  • Frequently Asked Questions:

What does “unlock your perks” mean and why do you keep saying it?

It’s one of our favorite things to say! ExpertVoice has partnered with hundreds of brands that want to reward people who are passionate and experienced with insider access, sneak peeks, product seeding and exclusive discounts. In order to access these awesome benefits, you have to prove that you’re an expert. Once you affiliate with a group and show us what you’re made of, you can unlock your perks.

What does it mean to have access to a brand?

Some of the biggest brands in the world allow you to interact with their exclusive content - learning more about their products, providing your feedback, chances to test new products and the opportunity to shop their store at an awesome discount. Not everyone gets these perks, however, only experts whose passion and experience match the brand's theme and values. Brands target experts based on groups, so once you’ve joined a group that a brand is targeting, you’ll have access to that brand and its benefits.

For example: Black Diamond is a climbing brand that’s looking for experts who are members of climbing gym groups. If you join one of those groups, you'll get access to Black Diamond and its perks.

How many groups can I affiliate with (join)?

There is no limit. If, for example, you work retail at a ski shop but teach fly fishing on the weekends, you’re an expert in both and we think you should be rewarded for all that knowledge.

Why do I lose access to a brand?

You may lose access to a brand because your group affiliation has expired and it’s time to update. If you notice you're missing a brand, go to your profile and check the Affiliations section on the left-hand side. Expired affiliations will have a red “EXPIRED” under them. Click on that “EXPIRED” alert to renew. In some instances, you no longer have access because that brand is no longer with ExpertVoice.

Why don’t I see any brands on my homepage feed?

This can happen for a couple reasons.

You haven’t joined a group yet.

This is an important step in unlocking your access to brands and it’s easy to do. Just follow our step-by-step guide here (redirect to I Want More Brands page) to find and join a group that matches your expertise. Then your expert perks will be unlocked and you’ll see brands on your feed.

Your affiliation application is still pending.

Because of the exclusivity of ExpertVoice, we want to make sure our experts are legit. You are part of an elite group, and we do our due diligence to make sure no one is cheating the system. It usually only takes a day or two for us to confirm your group affiliation, but if it’s taking longer or you want to ask questions, contact our Expert Success Team they’re here for you.

Why do I sometimes have more than one store available for a brand?

Based on brands’ targeting, they may want to offer some groups a certain discount, and other groups a different perk like a sneak peek or early access to a new product. If you’re part of both of these groups, you’ll see both stores so you can choose. If we were you, we’d choose the one with the better discount.

Sometimes there may be a special promotion for a new product. One store may have just that product (or product line), while the other store has the products you’d typically see. You’re free to explore each store and decide which one has the goods you’re most interested in.

What if I work for two groups that have access? Is there a way to merge my account vs. having two separate ones?

If you have one account and want to add additional groups to your account, you can do that by logging in to ExpertVoice, click on “Profile” from the dropdown menu on the top right of your screen, and click on “Add Affiliation” under the Affiliations window on your profile page.

We only allow one account per member. If have multiple accounts we will need to to “merge” the accounts, we can do that by deactivating one account and adding your email address to the other. However, any activity (such as Edu-Games completed, purchase history, work history, profile, etc.) from the deactivated account will not transfer to the active account. The benefit is that either email would now log them in to the same account. To do this, you can reach out to our Expert Success Team.

What affiliations give me access to which brands? It’s hard to see the reason to add more affiliations if I don't know what the benefit will be.

The more affiliations you add, the more brands you gain access to. Adding group affiliations associated with different types of activities give you the best chance to expand the brands you see on your feed. For example, if you work at Dave’s Climbing Gym and teach climbing at JoAnn’s Climbing Camp during the summer, both of those affiliations would probably get you similar access from our climbing brands. However, if you were to add that you are a scuba instructor, you’ll most likely gain access to new brands with diving products.

How does affiliation work if you part ways with a retailer?

Unfortunately, you’ll almost certainly lose access to some brands when you part with your retailer. However, those brands may not be gone forever. Update your group affiliations and you could regain access to some of the brands you lost.

