Rockbot FAQs | Comparably
Rockbot Claimed Company
Rockbot began in 2010 by reinventing the traditional jukebox, making it possible for people to request their favorite songs directly from their phones for the first time. Through that work in bars and entertainment venues, the team saw a broader problem: brick-and-mortar businesses across many industries were relying on outdated digital media tools, fragmented systems, and products that didn’t work well together. Building on the technology they had already created, Rockbot expanded its mission to develop a unified, multi-product platform designed to help businesses of all sizes create better in-store experiences and stronger customer relationships. Today, Rockbot powers Music, Audio Messaging, Digital Signage, and Streaming TV for some of the world’s largest brands as well as thousands of small businesses across the U.S., all managed through a single platform. read more

Frequently Asked Questions About Rockbot

  • How is that possible?

Your Rockbot player comes with a small SD card that buffers (roughly) the last 50 songs played. If you lose internet connectivity, your player will automatically switch over to the songs buffered on the SD card.

The benefit is that you always have music playing, even if your internet cuts out. You may not even notice that your service is in an Offline/cache state. Many of our customers only notice because the songs begin to repeat.

    What should I do?

There are a number of reasons your player may have gone offline. We've listed the top 3 solutions below to get you back in action:

Ensure the Ethernet Cable is securely connected at BOTH ends (Player/Modem). You should see a solid green and ablinkingyellow/amber on your player.

Troubleshoot/Reboot your player - CLICK HERE

Have you had any internet updates in the last 1-2 weeks? You may need to reference our Network Requirements with your firewall settings. - CLICK HERE

Tryusing a new ethernet cable or a different port on the modem/router (make sure it is an OPEN port).

    Reboot your modem/router.

  • What is the industry average?

Rockbots average song length is 3 min which is approximately 20 songs per hour. Rockbot has many controls in place to prevent song, and artist repetition, however, we recommend at least 50 hours (~1,000 songs) to get started.

For your reference, the industry average to reduce the feeling of repetition is a minimum of 100-120 hours of music or 2,000-2,400 songs in rotation. This number can vary a little based on the number of hours you are open and the diversity of your playlists.

How to prevent music repetition at your venue:

Increase the number of playlists and/or songs in your station. To increase the songs in your music rotation, we recommend adding additional playlists (Music Icon > Your Stations > Add Playlist) to your station(s) and/or syncing up a Spotify/iTunes playlist.

Check if you have an Energy Filter on. Log into your Web Dashboard at Rockbot.com (upper right-hand corner). Go to the Music Icon > Music Settings > Energy Filter. The Energy Filter will help you further set the vibe in your venue. However, it will also reduce the number of playable tracks. Also see: What does the energy filter do?

Review your active artists and playlists. Occasionally what feels like repetition is, in fact, a collection of songs by the same or similar artists which sound very similar.

  • Why does this happen?

If your player says it is playing from the buffer on the Rockbot dashboard it is a sign that the Rockbot Player does not have enough bandwidth or is unable to pull down the next track in time for it to play. This means the player is operating properly, and it detects a network issue at your site and is running in its backup mode. If you see your player playing from the buffer more than a couple of times during a day it would be a good time to investigate the health of your Network.

    What is "buffer"?

The small SD card on your Rockbot Player buffers ~50 songs which your system will revert to when there is no internetconnection.

Since the music is playing straight from the SD card, you will be unable to communicate with your device nor perform simple functions like skip or reboot during this time.

After every song that plays from the buffer, the Rockbot Player will automatically attempt to reconnect.

  • Note: Adjusting the crossfade is only available with the Rockbot Media Player.

    How Crossfade Works:

Crossfade is the transition time from one song to the next. Each number equates to a second of music overlap. If your crossfade is set to a 10 the next track will begin when there are 10 seconds left on the current track.

    How to Adjust Crossfade:

You can adjust the crossfade from the web dashboard by heading to Music icon and then clicking on "Music Settings" in the top toolbar. The lower the number the less overlap you will have between songs. The higher the number, the more seconds of overlap you will have.

Music Icon > Music Settings > "Edit" Crossfade

    Adjusting Your Vibe:

If you are looking for a more chill vibe, you will want to set your crossfade under 5. If you want to maintain a high energy level you will want to increase the crossfade to a 7-10.

