Frequently Asked Questions About Saatchi Art

  • Your image must be:

    A JPEG file

    At least 1200 pixels x 1500 pixels

    Less than 50MB

If you're selling prints, heres a general rule of thumb regarding image size: the dimensions of your JPEG file should be at least the size of the print, multiplied by 150 with a DPI of 150or:(Desired print length x 150) x (Desired print width x 150) at 150 DPIFor example, if you want to sell an 8x10 print, the image size should be 1200 pixels (8 x 150) by 1500 pixels (10 x 150) at 150 DPI. If the image size is 600 x 750 (that is, half the required size of 1200 x 1500), it wouldnt be possible for Saatchi Online to produce a quality 8x10 print.

  • Pricing your originals appropriately is critical to selling your work. As an artist, you should always be prepared to explain how and why you have arrived at your prices. Therefore, its very important to adopt consistent, fact-based pricing principles and methods. If youre new to the market, the following are some basic pricing principles and methods for you to consider.Price your art based on comparables. Set your prices similar to those of other artists with similar experience and who work in similar mediums. When comparing your works to others, considerfactors such as dimensions, medium, materials, and the artists' achievements such as prizes, exhibitions, press, etc., as these will have a bearing on pricing. Also, when looking at price figures for comparison, alwaysconsider art that has sold, not art that has not yet sold.Price your art like a retailerat two times the cost of materials.A common practice for new artists is to establish prices based on time, labor, and the cost of materials. Set yourself a reasonable hourly wage, multiply that by the number of hours it took to make the work and add that figure to the cost of your materials. For example, if the cost of materials is $50, your hourly rate is $20, and you spent 20 hours creating your art, then your work would be priced at ($50 x 2) + ($20 x 20) = $550.You should also be consistent in your pricing. If you are selling one work in multiple channels, make sure its price is consistent everywhere. Similarly, be consistent about pricing works within your portfolio--for example, your larger works should be consistently priced higher than your smaller works.Broaden your appeal byoffering works at various price points. Ifsomeone likes your work but can't afford a $3,000 painting, they will find a $500 painting more attainable. You can always increase your prices after you have made some sales and have factual evidence to justify a price increase. Keep records of all your sales and the prices at which you've sold works. Remember thatit's much better to competitively price and sell your work now to gain exposure (increasing your prices in the future) than to have your work sit unsold.

If your artwork sells, the cost of packaging the artwork for shipping is the responsibility of the artist. The cost of packaging materials should also be factored into the price of your artwork. Please readour packaging guidelines to reviewthe required packaging materials in the event that your artwork sells.

Oversized WorksNote that for larger, oversized artworks that require a wooden crate, please add an additional 30 - 35 lbs (13 - 16 kg) to the physical weight of the artwork during your upload to account for the crate. Also, if you require professional crating services, note that these services may cost up to $500.00 USD. We highly suggest that you first research your total crating costs, and then factor these costs in when pricing your artworks. If your artwork sells, Saatchi Art will provide you with the shipping of your parcel, but the cost of proper packaging is responsibility of the artists.

    Promotional Discounts

Please note that on occasion, we offer promotional discounts as an incentive for new and returning collectors to explore the constantly updating selection of artwork on our site. Please reviewthis article for a better understanding on howyou should consider this when pricing your artworks.

    PHOTOGRAPH YOUR ARTWORK

One of the first things you must do in order to begin selling on Saatchi Art is to photograph your artwork, so you can share your works with collectors.

    Your image must be:

A JPEG file in RGB color format (not CMYK)

    At least 1200 pixels x 1500 pixels

    Less than 50MB

Please read below for some tips and important information on how to produce great quality photographs of your artwork.

    Lighting

Color Balance and Exposure - The color of the room, temperatures and use of flash can all distort the color balance, resulting in blues, yellows and greys that really should more closely resemble white.

Harsh Shadows and Reflections - Ensure your light-source provides even color and no directional shadows or reflections, which can distract from your artwork.

    Quality

Noise And/Or Compression - Avoid excessive noise by using a low ISO, (ideally between 100-200), or by shooting in sufficient light. (A cloudy day can be ideal, as the clouds work like a giant softbox). Check to ensure your camera is shooting at its highest quality settings and the file is saved at maximum quality.

Out Of Focus/Motion Blur - Review images at 100% when choosing the best shot, to ensure you also choose the best focus. (By shooting with sufficient light, you decrease the likelihood of camera shake when shooting hand-held).

