Executive Bio
Mr. Mark L. Heleen has been Chief Legal Officer, Executive Vice President and Secretary of Navient Corporation since February 2015. Mr. Heleen joined Navient in 2014 and was named general counsel in 2015. He served as an Executive Vice President of SLM Corporation since February 2009 and served as its General Counsel since December 2, 2008. He served as Senior Vice President of SLM Corporation from February 2008 to February 2009. He supported SLM Corporation's Corporate Finance department on financial transactions and oversees its legal work. He served as Vice President and Associate General Counsel of SLM Corporation from August 22, 2005 to February 2008 and also served as its Deputy General Counsel from February 2008 to December 2008, where he was responsible for all legal matters for the financing and derivative transactions of SLM, including its recent $3 billion equity offering, its $34 billion asset-backed commercial paper facility and its $2.5 billion unsecured senior notes issue. Mr. Heleen served with federal officials on SLM's implementation of the U.S. Department of Education's loan participation and purchase program. Mr. Heleen joined SLM Corporation in 1998. He served as an Attorney for PNC Bank from 1996 to 1998 and Tucker Arensberg, PC in Pittsburgh from 1988 to 1995. As a young lawyer with student loans to repay, he worked at a law firm that represented a bank and in 1995, he became the senior counsel for Pittsburgh National Bank. Following his departure from Sallie Mae in 2010, he worked as a consultant for several start-up student lenders and investment banks. He then accepted a position with the law firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, where he continued to work with student loan legal topics. He eventually applied the determination he developed in sports to his academics. He majored in political science and minored in Soviet studies. Mr. Heleen obtained his J.D. degree and foreign policy from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science from Bucknell University.
