Rachio's Frequently Asked Questions page is a central hub where its customers can always go to with their most common questions. These are the 262 most popular questions Rachio receives.
Rest Assured - Rachio has your back!
Most connectivity issues you might see are normal behavior; the Rachio controller's Wi-Fi features hinge on the reliability of:
Your internet service provider (ISP)
Your in-home router and/or access point.
However, unless the device goes offline for an extended period of time, you won't experience any loss in functionality your controller. In situations of more lengthy disconnects, we send out email and push notifications to letting you know your controller has been offline for 24 hours and needs to be power cycled (unplugged and plugged back in).
Tip
Is your controller offline? Our new in-app help tool makes Wi-Fi troubleshooting a breeze! Tap the red "Offline" banner at the top of the Home screen for automatic troubleshooting help. Follow the prompts in the app to identify what's wrong and how to quickly fix it. Need additional help? Check out this article to get back online!
On-Board Schedule Memory
If for some reason the Rachio doesn't reconnect to the Wi-Fi, the controller will continue to run the last schedule it saved until it can reconnect. The controller utilizes EEPROM (persistent memory), so the last saved schedule(s) are stored on the controller itself.
So please rest assured - if your Rachio controller loses connectivity with your Wi-Fi, it will always continue to water using the last saved schedule. Any updates/changes made to these watering schedules will automatically upload to the controller the next time it reconnects with the Rachio cloud (internet).
Note
If you are running Flex schedules, the Rachio controller will not run the last saved schedule, as they are dynamic.Instead, we will create a two week schedule based on the forecast for the upcoming two weeks. After the controller has been offline for that two week period, it will then revert to a Rachio-supplied default watering schedule until the controller gets back online. Then, we will send the controller a new schedule based off of your Flex Daily schedule selections.
Battery Backup
The controller does have a battery backup, but it's not used to maintain a schedule; instead, it's used to maintain an internal clock so that when the controller comes back online, it can resume running your schedules correctly, before syncing with the Rachio cloud.
Keeping track of waterings while offline
Even when your controller is offline, it will still continue recording watering events and keeping track of which zones are watered when (and with how much water). Each watering event will be cached on the controller and then combined with your watering history once the controller comes back online.
Note
If your controller comes back online after an extended period of time, the water usage displayed in your history may be much higher than expected. No need to be alarmed! This is because the controller aggregates all of the cached watering events and reports them at one time; your controller is still watering normally. Want to double check your water usage? You can view or download your historical usage.
Total Blackout?
Should you lose power to your home, the system will not run because there is no way to power the solenoid valves without electricity (24VAC). When power is restored to your home, the Rachio controller will automatically reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.
View ArticleYour Rachio Controller doesn't want to connect to Wi-Fi?
Lame, we know. Here are some tips to try if your Rachio controller doesn't want to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
Check the current status of your Wi-Fi network
The Rachio LED on your controller shows the current status of Wi-Fi connection. Use the light code to troubleshoot if you haven't already.
How do I update Wi-Fi on my controller? (Generation 2)
Troubleshooting Steps
Verify password
Be sure to enter your network password correctly including uppercase, lowercase, and any other special characters as the network credentials are case sensitive.Open networks (no Wi-Fi password) are not supported.
Verify with other devices
Verify with other devices (such as tablets or mobile phones) that your connection is good. Test by opening up a web browser and performing a Google search of any kind. If this fails, there may be a problem with your Wi-Fi network. You should contact your Internet service provider, network administrator, or the person who set up your network for assistance.
Update firmware
Update the firmware for your router or modem hardware if available. This can be accomplished by logging into your router and running a quick "Check for updates". Reference your router's manual for more information.
Diagnostic test
Run a Wi-Fi Network Diagnostic test. See Is my Wi-Fi Network compatible?
Check settings
Check your routersDNS settings to make sure they are up to date and functioning normally. Try using a different DNS if possible (Google public DNS is a good example: 8.8.8.8)
Previously connected?
If you recently changed your Wi-Fi password, you need to update your Wi-Fi connection on the Rachio controller to connect again. See
View ArticleAn Update On The Wireless Flow Meter
At Rachio, were incredibly proud of the three generations of Rachio controllers and accessories weve created, and are even more grateful for the dedicated customers weve earned along the way. Unfortunately, the variability in irrigation system configurations made for a more complicated Flow Meter installation process for some of our customerssomething that falls short of our mission. Because of this, weve decided to discontinue sales and production of the Wireless Flow Meter.
Were still here to help support and answer questions. Read on to learn more about what to expect moving forward.
How will you continue to support the WFM? Its business as usual. We will continue to release necessary software updates and firmware fixes, as well as help troubleshoot through our Help Center, Support Team, Community, and many Certified Rachio Pros. Does my warranty still apply? You bet! You can read more about our 2-Year Warranty here.Is my current WFM still working? Yes! There is no issue with the usage and accuracy of a properly installed Wireless Flow Meter. It still worksand will continue to work with the Rachio 3.Im on the waitlist Where can I get a WFM? Thank you so much for your dedication and patience. Many Certified Rachio Pros may still have stock. You may be able to get it through them while supplies last. To find a local Pro, click here.I havent installed my WFM yet, is it too late? Nope, its not too late to install your previously-purchased WFM! Reach out to your local Certified Rachio Pro for help with installation. I havent installed my WFM yet, can I return it? You can! We want to stress that the Wireless Flow Meter can still be installed and used with the Rachio 3. However, if youd prefer to return, were extending the original 30-day return policy. As a one-time courtesy, we are offering a final 30-day return window for unopened Wireless Flow Meters with proof of purchase (receipt, order number, etc.) You have until December 6, 2019 to return. To start this process, please email [email protected] with subject line WFM Return and your proof of purchase attached. Why are you discontinuing sale of this product? We realized that the variability in irrigation system configurations made for a more complicated Wireless Flow Meter installation process for some of our customers. This falls short of our mission to provide products that are easy to use and personally rewarding. What can I use instead of WFM? There are many wired flow meters on the market some of which are compatible with Rachio. However, support and troubleshooting of these devices should be handled through the manufacturer. Visit the Rachio Community for customer recommendations! Will you still support my currently installed WFM? For how long? You bet we will! We have no plans to discontinue support for the WFM. Do I need to remove my current flow meter from my system? Is there any risk to leaving it there? Nope, your installed WFM will continue to work and monitor for leaks! Keep it, use it, love it.
Why was the WFM out of stock for so long? We ended up selling through more flow meters than expected at the same time that we were moving our manufacturing and experienced delays in that transition, causing us to stock out. This did not affect our decision to discontinue production of the product.

Video Walkthrough
Check out our video below for step-by-step instructions on resetting the Wi-Fi on your Generation 1 controller.
Wi-Fi Reset Steps - Generation 1
From the More tab, selectController Settings
Click on Update Wi-Fi Network and click "Next". (Make sure that the unit is plugged in and the "Wi-Fi" light is blinking on the face of the Rachio.)
Much like your smartphone device, the Generation 1 Rachio will automatically find known networks. Make sure to select the appropriate (2.4 Ghz optimized) network and click Next. (If the network you are using does not show up, click on "Update Network" and the device will refresh with all known networks.)
After clicking Next you will be prompted to enter yournetwork password. Please note that the password is case sensitive and character sensitive. So if your password has any dashes (-) or any other special characters (examples:+, !, #, *) make sure to enter them.
Once you have entered in your password, click "Next". Where you will be brought to a page that explains the BlinkUp process. Make sure to read through the message to make sure you will be successful with your BlinkUp and click "Connect."
A couple things of note when blinking up:
Have the brightness turned all the way up on your device. It's best to turn off "Auto Brightness" in your phone's settings.
Have your device screen completely pressed up against the faceplate / photo-sensor with no gap.
Preferably be in a dark room with little, to no ambient light. Please note you can take the faceplate off and bring it into a darker room if need be.
Keep your smart device pushed flush with the face-plate for at least 15 seconds, preferably 20 seconds. This helps ensure that the controller connects, not only to your (local) Wi-Fi network but also to our server.
Make sure that the Wi-Fi light begins blinking green and you have successfully connected. If the lights don't eventually blink green please reference to see what color your blinking lights mean.

View ArticleWhat is vegetation type or zone type, and how is it used?
Vegetation type is used to help determine watering durations. Each vegetation or plant type has a different crop coefficient, which is used in determining evapotranspiration. The higher the coefficient number, the more water the plant uses.
Note
Good news - zone vegetation types now have an option for vegetable gardens!
Why do I need to enter my vegetation type for each zone?
Vegetation is used initially to determine watering minutes for your zones. Each vegetation or plant has a different crop coefficient, which is used in determining evapotranspiration. There may be several crop coefficients used for a single crop throughout an irrigation season depending on the crops stage of development. The higher the coefficient number, the more water the plant uses.
Vegetation types
To double check your vegetation selections, see the description for each vegetation type below:
Annuals
Coefficient: 0.80
Annual Plants go through an entire life cycle from seed to flower and back again to seed within a single growing season, All roots, stems, and leaves die on an annual basis. The dormant seed then will bring the plant back to life next season.
Cool Season Grass
Coefficient: 0.70
These grasses grow best when temperatures are between 65-80 degrees F, which is why they do most of their growing in the spring and fall. The most common grasses in this category are Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and fine fescue.
Warm Season Grass
Coefficient: 0.65
These grasses are originally from sub-tropical regions, which is why they thrive in the hot temperatures of the Southern US. The major grasses in this category are Bermuda grass, centipede grass, St. Augustine grass, bahia grass, and zoysia grass.
Perennial
Coefficient: 0.55
Perennial Plants generally live more than two years. The term is also widely used to distinguish plants with little or no woody growth. Common perennials include Forget-me-nots, Lavender, Alstroemeria, and Catmint.
Shrubs
Coefficient: 0.50
Shrubs are generally medium sized bushes that stay less than 20 inches tall. Examples include Azalea, Wintergreen, Hydrangea, Roses, Arborvitae, etc.
Trees
Coefficient: 0.75
This is a catch-all for trees that require significant watering. These could be fruit trees, palm trees, aspen trees, etc.
Xeriscape
Coefficient: 0.30
This is a catch-all for trees that do not require much water and tend to be very drought resistant.Examples includeEvergreens, Yucca, Bur Oak, Kentucky Coffee Trees.
Garden
Coefficient: 0.85
This is a general category for fruit and vegetable gardens. Plant examples include tomatoes, carrots, watermelon, beans, and other tasty vegetation.
Note
The "Garden" vegetation type works best in Fixed schedules

