Dr. Akshay K. Vaishnaw, M.D., Ph.D. has been Executive Vice President of Research and Development at Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. since December 2014. Dr. Vaishnaw served as Chief Medical Officer of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. since June 13, 2011 until December 2016. He served as Executive Vice President of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from June 2012 to December 2014. He served as Senior Vice President of Clinical Research at Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from December 2008 to June 13, 2011 and served as its Senior Vice President from June 13, 2011 to June 27, 2012. Previously, Dr. Vaishnaw served as a Vice President of Clinical Research of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc. from February 7, 2006 to January 27, 2009. At Alnylam, he was responsible for leading and managing Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s clinical organization. Dr. Vaishnaw joined Alnylam in February 2006 from Biogen Idec, where he served as Senior Director for Translational Medicine. From December 1998 to 2005, he held various positions at Biogen Inc. and was involved in many aspects of clinical research and business development and led the effort for the approval of alefacept (Amevive(TM)) for psoriasis. Dr. Vaishnaw has extensive clinical experience in the industry as well as in the academic and hospital settings. Dr. Vaishnaw's other responsibilities at Biogen Idec included initiating a cross-organizational effort in Translational Medicine across all phases of development and multiple therapeutic areas, participating on steering committees for external collaborations and in M&A activity. He has been Director of Editas Medicine, Inc. since July 29, 2016 and Visterra, Inc. since October 31, 2014. He has been a Member of Scientific Advisory Board at Scholar Rock, Inc. since September 2014. In addition, Dr. Vaishnaw has published papers in leading scientific journals and authored a number of textbook chapters relating to autoimmune disease. He is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, UK and received an Executive M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Dr. Vaishnaw received his M.D. from the University of Wales College of Medicine, UK, with Distinctions in Pathology and Medicine and his Ph.D. from the University of London, UK, in Molecular Immunology.
