View ArticleAs a rule of thumb, tracking apps typically use 10-15% of your phone's battery per hour. There are a few things that you can do to help extend your phone's battery life while recording out on the trail:
Turn down your screen's brightness - in addition to turning down your screen's brightness, try to minimize the number of times you look at the screen while recording.
Lock your phone - If you don't need to view your recording screen try locking your phone while recordings.
Close apps you aren't using - certain apps will continue to drain your phone's battery even when they are in the background.
Turn on airplane mode - when your phone doesn't have service, it constantly searches to try to establish a connection which kills your battery. In most cases, the GPS capability is still enabled and recording will work just fine. However, some Motorola devices or iOS 8.3 and older disable the GPS in airplane mode so be sure and test this out beforehand.
If you can't or don't want to use airplane mode, you can extend your battery by turning off your Wifi and/or bluetooth, push notifications, and email sync.
Carry a portable charger - Having a portable charger on hand is the best way to ensure you won't run out of battery while out on the trail!
Additionally, you can always check your battery levels by going to settings>battery and your phone will give you a breakdown of how much battery each app is consuming.
View ArticleWhen you use AllTrails to record your adventures, you'll have data automatically tied to your recording including total distance, total elevation gain, total moving time, and estimated calories burned.
We also include your pace by default. Pace is the average of how long it takes you to go a given distance. If you have an average pace of 19:55, that means it took you on average 19 minutes and 55 seconds to travel one mile (or km, depending on your settings).
You have the ability to toggle this setting to measure speed instead. Speed is how far you move in a given time. So if you see an average speed of 3.0 mph, that means that in a given hour you'll travel 3 miles.
You can change your pace or speed settings by following these steps:
Via desktop or laptop computer:
Log in to your account on https://www.alltrails.com
Hover over your name in the top-right corner and select 'Settings' from the drop-down
Find the 'Recording Preference' section
The default setting is Pace. If youd like to switch to Speed simply click the button next to it or vice versa.
At the bottom of the page, click 'Save'
Via iPhone or Android app:
Open the AllTrails app
Tap on 'Profile' on the bottom navigation bar
Tap on 'Settings'
Tap on 'Recording Preference'
Select 'Pace' or 'Speed'
View ArticleAllTrails is driven by community generated content.Your Reputation Score helps members see who is the most active within the AllTrails community.
Your Reputation Score goes up when you contribute content such as reviews, photos, and recordings. You can also increase your score by suggesting new trailsor editing existing trails. If your suggested edits get approved by our reviewers, you get even more points.
The exact amount of points provided for each action is a trusted secret but what we can tell you is that different actions are weighted differently. Here is a quick summary on how your contributions help make the AllTrails community even better:
Trails - adding new trails or editing trails to improve them helps other members discover new places
Recordings - recording a trail or uploading a GPS file of a trail recording helps inspire other community members
Photos - sharing photos helps everyone learn more about what they'll see on the trail
Reviews - writing a review helps members learn more about a trail
Facebook - linking your account with Facebook helps verify your identity
You also can earn points by contributing to trails with little or no content. Find trails that need to be improved and get rewarded for being one of the first people to write a review, submit photos, or record it using the AllTrails app.
We are continuously tweaking our Reputation Score algorithms to ensure that our community members are rewarded for providing relevant, helpful content. As of Sept. 2016 we've recalculated everyone's score using our new point system - the most important changes are listed below:
Capped the maximum number of points that you can earn for each content submission category per trail
Private photos and recordings will no longer count towards your Reputation Score
Photos not tied to a trail or a recording will no longer count towards your score
Reputation score is not a contest but it helps bring a sense of community. The more active you are with AllTrails, the more valuable your reputation score.