Post- Production Over Filtering - Some files may benefit with post-production by adjusting color, brightness or contrast to more closely resemble the actual artwork. However, files that have been heavily post-processed, affecting confusion of medium or quality (color range) of artwork are subject to deactivation.

Upsampling - Increasing the file size only decreases quality. Instead of the misconception it will allow a file to be printed at a larger size, it actually decreases the quality in which the file will print.

Intrusive Digital Signatures Or Text - Artwork celebrates the signature of the artists, representing ownership and creation; however, digital watermarks or in camera date and times make your work appear less valuable.

    Composition

Parallel Angles/Rotation - If you must tilt artwork to take a photograph, ensure the camera is also at a parallel angle. A square or rectangle should have even edges.

Borders and Padding - Crop excessive blank space, artwork borders, mattes and padding. Adding extra space will not bypass you from minimum size requirements.

Composition: Rotation 90-180 - Artwork should be properly rotated upon submission.

Art Only - Increasing the file size only decreases quality. Instead of the misconception it will allow a file to be printed at a larger size, it actually decreases the quality in which the file will print.

    UPLOAD YOUR ARTWORK

Before you begin, be sure your image file meets our requirements for upload. Your image file must be:

A JPEG file in RGB color format (not CMYK)

    At least 1200 pixels x 1500 pixels

    Less than 50MB

Onceyou'veconfirmed those details with your image file, youre ready to begin uploading your art!

You will be asked for the following listing information when uploading your art:

    Artwork Title.

Artwork Description. This is a great opportunity to mention what materials were used to create the work; what type of surface the work was created on; is the artwork framed or unframed; and do you have any recommendations for framing or installing the work?

Date of Creation. When was the artwork created?

Artwork Price. When pricing your art, it is important to adopt a consistent fact-based price structure. As an artist, you should always be prepared to explain how and why you set your price. Prices need to be based on recent sales, the cost of labour and material, and comparisons with similar works. Compare your art to what sells, not what does not sell.

Category - Medium - Style - Subject Matter. This information will be especially useful for Search and Browse features. The more information you input, the easier it will be for collectors to find your work!

Dimensions. This is incredibly important information! Collectors often intend to hang artwork in a specific space, so please make sure you input the correct dimensions in either centimeters or inches.

Keywords. Choose a maximum of 5. Effective keywords describe such elements as: medium, subject, predominant colors, mood, materials, artists who inspired the work, and anything else that is distinctive or recognizable in the artwork.

A note on displaying multiple images:The number one request from interested collectors prior to purchasing an artwork online is to see additional images. Once you've completed uploading your artwork, you can add up to five (5) additional images. We highly encourage you to add additional images of your artwork hanging on a wall, detail shots, close ups, the edges, and the back of the artwork.

For more information on uploading your art, please visit our helpful article here.

    COMPLETE YOUR PROFILE +ARTIST STATEMENT

Every day collectors ask us for more information about artists they like. Usually this is because the profile section has not been filled in, so if you have not included any information about yourself -- where you studied, exhibition history and an artist's statement -- please add it to your profile information.

Although youdon'thave to include a photo of yourself in your profile, we highly recommend that you do, as many collectors are curious to get a glimpse of the artist behind the work. You neednt, however, provide a headshot. Photos of artists in their studio look great on our profile pages, and they are especially of interest to collectors, critics, and the general public.

This kind of information can increase your chances of selling work and being noticed by curators. You can update these sections of your account by going to Account- Profile Information. Below are the following tips on how to do so.

    Complete Your Bio

Finding out more about you as an artist is very important to art collectors who are considering buying your work, as well as to our own curators when selecting artworks for Saatchi Arts featured collections and special series such as Inside the Studio and One to Watch.

Your bio should include such information as: where you were born and raised; where you currently live; your education; prizes and awards you've won; exhibitions thatyou'vetaken part in; and collections (both private and public) that include your work.

Your artistic influences and where you draw inspiration

    Your medium(s)/technique(s)of choice and why

    Whether you're self-taught or received formal education/tutelage

    Artists you've worked under/with

    Prizes and awards you've won

    Exhibitions thatyou'vetaken part in

Collections (both private and public) which include your work.

In order to update your bio, first select Account Information - to the left select, Profile Information.

