Credly FAQs

Credly's Frequently Asked Questions page is a central hub where its customers can always go to with their most common questions. These are the 120 most popular questions Credly receives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Credly

  • To begin creating a badge, Visit your "Created" tab and then click on "+Badge" -- or just click the " Give " link in the top navigation.

    The Badge Image

You can choose whether to upload your own badge image to visually represent the Credit you create, or you may use the Credit Builder to create an image online. (You can always start by creating a badge using the Builder and later edit to change/add a new image.)

    1. To upload your own badge image, on the home page of the Credit Builder, click the "upload your own design" link:

    2. Then click the "Upload a new image" button:

Follow the on-screen instructions to load your own badge image. In creating your own badge images for upload, for best results, we recommend:

Square image size (i.e. equal height and width dimensions)

Recommended size 600 x600 pixels or higher

    Using a transparent background

    File format: PNG

    File size maximum: 2MB

If instead you would like to use an image from the Credit Builder, start by clicking on the "Customize This" button.

Use the tools in the navigational panel on the left to customize shape, icon, and banner text, or to select or upload an icon into your badge image.

    Text Fields

To the right of the Credit Builder, you will see the text fields to "Describe this Credit".

    1. Enter your information for "Title" and "Short Description" (you can type or copy/paste from your document).

    2. Click on the blue "+" sign to open the next window and to enter the longer Description and Criteria. Again you can type or copy/paste. Notice both fields allow for hyperlinking and formatting. Some badges may carry an expiration date, which you can establish here.

Categories provide a way to organize your created badges. You can choose from thousands of pre-existing skill, competency and vocational categories or you can add your own. These are similar to tags that help organize badges across the broader digital credential ecosystem, beyond any single issuer.

    3. When you finish with this window, be sure to click the "Save Info" button.

    4. You will be brought back to the first screen. If you are ready, click "Save". If you are an enterprise level client, after saving you must additionally "Publish."

  • How do I add Managers and Reporters to my account?

From the User Management area, enterprise owners can add Managers and Reporters to the account.

An individual must have an active account on Credly in order to be added as either a Manager or Reporter.

A Manager can create, edit and issue badges on behalf of the organization. Because this individual has complete access to the data, and can delete and revoke all badges, be sure this is a trustworthy (and trained) individual.

A Reporter can only access the data on issued badges. A Reporter cannot edit or alter badges.

To add an individual, start by typing the name in the search field and then select the individual.

If your issuer has added blockchain as an option to your digital badge, you’ll find the option under the Share button when you look at your badge.

you can set that badge to be private

Once you click on Share, you’ll be brought to a screen that will allow for many options, including Publish. From there you can Publish to blockchain.

Verification of successful publication will look like this:

Publishing to the blockchain is permanent. If you decide after publishing that you do not want others to see that badge (or the blockchain verification),. Still, your public keys are stored in your Account Settings (for both public and private badges).

Also, in case you’re wondering, if a viewer wants to verify your credential, they would see a screen like the screen below. That said, depending on traffic, it may take upwards of 20 minutes for the record to be written to the blockchain. Therefore, if you want to test the verification process, we advise that you wait.

AutoShare works in connection with two other Credly features: Personal Categories and Social Settings. Here's a little background on each, which helps explain how AutoShare works:

Personal Categories:When accepting or managing Credit, you have the option to place each Credit into one or more personal categories you create. Note that when you "Trust an Issuer", you can also set the categories into which Credit from that issuer should be sorted. This makes it easy for your Credit from the museum or school to get automatically placed in your "Museum" or "Education" categories, for example. (You can later change or add categories, even for automatically accepted and sorted Credit.)

Social Settings:In your Account Settings area you can link your Credly account to one or more social networks, such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Mozilla Backpack. One might use their work email address for job-related communications, and a personal address like Gmail or Yahoo for personal correspondence. When it comes to receiving credit where credit is due, different people and organizations may issue you Credit at your different email addresses, yet you'd still like to manage, share and store all of your Credit in the same Credly account. And you can!

  • What is an Authorized Issuer?

You can create any of your badges on credly.com and “authorize” others to issue that badge using their email address. These users will now be able to issue this badge but will not be able to edit any of the badge details. This enables you to let lots of people issue badges within your courses without having to make them all managers.

When creating or editing a badge, you may notice “Allow others to give this credit”.

Here are the step by step instructions. First, keep in mind that those you wish to authorize to issue your badge must already have a Credly individual or organization account.