    Examples:

Relaxed - A Coffee House will typically set their crossfade between 1-3

Upbeat - A Retail Store or Restaurant might set the crossfade between 4-6

High Energy -A gym or fitness studio typically sets their crossfade between 7-10

  • Much like a jukebox, customers can purchase additional credits to make requests on the Rockbot system. There are 2 types of ways for a customer to make a request: Shuffle Picks or Song Picks.

    Shuffle Picks

DJ Users are given 2 free shuffle picks per day when they check into a participating Rockbot venue. (Note: 20 free shuffle picks are the most you can bank at a time.) Additional credits can be purchased and used towards shuffle picks.

There are 2 main ways to select a shuffle pick:

A DJ User can selectan ARTIST they would like to play and then the Rockbot algorithms will selecta song from that artist.

A DJ User can select a PLAYLIST they would like the Rockbot algorithms to select a song from.

    Song Picks

A song pick is similar to selecting a song on a jukebox. DJ Users can search an album, artist, genre, or playlist and select a specific song of their choice to play.

If aDJ User makes a song pick or shuffle pick and then needs to leave the venue prior to hearing theirselection, they must CHECK OUT of the location to be reimbursed for their credits. Upon checking out, all previously selected songs or shuffle picks will be removed from the queue.

    Customer Engagement

Fellow DJ Users can vote on the songs in the queue for free. The votes and other activity on the system automatically influence the stream of music so that engaged customers will hear their favorited songs on every visit.

    Earning Free Plays

New Rockbot users get free credits and can earn more for actions like linking their social media accounts and referring a friend to use Rockbot.

  • If you have a Rockbot Player you will technically have 2 different sets of volume controls - the Rockbot Player and your speaker system. Traditionally the volume is controlled through your audio system. Youraudio system should provide the best audio quality for your business. With that being said, Rockbot offers an extra feature which enables you to further adjust your audio output.

When should I adjust the Rockbot Player Volume?

When you adjust Rockbot's volume control, you are adjusting the voltage output of the Rockbot player. This will assist you in further calibrating your audio levels. It is typically not necessary to adjust the music volume within the Rockbot Dashboard. However, if you do, Rockbot recommends setting the control to a nominal level that most systems are calibrated to and/or looking for. Rockbot's default setting is a 7 which = 1V RMS.

NOTE: Rockbot's minimum audio level is 1 (200mV) and ourmaximum is 10 (2V).Rockbot's Player output is configured for commercial grade audio systems. If you're using consumer level equipment or a home theater system, we do not recommend adjusting the Rockbot volume control beyond a 7/10 because it maydamage your audio equipment.

How do I adjust the Rockbot Player Volume?

If you have a Rockbot Player, you can adjust the volume via ourDesktop/Laptop Dashboard.

When logged into your Rockbotdashboard, click on the Music icon and select Music Settings from the top toolbar. The volume level ranges from 1-10 automatically defaulting to a level 7.

For a few extra credits, you can choose a song as a priority pick and it will jump ahead of the normal picks in the queue!

    What are sponsored plays?

Sponsored plays allow businesses subscribed tothe Rockbot Engage plan to make interactions free for their customers onthe Rockbot DJ app. Free of charge sponsored plays will be available for customers immediately after purchase and normal credit pricing will resume once all sponsored plays are used.

Why can't I pick certain songs?

There are 2 reasons why a song may not be available.

Licensing Restrictions: Due to music licensing guidelines, not all songs are available for user requests but are available for background streaming or as a shuffle pick.

Business/Venue Preference: The venue that you are at has not enabled that song or genre. If you tap the gray play button, it will inform the venue of your request so they can enable that song for the future.

Why can't I find a particular artist in the library?

If you are unable to find the artist you are looking for, its likely that the venue has chosen not to offer the song, artist or genre in its catalog. Its also possible we may not have the artist quite yet.

Currently, the Rockbot library contains over 14 million songs and counting. Were always adding new content and are committed to securing proper licensing rights prior to adding new music.

  • Does the Rockbot Web Dashboard or the Remote App show music is streaming, however, there is no sound (or there is static) coming through your speaker system? If the answer is "yes", the following troubleshooting steps will help you isolate the issue and identify if this is a Rockbot Player Issue or a Speaker/Amplifier Issue.

    Step 1: Check the Connections

Confirm that music should be playing ( Web Dashboard or the Remote App active music queue) and that the system is not offline or paused.

