke. Additional medications may be prescribed to slow the heart rate, or restore the heart rhythm to normal. Patients with atrial fibrillation are advised to engage in regular physical activity, eat a heart-healthy diet, manage high blood pressure, avoid excessive amounts of alcohol and caffeine, not smoke, control cholesterol, and maintain a healthy weight. All of these goals aid in the prevention of overall heart disease, too. Finally, there are invasive procedures that may be performed (electrical cardioversion, catheter or surgical ablation) to restore the heart rhythm to normal. Filling out this sheet from the American Heart Association, Partnering in Your Treatment, can help you discuss your goals and options with your healthcare provider. https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/atrial-fibrillation/treatment-and-prevention-of-atrial-fibrillation/treatment-options-of-atrial-fibrillation-afib-or-af *Chest pain or pressure is a medical emergency. • How do I change or replace the KardiaMobile battery?

This screen is shown when Kardia is ready to record an EKG and is the starting point for all KardiaMobile recording. It indicates that the Kardia app is ready and waiting for your KardiaMobile to begin recording.

To get started, have your KardiaMobile device with you. Place your phone and KardiaMobile on a table in front of you, no more than 6 inches apart. Place a finger from your right hand on the right electrode, and a finger from your left hand on the left electrode.

At this point the Kardia application will say it is initializing and a spinner as it connects, then you're recording will begin.

If you are having any trouble completing your recording or feel like your recording is not as good as it could be, try reading this article: How do I get a clean EKG signal with KardiaMobile?

  • Tachycardia is based on the words Tachy which means fast, andCardia meaning heart.Tachycardia is a heart rate that's more than 100 beats per minute. Specifically, for Kardia(tm), Instant Analysis Tachycardia indicates a mild form of tachycardia not due to atrial fibrillation, between 100 to 140 beats per minute. The normal range for heart rate depends on your age and physical condition. The most common form of tachycardia is sinus tachycardia, which is a normal increase in heart rate. A rapid heart beat may be your body's response to common conditions such as anxiety, fright, dehydration, emotional distress, exercise, fever, drugs, some medication, thyroid problem, or anemia. Other causes of tachycardia may be due to heart disease or other conditions that affect the heart's electrical system. When the heart beats fast, you may have no symptoms or you may experience dizziness, fainting, fluttering in chest, chest pain or pressure*, confusion, or shortness of breath. The treatment for tachycardia depends on what is causing the fast rate, as well as your symptoms. For sinus tachycardia, the cause of sinus tachycardia is treated, rather than just treating the condition. Cutting down on coffee, alcohol, and tobacco is advised. Severe tachycardia may be treated with medication, cardioversion, radiofrequency ablation or surgery. *Chest pain or pressure is a medical emergency. Contact a physician or 911 if you have questions or are concerned about any symptoms.

If someone intends to use the same KardiaMobile regularly to take EKGs, we recommend each user having their own Kardia account and application downloaded on their smart phone.
