The Avvo Rating explained

The Avvo Rating is our effort to evaluate a lawyer’s background based on the information available in an attorney’s Avvo profile. We create the rating using a model that considers information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Any information that affects the Avvo Rating is visible in an attorney’s profile. Avvo does not provide a numerical rating for profiles that have not been claimed by that attorney.

Attorneys always have the opportunity to add information to their profiles, and those attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

Keep in mind that these ratings speak to a lawyer’s background, but do not evaluate their knowledge of the law, past performance on individual cases, personality, or communication skills. These are elements that the Avvo Rating cannot evaluate, but can be better described in the client reviews and peer endorsements found on an attorney’s profile.

Why the Avvo Rating can help you find the right attorney:

How the Avvo Rating is calculated.The rating is calculated using a mathematical model, and all lawyers are evaluated on the same set of standards.

The Avvo Rating cannot be bought.At Avvo, all lawyers are treated equally. We don’t play favorites, and attorneys can’t pay us to improve their ratings.

It was developed by legal professionals and people looking for legal services.The model used to calculate the rating was developed with input from hundreds of attorneys, thousands of consumers, and many other legal professionals who deeply understand the work attorneys do. We created the Avvo Rating to reflect the type of information people have identified as important when looking to hire an attorney.

It’s as simple as counting to 10.Ratings fall on a scale of 1 (Extreme Caution) to 10 (Superb), helping you quickly assess a lawyer’s background based on our rating.

The Avvo Rating is based only on the information we have collected and that the attorney has provided, so we don’t recommend the Avvo Rating as the only piece of information you use to evaluate whether an attorney is right for you. The rating is a tool that provides a snapshot assessment of a lawyer’s background and should be considered alongside other information such as client reviews and peer endorsements.

Frequently Asked Consumer Questions about the Avvo Rating

How does Avvo calculate the Avvo Rating?

We calculate the rating based on public data we may have collected on each attorney and the information they have provided in their profile. The public data we collect comes from a variety of sources, including public records (state bar associations, regulatory agencies, and court records) and other published sources on the internet. This information, however, is not exhaustive, and might not include additional relevant information that could increase an attorney’s rating. Attorneys know about their own experience and have the option to add this information to their profiles by either claiming their profile and adding information, or contacting Avvo Customer Care to provide additional information and those details will often increase an attorney’s rating.

Avvo’s mathematical module considers and weights the information collected and provided to calculate a numerical rating, ranging from 1 to 10. Within the model, we take into account factors that consumers and legal professionals believe are relevant to an attorney’s qualifications, including experience, professional achievements, and disciplinary sanctions.

What does “Attention” or “Not Active on Avvo” mean?

Avvo publishes a numerical rating for all claimed profiles. For lawyers who have not claimed their profile and have no public record of bar association discipline, we do not display a rating and rather indicate, “This attorney is not active on Avvo.” For lawyers with a disciplinary action in their background based on publicly available data such that their numerical rating (which is not displayed on the site) has dropped lower than “5,” we display “Attention.” We are only able to collect publicly-available information about an attorney from the state bar or other organizations that license legal professionals. When an attorney doesn’t claim their profile, we tend to have more limited information and, therefore display an Avvo Rating of either “Attention” or indicate that they are not active on Avvo. “Attention” is given if there is information in public records that, in our opinion, you should be aware of, such as disciplinary action against a lawyer. You should be aware that we rely on public data that may not be comprehensive, or frequently updated. Always research the lawyer further to get a better understanding of their disciplinary status, background, and experience.

Does Avvo publish the details of how the rating is calculated?

The data that we take into account is all displayed on an attorney’s profile. However, we do not disclose the weight we give to this information so that no one can game the system, boosting their rating through unfair advantage. Much as Google doesn’t share its search engine secrets, we don’t share the inner-workings of the Avvo Rating so we can maintain the neutrality and integrity of the rating.

What if a lawyer doesn’t have a rating at all?

Avvo does not provide a numerical rating for profiles that have not been claimed by that attorney. Avvo does not provide any rating in instances where it would not be useful, such as if the attorney is deceased or serving as a public official.

An attorney may request we remove the rating from their profile, and we honor those requests for attorneys who have not been disciplined and who are not looking for clients. These profiles will read “Avvo Rating Not Displayed”, and will not appear on practice area search listings in Avvo’s directory.