We know things change and you may not stay with a retailer forever. This is why we advise experts to use their personal email address as their login. That way, if you do part ways with your retailer, you can still maintain access to your account and we can still communicate with you. For example: You sign up with an @REI.com email address but leave REI. We continue sending emails to your REI email, but you never receive them. But, if you signed up with an @gmail address, ExpertVoice can still communicate with you.

Don’t forget that some professions, regardless of where you work, are their own groups, like chefs, veterinarians, personal trainers, etc.

If a brand isn’t currently available to me, can I “apply” to get access to that brand?

You can’t apply directly to brands, but you should let us know by contacting our Expert Success Team. We have so many groups and professions that we work with that we may be able to help you find additional affiliations.

We also communicate our experts’ feedback with our brands regularly, so we’ll let them know. If the case is compelling, brands can and do make those changes (sometimes very quickly).

I’m still confused. Can I just talk to someone about all this?

Definitely. You can reach out to our Expert Success Team team via email, live chat or on the phone.

Each brand's order guidelines can be found when you enter their store; they are also sent as a link inthe email you should have received when your order was submitted. • How to make sure your expert advice stays authentic and FTC compliant.

As more people are being paid to share their opinion about products online, the FTC wants to make it clear when those endorsements (a.k.a. opinions, reviews, and recommendations) are made after a brand creates a material connection with the influencer who is sharing that endorsement.

While the FTC has published endorsement guidelines, they can be vague. We want to help you understand just what the FTC is looking for, so we have put together this quick guide to help make compliance as easy as possible.

    What is the FTC?

The FTC, or the Federal Trade Commission, is a government organization that exists to stop deceptive or fraudulent practices in advertising, and ensure fair competition in the marketplace. If you post to social media or own a blog where you share your opinions, chances are you’ve already heard about the FTC.

While this three-letter government organization may sound like the big bad wolf, it is actually working in your best interest, by verifying all those product recommendations you see online come with the information you need to make your best-informed decision when purchasing.

Being FTC compliant is not just up to the brands and marketers, though. It is also your responsibility as an Expert, no matter how large or small your online following is. And maintaining compliance means your opinion is that much more honest and believable therefore, more people will seek you out for expert advice.

Why Do I Need to Disclose My Endorsements?

Some people may think their online endorsements will go unnoticed by the FTC, however, the FTC is cracking down on endorsements that are missing a proper disclosure. They are constantly watching to verify influencer's relationships with brands are clearly and conspicuously disclosed.

Non-compliance can result in a written warning, state-level fraud, negligent misrepresentation, and unfair trade practices acts, as well as lawsuits.

Even an individual Expert like yourself could be the target of a lawsuit. Case in point, some of the lawsuits filed in the aftermath of the controversial Fyre Festival targeted celebrities like Kendall Jenner who made social media endorsements that weren’t FTC compliant.

To avoid that mess, make sure your endorsements are FTC compliant with these easy tips.

Disclosures Don’t Discredit Your Message:We know you want to engage with your followers, and slapping a huge “#advertisement” on a social or blog post can be scary. Your gut instinct may tell you that this glaring disclosure will make your followers less likely to read your message and may even lower the value of the content you work so hard to produce.

However, that’s not necessarily true. You’re an Expert, and people come to you for authentic, trustworthy advice. If you confidently announce that, yes, you did get to try out this product at a discount or even for free, you’re really only adding to the credibility of your message. Now your followers know you actually got to try the product out and you’re not just repeating marketing speak or the product description, which builds trust and keeps them coming back for more. Research backs this up a team from Georgetown recently conducted a study on how FTC disclosures affected how much followers trusted an influencer’s message, and results show that disclosing your relationship with a brand makes your message more trusted.

When Do I Have to Add a Disclosure?

The FTC states that disclosure is necessary when there is a “material connection” between an Expert and a brand in exchange for an endorsement made by the Expert.

That’s a bit vague, but a 2017 FTC press release clears it up a bit by adding that a material connection is “a connection that might affect the weight or credibility that consumers give the endorsement.”