    Premier and higher

In the top left, start typing the name of a Credly member until recognized, and then select the name from the drop-down list. Or, enter the exact email address of another Credly member. You can also choose from contacts already listed by hovering over their names and clicking ”Add”. Users who appear on the right side of the window will be authorized once you save the changes in the box (click “save” button), and then “Save” the badge in the main badge builder.

To de-authorize a specific user from issuing a badge, click “Edit Authorized Users” in the badge builder area for the select badge, or uncheck “Allow others to give this credit” and “Save” the changes.

Those you Authorize will see your badge in their “Our Credit” > “Created” tab, under “all” or “Authorized”. Authorized badge issuers cannot edit or delete your badges; they can only issue them. They will have access to your Tags when issuing an Authorized badge.

You’ll see the badges Authorized users issue in your Reports. Use the “Filter by Issuer” field to limit your Report to badges issued by your Authorized issuers.

If you also use CLE, you can enable your authorized issuers from within your LMS.

Enable Authorized Issuers to create rules for badges within your LMS

In your LMS, the new “My Credentials” tool allows instructors to add rules for automating badge issuing for learners who met preset criteria. By enhancing the digital credential issuing process, instructors can save time and help improve their students’ engagement.

With the new feature of ‘Authorized Issuers’ in your LMS,

    1. Instructors will get access to badges that have been authorized by the admin

    2. Instructors can start to issue badges to individual earners

    3. Instructors can set up badge automation rules for each badge so they don’t have to manually issue them every time a student meets the passing criteria.

How does the user experience change in my LMS?

The only change you’ll note is in the top left badge filter. There is an additional option to list your authorized badges. This will also appear for any of the instructors who you have authorized.

This feature is available tolevel members.

  • Issuing digital credentials

There are four primary methods for issuing a credential. When you begin the process to “Give” a credential, you will see the dropdown menu with: Add Members, Add Manually, Upload a CSV File, Anyone with a Claim Code

    Add Members and Add Manually

If you type in a member name, it will recognize the individual as a member and add the email. If you add the email, it will recognize the individual as a member and add member name.

If you are not sure of membership, add the name and email.

These methods are good for small volume issuing.

    Upload a CSV File

For larger batches, you might want to consider uploading a CSV file.

When in Step 2 of the "give" process, choose "Upload a CSV File" from the "Who would you like to give credit to" drop down menu. Click "Choose CSV file" and then watch your file load and your list of recipients automatically populate.

  • Yes!When you create or edit a digital credential, look for the checkbox “Allow others to claim this credit.”

With this “Badge Claim” option turned on, a complete set of credential-granting opportunities are unlocked for you and your credential recipients. Badge Claim has three major modes, which can be used in any combination, allowing you to adjust the feature to a wide range of contexts:

    Developer Portal

Claim Code:When enabled, credentials you offer may be collected by those who have a valid code, which is created, controlled and managed by the issuer.

Evidence Submissions:Activate this powerful option to require that those who earn your credentials first supply one or more specified pieces of evidence. The evidence provided by the user joins any evidence you may have included as part of the permanent record of the achievement. In addition to requesting an artifact for evidence (a link, document, video, etc.) you can request the earner to submit a brief statement in a textbox. If you click on the pencil icon to the far right, the box will open. Anything added to the box will be preserved as a PDF when you click the "Save" button in the toolbar.

Approval:Ensure fidelity to your requirements by approving all requests to claim a credential, or set to Automatic mode to scale the issuing process and immediately showcase a growing collection of achievements and rich media artifacts associated with your cause, mission or programs.

Many Convenient Ways to Claim Credentials

After editing or creating a badge that can be claimed, in Step 2 of the issuing process, choose the “anyone with a code” option.

Create as many Claim Codes as desired, delete codes as needed, and track their usage. Set a Claim Limit and Expiration to limit a code’s availability to a certain number of people or until a specified date. These features can help you offer limited edition opportunities, or define the time period during which you will be available to review submitted evidence and issue credentials.

Members with Premier accounts or higher can specify their own unique claim codes (of as few as three easy to remember characters). This feature is especially useful for events, conferences, and other in-person activities; organizational branding and sponsorship opportunities; and the issuing of commemorative badges or outreach via social media.

After creating Claim opportunities for your badges and credentials, we’ve made informing your audience about the availability of your certifications super easy. In one click, you can share your badge claim codes and links on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn, or copy your code for use on your site, emails or other systems. You can even send the claim code using an integrated email notification system (branded with your logoor banner, if you are Premier issuer). And you’ll get a notification when badges requiring approval are claimed.

Recipients visit Credly.com/claim to enter claim codes and earn badges, follow unique links Credly generates for you, or access claim codes or claim links found in your site, app or learning experience.