The following system types are not currently compatible with Rachio.
Battery Powered/DC Systems
2-Wire Systems
Most Commercial Systems with too many wires or zones.
Is it easy to wire up / install?
Rachio 3
The Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller has streamlined hardware for quick and easy installation. Our new easy-press connectors accommodate 14 & 18 gauge wire, making Rachio 3 installation a breeze compared to other controllers on the market. Most installations can be completed in 30 minutes or less, with no special tools or expertise required! The Rachio app provides guided installation every step of the way. Steps are easy replace your old controller, plug in existing wires, and complete setup within the free Rachio app.
Rachio Wireless Flow Meter
Professional installation is recommended for the Wireless Flow Meter; however, Rachio has made the process easier than ever before! Contact your local irrigation professional for assistance, or explore our installation guide for DIY suggestions and requirements.
Which controller should I buy?
The Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller is available in both 8 zone and 16 zone models. Both rely on the same free app and software that allows for unparalleled watering control. We recommend selecting the model that accommodates the number of zones in your yard (i.e. if you have less than 8 zones, select the 8 zone controller; if you have between 9 and 16 zones, opt for the 16 zone controller). If you have more than 16 zones, we recommend using two Rachio controllers to satisfy your zone count.
Do I need a rain / soil sensor?
Rachio 3 does not require any rain or soil sensors to take full advantage of smart watering. In fact, the Rachio controller acts as both soil and rain sensor by using our powerful software, numerous zone settings, and advanced weather forecasting to eliminate the need for external sensors (though you can certainly add one or both if you like!).
Is the Rachio 3 compatible with my other equipment? What about with my existing flow meter?
You will be able to wire any existing flow meter to Rachio 3. For a list of compatible equipment, see here.
Can the controller be used outside?
While the Rachio controller itself is not weatherproof, we offer an outdoor enclosure to mount your controller outside. The outdoor enclosure is fully weatherproof and can withstand temperatures between -4F and 140F. All mounting hardware is included in the enclosure box, which can be purchased along with your Rachio 3 Smart Water System from Rachio.com. Already have a Gen 2 outdoor enclosure? You can use it with your Rachio 3!
Can I control Rachio 3 from the unit?
Yes! Rachio 3 includes on-unit buttons to Run, Pause, and Skip your watering. You can also control and monitor your watering from the Rachio app on any mobile device, or the Rachio web app from any computer.
Did you know?
Your old Gen 2 outdoor enclosure is compatible with Rachio 3! Use this enclosure to mount and weatherproof your controller outdoors, or purchase a new enclosure here.
Wi-Fi / Connectivity
Can you hardwire the Rachio 3 for internet?
Rachio 3 relies on Wi-Fi (2.4 or 5 GHz) and cannot be hardwired. Wi-Fi allows for the greatest coverage and mounting options without the hassle of running wire. If you lose signal for any reason, your Rachio 3 will continue to water. We recommend double checking your signal strength using your phone in the location you will be mounting Rachio prior to purchase.
What happens if I lose power?
All of our controllers have built-in memory and a small battery to save the time. So once your home regains power, it will pick up right where it left off.
What happens if I lose Wi-Fi connection?
If you temporarily lose internet connectivity, your Rachio controller will attempt to reconnect to your network every 30 seconds for 24 hours, after which point your controller will go offline. If this happens, you will need to manually unplug your Rachio and plug it back in (you may also need to do this with your router). Each controller has a small amount of built-in memory so that any schedules or settings you had before connection loss will be saved. Your controller will continue to run those schedules indefinitely until it can reconnect (and update, if needed). Sodon'tfear - your lawnwon'tbe without water if you lose internet!

Please proceed with CAUTION
Select users may experience issues with the following firewall and security settings. However, a simple 2.4 ghz guest network with default settings should allow for a steady connection in most cases.
Before proceeding, please ensure that you read & understand all steps in article: BasicWi-FiTroubleshooting
If you are familiar with your network / router settings, please continue, but be aware...
The following tips are for ADVANCED USERS
1) The Rachio controller will need to make a connection through the following ports (Outbound Traffic):
Device / Service
Port
Generation1
53,31314
Generation 2
53, 8883, 123
Firmware updates
80
Make sure these are not blocked.
CAUTION: The aboveports are only for outgoing traffic from the unit to the internet. Please DO NOT use port forwarding on your router to forward traffic from the internet to the unit; doing so may cause a vulnerability in your home network security.
2) Make sure that MAC address filtering on your router is disabled. If you prefer to keep your MAC address filtering on, you will need to add the controller's MAC address to your router's access control list. Your MAC address can be found:
In your Rachio App, under Device Settings
On the sticker on the front of the controller, just under the serial number (forGen2 only)
3) You may need to reserve an IP address for the Rachio controller and/or increase the lease time on your DHCP.
Reserving an IP address for your controller will ensure that every time the controller requests an IP address from your router, it will receive thesameaddress. Increasing the lease time will enable your controller to have an IP address for a longer period of time without having to request a new one.
Search for your specific route to find detailed instructions on how to accomplish the steps above:

What is Rachio's Seasonal Shift Weather Intelligence feature?
Put simply, as the months get hotter over the spring and summer, Seasonal Shift will increase a schedule's zone durations to make sure your yard gets the correct amount of water. Conversely, as the months get cooler, on average in late summer and fall, Seasonal Shift will decrease the zone's durations. Think of it as your scheduling Auto Pilot.
Note
Seasonal Shift is not available on Flexible Monthly and Flex Daily schedules because these schedules automatically adjust watering to achieve a result similar to Seasonal Shift.
FAQ's
How does Seasonal Shift work?
When Seasonal Shift is enabled, at the beginning of every month, your schedule will adjust its watering durations by referencing 30 years of historical weather Almanac data in your area.In general, watering times will be longer in the warmer months and shorter in cooler months.

Are you a visual learner? This short one-minute video will walk you through Rachio's Weather Intelligence features, including Seasonal Shift, and will provide some guidance on how to use them.
What if I change durations for a zone?
If you manually change a watering duration for a zone in the current month, your entire schedule going forward will update with the appropriate seasonal offset. In other words, Seasonal Shift will change your durations using your new duration time as a baseline.
What if I disable a schedule that uses Seasonal Shift?
Seasonal Shift will continue to function on all schedules where it is enabled, regardless of whether the schedule itself is enabled or disabled.
Additionally, adjustments will be applied to all zones within such a schedule, regardless of the zone or schedule status (enabled/disabled). This is because the server-side copy of your schedules is being updated constantly for your benefit, and then pushed down to your controller. This helps keep your Rachio up-to-date and ready to go the moment you decide to re-enable any of your schedules.
To disable Seasonal Shift on a Fixed Schedule, find the navigation bar at the bottom of the app and select "Schedule". Next, select the Fixed Schedule you would like to edit and scroll down to "Weather Intelligence." After selecting, simply uncheck the box marked "Seasonal Shift."

Has your Rachio gone offline unexpectedly? Don't worry, most of time it will reconnect on its own. In the event it doesn't automatically reconnect, please follow the guidelines below.
Troubleshooting Tip
Controller offline? Having issues with Wi-Fi on your controller? Our new in-app help tool makes Wi-Fi troubleshooting a breeze! Tap the red "Offline" banner at the top of the Home screen for automatic troubleshooting help. Follow the prompts in the app to identify what's wrong and how to quickly fix it.
Note
While offline for long periods, your controller will run the last saved schedule created in the Rachio app. Any updates/changes to these watering schedules will upload to the controller the next time it reconnects with the cloud. However, while the controller is offline, it cannot receive schedule updates, skip watering times due to rain or freeze delays, or be run manually.
For more details on backup schedules, please refer to our support article: Whatifmycontrollergoesoffline?
How can I tell if my Rachio has intermittent connectivity?
You can tell if your controller is experiencing connectivity problems if your device displays "Offline" when you log in to the Web or Mobile apps. For quick troubleshooting help, tap the red "Offline" banner to access our in-app Wi-Fi help tool.
BasicWi-FiTroubleshooting
If the connectivity issues happen often, or if your controller is ever offline for 24 hours or more, you can view this in the History feed by tapping the "History" tab.
In instances where you see numerous Wi-Fi disconnects/reconnects in a short time frame, it's likely related to your Rachio's signal strength. It might be helpful to try repositioning the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot or access point a foot or two if you have a mesh network (Eero, Orbi, Google Wi-Fi, Ubiquiti Amplifi, etc). If you have just one Wi-Fi router, see below for more details on extending your Wi-Fi range.

What if my controller goes offline, but only while it's watering?
If the controller goes offline during a scheduled run, there may be an issue with the wiring or the irrigation system itself.
When zone faults occur, it is often because the controller receives too much electricity from the irrigation system, causing the controller to shut down. To fix a zone fault, start by looking at which zone was last run.
If you have a Generation 2 Rachio, you may see a notification within the app that says Zone Fault Detected with a specific zone called out.
The Generation 1 Rachio may require some light "detective work" for this first step. Check out this article for more Generation 1 Offline Troubleshooting tips.