    Complete Your Artist Statement

An Artist Statement is a basic description of your works and your reason for creating them. A successful artist statement clearly explains the reason you've made your work. We recommend that an artist statement be no longer than 200 words.

Some questions that you should consider when crafting your artist statement include:

What is the subject matter of my work?

    What is my work about?

How do I make my work?

Where do I find the images I use as inspiration?

How do I want my audience to respond to my work?

If your artwork sells, the cost of packaging the artwork for shipping is the responsibility of the artist. The cost of packaging materials should also be factored into the price of your artwork. Please readour packaging guidelines to reviewthe required packaging materials in the event that your artwork sells.

    Oversized Works

Note that for larger, oversized artworks that require a wooden crate, please add an additional 30 - 35 lbs (13 - 16 kg) to the physical weight of the artwork during your upload to account for the crate. Promotional Discounts

Please note that on occasion, we offer promotional discounts as an incentive for new and returning collectors to explore the constantly updating selection of artwork on our site.

On occasion, we offer promotional discounts as an incentive for new and returning collectors to explore the constantly updating selection of artwork on our site. We find that offering promotions from time to time allows artists togain the attention of collectors previously unaware of their work anda better chance to make future sales. The discount codes typically give collectors between 10% - 15% off original works, and do not exceed these amounts. For works sold to the trade - interior designers and architects, for example - we give tiered discounts of 10% - 15% off original works.

If you sell an original work, Saatchi Art will receive a 35% commission on the final sale price. If a promotional discount code is offered, the discount will be deducted from the price of the artwork and the usual 65/35 split will then be calculated. It is worth remembering that Saatchi Arts commission is 35%, whereas the gallery standard is 50%. This means that very often even with a discount you will be earning more through your sales with Saatchi Art than if you were to sell through another gallery that takes 50% commission.

For open edition prints, artists are entitled to 65% of the profit on each sale. Profit is calculated from the final sale priceminusthe costs of production. It's also important to note that during your initial sign up, you agreed to the following condition (included in our official statement of terms and conditions )Saatchi Art reserves the right to promote and market Original Works of Art and/or Digital Works through the use of sales and/or discounts. The sale or discount amount will apply to the listing price of Original Works of Art and/or Printed Works relating to the Digital Works. After the discount code is deducted from the sales price, our usual commission of 35% will be applied.

All-In Pricing (Global Flat Rate Shipping)

All-inpricingmeans that when a potential collector sees your work on Saatchi Art, theprice shown will include thepriceof the artwork as well as the shipping costs.

We know from our collectors that they would prefer to know the total cost of a purchase, including shipping fees, before they start the process of buying a work. By giving them this information upfront we are confident that we will be able to sell more of your works.

Saatchi Art has an agreement with our shipping providers for a competitive flat rate shipping cost based on size, weight, and origin of yourparcel.

You do not need to worry about calculating these costs! All you have to do is enter the price of the artwork, and we will then calculate the shipping costs for you. Please note that on the artwork detail page, the listed price of your artwork will include the shipping costs. It will look similar to this:

When you are uploading your artwork, you will be prompted to list the price of your artwork, and you will immediately see your profit as well as the additional shipping costs.

In doing this, we believe that collectors will respond well to a more streamlined buying experience, which will result in more sales for our highly valued artists.

    USE KEYWORDS

To improve your profile and increase your exposure, we recommend that you add relevant keywords about each work in your artwork's detail page. The more information you include, the more ways people will be able to find your work using our search box. In addition to describing your artwork, keywords help collectors find works that are relevant to their search. This is done by matching collectors search terms with the keywords entered in by the artist. For this reason, we require you to enter in at least five keywords when uploading new artwork. Effective keywords describe such elements as: medium, subject, predominant colors, mood, materials, artists who inspired the work, and anything else that is distinctive or recognizable in the artwork.

Carefully selected keywords and thorough artwork detail descriptions can go a very long way to improve your visibility on Saatchi Art and on search engines like Google and Bing. We have a few tips for crafting great keywords!

    1. Use your strongest keywords first

In both the keyword and the artwork description fields, lead with your strongest keywords. When returning search results, Google pays greater attention to the first several words in the title and description of your works so make these words count.

    2. Max out your artwork description and keywords

We allow artists to add up to 12 keywords and 56 characters in the description for each artwork take advantage of this space to include strong, relevant wording about your artwork. You can also use compound keywords two or more words strung together, like pencil drawing to maximize the number of keywords you can include. Make sure to only include keywords that accurately and honestly describe your artwork; keyword stuffing can actually hurt your SEO.

