Dr. Patrick H. Nettles Ph.D., has served as Director of Progressive Corporation since 2004. Dr. Nettles has been a Director of Ciena Corp since April 1994 and has been its Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors since May 2001. From October 2000 to May 2001, Dr. Nettles was Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of Ciena, and he was President and Chief Executive Officer from April 1994 to October 2000. Dr. Nettles serves as a Trustee for the California Institute of Technology and the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc. Dr. Nettles also serves on the boards of directors of The Progressive Corporation and Axcelis Technologies, Inc., where he is independent chairman of the board. Dr. Nettles has previously served on the boards of directors of Apptrigger, Inc., formerly known as Carrius Technologies, Inc., and Optiwind Corp, a privately held company. Dr. Nettles has extensive technical experience, including his experience working as an engineer. He holds Ph.D. in physics from California Institute of Technology in 1970 and also BS in Physics in Georgia Institute of Technology in 1964.
