They think the CEO is a great guy, passionate about the mission of the company and has built something special. However, the general feeling is its time to bring in someone else with more experience to help the business continue to grow and scale.
everyone loves the CEO, he's a great guy but most feel its time to bring in a more experienced CEO based on where the company is and where its trying to go.

Most positions are posted both internally and externally with following a standard process. There are some promotions that aren't given to an individual who has been working towards it and earned it, without a formal process. In my experience promotions have been handled fairly and communicated well.