    3. Diversify your keywords and your artwork descriptions

Dont use the same artwork description and set of keywords for all similar artworks in your portfolio. This targets just one type of buyer, and limits your visibility across other searches. For example, if you have added keywords, modern, figurative, blue, collage to one artwork, for the next similar artwork consider swapping figurative with nude or portrait, and blue with royal blue or indigo.

  • Many artists ask if we have any tips for how they can achieve success on Saatchi Artand we certainly do! We encourage you to read and follow the 6Helpful Tipsbelow to maximize your chances of making successful sales on the site.

Tip #1 - Upload Quality/Accurate Photographs of your Artwork

Its extremely important that the photograph you use to represent your artwork to buyers be as true to life as possible. If the artwork has changed in appearance from when the photograph was taken, please take the time to re-photograph the work.

Also, since our collectorscan'tsee the works in person, they heavily rely on our View in a Room feature to visualize how an artwork will look in their home. In order for this feature to work correctly and to your advantage, please ensure that: 1) the dimensions you enter in the artwork details are correct and 2) crop out any areas in the photograph that are not part of the artwork itself. For example, ifyou'vetaken a picture of your painting on a wall, please tightly crop the photo at the edges of the painting so that the wall is not seen.

For an informative video on the technical aspects of photographing artwork such as lighting (color balance and exposure), quality (compression, filters, focus, etc.), and composition (angles, rotation, etc.) visit the Selling Your Art / Image Upload page.

Tip #2 - Write a Detailed Artist Bio and Accurate Artwork Descriptions

Our collectors are not only interested in your work, but in you as an artist. Therefore, we encourage you to write a detailed artist bio highlighting your history, creative process(es), your motivation for creating art, etc. For help, see: What should I write in my artist bio?

Please take the time to write a detailed and compelling artwork description! They help collectors and our curators discover new works whenthey'researching for something specific, tell a buyer exactly what to expect when the artwork arrives, and they provide collectors with interesting background information about the work. For help, see: How do I write an artwork description?

Tip #3 - Keep Your Portfolio Up To Date

If one of the worksyou'veuploaded to Saatchi Art is sold elsewhere, we encourage you to keep the image up on our site, as collectors are interested in seeing the worksyou'vesold as well as the works that are currently available. However, its important that you edit the artwork details to indicate to collectors that the work is sold and no longer available for purchase. (Note that If the work is sold through Saatchi Art, theres no need to update the artwork details, as theyll be updated automatically.) For instructions, see: I sold my work elsewhere! How do I update my Saatchi Art Portfolio?

Tip #4 - Appropriately Price Your Artwork

Pricing your originals appropriately is critical to selling your work. As an artist, you should always be prepared to explain how and why you have arrived at your prices. Therefore, its very important to adopt consistent, fact-based pricing principles and methods. We offer some of these methods in our FAQ: How do I price my artwork?

Tip #5 - Know How to Estimate Your Artworks Shipping Dimensions and Weight

Ifyou'vealready uploaded works for sale on our site, then you know that we require artists to estimate the size and weight of a work after its been packaged for shipment. We use these measurements to generate an estimated shipping cost for the buyerwhich, of course, is something that is very influential in their decision to purchase a work. For that reason, its very important that youdon'tsignificantly under- or over-shoot the shipping costs.

On the other hand, we understand that it's challenging for artists to have to estimate the shipping dimensions and weight of artworks that they havent boxed or crated yet. However, there is a way to arrive at a good estimate! For instructions on how to do this, please see: How do I estimate shipping dimensions and weight?

    Tip #6 -Promote Yourself!

To improve your profile and increase your exposure, take advantage of what Saatchi Art offers and what you can do yourself.

We strongly encourage you to market yourself via social media websites, email, and so on.

Social media websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, allow you to alert your followers about new artyou'vegot for sale, driving traffic back to your Saatchi portfolio and encouraging sales.

Utilize our built in social share features to easily post to your social media accounts. You can share your artwork through Facebook, Pinterest, or Twitter as well as email directly from yourartwork's detail page.

Every artist has an equal opportunity to be selected for a special feature by our curators. Maintaining an up-to-date and informative profile, and promoting your work can expose you to potential customers. Being an active user of Saatchi Art will catch our curators attention.

HOW DO I WRITE AN ARTWORK DESCRIPTION?