    Analytics and Reporting

Credly Reports, found in the “My Credit” area of your account, offers powerful analytics about the use, visibility, and sharing of the credentials you issue. Keep track of how many badges are claimed, who has earned them, and where issued badges are being shared. Reports, which are searchable and exportable in real time, also display the total number of times a badge is seen, clicked, shared or viewed across Credly and all Open Credit enabled apps and sites, give you the metrics you need to track impact of credentials over time.

How Credly Issuers are Using Badge Claim

Some of the ways issuers are using the new features include:

Asking event participants to submit artifacts, links, photos, media or reflections to earn credentials for participation, while forming a useful collection of resources

Disseminating custom or vanity claim codes to easily issue massive numbers of credentials and badges reward participation and achievement at scale

Collecting evidence and artifacts in exchange for certifications and badges

  • Credly gives you the ability to embed earned badges or credentials on to your own web site or blog. We also give a range of configuration options so you can choose the look and feel of the Credit as it appears on your own site. If you want to only embed one badge, follow the instructions to embed a single badge here.

However, you can effectively use categories to embed a group of badges.

Visit your "My Credit" section from the user menu at the top right corner of the site, and visit your "Categories" page.Personal Categories help you manage your Credit and make it easy to share select Credit to your social networks or your own website or blog.Add new personal Categories from your "My Credit" page by clicking the "Add Category" button at the bottom of the page.(Learn more about personal " Categories.")

Once you create a category, you need to put the badge in the category. To do this, go back to My Credit and mouse over a badge. Click on Manage.

You can then use the dropdown area at Select Category and select one or more categories. Remember to click Apply and then Save.

Now on the "Categories" page you will also see an</>icon associated with each category you have created. Use that to configure, copy and paste the embed code for the Credit in that category to any site, such as your personal web site or blog.

A dialog box will open and allow you to decide how you'd like to see your badges displayed. For example, in the image, we have circled the 540 px grid. By clicking on that grid, you will select that layout. After you select a grid option (i.e. the 540px grid), the "Get Embed Code" button will appear. Click that and embed code specific for your badges appears. Copy the code and paste it as HTML onto any web page where you'd like it to appear.Other options include:

Display badge titles: When checked, will include the name of the Credit in text, along with the badge image.

Display issuer names: When checked, the embedded Credit will include the name of the person or organization that issued you the Credit.

Number of Badges displayed: This limits the Credit displayed to the selected number of most recent Credit received.

  • Credly would like to introduce a new feature that allows Enterprise issuers the option to disable the notification email when issuing badges. You’ll find this feature as a checkbox at the bottom of Step 2 when issuing badges.

The default setting for this feature is set to notify recipients by email. When this option is unchecked, a badge will be sent to your Earners account. However, they will not receive a notification email.

Please Note:This feature is restricted to badges created and issued by enterprises issuers only.

  • Managers and owners of an Enterprise account have the option to preview a new issuer layout, which is currently in beta development. Just select “Preview new issuer layout” from the top right menu to toggle your view. You'll see a "Back to Classic Credly” in the same place on the layout.

In the Beta UI we’ve updated the view of your badges under the created tab to be in a more condensed list view so you can quickly scroll through all of your badges at a glance.

It’s even easier to track down the badge you’re looking for with enhanced ways to sort your collection and an enhanced search feature.

Badge Filters allow you to quickly search through all of your badges with the following options. By default, you'll see all of your badges in one list but you can use these filters to narrow that list down.

All: All badges that were created by your organization, Enterprise Issuers, and badges that other organizations have authorized you to issue.

Created: Badges that your organization has created.

Enterprise Issuer: Badges that your enterprise issuers have created.

Authorized: Badges that other organizations have authorized you to issue.

For each of your badges you’ll see more information about how it’s being used within your enterprise. You’ll also see new columns in this view:

Badge title: Shows the badge title and the badge image.

Status: Represents available actions for “Created Badges” and “Enterprise Issuer Badges.”

Creator: Display the name of the Organization the badge was created by.

Last Issued: Date of when the badge was issued by your Organization.

Action: Action on each badge that you’re able to perform. Give, Edit, Show/Hide, Add to category, and Delete. These actions will differ from badge to badge depending on your permission.

Global Search allows you to begin typing the title of a badge and dynamically populate a list with all available badges that contain your text string.

Draft Mode is a new and long-awaited tool to improve the process of creating and editing badges. When you use “Draft Mode,” you will be able to create new badges without having to immediately publish them to your site, making time for review processes, collaboration with your team, or just needing a little more time to work on it.

You’ll see a “Save” and “Publish” option when creating your badges.