Confirm the audio source is the Rockbot Player.

Check the player volume under the Music Settings. Make sure the volume is turned up on the dashboard between 7-10.

Confirm how many cables are coming from the player and that they are all connected and firmly in place:Power Cord, Ethernet and Audio Cable

Make sure the amplifier/adaptor and audio cable are firmly connected together.

Confirm that the audio equipment is Turned On.

Confirm the audio cord is connected into the proper input and mode (where the audio cable is connected on the back).

Make sure the audio on the amplifier is turned up.

Make sure the speakers are not muted.

If it's a home theatre amplifier, make sure Speakers A and B are on.

Sometimes leaving the amplifier turned off for at least 15 minutes before turning it back on can reset the mute.

Step 2: Check the Audio Port

Plug a pair of headphones with an audio port into your Rockbot Player.

If, YES, you hear music and it's clear, the issue is with your speaker/amplifier.

Confirm that the audio cable is firmly seated into your streaming device and into your speaker system/amplifier

Confirm that your audio system/amplifier is turned on and set on the correct input

Adjust the volume knob on your speaker system/amplifier higher

If, NO, you do not hear music. Give us a call/chat/email. There may be an issue with your device.

If you do not hear audio from the Rockbot Player and your Player is online, reach out to [email protected] or 415-813-6020 Ext 1 for advanced troubleshooting.

  • These FAQs are designed to help guide you through the many questions you may have about licensing music for play in your commercial venue.

Not many people are aware of this, but when you listen to a song, youre actually hearing two distinct pieces of intellectual property: The composition (the part of the song which could be represented on sheet music) and the master recording of the song (a specific recording of a song. It is not at all uncommon for a song to be written by someone other than the performer. As such, there are actually two different revenue streams generated from the commercial use of music: One for the recording itself, and a second one for the composition.

Just as youre entitled to compensation when a customer buys something from your business or uses your facilities, recording artists and songwriters are entitled to fair compensation from your use of their creations in your commercial establishment. Rockbot supports the rights of all artists for fair compensation for the use of their works.

For the purposes of this document, a performance of a work includes playing the work from a recording as well as a live performance of the work.

Licensing Terms and Conditions are different from country to country and change frequently, so please follow your customer email communications from Rockbot regularly.

Rockbot offers this information in good faith to assist people who intend to properly license their use of music in their commercial facility. These FAQs are not intended to provide legal advice. The laws governing music licensing are highly complex and best managed by professionals with domain expertise. Should you need further assistance, contact your Rockbot Customer Service Representative. We'll help direct you towards experts in this subject matter.

  • Have you recently (in the last 1-2 weeks) updated you internet, wifi, or network connection? If the answer is "Yes", youmost likely have a Firewall blocking Rockbot's outbound connection.

Common Scenarios: If any of the below issues apply to you, you may be having a Firewall issue:

You are a new Customer and are having trouble installing or getting your Rockbot Player online

Existing Customer - Your player shows "Offline" but you can still hear music (playing from cache)

Existing Customer - Your Rockbot Player stops playing music

Any Customer - You go to Rockbot.com and the page will not load

"Yes, I probably have a Firewall."

To remove the Firewall restrictions, you will need to send your network provider or firewall company our Network Requirements guide. Rockbot must have access to the URLs listed in order to successfully stream music.

You may need to send them the MAC address to your player which is imprinted on the bottom of the Rockbot Player.

"No. This doesn't apply to me, I don't have a Firewall."

Not true. You may not have a ton of permissions on your network, but you most certainly have a Firewall. Firewalls protect yourcomputers from being accessed by your neighbors. Many are automatically set up AND updated by your internet service provider or network administrator.

Solution: You will want to access your Firewall Settings/Permissions and update it with the Network Requirements guide or send the guide to your Administrator/IT Manager.

  • Rockbot is designed to be an enjoyableengagement experience for all. With that goal in mind, there are a number of factors which might limit the picks a DJ can add to the music queue. We've outlined those reasons for you below:

Staff Picks vs. DJ Picks:Customers (DJ Users) come first, so they will always be able to add more songs to the queue than a Staff Member.

    # of Songs in the Queue:Song Picks become limited when the queue of music gets long. This ensures everyone gets to hear their favorite song.

Shuffle Picks vs. Song Picks:Users - both Staff and DJ - are able to select more Shuffle Picks than Song Picks.