Want to increase sales and ensure that buyers will be fully satisfied with your artwork? Write detailed art descriptions! We know how exciting it is for you when you sell one of your works. We also know how disappointing it is for both you as the artist and for the collector if the artwork is returned for a refund. Too often, the reason that buyers give us for returning an artwork is that the description didnt include important details about the work. So, we want to help you avoid this! Detailed artwork descriptions help collectors and our curators discover new works whenthey'researching for something specific, as well as tell a buyer exactly what toexpect when the artwork arrives.

    Art descriptions should include:

What extra materials were used to create the work?

What type of surface the work was created on?

Whether the artwork is framed or unframed?

Any recommended framing or installation procedures?

Heres what a detailed description looks like:

HOW DO I PRICE MY ARTWORK?

Pricing your originals appropriately is critical to selling your work. As an artist, you should always be prepared to explain how and why you have arrived at your prices. Therefore, its very important to adopt consistent, fact-based pricing principles and methods.

    Oversized Works

Note that for larger, oversized artworks that require a wooden crate, please add an additional 30 - 35 lbs (13 - 16 kg) to the physical weight of the artwork during your upload to account for the crate.

When you are uploading your artwork, you will be prompted to list the price of your artwork, and you will immediately see your profit as well as the additional shipping costs

We believe that collectors will respond well to a more streamlined buying experience, which will result in more sales for our highly valued artists.

HOW DO I LIST A DIPTYCH OR A TRIPTYCH?

If your artwork is adiptych or triptych, or has any component of having multiple panels that are not connected - please checkthe box,"This is a multi-panel artwork" on the Packaging pageduring upload.

This is very important because it will help to calculate your customer's shipping cost.

This detail should also be written as a note in yourDescription field so that your customer can read exactly what to expect upon delivery.

  • We understand that it's challenging to estimate the shipping weight of artworks that haven't been packaged yet, but there's a way to arrive at a good estimate!

The "shipping weight" isthe approximated weight of thepackagedartwork. In order to provide a fairly accurate shipping weight, please factor in the weight of the physical artwork as well as the weight of the additional packaging materials (the box or crate, the tube, the foam board, etc)

Refer to our Packaging Guidelines to figure out what packaging materials youll need for your work (e.g. a cardboard box, wooden crate, tube mailer, etc.). For example, according to our guidelines, a 18 x 24 unframed painting must be securely wrapped in bubble wrap (and other protective materials) and placed in a sturdy cardboard box.

    Terms and Conditions

If you do not know the exact weight of your materials, please approximate using your best judgement. For larger artworks requiring a wood crate, please see the note below regarding "Oversized Works."

For banks outside of the United States, please contact your bank as they will most likely charge a foreign check deposit fee and a conversion fee.

How To Request a Payout Via Bank Wireon the Sales Dashboard:

    Please note the followingimportant information:

Before requesting payment by bank wire transfer, pleasecontact your bank regarding transfer/conversion/shared bank fees you might incur.

At any time there is a wire transfer, from Saatchi Art's bank (US Bank) to the artist's bank (your bank) there is always a fee deducted. This fee is taken by the bank from both parties which is something that Saatchi Art doesnot have control over. Furthermore, depending on the relationship that our bank has with the artist's chosen bank, these banks would then dictate which intermediary bank to use when sending a wire transfer. Intermediary banks also charge a fee.

There is a possibility that the bank fees will be higher than your commissions/royalties payout. Therefore, if your payout amount is less than $100,we will decline your bank wire request in order toprevent your payout from being completely wiped out by bank fees. We suggest waiting for your funds to reach $100 before requesting another bank wire transfer. If you'd like to receive your payment immediately, please request by PayPal instead.

Also, please note that a Wire Transfer is a different method from ACH (Also called Direct Deposit). At this time, we only accept Wire Transfer and we do not accept ACH. It is important to understand the difference-- if you provide your direct deposit information, your payment will be rejected by your bank. This will cause severe delays and complications. Please contact your local bank to understand your Wire Transfer account information before you select this option.

Ensure that the full legal name of the owner of the bank account is the same as the full legal name of the artist on the tax form. If not, we will declineyour payout by Bank Wire Transfer request.

Step 1:Once your payouthas become available on your Sales Dashboard, the salewill be marked as "Completed" in the Status column. If your funds are available in your Sales Dashboard, the "Request Payout" link will be visible.