Do lawyers have to pay or sign-up to have an Avvo Rating?

Absolutely not. Avvo creates a profile for every licensed attorney we are able to locate, and calculates a rating for lawyers who claim their profile. Profiles are free to attorneys, and the Avvo Rating cannot be influenced by advertising or other forms of payment.

Can lawyers lie to increase their Rating?

Attorneys can lose their licenses for falsifying data, and we don’t believe they will take that risk on their Avvo profile. We also rely on our community of users to ensure data on Avvo is as accurate as possible. If you see information on an attorney profile that you know to be incorrect, please contact us and we will investigate the issue. If an attorney is found to have intentionally posted false information, it will impact their level of professional conduct and negatively impact their Avvo Rating.

Can I remove the Avvo Rating from my profile?

Attorneys who have not been disciplined and who are not seeking legal clients may request that their numerical Avvo Rating not be displayed on their profile. If your request is approved, you will not be included in practice area search results, though licensing details and client reviews will remain visible on your individual profile.

Avvo’s goal is to make it easier for everyone to navigate the often-opaque legal industry. We create profiles and collect publicly available data for over 97\% of US attorneys. Claiming your profile on Avvo allows you to add more information about you and your practice, allowing us to provide a more accurate Avvo Rating.

We do not “adjust” ratings by request, nor do we remove attorney profiles.

Can I add or correct information without claiming my profile?

Attorneys who have not claimed their profile may contact Avvo’s support team to request the addition or correction of data to their profile. Our support team is available via email, phone, or online chat. Contact our support team here with your inquiry, email us at [email protected].

Peer endorsements do affect your Avvo Rating, though reviews do not. This is because peer endorsements--one lawyer endorsing another’s skills and experience--are a way to assess industry recognition, which is a factor in how we calculate an attorney’s Avvo Rating. Reviews do play a very important role for people looking to hire an attorney, but we have chosen to not include that information when calculating the Avvo Rating.

How can I change my Avvo Rating?

If you are displayed as “Attention” or not active on Avvo, you still can receive a numerical rating by claiming your profile. When you claim your profile on Avvo, the automatically calculated numerical rating will display on your profile and in search results. But, as described above, the Avvo Rating can be removed from your profile display upon your request.

If you already have a numerical Avvo Rating, your score may change as you update and provide more information in your profile, especially work experience, practice areas you work in, and professional achievements. However, please make sure that the information you provide is accurate; inaccurate data could negatively impact your Avvo Rating. If you believe a public record contains inaccurate information about you that is affecting your Avvo Rating, you can contact the appropriate organization and ask to have the record changed. When we collect that data again, your rating may change to reflect the new information we are able to assess.

We will not change numerical ratings upon request. Because the Avvo Rating is based on a mathematical model that is applied in the same way to every attorney, we are unable to change individual ratings. When you update your profile with more information, your rating may change: the more we know about you, the better we can determine your numerical Avvo Rating.

Additionally, it is the responsibility of attorneys to ensure that any information or advertisements they place on Avvo, and any communication they may have with prospective clients through the Avvo site, comply with the rules of professional conduct regulating the form, manner, and content of communications with clients, advertising, or other matter.

Does the Avvo Rating change over time?

Yes, an attorney’s Avvo Rating may change over time, and there are a few ways this could happen. First, as we collect more information about a lawyer, their Avvo Rating gets recalculated and the score may adjust based on the new information provided. Second, to the extent that we collect or receive data that cannot be immediately verified, we mark this data as “unknown” and update the score once we have reviewed it. Third, some information is given less weight as time passes. For example, the weighting the mathematical model gives to certain disciplinary actions and industry recognition items decreases as time passes, reflecting our opinion that, in these areas, the most recent information matters the most. Finally, we may periodically adjust the mathematical model used to calculate the Avvo Rating, which could result in a change to a lawyer’s numerical rating.

How do the different types of points affect the Leaderboard?

All the points you receive on Avvo contribute to your overall Contributor score, and that score determines your rank on the Leaderboard.

What does the “Staff Pick” designation mean?

