Mr. Philip Smith, also known as Phil, serves as Managing Director of Global Banking & Markets and Head, Debt Capital Markets and Equity Capital Markets for Global Banking and Markets at The Bank of Nova Scotia. Mr. Smith supports Scotiabank clients in the issuance of debt and equity securities in the capital markets. Over more than 23 years with the Bank, he has held a variety of increasingly senior roles in Finance, Operations, Investment Banking, Wealth Management and Equity Capital Markets at Scotiabank. He served as the Chief Financial Officer of Global Banking & Markets and Senior Vice President of Global Banking & Markets at The Bank of Nova Scotia. Mr. Smith was responsible for the oversight and leadership of all aspects of GBM's Operations groups and the Finance function. He plays a central role in influencing strategy and shaping the financial direction of the division. Mr. Smith served as Deputy Head of Global Investment Banking at Scotia Capital Inc. Prior to that, Mr. Smith served as Managing Director and Head of Investment Banking at Scotia Capital and oversaw the provision of general investment banking services in Canada including equity origination, strategic advisory services and equity syndication. Mr. Smith has held a variety of positions within Scotia Capital in the private client, equity capital markets and investment banking areas. He serves as a Director of Canadian Business Growth Fund, the Canadian Opera Company and Saint Elizabeth Health Care (St. Elizabeth Healthcare). He is an active member of the community, serving as a director on numerous charitable, arts and civic boards. He is also past Chair of the Investment Industry Association of Canada. Mr. Smith holds an M.B.A. in Analytic Finance from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University.
