Natural gas is a vital part of our clean energy future. From extraction through distribution, 91 percent of natural gas is delivered to customers as usable energy, compared to electricity where generation and transmission is only 36 percent efficient. Because natural gas is efficient, it partners with renewable energy to provide dependable and clean energy for today and generations to come.
Local gas distribution systems are estimated to account for only 0.1 percent natural gas emissions. Since 1990, leaks from mains are down 25 percent and from service lines down 16 percent; emissions from gas distribution are down 74 percent.
Atmos Energy is committed to practices that reduce methane emissions from our transmission and distribution systems, including infrastructure renewal programs to replace aging steel, vintage plastics and cast iron distribution pipelines. This commitment starts with our board-level corporate responsibility and sustainability committee and is part of how we work to improve our operations every day to achieve our vision of being the safest provider of natural gas services.
Community service is a fundamental element of our culture. Because our employees live, work and play in the communities we serve, they take great pride in being good neighbors.
Atmos Energy and our employees contribute significant time and financial support to the communities in which we live and work. Over the last five years we have donated nearly $24 million to communities to support education, health and community welfare. On average, employees spend more than 35,000 hours each year donating their time and skills to the cities and towns they live in.