Save: Saves the badge as a draft.

Publish: Saves and publishes the badge to your Enterprise site.

  • The Custom Assertion Location feature allows Credly Premier members to redirect accepted badges they issue to their own website. This means that badges shown on a user’s Credly profile or that they share on various social networks will redirect when clicked to the website URL the issuer provides, instead of to Credly. In this manner, issuers can enjoy several benefits, such as:

Extra Validity:The validity and authenticity of the credit is reinforced, as the badge assertion is displayed on your domain.

Enhanced Branding:White label the badge assertion page by placing it on your site.

Additional Context:Customize where and how you display credit on your site, offering additional information about your programs and offerings, enrollment opportunities, or other information for observers when they click through to learn about earned badges.

Your Analytics:With badges redirected to your site, you can leverage your own web site analytics to track traffic directly to your site from badges you issue.

What does a Custom Assertion Location look like in action?

When a Custom Assertion Location is in place, click-throughs from accepted badges that you have issued are redirected to the website you specify in your Account Settings. Credly appends the ID number of the badge to the URL string you provide.

Here is an example of a Custom Assertion Location, whereby the Credly badge was redirected to a non-Credly website:

    https://credly.com/credit/10318/embed

    How does this work?

Credly Premier members will see a Custom Assertion Location option in the “Account Settings” area of their account:

The format of a Custom Assertion Location URL string is:

    http://example.com/credly/{id}

In the Custom Assertion Location field, you can add the URL where you would like badges to redirect when clicked. In the above example, the Custom Assertion Location provided by the Credly issuer in their Account Settings area was:

    http://aaslhcommunity.org/cert/?ID={id}

When you enter a URL containing the pattern {id}, and “Save Changes” to accept the settings, the Credly Open Credit API will dynamically substitute the {id} token with the IDs of the badges you issue. From that moment forth, all badges issued by your Credly account -- past and future -- will redirect to your URL when clicked from Credly profiles or from any social networks or sites where they are shared by the earner.

Here are live links as an example, based on the above illustration: https://credly.com/credit/8058 redirects to http://aaslhcommunity.org/cert/?ID=8058

How does the Custom Assertion Location make use of the {id} token?

Once we redirect the badge assertion to your site, you have several options. You can pull the {id} value from the URL string and use one of these approaches to dynamically customize what you display to visitors:

Use our special “embed” assertion link to easily embed the credit’s assertion information on your site, usually using an iframe (details below)

Retrieve the {id} token value Credly passes to your site and do a look-up using the Credly Open Credit API to get any or all metadata about the particular credit (i.e. title, issuer, description, issue and expiration date, badge image, evidence link, testimonial, etc.), and then display all or select data in any style or manner you choose on your site.

Retrieve the {id} token value Credly passes to your site and customize the display based on information stored on your own site (i.e. based on the badge ID and its relation to information stored in your own database, you could cater the display to show additional context specific to programs you offer).

None of these options are mutually exclusive. The Open Credit API is documented elsewhere and its use will vary from issuer to issuer in the context of how you wish to implement Custom Assertion Locations, so we will focus here on the first option listed above: Use of the Credly Assertion “Embed” URL.

Using the Custom Assertion Location “Embed” Link:

The Custom Assertion Location “Embed” link essentially provides you with a white labeled version of the assertion page for a credit on Credly. It is designed to be suitable for embedding an issued credit assertion on any web page on your site, and is especially helpful for the Custom Assertion Location redirects we’ve been describing here.

The format for the assertion “embed” link is:

    https://credly.com/credit/{id}/embed

where {id} is the ID for an accepted member badge. For example, if this is the standard link to a badge:

    https://credly.com/credit/10318

then this is the embed link to that badge:

Note:The content width of Credly’s special embed link is 590 pixels. One of the most common ways to make use of this “embed” link with Custom Assertion Location Links activated, is to place it in an iframe on your own website, and then to retrieve the {id} token from your page URL and place it in the iframe in your page. For example:

    <iframe align='top' marginwidth ='0' src='http://credly.com/credit/$val/embed' width='590' height='1000' scrolling='no' frameborder='no'></iframe>

where $val is the placeholder for the {id} token value received from Credly’s redirect.

Example for Retrieving the ID token:

The approach you use to retrieve and embed the {id} value into the iframe will depend on the programming languages and web protocols you use in your particular context. But here is an example of a simple script for those who use php:

    <?php $val = $_GET['ID']; echo "<iframe align='top' marginwidth ='0' src='http://credly.com/credit/$val/embed' width='590' height='1000' scrolling='no'frameborder='no'></iframe>"; ?>

In the above example, the Custom Assertion Location you place in your Credly Account Settings would contain the parameter “ID”. In Credly, the link you provide might look something like this:

    http://example.com/certifications/?ID={id}

where http://example.com/certifications is the page on your site where you’d like to direct custom Credly credit assertions and where you have the php script embedded and ready to accept the parameter “ID”.

