They hired two heads of content that were not needed (without a heads up that this was an open role); then fired those content heads and promoted me to director without any additional compensation

As an employee who was always praised for excelling in the engineering department and consistently gets at least above/exceeds expectations in previous performance reviews, I do not feel like the compensations were fair. At times I feel resentment for performing so hard for 2-3% annual raises.