Sometimes your recording will overlap with more than one trail in our system, and in those instances youll earn multiple Verified Completed badges from one outing! If you want to follow along while recording to make sure you earn a badge for a specific trail, you can load that trail into Recorder (for example, by pressing the Record button on any trail page). Youll see a progress bar along the top of the map area, and as you record, the underlying trail and the progress bar will turn purple when your recording overlaps the trail. When you have verified 75% of the trail, youll get a notification that you earned the Verified Completed badge for that trail.Trails that have been added to your Completed List but not verified will have a green Completed badge. You can earn a Verified Completed badge by recording an activity using the AllTrails app or through a sync of your Garmin account on that trail. View ArticleLifeline is an AllTrails Pro feature that keeps your friends and loved ones informed while you are out on the trail. With Lifeline, you can select up to 5 safety contacts who will be able to track:
Your planned start and finish time + date
Your planned starting and ending location
Your total tracked distance and elevation gain
Your real-time location on a map plotted against your planned route
You can quickly send pre-formatted status updates to your safety contacts with just a tap while you are out on the trail. Most importantly, if you are overdue for your scheduled finish time, Lifeline will automatically send an alert to your safety contacts along with your last known coordinates.
Anyone with an email address or cell phone number can be a safety contact. Safety contacts do not need to download the AllTrails app or have an AllTrails account to view your real-time location.
How does Lifeline work
Follow these steps to use Lifeline as an AllTrails Pro user:
Open the AllTrails app
Tap on 'Record' on the bottom navigation bar
On the Record screen, tap the 'Lifeline' icon on the bottom right of your screen
Toggle the bar to turn-on 'Lifeline'
Load a trail map, select your activity and set your planned start and finish time and date
Add safety contacts by manually entering them in or choosing to 'Add from Contacts' (this will prompt a request for AllTrails to access your contacts)
Craft your welcome message to your contacts and tap 'Send' in the top right corner when you're finished
Begin your recording by tapping the red 'Record' button of the screen
When you are within reach of cell signal, your safety contacts will receive a text message and/or email with a unique URL. They can use this link to view your status and real-time location via their web browser. They will also receive any notifications or updates that you send via Lifeline while you are out on the trail.
Once you clear or save your recording, your safety contacts will be messaged and will no longer be able to see your real-time location. Location tracking only works whenyou'veturned on Lifeline and are actively recording using the AllTrails app.
Lifeline FAQs
Does Lifeline require a data connection to set up?
You'll need a data signal when setting up your Lifeline to send out your activity details and unique tracking URL to your safety contacts. You will also need a data signal to edit an active Lifeline.Messages sent when out of data signal will be queued up to send when you return to signal.
What happens when I don't have a data connection while out on the trail?
Real-time tracking is dependent on a data connection. If you encounter limited GPS or data connectivity while out on the trail, your safety contacts will see delayed tracking information until you are back in range of a signal. AllTrails does not guarantee coordinate accuracy.
Who can see my location with Lifeline?
Anyone with your unique tracking URL can see your real-time location tracking (data signal permitting) but only while you are actively recording with the AllTrails app, with Lifeline turned on, and within cell signal. As soon as you clear or save your recording, real-time location tracking will stop.
Why do I have to load a map into Recorder to use Lifeline?
Lifeline is built to keep your friends and family informed, and in the event that your adventure takes you to a place where there isn't a data signal (and thereby no real-time location tracking), the pre-loaded map allows your safety contacts to know your planned start/end location as well as the route you are intending to follow. If something happens to you while you are out on the trail, your safety contacts will be notified if you don't check in by your planned end time. They can pass this vital information to the local authorities to use in any sort of search and rescue process.

View ArticleWe're excited to announce that AllTrails has acquired GPSies. This opportunity makes our trail information available to an ever wider audience and benefits everyone looking for new places to explore. Together we are excited to expand our global reach and we hope you are too.
We realize you may have some questions about your GPSies account before coming on board. Please review this FAQ and if you have additional questions you can always email [email protected].
Can I still access GPSies and all of my account information?
Yes! You can still use GPSies.com and access your GPSies account information by logging in here. The GPSies Android and iOS apps will also continue to be available for the time being.
How do I import my data to AllTrails?
We've made it so that if you choose to, all of your GPSies account information can be seamlessly ported over to AllTrails.
If you do not yet have an AllTrails account simply log in to AllTrails using the email address and the password you use for your GPSies account. This will create a new account on AllTrails and automatically populate it with your GPSies account information.
If youdon'tremember your GPSies password, you can use the AllTrails 'Forgot Password' link here: https://www.alltrails.com/users/password/new
If you have both a GPSies account and an AllTrails account with the SAME email address, log out of the AllTrails app or AllTrails website and log back in using your same email address and your AllTrails password. If youdon'tremember your AllTrails password, you can use the AllTrails 'Forgot Password' link above.
If you have both a GPSies account and an AllTrails account with DIFFERENT email addresses, we can easily merge the two accounts. First you must log out of your existing AllTrails account in the AllTrails app or AllTrails website and log back in to AllTrails with your GPSies account information to activate that account. Then email [email protected] and let us know that you would like your accounts merged and which email address you would like to retain for login.
When you log in to AllTrails it will kick off the import, however the import process can take some time depending on the amount of content you have in your GPSies account. If you still do not see your content after 24 hours please reach out to [email protected].
Please note: If you have an existing AllTrails account and are logged in with that account on the website or in the iOS or Android apps, please log out and log in again to start the import of you GPSies data.
By logging into your AllTrails account you are accepting our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
What data will be imported into AllTrails and how do I see it?
The first time you log in to AllTrails, the following GPSies account information will automatically be imported into your AllTrails account:
Your user account informationincluding your name, email address, and location settings.
Your GPSies My Trackswill go directly into your AllTrails 'Recordings' under History>>Recordings or in your AllTrails 'Maps' under Plan>>Maps. Any tracks created on the GPSies website or those that do not have time data associated with them can be found under your AllTrails 'Maps'. All other tracks can be found under your AllTrails 'Recordings.' All photos associated with these tracks will be imported accordingly.
Your GPSies 'My Tracks' that have time data will be imported as public AllTrails recordings unless you have marked your tracks as private on your GPSies account. If they were set to private they will also be private on AllTrails and will only be visible to you. You can always change these recordings to be public if you would like to share them with other AllTrails users, and your friends or family.
If you wish to make your recordings private, you can do so by following these the steps here.
You can access your recordings by following the steps here.
How do I set my profile to private?
By default your profile will be public and visible to the AllTrails community. You can change your profile to be private by following the steps in this article.
What if I do not want to import my content?
If you would like to delete your GPSies account and all of your associated data please email us at [email protected].
How do I download my tracks on AllTrails?
As an AllTrails user you can download a route from a trail page, as well as files for your Recordings and Maps, and other user's Recordings and Maps. You can learn more about exporting files from AllTrails here.
Why do my tracks have different activities on AllTrails?
AllTrails only allows for one activity type per track. Not all of our activities are the exact same as GPSies. We have mapped the activities from GPSies to the activities available on AllTrails for each track that was imported as an AllTrails 'Recording'. You can see the mapping of activity types below:

View ArticleOur community of outdoor enthusiasts each have slightly different needs in a map. We have tried to meet these needs by offering a choice of map layers across our website and apps.In both using these maps ourselves and in hearing feedback from our members, we realized that while each has its strengths, no one map option was ideally suited for the outdoors. We saw the need to create an ideal trail map for the digital age through our AllTrails map layer.
One of our main tasks was to determine what kinds of information should be included on the map, at what zoom levels these details should appear, and what are the best data sources. The map data itself came from combining a number of trusted sources including OpenStreepMap, USGS, Mapbox, and our own data. The starting point in the visual design was the classic USGS-style topographic map. From there, we wanted to make sure trails were given particular prominence, and to include mileage labels on each trail segment as are often seen on paper trail guide maps. We also wanted to show boundaries for parks and wilderness areas as well as useful points of interest.
LEGEND:
Trails on the 'AllTrails' map layer are represented as black single dashed lines
Blue dashed lines mean that bikes are permitted for trails
Red squares represent trail intersection markers with the trail distance shown for each major segment

On the lower portion of the left column, the title will appear in the white bar with a settings wheel next to it
Below the bar, right click on the arrow (which will have a number next to it) and select 'Create Track from Route'. A new layer will be created marked with footprints, rather than an arrow.
Right click on the arrow again and select 'Delete' to remove the layer from your view

