Mr. Charles M. Gates, also known as Charlie, has been an Executive Vice President of Power Operations at Calpine Corporation since April 1, 2016. Previously, Mr. Gates served as the Chief Fossil/Hydro Officer and Senior Vice President of Duke Energy Corporation until April 1, 2016. Mr. Gates has 30 years of experience in the energy industry. Mr. Gates served as Senior Vice President of Power Generation Operations for Duke Energy since July 2012. At Duke, Mr. Gates was responsible for all regulated non-nuclear generation assets, including significant budgets and approximately 42,000 MWs of generation capacity. Prior to that, Mr. Gates served as Senior Vice President of the Power Generation Group for Progress Energy, where he oversaw the operations and technical support of its fossil and hydro generation. He served as Vice President of Power Generation for Progress Energy Carolinas at Progress Energy Inc. since January 2012. Previously, Mr. Gates served as a Power Plant Manager and General Manager of Fossil Plant Regions at Progress Energy Inc. He served as Vice President of Fossil Generation at Progress Energy Inc. He has also held several engineering positions at both the plant and corporate levels. He was previously General Manager of Progress Energy Florida at Carolina Power & Light Company from 2001 to 2006. Mr. Gates began his power industry career with Carolina Power & Light in 1982 as an associate engineer and moved up through increasingly responsible positions to become General Manager of five fossil-fuel plants in 2000. He served in various leadership roles within the fossil generation department and has worked in both the Carolinas and Florida. Mr. Gates??? other industry leadership roles include serving as Chairman of the Generation Council for the Electric Power Research Institute. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, a national engineering honor society. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