  • Credly members can upload a list of users to bulk issue credit. When in Step 2 of the "give" process, choose "Upload a CSV File" from the "Who would you like to give credit to" drop down menu. Click "Choose CSV file" and then watch your file load and your list of recipients automatically populate.

    Enterprise

Here are some guidelines for preparing your CSV file:

Create a header row with the following in individual columns:

First Name, Last Name, Email address, Testimonial, Evidence

Populate your spreadsheet. First Name, Last Name, Email address are required fields.

Testimonial and Evidence are optional. If you are not including a testimonial or evidence for a given person, leave those cells blank.

Issue Date: IF you want to back-date a badge, add a column with the header Issue Date. Be sure to populate the entire column if you do this. If you do not use this column, the issue date will default to today's date. It is not possible to issue using a future date.

You must use quotation marks around your testimonial or any field containing commas.

The only acceptable value for the optional Evidence field is a link beginning with http:// or https://.

If you are not including a testimonial, evidence or an issue date for a given person, leave those cells blank.

Help on exporting a CSV file from other applications:

Applications (including Microsoft Excel, Google Spreadsheets, and iWork Numbers) allow you to export data into a comma-delimited text file (.csv), which you can import into Credly as a list of credit recipients. The exact steps for each application vary but should follow the same general approach:

Launch your selected application and view your list.

Ensure your CSV fields are in the required Credly format. See guidelines above.

Select the Save As... or Export... menu option, usually from the File menu.

Follow the directions to save the file in a Comma Separated Values or CSV format.

Now choose the file to import into Credly.

Tip:If exporting from Microsoft Excel, choose the file format "Windows Comma Separated (.csv)" when saving your document as a CSV file.

Note: It is recommended that you import a small test file of about five people before importing your entire list to ensure that you have correctly prepared your import file.

After you import a CSV and issue a badge to the people in the CSV list, you will be invited to save the recipients into a list you can re-use and re-issue credit to at a later time. Name the list, and then look for it again in Step 2 when it's time to give the group another badge.

Note on Batch Issuing: All users can issue credit using CSV upload to up to 50 recipients at any one time. (You can repeat to additional groups of recipients as often as needed.) Premier users can issue credit via CSV file upload to 250 and 1000 recipients at once respectively:users have no limits.

  • Not a problem! This can happen to people who use multiple email addresses for different aspects of their life.

Let's say you're already a Credly member but someone comes along and sends you Credit using an email address that you have not yet associated with your Credly account.

If you are already logged in to the Credly sitewhen you click through from the email to "Accept" the Credit, we'll automatically add the new email address to your Credly account, and we will send you an email message asking you to verify you own the email address. Once you do that, you'll be able to accept the Credit that was sent to that new email address and have it join your Credly account with your other Credit.

If you are not logged in to Credlywhen you click through the email to accept your new Credit, we'll automatically add the new email address to your account after you login and verify the new email address.

NOTE:You can proactively associate all of your email addresses to your Credly account -- and we recommend you do. That way, all Credit people issue you in the future -- no matter what email address of yours they use -- will find its way to your Credly account. This allows you to manage all of your Credit in one place. See the Knowledge Base entry " Can I add other email addresses to my account? " for details.

  • Concatenation is great for personalizing a testimonial. The steps can seem complicated but the short version is:

Create an Excel spreadsheet with firstname, lastname, email.

In the 4th column, add your message and copy down the column.

Use the 5th column to Insert Function --> Concatenate.

Once you have the message concatenated, copy down the column.

Save the file as a CSV (window separated if working on a Mac) and close.

Reopen the CSV and delete the extra column (column D), save and close.

If it's your first time in the app, visit the Settings area to link your Eventbrite account to your Credly account.

Visit the Issue Attendee Badges option in the menu, and click " Schedule Badge Delivery ". Follow the steps on screen.

Here's a video tutorial that walks you through how to get started:

You can issue badges to all event registrants or just to those who have checked in to the event (i.e. who have had their ticket bar code scanned using the Eventbrite Entry Manager ).

There is also the option to send badges immediately, to send them daily to all new registrants until the event ends, or to set delivery for a specific time and date.

You can alsoimport Eventbrite attendeesinto your Credly Contact Lists so that you can issue badges to some or all of the attendees during or after your event. Learn more.