How can I fix intermittent Wi-Fi connectivity?
There are many factors that might cause your controller to be offline occasionally. Before spending the time troubleshooting your home network, you should verify that one of these more common issuesisn'tcausing the problem:
Connection to the Internet at your home is down.
Power failure at home.
Problem with your Wi-Fi router.

Simple Wi-Fi Checks
Steps to ensure your Rachio is getting reliableWi-Fi
Try restarting your routerThe best first step in troubleshooting these types of issues is to try restarting your router. While most routers just need to be unplugged and plugged back in to restart them, we recommend referring to your routers documentation for specific instructions. Once your router finishes restarting, test it by connecting to your Wi-Fi network with a computer or mobile device and visiting a popular website.
Check the controller's signal strengthStill experiencing intermittent connectivity problems after restarting your Wi-Fi router? You'll want to check the Wi-Fi signal strength at the location of your controller. To test the signal strength using your smartphone, simply walk to the location of your controller and see how many bars your network connectivity has. We recommend at least 2 bars for the signal strength to be considered reliable.
Confirm your Wi-Fi credentials are correct and perform Wi-Fi resetIf your Wi-Fi credentials (name/SSID/password) have changed, or you've set up a new router, we recommend performing a Wi-Fi Reset - go here for instructions.
Extend your Wi-Fi RangeIf you have a weak signal at your controller, you may want to consider purchasing a Wi-Fi extender. If your controller is located far away from your router and/or there are materials that may interfere with the signal strength, an extender can make a big difference. This will enhance the range of the router and can potentially increase the coverage.

Quick Overview
Wired Flow Sensors
While we recommend using the Rachio Wireless Flow Meter to complete your Rachio 3 Smart Water System, the Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller is compatible with many wired flow sensors. For a complete list of supported flow sensors, check out this article.
Rain Sensors
In most installations, a rain sensor acts as a switch; as moisture-absorbing disks expand, they activate a switch that interrupts the circuit from the controller to the solenoid valves. Once the rain sensor has dried out, the switch deactivates to allow for normal operation.
The Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller is compatible with any wired or wireless normally closed (NC) rain sensor, which activates after rainfall (when the moisture-absorbing disks expand). For more information, see Rain Sensors FAQ.
Wire it Up
Before installing your sensor, take a few moments to read through these instructions in their entirety. The sensor can ONLY connect to the following terminals on your Rachio 3:
Sensor ( S1, S2 ) terminals - use S1 or S2 for a single sensor, NOT both
Sensor common ( 24 VAC - ) terminal. This corresponds to the SC terminal on the Generation 2
Sensor power ( 24 VAC + ) terminal - for wireless (powered) rain sensors. This corresponds to the SP terminal on the Generation 2. Hire a Pro
Caution!
Do NOT connect the sensor to any of the zones.
Installation methods must comply with all applicable national and local electrical codes. If you are unsure about proper wiring practices, have a qualified contractor perform the installation for you.
How to Connect Sensor Wiring
Power off
Disconnect power to the controller.
Locate terminals
Locate the sensor terminals(S1, S2, 24 VAC +/-) on your controller and attach the sensor control wires directly to these terminals (in any order).
Power on
Reconnect power to the Rachio controller.
Enable sensor
Enable the sensor in the Rachio App Controller Settings
Note
Avoid routing the wire over any sharp edges where damage to the wire insulation may occur. For best results, hide the wire as much as possible by tucking it under shingles and/or moldings. Seal any holes made by passing the wire through structure walls.
Also, either terminal "S1" or "S2" can additionally be used for a second sensor. Configuration in the app allows you to assign a rain sensor or flow sensor to either terminal.

The Rachio Generation 1 controller is not waterproof. If your location calls for outdoor installation, we require the use of a waterproof enclosure. You can order the Rachio recommended enclosure on Amazon.
Do NOT directly hard wire your Gen1 controller. Hardwiring the Rachio will void your warranty.
Rachio recommended enclosure specs:
Also, it's important to make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi signal at the controller's location. If you have a smartphone handy, set it onto your home network and see how many bars you have at that outdoor location. We recommend at least 2 bars for consistent operation.
Below is adetailed step-by-step process on how to install a Rachio Generation 1 outdoors using the enclosure listed above. Please note that your installation and site conditions might be different, so this is only intended as an overview of the parts included; possible additional parts/tools may be needed as well as advice/suggestions on best practices.

Note that some additionalparts/tools may be necessary for outdoor installation.
Wire Cutter/Stripper
Waterproof Wire Nuts
PVC Pipe (You will want to buy the correct size, so make sure you know what that is)
PVC Cutter (Or any sort of saw that could cut through PVC pipe)
PVC Pipe Hub &Trap Adapter
Sprinkler Wire (18/5) /( 18/7 ) (If you believe your wire will not be able to reach the box & the controller, you may need more. Make sure it matches the count of your current set up.)
Industrial Strength Velcro Strips (The enclosure comes with Velcro so this may not be necessary)
The images below show all of the parts of the outdoor enclosure. Each one is explained individually.
Bottom of Rachio enclosure. There are three openings for all of the wires to enter; zone wire(s), common wire(s), master valve/pump wire, ground wire, rain sensor wires, ACpower wires and any additional wires.
Inside the Rachio enclosure. The AC Panel Coveris where theAC power wires and ground wirewill be connected and where the power adapter to the unit will be plugged in. This process will be outlined more in depth later. There is also three holes for screws to mount to the wall. Additionally, there are two black fabric fasteners to Velcro the Rachio to the enclosure.
Enclosure with AC Panel Cover removed.
AC Panel Cover. You will have to remove this cover to connect the necessary wires to it and tothread the other wires to the Rachio.
Bottom part of AC Panel Cover. There are two plastic coverings that are attached with small screws. These plastic coverings are not necessary to have so it is up to you to put them on once you have wired everything. There is a Caution Warning regarding electrocution so be advised.
AC Panel Cover with the plastic covering removed.
The slots in outlet terminalwill be explained later, but the wires to power the unit and the ground wire are connected to the outlet terminal, shown below.
1) Begin by removing the old controller. Be sure to take a picture of the wiring, or number the wires. You will want to make sure you know what wire goes to which terminal in your controller.
2) Disconnect all of the wires from the old controller. In the image above we removed Stations 1-5, green ground wire (bottom middle), and the two orange 24VAC wires (top). Once these were all out, we removed the three screws that were attaching the controller to the wall. (Two screwdrivers from the top and one from the bottom.)
3) Make sure to thread all of the wires out of the old controller and remove it. The image above is what our wires looked like after removing the controller. Note that we removed the PVC pipe from the left side, to make sure that we would be able to feed in all of the wires from an even level. (This may require some planning.PVP pipe may need to be cut and measured to enable the wires to feed into the three holes at the bottom of the enclosure.)
We added some PVP pipe to the left side and added an adapterthat we feed through two of the holes in the enclosure. The brown housing unit on the right side has our ACpower wires and ground wire enclosed.
4) Next we feed the zone wires through the left hole in the bottom of the enclosure, and feed the brown housing connector through the right hole. (Note: We removed the rubber barriers from the bottom holes that wayit was easier to feed the connectors through.) One we feed the adapters through, we screwed an adapter nut to hold these adapters in place. This also completely solidified that everything was waterproof.Screw the enclosure into your wall using the three holes provided. Two are directly above the black fabric fastener, and one is centered below the black fabric fastener.
5) We cut the zone and common wires down to make sure there was not too much slack. This can be done with a wire cutter. Once we did this we stripped the plastic off of each wire to make sure we would have a good connection once we inserted them into each terminal slot on the controller. (Note: We advise stripping about a half inch of plastic off, this will provide enough wire.)
6) We then took the Velcro that comes with the enclosure and connected it to the back of the Rachio. We advise attaching the Velcro asdisplayed below. This will attach the unit securely.
We suggest attachingthe unit to the far left side of the black fabric fastener, that way there is room to put extra wire and the power adapter cord to the right of the Rachio.
7) Next we inserted each wire (zones and common), into their appropriate terminal slot. We used a small screwdriver to push down the tab above each slot to make it easier to get the wire fully inserted. (Note: Zone 1 is the bottomleft green slotand each slot moves sequentially upuntil Zone 8, Common andMaster Valve/Pump. If you have a 16 zone Rachio controller, zones 9-16 move from top left to bottom right on the right side of the unit.)
8) Next we had to add some additional wires to our AC power wires and our ground wire to make sure we we able to connect them to the outlet terminal on the AC Panel Cover. We simply cut three equal length wires and attached them to their corresponding wire (based on the color), using waterproof wire nuts. (If you need to buy extra wire we advise buying the same colors as the wires that you will need to extend to avoid any confusion.)
After the wires were connected we closed the brown housing unit.
9) Next we attached the two AC power wires and the green ground wire to the outlet terminal on the AC Panel Cover. Please note the following:
There will be two black sections with four inserts each.
One of the black sections will have White inscribed. This is the neutral insert, so in our scenariothe white wire is placedin the upper right insert. (Neutral wires are typically white)
The other black section will be blank. This is the "hot" insert, so in our scenario theblack wire is placed in theupper right insert. (Note that your "hot" wire may be a different color. Typically they are red or black.)
The green wire will be wrapped around the green screw, ground, and the screw will be tightened. The green wire may need to have some extra plastic stripped off to make sure that only the copper is wrapped around the screw. This can be a little tricky.
10) Attach the AC Panel Cover to the enclosure. (Note: We removed both plastic coverings from the back of the AC Panel Cover to allow for more room for the wires.
11) Plug in the power adapter to the outletand attach the front panel of the Rachio to the wall mount.
12) Plug in the power adapter into the small hole on the right side of the front panel. If the wiring to the outlet terminal worked properly the Power status light will illuminate green. (The power adapter cord will have a lot of slack so wrap it up with the twisty tie and place the wire in the best spot.)
From here the only remaining steps are to register your Generation 1 controller to your Rachio App.
If you'd like to source your own enclosure, thedimensionsof the Generation 1 Rachio are: 7.25"H x 7.25" W x 2.075"D, not including the transformer.
Alternatively, you can also use the Orbit enclosure, available at Home Depot. Please see for more details.