Not all guides are created equal. When we come across a guide that we feel is especially helpful to people (i.e., well written, relevant, and original), we designate that guide as a Staff Pick, which will add 40 points to your Contributor level score.

All decisions as to how and whether points are awarded are determined by Avvo in its sole discretion. Avvo reserves the right to remove or adjust points awarded to anyone and to modify or discontinue the point system at any time, with or without notice.

How does billing & payment work on Avvo?

Each claimed profile will have unique sign-in credentialsthe attorney’s email address and a password. We do not have the ability to create one master login for multiple profiles. You can have one person update and manage all the profiles, or ask individual attorneys to fill in their own information.

Note:After you have added a badge to your website, it can take several days for the profile completeness to update on your dashboardit depends on the amount of traffic you get to your site.

The Avvo Rating is calculated using the information in your profile. We collect some amount of publically available information such as bar licensing and disciplinary actions. But there is information that we rely on attorneys to provide in order to increase their individual rating. Claiming your profile and adding current, relevant information can translate into points toward your rating.

Be sure to include:

Work experience. What legal-related work have you done since you graduated from law school? The Avvo Rating factors in the type of work experience as well as the number of years you have practiced. This can include leadership positions that you have held with legal associations (e.g., your state bar).

Awards. Awards from recognized groups like Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers in America, and Martindale-Hubble, will positively impact your Avvo Rating. This impact decreases over time, so be sure to list any new awards you receive.

Legal associations. We are interested in your professional involvements in the legal community. This shows that you take your law practice seriously and that you are committed to improving yourself as an attorney. The boost to your rating will be even bigger if your peers have elevated you to an office or position within that group.

Publications. If you have not published anything, now is the time to do so. You probably already belong to at least one legal organization that puts out a newsletter, and odds are that the organization needs content to go in their newsletter. Submit an article in your area of knowledge; once it is published, you have a publication credit for your Avvo profile. If you have already published law-related articles, then you are ahead of the game--you just need to list them.

Speaking engagements. This can include events where you have given a talk at the annual bar association dinner, or if you have conducted any continuing legal education (CLE) programs. If you haven’t yet taught a CLE program, think about what you have to offer. In addition to expanding your knowledge of the subject you teach, it's a great way to increase your Avvo Rating.

Peer endorsements. Endorsements from fellow attorneys on your Avvo profile can increase your rating. Please note that there is a limit to how many endorsement points you get. Also, note that client reviews do not have any effect on your Avvo Rating.

Additional tips

Fill out your Avvo profile to maximize your score. A surprising number of lawyers claim their Avvo profile and then do nothing to make sure it accurately reflects their credentials and experience. Take a second to make sure that the information we have and that you’ve provided is correct in your license and education sections. It is important to provide as much relevant information as you can. Remember: If it's not in your profile, then we can't give you credit for it.

Add dates.It is very important that you include dates when appropriate. If we don’t know the date you received an award, then we assume the oldest date we can, which results in the minimum number of points for that entry.

Keep your profile updated. Recent awards, publications, etc. are given more weight than older ones when calculating your Avvo Rating. Laws change, and current accomplishments are a good indicator that you have kept up with the changes.

Attorneys who have not been disciplined and who are not seeking legal clients may request that their numerical Avvo Rating not be displayed on their profile. If approved, you will not be included in practice area search results, though licensing details and client reviews will remain visible on your individual profile.

Avvo’s goal is to make it easier for everyone to navigate the often-opaque legal industry. We create profiles and collect publicly available data for over 97\% of US attorneys. Claiming your profile on Avvo allows you to add more information about you and your practice, allowing us to provide a more accurate Avvo Rating.

We do not “adjust” ratings by request, nor do we remove attorney profiles.

Locate the message in the list, select the More Options icon next to it, and then select Spam.

The message will be moved to your spam folder. Plus, any future messages from the sender will be automatically filtered into your spam folder.

When a customer sends you a message via Avvo.com, we notify you in email. In most cases, you should be able to reply to the message directly from the email.

If reply by email is not working, do the following:

Sign in to your Avvo account.

Go to your Messages folder.

Select a message to read or reply to it.

We do not remove profiles from our site. The information in a lawyer profile is pulled from public records and publicly available information. If you are concerned that public information we share on our website is incorrect, please let us know and we will do our best to update it. You might also want to check with your state attorney licensing body to ensure that the information in your public record is up-to-date.