DJ Level: The higher a users DJ level, the more songs they can have in the queue at a time. DJ Levels are achieved over time by checking in, playing songs, and having song picks upvoted by other guests.

If the above makes sense but there still appears to be another issue limiting your picks, please reach out to our Rockbot Support Team by submitting a Rockbot Request Ticket.

  • The Rockbot Audio + Video Player will utilize approximately 20-40MB downstream data per hourof operation. This equates to about 40-80kbps (less than 0.1Mbps), but we recommend having at least a 512kbps overall Internet connection for optimal performance.

    Upstream bandwidth usage is negligible.

To measure your network bandwidth, visit https://fast.com from a browser on a device connected to the same network as your Rockbot Player.

  • If the interface is showing a song, this means that the music data is reaching your browser from our servers.

Check to see if the volume is turned up on the computer's dashboard and the connected speakers or audio system.

The next step is checking to see if you can hear audio from other sources like YouTube or iTunes. If you still are not getting audio it might be an issue with the security and the browser. You might need to restart the browser and make sure it is up to date.

IMPORTANT: Plug a pair of headphones into theaudio port or the USB adapter on the Rockbot Player to make sure you hear audio from the Player directly.

If you hear audio, check the following:

Is the audio cable connected to the proper port on the amplifier?

Is the amplifier turned on and the volume knob turned up?

Check for electronic settings on the amplifier andmake sure nomutes or safeties areenabled. Sometimes leaving the amplifier turned off for at least 15 minutes before turning it back on can reset the mute.

  • The SD card is the operating system for streaming music. The SD card needs to be inserted into the RockbotMusic Player for music to play through your speakers. The slot is spring-loaded and, depending on the model, will slightly stick out of the player.

Upon arrival and installation of yourRockbotMusic Player, the SD card should already be inserted into its slot on the player and pre-configured for your venue. It does not need to be altered, however, occasionally in transit, the SD card may become ejected. When the SD card is ejected, the player will NOT be able to stream any music. Simply push the SD card into the slot, you should hear it click into place.

Due to the gentle nature of this connection, make sure the SD card is always installed in the player. If your player needs to be rebooted, pull the power cord on the Rockbot Player, wait 5 seconds making sure all of the lights turn off, and then plug the power cord back into the device.

If issues arise, the Rockbot Player generates an engineering debug file on the SD card. Please contact support to further troubleshoot or call 415-813-6020 Ext 1.

  • First things first, you will need to have the Rockbot Request App downloaded and have an account created to be able to make song requests.

Are song picks limited in the queue?

Where can I check my DJ Level?

Open up the Rockbot Request App

Check into a venue *You can check into Rockbot HQ if no local venues are available

Click the "Person Icon" in the lower righthand corner

Under this view, you will see your current DJ level and your progress to the next level.

How can I increase my DJ Level?

There are 3 main factors which impact your DJ Level.

The number of times you check-in at a Rockbot Request participating location

The more song or shuffle picks you make (aka "plays")

The number of upvotes you receive for your song picks and shuffle plays

Why does my DJ Level matter?

The higher your DJ Level, the higher your pick will enter an active music queue. Example: If there are multiple Rockbot DJ's checked in at a location, a song/shuffle pick made by a DJ with a higher level will enter higher in the music queue. With that being said, high ranked DJ's will never be able to take over the music at a venue. Up-votes will always take priority over DJ Level and all DJ's are limited in picks by the number of song/shuffle picks in the queue.

  • If your Rockbot system or player are set to non-stop, 24/7 but still turning off, there could be a few things going on. We've listed the most common culprits for you below:

Your computer or streaming device turning off or going into sleep mode

Your Wifi rebooting during the night

Your DNS and DHCP refreshing ever night

If you have a Rockbot Player you may experience this less since your player can pull from the backup SD card while the system updates. If you are streaming through the internet, you are may need to manually hit play to restart your system from time to time.

NOTE: Setting your player 4am-4am is not 24/7. Your system will stop. If you have a player, CLICK HERE to view the article on setting player hours. If you do not have a player, contact us at the request link below so we can enable the 24/7 feature.

There are many categories of music usage which require a facility to obtain a direct license from the Performing Rights Organizations (PROs). For example, at the current time, NO background music service can cover instructed fitness classes, trainers bringing their own music, music played from CDs, etc.