What happens if I lose power?
Our Rachio controllers have memory built into them and a small battery to save the time. So once your home regains power, it will pick up right where it left off. No need to worry about it starting at an inappropriate time or not remembering to water your landscape.
What happens if I lose Wi-Fi?
If for some reason you temporarily lose internet connectivity, your Rachio controller will attempt to reconnect to your homes network every 30 seconds for 24 hours, at which point it will go offline. If this happens, you will need to then manually unplug your Rachio and plug it back in. You may also need to do the same to your router. Each controller has a small amount of built-in memory that will save any schedules or settings you had before the connection was lost, and will continue to run those schedules indefinitely until it can reconnect and update if needed. This way, your lawnwon'tbe without water if you lose internet for any reason!
What's the minimum internet speed I need?
We send as much as 5kB (an average email is about 75kB) of data per request. We use MQTT requests to send packets of information between your phone, Rachio controller, and our servers. In short, we use very little data. Better still, we require only a stable internet connection (the speed doesnt matter much.)
Can you hardwire the Rachio for internet?
Currently, Rachio smart controllers are Wi-Fi enabled only. With most homes switching to wireless networks, and most controllers mounted outside or in a garage, we opted to go with the current trend. This allows for the greatest coverage and mounting options without having to run wire. The good news is, if you lose signal for any reason, it will continue to water, and unless theres an unstable/intermittent connection over wireless, you shouldnt have any problems. We recommend double checking your signal strength using your phone in the location you will be mounting Rachio, prior to purchase. While connected to your homes wireless network, you should see 2 bars or more for a solid signal.
How safe is my Rachio controller from mischievous users on the internet?
In this day and age, security is on the forefront of everyones mind. Thats why we adhere to a strict set of requirements to keep you safe with Rachio. We require strong and unique passwords for device accounts and Wi-Fi networks. We specifically force you to do this by setting a minimum 8 character and complex password requirements to protect you from these situations.
We make it mandatory to use a strong encryption method when setting up Wi-Fi network access. Again, we require you use WPA/WPA2 encryption. As a matter of fact, our system won't recognize anything less. WPA(2) is the most current and secure form of wireless encryption.
We also do not run our own private servers, we run directly off Amazon Web Services (AWS) which are some of the best in the world.
In our specific case, we push out to all of our users at the same time, any new firmware the day of its release. No waiting around. No hassles of having to manually search yourself.
Our passwords are salted and hashed but it's our policy not to relay confidential information regarding most of the internal aspects of our system (database, penetration testing, vulnerabilities, etc.)
We do not store any data in our system related to credit cards, birth dates, social security, etc. regarding customers (PCI data).
We use Stripe and Amazon as our third party vendors for payment processing.
Hardware/Wiring
Which controller should I buy?
We offer an 8 zone and a 16 zone controller. Each offer the exact same experience, as our free app and software updates will allow you to have the same fun on either. The only difference will be the number of zone terminals on the physical unit. So we recommend you choose the model that accommodates the number of zones you have best.
Can I run my zones from the controller itself?
Yes! Our Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller Generation 2 controller has several physical buttons on the face of the unit. This will allow you to move up and down through your zones to select which you would like to run, and then a button to manually run the zone, for a maximum of 3 minutes each.
Does Rachio work with other sprinkler systems?
As long as your current sprinkler system utilizes AC (alternating current) solenoids. If you have an older DC (direct current or battery powered) solenoid anywhere in your system, youll need to do a quick replacement. https://support.rachio.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010540488-Rachio-compatibility-with-DC-Solenoids
Can I tie in two zone wires into one terminal?
You can take two zone wires and twist them together into one terminal. There are a few points to consider when doing so, though. We support a max of three valves on one zone terminal for adequate power. This will include a master valve, so if you have one, note that you can have only two additional valves in one terminal. Also, the Rachio will not differentiate between two different zones in one terminal in the software. In short, youll want to make sure that the two zone wires you tie together, lead to zones that have similar, if not identical, needs (vegetation type, soil type, sun exposure, incline). This way, when those zones are supplied with power and watered, youwon'tneed to worry about one getting too much or too little and killing your lawn, because they will run for the same amount of time.
Do we have a controller that can handle more than 16 zones?
At this point in time, we offer an 8 zone and a 16 zone model only. If you have more than 16 zones, we recommend using two Rachio controllers to satisfy your zone count. Both devices would be connected through the app on your phone, so no need to navigate multiple sources to play modify them. Please note, two controllers act independently of each other and will not communicate to each other, so they will need to be operated as different controllers. In the meantime, here are a couple ways to avoid any sort of collisions with schedules on two different controllers:
Try scheduling the separate controllers on different days. This can be done in both automatic and manual modes.
If you live in an area with restrictions, try scheduling one controller late in the evening and the other one early in the morning.
Do I need a rain/soil sensor?
We do not require a rain or soil sensor to use Rachio to its fullest and keep your lawn healthy and green. Some of our users live in microclimates where the nearest weather station might be too far to get an accurate forecast for your home. Or you may live on an island that has different weather patterns, etc. These are great instances where we might recommend a rain sensor attached to your Rachio. The good news is, for the majority of users, our powerful software accounts for numerous zone settings in conjunction with weather reporting/forecasting, to keep you from needing rain and soil sensors. Though, you can certainly add one or both!
Can you replace my current controller/will you work with my rain sensor?
In most instances, Rachio will quickly and seamlessly replace your current irrigation controller. Simply, as long as you have a 24VAC irrigation system, our controller should replace it with little effort. The Rachio hardware is much like any standard controller, in that it turns zones on and off by supplying a particular zone with power, or taking it away. There are occasions where a rain sensorwon'twork with Rachio because its a proprietary model that works exclusively with one brand/model of controller. To see a list of well-known compatible rain sensors and how to install them with your Rachio, check out the article below. https://support.rachio.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010542628-Rain-Sensors-FAQ
Can the controller be used outside?
While the Rachio controller itself is not weatherproof, we offer a Rachio outdoor enclosure you can use to mount your controller outside. Its fully weatherproof and can withstands temperatures in the range of -31F to 140F. All mounting hardware is included in the enclosure box.
Is it easy to wire up/install?
Typical installation for a Rachio user with little to no experience is about 30 minutes or less. We recommend preparing beforehand for the best experience. Decide where you want to mount it, if you need additional wiring to move it elsewhere, grab yourself a screwdriver and a pencil, and take a picture or two of your current wiring to reference in case you forget which wire goes where. If youre really good, it can take as little as 10 minutes, butdon'trush, its a sight to see when done correctly.
What happens if I move, how do the new homeowners use it?
Good question and easy answer. If you sell your home that has a Rachio controller installed, all the new homeowner needs to do is download the free Rachio app. While working with a Rachio agent to verify your ownership over the phone, online, or email, we can help quickly transfer the controller over to their account in as little as a few minutes. This applies to the Rachio Sprinkler Controller, Generation 2 models currently. If you happen to move into a new house and do not have a way to communicate with the old owner, we can help remove or transfer the controller over to your account as well!
App
Is the app easy to use?
Well let the reviews speak for themselves, but were constantly working closely with our users and pros to push the limits and make managing your lawn a no brainer. Check some out at www.rachio.com/reviews.
Does Rachio know if one of my heads breaks, if there's a leak, or a valve doesn't close?
Currently, we have the ability to recognize zone faults, which is a way of knowing if a zone is experiencing electrical concerns due to a wiring issue. We are working to bring our Rachio users the ability to detect and be notified when we sense a break in your line, a broken head, or a leak.
What will happen if I switch cell phone or internet service providers?
No need to worry! All of your information is backed up, updated, and saved on our Amazon cloud servers. This means, even if you delete the app or buy a new phone, once you re-download the app or go online and login, all your settings are still there waiting for you. If you change internet providers or purchase a new router, you can perform a quick Wifi Update from within the app. This is similar logging into your Wifi again on a computer.
Are there any extra charges?
None at all. The only thing you put in is the price of the controller or enclosure itself. For some, there are even full rebates available, so be sure to check if there are some for you with your water utility. There are no monthly or annual subscriptions, the app is free to download anytime, and all software and firmware updates are automatically updated for you for the life of the product!
Are there frequent updates and how do we get them?
Updates to both our hardware and our app are pushed out to you as we come out with something new. This can be the day after a large bug is identified, to several months depending on the need. We stay very involved in our software, as its our specialty and basis for the smarts behind the Rachio controller.
Do you work with Apple HomeKit?
Apple HomeKitis only compatible with our Rachio 3 controller. To learn more, please check out this support article or join the conversation on our community.
Can the controller be shared to other accounts?
You can absolutely share your Rachio controller to another user. If you are a homeowner and would like to share access to your irrigation specialist or a family member, you can do so from within the app without giving them your login information. They have their own free account, and you have your own. Same goes for pros. If youd like to have more complete ownership of the controller and share to the homeowner or to another employee on your team, this is well within the limits of our capabilities. To learn more, check out this article on the sharing options we have: https://support.rachio.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010541868-How-do-I-share-my-controller-with-someone-
Can I have more than one controller on the same account?
You can not only have more than one controller on your account, you can have an unlimited number! This is great for irrigation pros with large numbers of clients. Add the controller to the account as you would any other, and then choose the controller from a list from within your app to modify, run, or delete a controller as needed. https://support.rachio.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010378487-How-do-I-add-another-controller-to-my-account-
Do you adjust automatically based on weather forecasts?
Your Rachio controller will adjust not only when it waters, but how it waters, based on what the connected weather station has seen, as well as what it predicts. Depending on your schedule type, it will utilize different Weather Intelligence features in relation to the weather station forecasts, to skip a watering, or push the schedule out to a date in the future when your yard will need it.
Does Rachio have the ability to do a pump delay?
Rachio does not currently have the ability to program a pump delay. Many of our users find it best to set up an individual schedule for each zone in order to facilitate the need. This will allow for the pump to rest as long as youd like depending on when you would like the next zone to run.
Can I use two Rachios at the same time?
You may have an unlimited number of Rachio controllers under your one account, but to run two at the same time may take further explanation. While you can have more than one on your property, to run them simultaneously may interfere with your water pressure. If you have one master valve, it will require some advanced wiring to share it between the two. https://support.rachio.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010542808-How-do-I-wire-one-master-valve-or-pump-to-two-controllers- Its important to note that Rachio units cannot communicate between each other and will need to be operated as different controllers from within the app. We generally recommend having one controller run certain zones on odd days, and the other run on even days to help keep them from overlapping schedules or zone waterings.
Can you use multiple weather stations at the same time and average their data?
Rachio users will have the luxury of choosing between any number of available, nearby personal or national weather stations. Only one weather station can be used at one a time, but users can switch as much as theyd like. We work hand-in-hand with Aeris to report any issues with a station in order to get it resolved as quickly as possible.
Do you allow for watering restrictions in my area?
Absolutely! Working with water utilities and municipalities around the United States, as well as professional irrigation specialists, we understand just how important it is to work with them to better understand the need for restrictions in place. Therefore, we have added in features to allow Rachio users to plug in which days or patterns they are restricted to, and its as simple as choosing the option within the app!
How do Flex schedules work?
Flex schedules are our smart schedules, andthey'recool! They leverage weather data from the connected weather station by looking at the past and future forecasts, and automatically adjusting your watering on the fly on a zone by zone basis. They can see what weatheryou'vereceived in the last 24 hours, whats to come in the next 24 hours, and push a watering to a later date if the soil moisture content is above a user specified level. In short, they keep an eye on the weather and whats in your soil to determine when to run, without you having to lift a finger. Have watering restrictions? Flex schedules allow for those as well! https://support.rachio.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010541708-Flexible-Daily-Schedules-FAQ
Support/Other
What happens if I purchase your current controller now, and the next generation comes out in a few months?
No need to fret! No matter what piece of Rachio hardware you have, you will enjoy the same user experience. The software remains the same across all platforms, so the only thing that will change, is the controller itself.
Can I call someone immediately if there's an emergency?
We have several forms of direct communications. Depending on the season were currently in, our hours for may be extended. If you are a professional installer, you have a dedicated call line for emergencies. Any Rachio user can also email us 24/7 or chat with us immediately on our website during normal business hours. Refer to our contact page for more details, or within your app: https://support.rachio.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010380167-Contact-Support
Do you have any rebates/where can I find rebates?
There are tons of rebates through regional municipalities and water utilities offered around the United States. To search if there are any in your area, visit www.rachio.com/rb and enter your zip code. There are generally several other promotions that you may be eligible for, so keep an ear and eye out on www.rachio.com or in your mailbox!
How did you name your company?
Rachio is latin for spine or backbone. Much like the backbone in your body, the Rachio controller supports your irrigation system and sends electrical signals back and forth between your sprinkler heads and the brains (software) in the cloud. Together, they are the central nervous system of your entire landscape.
Do you ship/sell internationally?
We currently sell in the United States and Canada via Amazon, Rachio.com, Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy, and Woot. Any international Rachio lovers have found their controllers through their regional Amazon dealer or through Amazon.com (US) and shipped overseas. View ArticleWhat is soil type and why is it important?
Understanding your lawn's general soil type is helpful when creating watering schedules to minimize runoff. Additionally, estimating the depth of the roots helps to understand the size of the soil moisture reservoir (or the"water tank" in which the Rachio controller can refill). Each zone can have a different sized water tank based upon the soil in that zone and what's growing in the zone.
What is the "water tank"?
The earths soil serves as water storage for vegetation. If you think of this storage as being similar to a sponge, it helps illustrate why soil type is an important factor in Rachios scheduling decisions, in particular Flex Daily and Smart Cycle features.
A Simple Illustration
How do I set up my zones? Step 3
Water & soil in action!
Similar to soil, a sponge can be too wet or too dry to use:
When a sponge is "soaking wet" is itoversaturated and cannotabsorb any additional water.
When a sponge is "moist" it's perfect and works as expected.
When a sponge is "dry", it becomes difficult to use and sometimes has trouble absorbing water.
In the case of your yard, soil can be too wet or too dry. Managing soil moisture is the key to a healthy yard.
When your soil is too wet, it becomes Saturated and cannot absorb any additional water. Runoff is common when soil is saturated.
When your soil is moist, it is at Field Capacity and has just the right amount of water and air, which creates the perfect growing conditions for plants.
When your soil is too dry, plants become stressed. If the soil becomes too dry and approaches Permanent Wilting Point, plant cells rupture and the plant will die.
For Rachio to properly calculate the size of the water tank for each zone, you must enter the proper soil type and vegetation type for each zone.
Soil Texture
Sand, Silt, and Clay
Texturerefers to the size of the particles that make up the soil. The termssand, silt, and clay refer to relative sizes of the soil particles.
Sand, made up of larger particles, feels gritty.
Silt, made up of moderately sized, has a smooth or floury texture.
Clay, made up of smaller particles, feels sticky.
Soil Types
As mentioned earlier, there are three basic soil classes identified by Rachio; Clay, Sand, and Loam:
Clay soil is generally heavy and is compact in nature. Plants have a harder time developing roots in clay soil. Clay soil tends to retain water, but this is not always desirable. A clay or heavy clay soil, will greatly benefit from the addition of organic material, and its almost impossible to add too much.
Sandy soils are the opposite of clay and generally drain too fast, and so are unable to hold onto any nutrients long enough for a plant to use them. Organic matter helps to hold onto water and nutrients, and as with clay, its almost impossible to add too much.
Loamy soil is a rich, dark and crumbly soil that will allow drainage, but still retain enough moisture to be beneficial. Loam is a good balance of sand, clay, silt and organic matter. If you grab a handful of loamy soil, it should not form a compact ball. It should remain loose and crumbly. Loam is the best type of soil for growing almost everything!
There is a wide spectrum of soil types in the United States, as illustrated below.
Soil Infiltration & Scheduling
The type of soil helps Rachio to understand how quickly the soil will absorb water. If your nozzles apply water faster than the soil can absorb it, Rachio's Smart Cycle feature will automate cycle soak within the schedule, eliminating runoff by filling up your zone's Water Tank slowly, over an extended time period.
Consider yourself a Lawn Geek?
Below are a few resources & interactive maps that can help ID your soil type:
USDA Web Soil Survey - pick an Area of Interest (AOI), search available data
USDA Soil Surveys by State - available surveys by State & Area/County (Tables / listed data)
UCDavis SoilWeb App - zoom to Location, select a region within boundary lines
How to test your soil
The first step to understanding your lawn lies in knowing what soil consists of -particles, water,&air. The ratios between these three help determine the Soil Type you need to enterinto the Rachio App. The three basic types of soil areClay,Loam, andSand. The most reliable way to figure out your specific soil type is to perform one of the following tests. These require you to get your hands dirty.
The"MasonJarTest"
Spread soil on a newspaperto dry
Remove all rocks, trash, roots, etc.
Crush lumps and clods.
Finely pulverize the soil.
Fill a tall, slender jar(like a quart canning jar) one-quarter full of soil.
Add water until the jar is three-quarters full
Add non-foaming dishwasher detergent, abouta teaspoon.
Put on a tight fitting lid and shake hard for 10 to 15 minutes.
This shaking breaks apart the soil aggregates and separates the soil into individual mineral particles.
Set the jar where it will not be disturbed for 2-3 days.
Soil particles will settle out according to size.
After 1 minute, mark on the jar the depth of the sand.
After 2 hours, mark on the jar the depth of the silt.
When the water clearsmark on the jar the clay level.
This typically takes 1 to 3 days, but some soils may take weeks.
Measure the thicknessof the sand, silt, and clay layers.
Thickness of sand deposit ____
Thickness of silt deposit ____
Thickness of clay deposit ____
Thickness of total deposit ____
Calculate the percentageof sand, silt, and clay.
[clay thickness] / [total thickness] = ___ percent clay
[silt thickness] / [total thickness] = ___ percent clay
[sand thickness] / [total thickness] = ___ percent sand
Turn to the Soil Texture Triangle and look up the soil texture class.
The"HandsOn Test"
Ribbon test Squeeze a moistened ball of soil out between thumb and fingers.
Ribbons less than 1
Feels gritty = coarse texture (sandy) soil
Not gritty feeling = medium texture soil high in silt
Ribbons 1-2
Feels gritty = medium texture soil
Not gritty feeling = fine texture soil
Ribbons greater than 2 = fine texture (clay-ey) soil

