  • Take a look at our Sharing After Death Video Walkthrough.

When you add a new Deputy (or change an existing Deputys permissions) well ask you to choose which sections of your plan you want to share now, and which sections should be locked until after youre gone.

Any sections thatyou'vechosen to lock until after your passing will remain unavailable to your Deputies until the time comes.

In order for your After Death sections to be unlocked, you must give one of your Deputies the responsibility and permission to report your death to Everplans and initiate the unlocking process.

After reporting your death, the Deputy must wait for a period of time while Everplans attempts to contact you via email with the opportunity to block the unlocking. You can choose a wait time for your Deputy of up to 30 days.

If we do not hear back from you and the wait time expires, you are marked as deceased in our database, and your After Death sections are unlocked for all your Deputies.

  • If you are seeing lock icons next to certain sections, it means that the Everplanner has marked those sections as only available to you after they pass away. Those sections will remain locked until the person has been reported as deceased and the unlocking process completes.

If you are a Deputy with the responsibility of reporting the Everplanners death and starting the unlocking process, youll see a link to report the person as deceased from their Everplan page. You should also have received an email explaining the responsibility.

Click the Report as Deceased link to initiate the process.

After reporting a death on Everplans, you must wait for a period of time while Everplans attempts to contact the person whose Everplan you are trying to unlock. Everplans will contact them via email with the opportunity to block the unlocking.

The period of time that elapses while Everplans attempts to contact the individual is called the wait time. The wait time is set by the Everplanner for their own security, and can be up to 30 days.

Once the wait time expires, and if the Everplanner has not blocked the unlocking, the After Death sections are unlocked. Any Deputies with After Death permissions are notified via email, and they will be able to log in and view the recently unlocked sections.

Note: If youdon'tsee the link to report the individual as deceased, it means that someone else was given the responsibility to report their passing to Everplans and start the unlocking of their After Death sections. In this case, youll be notified via email when After Death sections become available.

Note: Some of our customers have been given access by a financial advisor to a jointly-managed Household Everplan which includes information on both spouses. Everplans policy is that we do not unlock any After Death sections until both members of the Household are reported deceased.

  • Once you have chosen sections of your Everplan to be shared After Death, you must give one of your Deputies the permission and responsibility of unlocking your information when the time comes.

You can give the unlocking permission to an existing Deputy or to a new Deputy.

Go to the My Deputies page under Secure Sharing.

Select Manage After Death unlocking permission from the dropdown. A new window will open.

Select Allow to give the Deputy the ability to report your death to Everplans and initiate the unlocking process.

Select a Wait Time for the Deputy. After reporting your death, the Deputy must wait for a period of time while Everplans attempts to contact you via email with the opportunity to block the unlocking. You can choose a wait time for your Deputy of up to 30 days.

Click or tap the Save button. Everplans will notify the Deputy via email of the change in their permissions.

We recommend adding multiple unlockers to prevent your Everplan from being inaccessible from your Deputies.

Remove unlocking permission from an existing Deputy

Select Do not allow from the unlocking permission window.

Click or tap the Save button. Everplans will notify the Deputy via email of the change in their permissions.

  • When adding a new Deputy, individuals can choose which sections of their Everplan they want to make available to each Deputy. You may not have been granted permission to all sections at this time.

Another possibility is that individuals youre a Deputy for might not have entered any information for those sections. In that case, the sections will be come available as soon as the data is available.

In addition, Everplanners have the ability to keep sections private until they pass away. If you see a lock icon next to some sections, it means those sections will become available to you when the individual is reported as deceased.

  • For individuals:

Everplans will stop future billing and auto-renewal for the deceased persons membership.

Everplans will prevent any additional modifications to the information in the deceased persons Everplan.

Everplans will ensure that all Deputies can access the deceased persons Everplan for 12 months.

In addition to the safeguarding measures listed above, if the person had locked parts of their Everplans until after they pass away, the unlocking process begins.

    For households:

Some of our customers have been given access by their financial advisor to a jointly-managed Household Everplan which includes information on both spouses.

When you report an individual as deceased in a Household Everplan, well disable the deceased persons login. The remaining person will receive a notification.

The deceased persons After Death sections will remain locked. We ask you, as a Deputy, to reach out to the remaining member of the Household if you need access to any of the deceased persons information.

When you report the surviving member of a Household Everplan as deceased, depending on whether the Everplan has any After Death sections, well take the same steps as we do for Individual Everplans (see above).

  • We recommend adding any information that is already available to you on-hand as your first action (e.g. Vital Info, Online Accounts, and any items you've already completed outside of Everplans). Our belief is that getting some information into your Everplan should help to create momentum for people about their planning. Once you've begun to flesh things out, we recommend adding at least one Deputy as your second action. Your Everplan becomes infinitely more valuable if there's someone on the other end who can access all of this great planning.