View ArticleAs an AllTrails member, you can create your own custom maps using either a desktop or laptop computer with our free map creation tool.
We completely rebuilt the routing engine that powers this tool to make it easier than ever to choose the right path based on your activity, helping you spend less time planning and more time out on the trail.
To create a new map:
Go to https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/new or hover over 'Plan' in the top header and click on 'Create Map'
Pan and zoom to the specific map area you want or use the Find location button to search for a city, park, or lat/long in decimal degrees format (ex: 12.345, -123.456).
To give your map a name, click on the 'edit' button next to "New Map"
You can create a route by clicking 'draw route' or selecting 'upload gpx'
Routing vs. drawing mode:
Our new and improved map creation tool includes two options that you will see in the upper right corner of the screen: routing and drawing.
Routingmodeis the simplest way to create a route from Point A to Point B. Select your activity in the drop-down in the upper right corner of the screen, click on a starting point, click on where you want to go, and we willintelligently and automatically route you on the best path for your activity.
The following activities are available for routing:
Hiking - when this is selected, the routing preference will be hiking trails and walking paths that support pedestrian access; you should not be routed anywhere where pedestrians are not allowed
Mountain biking - when this is selected, the routing preference will be multi-surface trails that support bicycle access; you should not be routed on any trails, walking paths, or roads where bikes are not allowed
Bike touring - when this is selected, the routing preference will be on trails, roads, and paths that support bicycle access with a preference for good surfaces and less hilly routes;you should not be routed on any trails, walking paths, or roads where bikes are not allowed
Road biking - when this is selected, the routing preference will be on paved roads and paths that support bicycle access;you should not be routed on any trails, walking paths, or roads where bikes are not allowed
Off-road driving - when this is selected, the routing preference will be on multi-surface roads and trails that support motorized "adventure" riding; you should not be routed on any trails or walking paths where motorized vehicles are not allowed
Scenic driving - when this is selected, the routing preference will be on paved roads
Note:When routing for mountain biking, bike touring, road biking, off-road driving, or scenic driving, if there is a one-way street, trail, or path, routing will always follow the direction of the pathway.
If you're trying to route on a specific segment and you're being re-rerouted, you can always enter 'Drawing Mode' to manually draw along that segment. The segment or road may not be recognized by the underlying OSM data that powers the routing engine, but you can always draw along the segment manually and then return to Routing Mode to finish the route.
Drawing Mode allows you to freely draw your route. Segments and roads will not automatically be selected or snapped-to when in this mode.Use your mouse cursor and left-click to draw the trail route.
Tip: When in 'drawing' mode, you can hold 'Shift' on your keyboard to enable free-draw. In this state the trail line will be drawn wherever you move your curser. To undo free-draw, let go of the 'Shift' key and left-click on your mouse to create a straight line to the next point.
Additional tips for routing and drawing:
To create an out-and-back trail click on the blue 'Out & Back'button beneath the color options to create a route that returns the way you came
To return to the start of the trail using Routing Mode or Drawing Mode, click 'Return'
To reverse the locations of the green start and black end markers, click 'Reverse'
To change the color of a route, select a color from the color block options
To switch between routing and drawing modes, you can use the control key on your keyboard
If you make a mistake simply click the Undo button in the lower left corner of the screen
You can click the Redo button to reapply your last action if you change your mind
Please note that you can only select one activity at a time for routing. You can switch your activity (for instance from mountain biking to hiking) but it will not update or re-route the existing drawn route. In order to start routing in your new activity you will need to click directly on the map after you've updated your activity.
Keyboard shortcuts
When Tapped:
cmd-z / ctrl-z = undo
cmd-y / ctrl-y / cmd-shift-z / ctrl-shift-z = redo
ctrl = toggles between routing and drawing modes
delete / backspace = deletes a selected route node
While Held:
shift = "free-draws" when clicking and dragging mouse in drawing mode, allows you to draw on top of lines and also allows you to draw on top of markers (without dragging them)
option = keeps start/end marker separated, and also when dragging a start/end marker drags along the connecting line segment
Edit and save:
When finished, click 'Save.'You can create multiple routes on the same map using the various color options. Just save your first route and then click 'Draw Route'again to add another.
To edit a saved route, click the pencil icon to the right of the route color. To delete a route, click on the X.
To edit points in your route you can simply drag them to another area or hit the 'delete' button to remove a point.
Waypoints
Create a title and description for your waypoints in the edit column. Position your waypoint along the route by clicking on the waypoint and dragging its corresponding purple dot to the new desired location. To always show the title of the waypoint on the map view, click the 'Show Title'box in the edit column. You can find additional information on adding waypoints here.
Description
You have the option to provide a brief description of your map to easily remember what the route covers and why you created it. This may be useful to people who you share the map with.
Photos
Once you have saved a route, upload photos directly from your computer by hitting 'Upload Photos' or drag photos into the box provided.
Elevation Profile
Drag your mouse along the elevation profile graph at the bottom of the map screen for each of your routes to see the corresponding point on the map.
Once saved, your custom maps will be listed under 'Plan' >> 'Maps' in the AllTrails header. These maps automatically sync with your AllTrails iPhone or Android app, and you can access your maps in the app under 'Plan' >> 'Maps'.
Sharing
You can share your custom map via the AllTrails iPhone and Android apps or simply by copying the URL of the map at the top of your browser and pasting it wherever youd like to share it. For more information on sharing maps, click here.

This solid green arrow is called 'follow' mode and displays north as 'up', and your blue GPSdot stays in the center of the screen as you move.
The solid green arrow pointing upis called 'follow with heading' mode. The blue GPS dot still stays in the center, but the direction you are facing is 'up', so as you turn the map turns.
The hollow green arrow is called 'none' mode. You can think of this as custom location tracking. You set the map where you want it and at the exact zoom level you want. The blue GPS dot may or may not be on the screen, and if it is on the screen, it doesn't automatically re-center. You could easily "walk off" the map.
The arrow with a box around it is called 'map bounds' mode, which causes the map to zoom out to show all of the content of the current map. If you loaded in a trail map and zoomed in to look at a certain feature, going into this mode will cause the map too zoom back out to display the entire route and all of its features (waypoints, photos, etc).
NOTE: For both 'follow' mode and 'follow with heading' mode, if you zoom in on the map, the app will naturally zoom you back out as it moves the map around to keep you in the center. If you want to retain your zoom level we suggest using 'none' mode. Additionally, if you are in 'follow' or 'follow with heading' mode and you pan the map (as opposed to zooming), the map will automatically switch into 'none' mode.

When adding new trails, we are specifically looking for trails thatstart and end at a parking area, are on public property, and contain a drawn route. Please note that any suggested trail additions must first be evaluated by our moderators. This process may take a while depending on our ability to verify the information.