View ArticleRouter Requirements
Although Rachio is compatible with most networking equipment, some network devices are incompatible.Usually when networking hardware does not work with Rachio, its because the hardware lacks support for the network protocols that Rachio uses to operate.
Rachio controllers support both dual band and single band routers; a steady 2.4 GHz connection on a secured (WPA/WPA2) network is required for Generation 2 and Generation 1 controllers, but Rachio 3 can use either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz connection on a secured network.
Incompatible Hardware
The equipment below is incompatible with Rachio. Be aware that the majority of this list is made up of older networking equipment, but may still exist as part of a home network. We try to keep this list up-to-date, but it is only indicative.
Tip
If you have a question about your router or other network equipment, please see the Wi-Fi Troubleshooting section at the end of this article.
Network hardware that may be incompatible without adjusting default settings:
Cisco RE1000 - Router Defaults to WEP encryption
D-LinkDIR-300 - Multiple setup attempts may be required by users.
MotorolaSBG6580 - Defaults to WEP encryption
Western Digital AC1300-J2F - Change Channel Width to 20Mhz
Netgear Nighthawk N7000 - Known issue when 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz share the same name
Linksys E4200 - Known issue when 2.54Ghz and 5Ghz share the same name
EdgeMax routers - Router Defaults to WEP encryption
Netgear /WPN824V3 -Router Defaults to WEP encryption
Linksys / WRT54GS -Router Defaults to WEP encryption
Linksys / WRT54G -Router Defaults to WEP encryption
Change Router Settings
To change your router settings, please reference SetupRouter.com (routers are listed alphabetically).
Wi-Fi Extenders FAQ
Extenders will work with the Rachio under some restrictions.
If the Rachio is in a central location that can connect to both the extender and the main access point, the Rachio may bounce between both access points.
If you see frequent disconnects you will want to make the SSIDs have different names and passwords
Wi-Fi Channels
The Rachio only supports channels 1-11. In Europe, 2 additional channels (12 and 13 are available). If your router moves to one of those channels the network will likely become invisible to the Rachio and drop offline or be unable to connect.
Wi-Fi Troubleshooting
To assist our team in better helping you with your Wi-Fi issue, wed ask that you complete a Wi-Fi diagnostic before you contact our support team in help solve your issue quickly. To complete a Wi-Fi diagnostic, please follow the steps in this support article.
Wi-Fi 6
We will be compatible with Wi-Fi 6, however, we will not be using any of its features at this time. We do not foresee any issues, as Wi-Fi 6 is designed to work with existing/legacy hardware, and is consistent with prior iterations of the 802.11 protocol, i.e. all 802.11ac routers/access points are able to function with 802.11bgn equipment.
WPA3 might be different but we do not have an update at this time. Again, we expect continued interoperability and the broadscale release will be able to accommodate existing/legacy devices.

