James D. Gallagher — Executive VP & General Counsel at Manulife Financial Corp

Mr. James D. Gallagher, also known as Jim, serves as an Executive Vice President and General Counsel of The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company. Mr. Gallagher has been an Executive Vice President and General Counsel at Manulife Financial Corporation since December 20, 2016. Mr. Gallagher was Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer for the US Division. Mr. Gallagher served as the Chief Administrative Officer, Executive Vice President and General Counsel at John Hancock Financial Services Inc. He served as an Executive Vice President of Global Compliance at Manulife Financial Corporation since 2005 until August 1, 2012. He served as an Executive Vice President of Government, Public and Community Relations at John Hancock Financial Services Inc. He served as an Executive Vice President of Communications Government & Community Relations at John Hancock Financial Services Inc. Mr. Gallagher served as Global Compliance Chief and Senior Vice President at John Hancock Financial Services Inc. and also served as its Executive Vice President of Global Compliance. Before joining Manulife in Boston in 1994, he was Vice President and Associate General Counsel for the Canadian Operations of Prudential Insurance Company of America and also served as Assistant General Counsel with Prudential at its Newark, NJ, headquarters. He is the Chair of the Board of Trustees for Catholic Charities of Boston, was the founding President of One Fund Boston, serves on the Board of Directors and is the Co-chair of the Financial Services Committee for the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. He served as General Counsel to Manulife USA and was President of John Hancock Investment Trust. He graduated with a B.A in Political Science from St. Michael's College, University of Toronto and later earned a J.D from Ohio Northern University's College of Law.
