Executive Bio
Mr. John Kirwan serves as Managing Director of Global Banking & Markets, GBM and Global Head of Infrastructure, Global Banking & Markets and Head of GBM Europe at The Bank of Nova Scotia. Mr. Kirwan leads Scotiabank's corporate banking for the energy, infrastructure, power and utilities sectors. He provides leadership and oversight for Scotiabank's European operations. He serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Scotiabank Europe plc. He is responsible for the overall strategic direction and execution of Scotiabank's businesses in Europe. He is an executive member of the Scotiabank's senior leadership team. He has significant leadership experience to the role include, as Managing Director and Head, Global Infrastructure Finance and Head of Corporate Banking Europe. He has over 25 years of experience within the financial services industry, having held various roles with significant responsibilities. He joined Scotiabank in 2010 to establish infrastructure as a global business for Scotiabank and has held successive additional roles during this time. In July 2016, he returned from Toronto (Head Office), where he had additional responsibilities for managing and restructuring the Scotiabank's global Oil & Gas business (since April 2015). Prior to that, he was also Head of European Corporate Banking between November 2013 to April 2015 where he was responsible for the Scotiabank's corporate lending business in Europe, including risk strategy, asset recovery and appetite. Mr. Kirwan was at a major German public and municipal finance institution, where he was global head of the infrastructure, project finance and asset financing businesses with activities in over 40 countries. He served at a Brussels-based bank, as Senior Member of the power and energy group and was centrally involved as arranger and Advisor on many multi-sector transactions across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Mr. Kirwan holds a Master's Degree in Business and Bachelor's Degree in Economics from University College Dublin and in 2015 he successfully completed the Executive Management Program at Duke University.