Getting Started with your Rachio
Setting up your zones
Step-by-Step Instructions
Begin by selecting Setup Zones during controller setup. The app will work its way through all of your zones, beginning with zone 1.
The app will initiate a 60-second countdown and you will be asked is Zone 1 watering? Click YES if your sprinklers are running. Click NO if the sprinklers in that zonedon'tturn on.
Note: Selecting DISABLE hides the zone from view; it will not be available when adding a watering schedule. Select this if youdon'thave sprinklers in this zone (for example, if you have 7 zones on an 8 zone controller, you would disable zone 8).
Next, its time to configure your zones!
First, name your zone and add a photo for easier identification. Make sure your zone name is easily identifiable.
Based on your location, well select a default vegetation type. If this is incorrect, please choose another option.
Select your sprinkler head type. Most systems use rotor heads and fixed spray heads. Rotors are used to cover larger areas, like front and back yards. Sprays are used to cover smaller distances, like side yards. Each zone should only have one type of sprinkler head. Speak with an irrigation company if you find zones with more than one type. To learn more about installation or get in touch with a Certified Rachio Pro, click here.
Based on your location, well select a default soil type. The soil in your area is mainly sandy loam, but if you know that is incorrect, feel free to choose another option. Note: If you notice your lawnisn'tgetting enough water, you may want to take another look into your soil type and adjust in the app.
Select your lawns sun exposure. How much sun does this zone get? A lot of sun, some sun, a lot of shade, or mostly shade?
Next, youll want to select the slope of this zone to make sure youre watering the perfect amount to avoid runoff. Is this zone flat, or does it have a slight, moderate, or steep slope?
Rinse and repeat! Youll repeat these steps for all of the zonesyou'veenabled. If youd like to see the attributes of your zone again you can head to the Zones tab > Select Setup Zones at the top right to go through the setup process again.
For more information on zone setup, click here.

Creating your schedule - Odd/Even restrictions
What schedule should I choose?
Great question! New York American Water customers are encouraged to select a Flex Monthly schedule. Flex Monthly schedules determine an optimal, predictable monthly schedule. Rachio will automatically adjust your watering intervals and durations to offset seasonal weather changes. To learn more about Flex Monthly, click here.
Nassau County is subject to odd/even watering restrictions. The guidance below provides information on how to set up an efficient schedule that abides by these restrictions.
Note
With Rachio 3, you cannot edit the watering interval after the schedule is created. To edit, you would need to create a new schedule and select the appropriate interval (see below).
Step-by-Step Instructions
In the Rachio app, select the Schedule tab and then tap the blue plus sign to create a new schedule.
Select your schedule type (Flex Monthly).
When asked Which days are you permitted to water?, select Even/Odd interval and click Next.
If your home address is an even number, select Even days; if your home address is an odd number, select Odd days; if your home does not have an address number, select "Even days."
When deciding when to run the schedule select "Start At A Specific Time and choose a start time between midnight and 5 a.m.
Decide if youd prefer any start or end dates. Otherwise, just click next.
Make sure Smart Cycle is selected, then click next.
Ensure all Weather Intelligence skips are selected, then click next to confirm your watering durations and finish creating your schedule.
You can confirm your selection in the Schedule tab.

View ArticleWhat's the difference? Manual Delay vs. Manual Skip
Rachio lets you skip or delay watering if needed, and provides a couple of options to choose from depending on your scenario.
Manual Delay/Delay Water
Manual Skip
Manual Delay postpones watering events within 24 hours. Recommended for pushing off or delaying a watering for a certain time period (for example, if you don't want to water during a BBQ or open house).
Skip will remove or skip over the next immediate watering (not multiple watering events). Recommended for skipping a specific schedule run. Can be used to skip watering if you decide your plants have enough water.
Manual Delay/Delay Water
If you would like to set up a manual watering delay, this can be done very easily from the "More" tab of your Rachio app.
Note
Enabling a manual Water Delay will not stop any currently-running schedules; only future schedules will be prevented from running while the delay is active. Additionally, the manualWater Delay will SKIP the watering schedule(s) while active and does not make it up after the delay expires.
How to Set a Water Delay
More tab
At the top of the "More" tab, you will see "Delay Water". Simply click on this and a graphic will appear.
Choose length.
Choose the number of days that you would like to delay watering.
Check status.
Once a length of time is selected, the Delay Water icon will state the date that the delay is set to expire.
Check device updates.
In the "History" tab, you will see a notification for this when a schedule has been skipped.
Tip
Changed your mind and need to cancel a watering delay? Tap "Delay Water" in the More tab, then select "Off" to cancel the delay. Once successful, "Delay Watering OFF" will appear in your History feed.
Note
This feature was formerly called Rain Delay
Manual Skip
If you would like to manually skip a schedule that is due to run, this can be done very easily from the "Home" tab of your Rachio app.
Heads Up!
Manually skipping, then re-enabling a schedule will override any Weather Intelligence checks that would otherwise occur. As a result, skip thresholds may still be met, but the schedule won't skip.
How to Manually Skip A Schedule
Home tab
When on the Home screen, you can scroll to view a list of any upcoming schedules.
Skip
Find the schedule that you'd like to skip and click the button that says "Skip." Your schedule will now be skipped and will show a new "Run" button. You can hit that button if you'd like to reenable the schedule.
Note
You cannot manually skip an hourly interval Fixed schedule.
Note
You can only skip the next occurring schedule. If you need to skip schedules for longer than the next schedule, consider Manual Delay.

Important
Rachio recommends professional installation; however, we provide installation instructions for handy people with DIY skills.
Rachio recommends specific installation instructions (see Step 5) based on your pipe size and material. Using any installation methods other than those recommended could damage the Wireless Flow Meter or void the warranty. Using glue of any kind will damage the flow meter.
While installation times average 30 minutes, we recommend allowing 2 hours for completion.
Installing Wireless Flow Meter
Step 1: Make sure your system is compatible
Before proceeding with instructions or cutting any pipe, make sure your system is compatible:
Installation site must be within 300 feet of an installed and set up Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller.
Backflow preventer and installation area are aboveground (recommended). If you need to install underground, refer to this article for instructions.
The flow meter is not rated for potable water and must be installed after the backflow preventer.
System must have -inch or 1-inch pipe made of either copper, PVC, or PEX.
For 1-inch PVC pipe, 1-inch copper pipe, and -inch PVC pipe, you will need 14 inches of straight pipe between the backflow preventer and valve box.
For -inch copper pipe, you will need 16 inches of straight pipe between the backflow preventer and valve box.
If your system contains any of the following variables, you will need supplemental instructions to complete the installation.
System does not have the minimum required length of aboveground straight pipe
System has an underground backflow preventer