Example: Material Connection.Let’s say you receive a discount from a brand in order to try out their product and provide your opinion on it. Because you received a discount a material connection has been made, and the FTC now requires a clear, conspicuous disclosure.

This also applies if you receive the product for free or are paid to provide your opinion or If you have a business or family relationship with that brand.

Does Number of Followers or Endorsement Frequency Matter?Whether you’re going on 100 or 10,000 followers doesn’t matter, a clear, conspicuous disclosure is required. At the same time, you still need to provide a disclosure even if you only share your opinion once or if you share it several times.

Recap: When is a Disclosure Necessary?Let’s recap: You need to give a disclosure when a material connection is made between you and the brand. Material connections can be:

    Monetary payment or discount

    A free product

A business or family relation between the Expert and your brand Affiliate links

The only time a disclosure is not necessary is when the material connection is already clear from the context of the endorsement.

What Counts as a Clear & Conspicuous Disclosure?

Here’s where it can get a little confusing: The FTC doesn’t require any specific language to be included in your disclosure. However, they do provide guidelines on what counts as “clear and conspicuous.”

Make disclosures hard to miss.Keep in mind that different social media platforms and websites may have restrictions that require disclosures to be made in a certain way.

As an example, the FTC specifically calls out Instagram. Because people who use the Instagram app can usually only see the first three lines of a longer post unless they click “more,” your disclosure must appear above the “more” button.

Avoid burying them.Another issue that can keep a disclosure from being clear and conspicuous is when it gets lost in a string of multiple hashtags, tags, or links. If you’re tagging multiple brands or people, adding a list of hashtags, or even including extra links in your post, make sure you separate the disclosure so it stands out.

Keep them unambiguous. Are you guilty of using any of the following disclosures: “#sp,” ‘Thanks [Brand],’ or ‘#partner?’”

The FTC says these types of disclosures aren’t “sufficiently clear,” which could cause you some trouble.

Your disclosure should leave no uncertainty for an everyday person. Examples of clear disclosures include “#advertisement,” “#ad,” and “This is a sponsored post that contains affiliate links.”

Recap: What Is Clear & Conspicuous?Make sure your disclosures are clear and conspicuous with the following checklist:

The disclosure stands out and is easily found, and isn’t hidden in a list of links, tags, or hashtags

Your followers don’t need to click “more” or another link to see the rest of the post and your disclosure

An average, everyday person can quickly and easily understand your disclosure

Follow Brand Guidelines. If you’re working with a brand to share your opinion, they may provide guidelines on what kind of language they want you to use and where it should be placed. Be sure to follow these guidelines when you post your endorsement, but if what the brand requests doesn’t seem clear and conspicuous enough you should follow the FTC guidelines first and foremost.

  • There are several reasons that you could be getting an error message when trying to check out.

If the error message is happening in the payment screen, make sure that your credit card number is listed without any spaces or dashes. Double-check to make sure that the billing address matches the one your credit card company has on file.

In the event that you are getting a declined error message, contact your financial institution to see if they have fraud protection on that card. If they do, please let them know that you submitted an order online that is being processed in the state of Utah and that you want it to go through. Your financial institution can then authorize the payment, and you can resubmit the order.

If you are getting an error message in the shopping cart, the brand may be updating their catalog. You can re-add the items to your shopping cart and proceed to checkout through the new catalog and your order will be submitted.

If you are receiving an expired key error, you can try to access ExpertVoice on a different browser, or clear your cache, cookies, and browsing history on your current browser and log back in. Clearing the cache, cookies, and browsing history will reset the security certificate your web browser issues.

  • If you no longer have access to a brand that you previously could view, it could be due to a couple possible scenarios.

Updated targeting. Our brand partners determine what experts they would like to target with their content and exclusive rewards. It is common for brands to change their target audience or only give access to a specific group or team position within a team. This could explain why you had access and no longer do, or why you do not have access when a colleague does. If you qualify for a different team that has access to the brand you can apply to that team.