  • Everplans is not a licensed legal service; were an online service company dedicated to providing a simple, secure way to make sureyou'vetaken care of everything youd want your loved ones to have access to should something happen to you. To accomplish this, we do three things: First, we take you through a short assessment where we ask a few simple questions that allow us to make personalized recommendations on good next steps what we call To-Dos based on your planning history and family situation. Second, we provide resources to help get those To-Dos done. For To-Dos that require professional legal services (like Wills, Power of Attorney and Trusts), we make recommendations for online legal companies. For To-Dos that you can tackle on your own (like Living Will and Health Proxy), we offer downloadable forms that you can print out and get signed and witnessed (and notarized in the states that require it). Third, we offer a single, secure place to upload all of the information about your planning so the important people you designate as Deputies can easily access everything in one place. You can also upload scans of your important documents (like Wills and Living Wills). Since most of these documents need to have original signatures (and, in some cases, be notarized) the scanned version is not considered a legally valid document they are more of a reference for your family so they can quickly and easily know what you wanted. We also provide a place to tell your family where the original signed copies are, if they ever need them. In sum: Think of Everplans as a trustworthy guide and reliable coordinator for end-of-life planning - just know that we are in no way able to provide legal advice in place of a professional. Be sure to check out the Learn tab for each item on your To-Dos checklist for additional state-specific resources.

  • We’re confident in our security, but we can’t vouch for the entire internet.

No matter how secure Everplans is, when something like Heartbleed happens, hackers can gain access to a variety of sites you use by obtaining just one password since many people use the same one across multiple services.

    two-step verification

Enter . With this safeguard enabled, whenever you login to your Everplans account from an unrecognized computer or device, you’ll be required to confirm your identity by inputting a simple 6-digit code that we send to you via text message or robo-phone call.

This prevents anyone from gaining access to your most sensitive personal information just because they snagged your go-to password from a site that’s less secure than ours.

  • Billing for Everplans is done through Stripe, a credit card processing company used by many large online businesses. We've thoroughly examined their security and operations and feel confident that they will provide the necessary quality of experience.

This means that Everplans will not have access to your actual billing info like credit card numbers - these are all stored and managed through Stripe's highly secure system.

Stripe lets Everplans know when users create accounts (and when their subscriptions expire), and Everplans updates your subscription accordingly.

Currently, all Everplans accounts are billed and automatically renewed on a yearly basis.

  • Because your security and privacy is paramount to us, Everplans administrators and engineers do not have access to your sensitive personal information.

We limit our administrators' access to the limited set of data necessary to help grant you access to your account (by triggering confirmation emails, for example) and help you restrict access to your account in urgent circumstances (such as by limiting or removing a Deputy's access).

Everplans administrators can never see the plan information that you fill out or any documents that you upload. They may have access to limited meta-data (such as whether or not you uploaded a will) but not the data itself (they will never be able to see the will you uploaded).

Everplans logs and regularly audits all accesses to your account, whether by you, an administrator or your Deputies.

  • Everplans knows top-of-the-line security is paramount when protecting sensitive information. We also recognize that in using our service, you are trusting us with the most important information and documents you own and wedon'ttake that lightly.

Bank-level security means that your important personal information is encrypted and protected using the same industry-leading technology that banks use. For more details about both our operational practices and commitment to security, please keep reading.

    Securing Your Data at Rest

Within our systems, all your data is stored using AES-256 encryption with a uniquely derived key for each user following the recommendations of NIST Special Publication 800-132. We encrypt every single personally identifiable field in the database, including your name and email address. For searching and indexing, we hash a small number of fields using HMAC. We apply the same encryption technique to all files you upload.

As with all systems such as ours, the security of your information depends on you. You must choose a strong password (we enforce that as best we can) and you should never share your password with anyone. Everplans provides a much more secure system for sharing information with those you care about via our Deputy function.

    Securing Your Data in Transit

All communications between you and Everplans are encrypted via SSL using 2048-bit certificates and we require SSL on all communications. We are implementing perfect forward secrecy so that even if someone eavesdrops on your communication, they will still not be able to decrypt the data in the event that our key is compromised.

Operational Procedures to Keep the Site Secure

Everplans follows best practices to keep your data secure. In addition to severely restricting access to operational environments (including private keys), we regularly audit our environments and code for security issues and apply patches expeditiously. We use commercial services that regularly check our site (including McAfee Secure) and we also retain our own security experts to probe and verify the security of our site.

    Administrative Access to Your Information

Because your security and privacy is paramount to us, we limit what access our administrators have to your account to the limited set of data necessary to help grant you access to your account (by triggering confirmation emails, for example) and help you restrict access to your account in urgent circumstances (such as by limiting or removing a Deputy's access). Everplans administrators can never see the plan information that you fill out or any documents that you upload. They may have access to limited meta-data (such as whether or not you uploaded a will) but not the data itself (they will never be able to see the will you uploaded).