Quick Overview
Things you'll need, in order to troubleshoot:
Network Name (SSID) and Password are needed (open networks should not be used).
Network must be running on 2.4 GHz or dual band(separated bands are recommended, while "blended" [2.4 / 5 GHz] networks are not recommended).
Network must use WPA or WPA2 Personal security encryption. This helps ensure your network and connected devices stay safe while online. Rachio will not connect or display without this.
Note the light code the controller is flashing. Refer to links in Step 4.
Step-By-Step Troubleshooting
Update Wi-Fi
Have any of your network settings changed? (SSID / Password) If so, update your Wi-Fi network. From your App Homepage go to Device Settings > Update Wi-Fi Network and follow the steps provided. Please be sure to enter your network password correctly including uppercase, lowercase, and any other special characters as the network credentials are case sensitive.
Check Network
No recent network changes? Next, check your network. Are other connected devices offline? Restart your router. Unplug your router, wait for 15-30 seconds, and plug your router back in.Once you have done this make sure that other devices connect to your Wi-Fi network.
Router Firmware
Double check to see if your router firmware is up to date. If you purchased your router through your internet service provider (ISP), please contact your internet service provider'stechnical support to confirm that all firmware is up to date.If you purchased your router yourself, refer to the manufacturer's technical support documentation and resources for instructionsto update.
Unplug / Power Cycle Rachio device
Try manually power cycling your controller.Unplug the power cord from your Rachio, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Take note of the light code the controller is flashing.
Light Codes:
Generation 1
Generation 2
Troubleshoot / Strengthen Wi-Fi Signal
Check for any sort of wireless interference that could be interrupting the router's communicating with the controller, or any other device in your house for that matter. The biggest contributor to connectivity issues, from years of evidence,is often the placement of your controller in relation to your router. Materials in your home can interfere with the connection between your router and your controller, resulting in intermittent connectivity or unexpected disconnections.
Interference:
Low
Medium
High
Very High
Material:
Wood
Water
Plaster
Metal
Synthetics
Brick
Concrete
Glass
Marble
If there are any materials that could be causing interference, you may want to consider moving your router to a new location. This doesn't mean that you have to move the router to a completely different room or location in your house; sometimes moving the router to a different location within the same room will help. Consider moving the router out from underneath/behind a desk or cabinet.
Another option is to purchase a Wi-Fi extender or booster. An extender, or booster, will provide a device that was out of range of the router, or that had a poor signal strength, a stronger one. In addition, a power line adapter can be very beneficial. Power line adapters turn your homes electrical wiring into network cables. We advise browsing Amazon or Best Buy for the purchase of an extender or a power line adapter.

Rain Skip FAQ's
What is Rain Skip?
Rain Skip saves you water by skipping watering schedules before it rains, ensuring that your yard never wastes a drop!
How does Rain Skip work?
Rain Skip checks the weather one hour before your watering schedule starts. Any time a schedule's preselected rainfall threshold is met using observed and forecasted rainfall (rainfall in the last 24 and the next 24 hours), the watering schedule is skipped. For example, if you have your rain threshold set to 0.5", and it rained 0.25" in the last 24 hours and is expected to water more than 0.25" in the next 24 hours, your schedule will be skipped.
Do I need a physical rain sensor for Rain Skip?
Nope! Rain Skip uses the weather reported from your preferred weather station to make smart decisions in real time.
Does Rain Skip actually save water?
Yes! Rain Skip saves the average homeowner thousands of gallons of water as it skips schedules BEFORE it rains. Rain Sensors only skip schedules AFTER it has rained, as it needs to physically "feel" rain. Rain Skip makes use of free water from Mother Nature.
Rain Skip triggered a schedule skip, but it didn't rain. What's the deal?
Just like the weatherman, not all forecasts are accurate. Rain Skip is only as smart as the data it receives from the connected weather station. The schedule creator defaults the skip threshold to 1/8". If you wish to save the maximum amount of water and want to skip whenever possible, set the threshold to 1/16" (trace rainfall).
Rain Skip did not activate even though it rained, what gives?
There are a few hiccups that may have occurred. Check to make sure that your controller was connected before and during the scheduled run. If the controller was offline, a weather check would not have been able to be completed.
You can also check your weather station - is it reporting inaccurate information? If it shows no precipitation, there would be no reason for Rachio to skip the schedule. If you find issues with your weather station, choose a new station and let us know that you're seeing issues with your old station.
The weather reports for my house are often inaccurate. Should I use Rain Skip?
We think so, but you know your lawn and local weather best. The Rachio app will default to the closest National Weather Station in your area. Often times, there are Personal Weather Stations (PWS) that are closer to your house. These might better represent your local micro-climate. In these instances, we can recommend looking into a rain sensor to offset the data received if you feel the closest station isn't representative of what your home typically sees.
I have two controllers - why did Rain Skip behave differently on each?
Forecasts can change in a matter of hours, so if those controllers have different schedule start times, weather will be reported at different times. While one check may say rain when checked at 8:00, the other may not when checked at 8:30.
How do I adjust my Rain Skip threshold?
As a Weather Intelligence feature, Rain Skip can be edited from the Weather Intelligence tab. Any changes to your Rain Skip threshold are global, meaning that edits to this threshold will be made across all your schedules in just a couple of steps.
"More" tab
In the Rachio app, find the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen and select the "More" tab.
Select "Rain Skip"
Select "Weather Intelligence" and then find "Rain Skip."
Edit threshold
To edit the Rain Skip threshold, click the inches of rainfall (or the arrow next to it) and choose the new threshold at which you would like your schedules to skip waterings.

Installation Instructions
Tip
Don't miss a step! For a successful installation, review and follow all instructions carefully before installing your Wireless Flow Meter.
Step 1: Pair Flow Meter
Take the Wireless Flow Meter to the backflow preventer where it will be installed.
Do not put the batteries in the Wireless Flow Meter until prompted.
Open the Rachio app. From the "More" tab, select "Accessories," then add the Rachio Wireless Flow Meter. You will be guided through the pairing process and then prompted to continue installationusing this digital manual.
Step 2: Turn water off
Turn off water to the irrigation system at the backflow or at the main shut-off.
Drain the system by running any two zones for one minute each using the Quick Run feature in the Rachio App.
Step 3a: Connect fittings
Push the -inch copper to 1-inch copper Sharkbite fitting onto one side of the copper pipe transition (the 6-inch cut piece).
Push the 1-inch copper to 1-inch PVC fitting onto the other side of the copper pipe transition.
Important: Push the 1-inch PVC to -inch copper Sharkbite fitting onto the end of the flow meter so that the arrows on the flow meter point to the fitting.
Use a twisting action until the pipe or flow meter are seated against the thin ring (tube stop) inside the fittings.
Step 3b: Connect the copper transition and the flow meter
Push the 1-inch Sharkbite fitting on the transition pipe onto the flow meter.
Use a twisting action until the flow meter is seated against the thin ring (tube stop) inside the fitting.
Step 4: Measure and cut pipe
Instructions for cutting -inch copper
Identify 16 inches of continuous straight pipe between the backflow preventer and the valve box.
Mark 2 inches after the start of continuous pipe (this is often after a joint); this will be the top cut.
Mark 13 inches after the first mark; this will be the bottom cut.
Put a small X next to the first two marks.
Mark 1 inches above the top mark to indicate insertion depth.
Mark 1 inch below the bottom mark to indicate insertion depth.
Accuracy is important here! Measure twice, cut once.
Step 5: Cut and clean pipe
Make a clean, straight cut on the two innermost marks (denoted with Xs).
First, cut the top innermost mark.
Next, cut the bottom innermost mark.
Do not cut the pipe on the outer insertion marks.
Some water may leak out of the cut.
Use the deburring tool or sandpaper to remove rough edges and debris inside and outside the pipe.
Step 6: Install the flow meter
Important: Install so the arrows on the side and face of the Flow Meter are oriented with the direction of water flow. (Water flows towards the valve box; towards the ground.)
Push the flow meter, fittings, and pipe together firmly while twisting the fittings to the insertion marks.
All Rachio recommended fittings swivel 360, allowing for easy directional adjustment of the flow meter after installation.
Step 7: Turn water on
Turn the water back on.
Check installation site for leaks. If there is a leak, turn the water off and make sure the fittings are pushed up to the body of the flow meter and insertion marks. If the leak cannot be remedied, visit rachio.com/leak.
Step 8: Calibrate zones for leak detection
To enable real-time leak detection, you must calibrate the Rachio Wireless Flow Meter. In the apps "More" tab, select "Accessories," then select the Rachio Wireless Flow Meter. Follow the app instructions to calibrate.
Check your email for tips on monitoring water flow and leak detection with your Rachio Wireless Flow Meter.
Congrats, you did it!