Brand Cancellation. If a brand has terminated its relationship with ExpertVoice, its content and store will not longer be viewable to you.We apologize for any inconvenience. We are working hard to regularly bring additional brands on-board so check back with us and see which other great brands may be targeting you now.

Incorrect Login. If you have logged into the mobile app and aren't seeing brands you have access to on the desktop application, please ensure you have logged in with your correct email address (rather than signing in with a new account).

  • The way our payment processing is set up, the manufacturer does a pre-authorization when your order is placed and then captures the payment and voids that pre-authorization when the order ships. It is common for your financial institution to delay releasing the voided authorization on their end which causes the appearance of a double-charge. This is most likely the cause of the apparent double-charge on your account.

Please allow 5-7 days for the funds to be replaced in your account. If the funds don’t appear after that period, you may need to contact your bank to see their policy on holding voided authorizations.

In rare cases, a card will actually be charged twice for the same order due to an error in the order processing. In those situations, you should see the same charge posted (not pending or pre-authorization) twice for the same order number in your bank or credit card account. Please notify our Expert Support team so that we can look into that for you.

  • If you received a notification that a product was back in stock, but then discovered the product was still listed out of stock, the brand most likely only posted a limited inventory. Supplies are typically limited in these scenarios, and are available on a "first come, first serve" basis. There is a chance that someone got the item before you did.We would suggest putting in another out-of-stocknotification request.

  • Ultimately, our brand partners determine which affiliations they want to target through Expertvoice. It's common for brands to change their target audience or only give access to a specific group or position within an affiliation. This could explain why you had access and no longer do, or why you do not have access when a colleague does. If you qualify for a different affiliation that has access to the brand, you can apply to that affiliation. If you are unsure how to do this, please see our help page.

To ensure that you are receiving all the access for which your affiliation qualifies, please make sure you have fully completed your profile. Information such as date of birth and US shipping address are necessary to populate to gain access to the brands that are targeting you or that you want access to. Beyond that, adding the places you work and organizations you belong to is the fastest way to strengthen your Expert profile, and posting and tagging photos on the ExpertVoice app also helps showcase the type of Expert you are. • What Are Affiliations and Why Do I Need Them?

At ExpertVoice, we connect experts like you with some of the top brands in the world. Joining a group is the one of the best ways to help brands find you and reward you for your expertise.

Not yet. I have some more questions.

Your access to brands is determined by your group affiliations. If you want access to more brands, the best way to do that is by adding group affiliations that demonstrate your different areas of expertise. Clear as mud, right?: If you work at Petco and you've affiliated with the Petco Retail Employees group, you'll see mostly pet brands in your feed. But if you also love to go deer hunting in the winter, you should join the Hunting Experts group to see some of your favorite hunting brands in your feed, too.

ExpertVoice has 5,000+ groups that are organized by employment, certifications, organizations and clubs. Different types of groups include retailers like REI, Williams-Sonoma and PetSmart, as well as professional organizations, memberships and clubs like USA Cycling, Boy Scouts of America, Ski Patrol and Outdoor Guides & Outfitters.

Are you ready to join some groups and unlock those expert perks?

    Definitely. Let’s get started.

Engage with brands by viewing their latest content, updates, and taking their Edu-Games to demonstrate your expertise, as well as learn about their products.

Add affiliations based on where you work and what organizations you belong to.

Be sure to complete your profile by following the prompts listed on your profile page, including adding pictures to your profile and tagging the brands you care about, and whose products are featured within them. Brands notice Experts with sharp-looking profiles and will be more likely to engage on future campaigns.

Download the ExpertVoice App and upload your UGC to it, and tag any brands in it. The more you post and interact, the more brands take notice and will engage in response.

  • If a brand's content is not loading, there could be a couple reasons:

If the issue happens on a specific computer or network, then try using a different device to see if that resolves the issue.

Which Internet browser are you using? We often experience performance issues on outdated versions of Internet Explorer so you may need to either update your browser or switch to another browser like Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari.

If you've tried a different device and web browser and are still experiencing issues, please contact our Expert Support team so that we can troubleshoot the problem.