If you haven’t yet, you can also claim your Avvo profile and update information like your practice areas, work and academic experience, and professional achievements. You will also have the ability to ask for reviews from current and former clients and endorsements from other attorneys.

When youclaim your Avvo Profile, we will automatically calculate a numerical Avvo Rating that will appear on your profile page and in search results.

When we see a legal guide that satisfies our quality standards, we often award an Avvo Staff Pick. Criteria we consider:

By contrast, we occasionally take legal guides down from the site if they don't meet our minimum quality standards. Guides that are rejected most often fall into one or more of the following categories:

Written in a language other than English or Spanish

Not directed at the general public (e.g., meant for other attorneys)

Legal guides are Avvo's collection of lawyer-authored articles. Writing a good legal guide lets attorneys provide helpful advice that benefits consumers and demonstrates their proficiency in the areas of law they know best.

Additionally, if a guide proves to be a cut above the rest it may get an Avvo Staff Pick, which increases its ranking in our site search results, and also makes it a candidate to be featured on our landing pages.

Avvo has checks in place to maintain the quality and validity of reviews posted to our site: we require users to register before submitting a review, and we read every review before we allow it to be posted. If we have looked at the review in question and have determined that it meets Avvo’s Community Guidelines, there are a few things you can do.

Post a response to the review. There is a link at the bottom of each review for you to post a response. Your comment will be displayed immediately below the disputed review, and the most effective responses to negative feedback online can be a simple comment. This also sends a powerful message to potential clients about your professionalism and interest in feedback. Rather than arguing the substance of what the reviewer wrote, try something along the lines of: "We're sorry you had a bad experience with our firm. This matter does not sound familiar, and we strive for the utmost client satisfaction in every case. Please contact me directly to discuss your specific concerns."

Request that the review be put through our dispute process. If you believe the review has not come from an actual or potential client of yours, we will contact the reviewer and ask them to confirm that they were in fact a real or potential client, and give them the option to edit or delete the review. During the dispute, the review will not appear on your profile. If the reviewer responds and confirms the review, it will be reposted to your profile with any changes specified by the reviewer.

You may request additional reviews from current and former clients (keep in mind that the most recent reviews appear first on your profile).

Reviews do not affect the Avvo Rating. While endorsements from peers are a form of industry recognition - like to being asked to speak at a professional seminar or publishing an article - input from clients is very different. It may reflect positively or negatively on a professional, and may include comments that are more reflective of approach than ability. As people often find other feedback to be valuable, we have chosen to include reviews in a stand-alone section in each lawyer's profile, but not have those reviews impact the Avvo Rating.

Many reviewers choose to post anonymously, and we respect that choice. We do not reveal confidential user information. We believe this allows us to balance having an open forum while maintaining a respect for the reputational interests of attorneys.

Avvo provides an open forum for people to leave feedback for attorneys they have hired, consulted, or contacted. But we have checks in place to maintain the quality and validity of reviews. We require users to register before submitting a review, we read every review before it is posted, and we rely on the Avvo community to let us know if a review seems suspicious or incorrect. Ratings and reviews are feedback from people who have either consulted an attorney about an issue (but may not have hired the attorney) or people who hired an attorney as a current or former client. People can submit reviews to help other Avvo users make an informed decision about the attorneys they may be considering hiring. Avvo does not investigate or verify the substance of reviews. However, we may not post reviews that we believe do not meet our community guidelines.

If you don't see your profile on Avvo, make sure your name is spelled correctly or remove initials from your name when you search our directory. If you are still unable to locate your profile, we may not have it yet if you received your license recently. If this is the case, you can create a new profile on Avvo.

The bottom of any email you receive from Avvo should include a link to unsubscribe from future emails.

There are a few important things to keep in mind when thinking of filing a complaint:

Filing a complaint against an attorney is a serious matter, and should be limited to significant problems. Issues like slowness to respond, curtness, lack of empathy, condescension, or even sloppy legal work - while often meriting a cautionary review on Avvo - will rarely suffice. That's because in order for the regulators to punish an attorney for professional misconduct, they must find - with proof - that the attorney did something that violates the Rules of Professional Conduct.