Weather Intelligence consists of different features that act as weather triggers to skip the watering schedule or adjust watering durations. The schedule creator enables all of these settings by default.
Note
Editing these settings after schedule creation is easily done, on a per-schedule basis, using the "Schedule" tab in the navigation bar and selecting the schedule you want to edit. For details, please see: How do I edit a schedule?.
Video Guide
Are you a visual learner? The following three minute video will walk you through Rachio's Weather Intelligence features, and will provide some guidance on how to use these features.
Weather Intelligence FAQ
How exactly does it work?
Our servers get weather reports from our weather service, detailing the weather conditions before the watering time, checking 12 and 1 hour before the scheduled run. If these meet or exceed your pre-set threshold(s), the watering time is skipped (doesn't run that time).
App Settings FAQ
Rain Skip
This feature will skip the watering schedule when it's raining; if the precipitation threshold is or will be met at the time the schedule starts, the schedule will be skipped. You can change this threshold under Weather Intelligence in the "More" tab. For more details, please see: Rain Skip FAQ.
Wind Skip
This feature is the newest addition to our Weather Intelligence family! Prevent waste by skipping waterings when high winds are likely to scatter water intended for your plants. If wind speeds exceed your predetermined threshold, Rachio will automatically skip your scheduled watering. You can change this threshold under Weather Intelligence in the "More" tab. For more details, please see: Wind Skip FAQ.
Seasonal Shift
This feature will update your schedule durations on a monthly basis to offset seasonal weather changes. In short, durations increase from winter to summer and decrease from summer to winter. For details, see article: Seasonal Shift FAQ.
Saturation Skip
This feature will skip the watering schedule anytime the soil moisture balance of ALL zones will stay above the allowed depletion threshold between until the next scheduled watering. For details, please see: Saturation Skip FAQ.
Freeze Skip
This feature will skip the watering schedule based on the observed temperature; if the temperature threshold at or below at the time the schedule starts, the schedule will be skipped. You can change this threshold under Weather Intelligence in the "More" tab. For more details, please see: Freeze Skip FAQ.
What should I set the Rain Skip threshold to?
This is a user preference. The schedule creator defaults this setting to .125". If you wish to save the maximum amount of water and want to skip whenever possible, set the threshold to .0625" (trace rainfall). If you water infrequently you might want to skip only when there's been a good rain, set the threshold to 1".
How do I know if my watering time was skipped because of Weather Intelligence?
You will get a notification on your mobile device and an email to your account if you have notifications enabled. You can also see these notifications in the "History" tab of the Rachio App.
Can I turn off Weather Intelligence emails & notifications?
You betcha. From the "More" tab, click on "Account Settings", then "Notifications".For details, see article: .
View ArticleSummary
In this article, we'll walk you through the basics of winterizing your irrigation system and explain why its recommended for optimal watering performance. Check out our winterization video below to learn how to winterize with Rachio controllers and Wireless Flow Meters.
Tip
Do you have a Rachio Wireless Flow Meter installed in your system?Unlike most wired flow meters, the Rachio Wireless Flow Meter contains no moving parts and can safely withstand a blowout.
Video Guide
Rachio makes it easy to prepare your smart sprinkler system for winter and avoid freezing pipes. Watch this video to see how a winterization blow out works seamlessly with Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controllers and Wireless Flow Meters.
Why Winterize? Winterization Basics
If you live in a climate that experiences freezing temperatures, winterization is an important step in caring for your irrigation system and your Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller.Winterization is necessary in colder climates where pipes can freeze and burst if water remains in the system.
While you can manually drain the water from your system to help prevent freezing, some water can still remain and damage pipes. If all the water is not removed, you could have significant damage waiting for you in the spring. To protect your sprinklers from freeze damage, we recommend a sprinkler winterization (also known as a "blowout").
Steps to Winterizing
Step 1: Drain your pipes
Before scheduling a blowout, check the following:
Do you have any above ground piping?
Do you have an RP (Reduced Pressure) backflow, or a PVB (Pressure Vacuum Breaker) backflow? These above ground irrigation system pieces are especially vulnerable to freeze and can be costly to fix. Cracked pipes and broken backflow preventers are a pain that no homeowner wants to deal with.
If your system includes these components, we recommend scheduling a sprinkler blowout with a RachioPro prior to your first freeze. Check to see when your area typically experiences freezing temperatures using the map below:
Connect with a Rachio Pro
Map Source: The Weather Channel
Before the blowout, drain the external pipes that are subject to freeze first. To speed up the blowout process, share access of your Rachio controller with your irrigation professional. Click this link for more information.
Step 2: Blowout underground pipes
Sprinkler blowouts are an affordable way to prevent costly springtime repairs.A blowout is the process of removing water from external pipes and underground lines. This is performed by opening each zone and blowing air through the lines.
Rachio recommends hiring an irrigation professional for a blowout if your sprinkler system needs winterizing.Without professional equipment and expertise, the process can be time-consuming and could evencause system damage.
Find a Rachio Pro
Need to find an irrigation professional? Click the button below to find a local Rachio Pro!
Step 3: Put your Rachio into "Standby" mode
After the blowout is completed, there are a couple steps you will need to take in getting your Rachio bundled up and ready for winter. We recommend the following standby procedures to prepare for the colder months and get your controller ready for hibernation. To winterize your Rachio, simply place it in standby mode within the app. From your Rachio App Menu tab, select Standby Mode. Now your Rachio is ready for the cold months ahead!
Tip
While all watering schedules are paused during standby mode, you can still manually run zones using the Quick Run feature.

Soil Sensor FAQ
One of the most important concepts to understand with soil sensors isproper installationand accurate reporting of ONE sensor to manage an entire landscape.
A single sensor can be used to control the irrigation for many zones (where an irrigation zone is defined by a solenoid valve) OR multiple sensors can be used to irrigate individual zones. In the case of one sensor for several zones, the zone that is normally the driest, or most in need of irrigation, is selected for placement of the sensor in order to ensure adequate irrigation in all zones. Many lawns have multiple micro-climates that they need to account for; from south-facing and full sun to north-facing with a slope, a mesh network of sensors is the best approach for a true closed loop feedback of your lawn's health.
Wired Soil Sensors
The Rachio controller can be set up with a wired soil sensor to achieve bypass scheduling.
Please keep in mind some general rules for the burial of the soil moisture sensors, which include:
Bypass scheduling issimilar to that of a rain sensor; it interrupts the common wire and prohibits the controller from watering.
Soil in the area of burial should be representative of the entire irrigated area.
Sensors should be buried in the root zone of the plants to be irrigated, because this is where plants will extract water. Burial in the root zone will help ensure adequate turf or landscape quality. For turf grass, the sensor should typically be buried at about three inches deep.
Sensors need to be in good contact with the soil after burial; there should be no air gaps surrounding the sensor. Soil should be packed firmly but not excessively around the sensor.
If one sensor is used to control the entire irrigation system, it should be buried in the zone that requires water first, to ensure that all zones get adequate irrigation. Typically, this will be an area with full sun or the area with the most sun exposure.
Sensors should be placed at least 5 feet from the home, property line, or an impervious surface (such as a driveway) and 3 feet from a planted bed area.
Sensors should also be located at least 5 feet from irrigation heads and toward the center of an irrigation zone.
Sensors should not be buried in high traffic areas to prevent excess compaction of the soil around the sensor.
What soil sensors does Rachio support?
Similar to Rain Sensors, the Rachio Controller is compatible with most soil sensors. Wiring for common sensors can be found below. If you need help wiring or configuring your soil sensor, please contact [email protected].

Activate in the Rachio app
To activate your soil sensor within the Rachio app, got to "More", "Accessories", then select the sensor terminal your sensor is connected to (either S1 or S2). Then, toggle the sensor on (the toggle will show green when on) and make sure the sensor type is listed as "Rain" (NOT "Flow").
View ArticleWhat are flow notifications?
If you have a wired flow meter or Rachio Wireless Flow Meter installed with your Rachio controller, you can receive notifications to alert you of potential problems with your system.
Notifications can appear as push notifications, emails, in-app notifications, and events within the History feed.
Note
Some notifications are exclusive to Rachio Wireless Flow Meter and will not appear with wired flow meters. See below for details.
Why are flow notifications important?
Notifications should be relatively rare, but they are essential for alerting you to expensive or damaging issues related to flow rates or leaks. As a user, you cannot turn off flow notifications, as they are an essential piece of the flow monitoring process and crucial in alerting you if something is wrong. If you find that notifications are too frequent, you may adjust your thresholds to decrease your flow meters sensitivity.
What types of flow notifications may I receive?
There are several types of notifications. Some, like a high-flow leak, may require immediate attention.

Types of notifications:
High-flow leak with auto shut-off. This alerts you to a high-flow leak and any zones that have been disabled to protect against the leak.
here
High-flow leak without auto shut-off. This alerts you that a high-flow leak has been detected. If auto-shutoff is disabled, the problem zone will continue to run.
Low flow. This alerts you to any low flow observed outside of your set thresholds. This could deprive your landscape of necessary water or damage your system, so we recommend disabling the zone and attempting to resolve the issue.Check for common causes such as:
Root crush (where tree roots grow around a pipe and squeeze it closed)
Obstruction of sprinkler head
Low water pressure
Inactive Flow / Flow detected when no zones are running. This alerts you to flow detected while your sprinkler system is not currently watering (either scheduled or manual watering). If your system is not active and water is still flowing through it, this could signal a leak.To investigate the cause, check for the following:
Running hose connected to outdoor water
Stuck valves
Leaks between the flow meter and your valves
Tip
Noticing frequent Inactive Flow alerts? Your system could be slower to depressurize after watering, which can lead to false positives. Go to learn about false positives and how to adjust your Settle Time.
Battery low (available only for Rachio Wireless Flow Meter). This informs you of low battery in your Wireless Flow Meter before your battery runs out of power.
Flow meter connection lost(available only for Rachio Wireless Flow Meter). This alerts you to any lost connection between your flow meter and the Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller.
Flow meter reconnected(available only for Rachio Wireless Flow Meter). This informs you when your flow meter reconnects to your Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller.
View ArticleIs your Flow Meter registering flow greater than 25 gpm during calibration?
A flow rate over 25 gpm is very unusual, so we will first want to rule out the following circumstances:
Missing pipe transition
If you have -inch pipe, make sure that you installed a six-inch long, 1-inch diameter pipe transition piece as instructed in the installation manual. If you did not, consult the manual to retrofit the installation.
Pump in irrigation system
If your system has a pump, we do not recommend installing the Wireless Flow Meter. This is because pumps can cause vibrations that may interfere with flow measurement. Please contact support.
If you have confirmed your flow meter is installed correctly and you do not have a pump:
Return to the the calibration feature in the app, tap Zones and then the specific zone, then Edit. Select Flow settings and then Calibrate.
Before calibration, increase the pressurized time" to 5 minutes.
Flow rate still above 25 gpm?
If the flow rate is still above 25 gpm, a break in the line may be causing a high-flow leak. We recommend investigating to see if there is a leak. Once the leak is repaired, calibrate the zone to continue receiving leak detection and and water usage information.