Step 2: Click"Request Payout" on the Sales Dashboard

And select "Bank Wire Transfer"Step 3:Enter your contact information andselect Bank Wire Transfer as your payment method. To ensure quick payment processing, please provide valid bank wire details in full within your payout requestand NOT through email. When providing your bank wire details, please take note of the following:

Provide the details for yourfinal destinationbank, NOT an intermediary bank. That is, ifyour funds will first be transferred to an intermediary bankbefore being sent to your financial institution, please only give us the details for the finaldestination bank.

If you provide an IBAN, you must alsoprovide a BIC/SWIFT code.

If you provide an Account Number, you must alsoprovide a BIC/SWIFT code.

Note for UK artists:When requesting a Bank Wire Transfer, artists in the UK must provide an IBAN number along with a BIC/SWIFT code. Note that we no longer offer Western Union as a payment option.

Step 4:You should receive funds in your bank account within fourteen (14) days after submitting your payout request. Please wait at least fourteen (14) days before inquiring about your payment.NOTE:We advise that you contact your bank regarding transfer/conversion/shared bank fees you might incur before selecting the Bank Wire Transfer option. There is a possibility that the bank fees will be higher than your commissions/royalties payout.

Transferring Funds To Another Person's Bank Account

If you would like your funds to be transferred to an account owned by another family member, close relative, or legal guardian, we will require a copy of a tax form to be filled out by the account holder to whom the funds will be delivered. Once we have the proper tax form, we will be able to send funds directly to the chosen persons account and not directly to the artist.

    ABOUT PROMOTIONAL DISCOUNTS

If a discount has been applied to your sale, it's because the collector redeemed a special promotional discount while purchasing your work. On occasion, we offer promotional discounts as an incentive for new and returning collectors to explore the constantly changingselection of artwork on our site. We find that offering promotions from time to time allows artists togain the attention of collectors previously unaware of their work anda better chance to make future sales.

The discount codes typically give collectors between 10% - 20% off original works, and do not exceed these amounts. For works sold to the trade - interior designers and architects, for example - we give tiered discounts of 10% - 20% off original works.

This means that very often (even with a discount) you will be earning more through your sales with Saatchi Art than if you were to sell through another gallery that takes 50% commission.

It is also important to note that during your initial sign up, you agreed to thiscondition (included in our official statement of terms and conditions ).

Saatchi Art reserves the right to promote and market Original Works of Art and/or Digital Works through the use of sales and/or discounts. The sale or discount amount will apply to the listing price of Original Works of Art and/or Printed Works relating to the Digital Works. After the discount code is deducted from the sales price, our usual commission of 35% will be applied.

    SCHEDULE OF PAYMENTS

If you sell an original work of art, your payment will be released 7 days after delivery of the artwork to your customer.

If you sell an open edition print, your payment will be released 30 days after the delivery of the artwork to your customer. Please note production and shipping times. Artists typically experience a 40 day wait from the notification of their sale to the notification that their payment has been released.

If you sell a limited edition print through Limited By Saatchi Art, your payment will be released 30 days after delivery of the print to your customer. Artists typically experience about a 40 day wait from the day of their sales notification, to the release of their payment.

    Paintings

Below are instructions for how to package:

    Framed paintings

    Rolled canvas paintings

Please follow the instructions appropriate for your work. For complete instructions, download our complete Packaging Guidelines (which also includes information on the common causes of artwork damage, the proper packing materials, links to additional resources, and more)located at the bottom of this article.

All artworks that are 48 inches or aboveon any one sideneed to be packaged into a wood crate.IMPORTANT: Always make certain that your painting is completely dry before packaging it for shipment. Sometimes paint can appear dry when its not. Since drying time depends on such factors as the type and brand of paint, the drying mediums used (if any), the paint colors, etc., you must research the correct drying time for the specific suppliesyou'veused. Our insurance will NOT cover damage to paintings as a result of shipping before the paint was completely dry.

    Paintings Smaller Than 48x 48

    What youll need:

Glassine paper or acid-free archival tissue paper

Plastic sheeting, poly wrap, or heavy plastic bag

    Bubble wrap

Foam board at least thickor two-ply cardboard

    Packing tape

    Cardboard corner protectors

    Cardboard box

Step 1 Wrap the painting in glassine paper oracid-free, archival tissue paper. Note that any material that comes into contact with the surface of the work should be archival quality. We advise that you avoid touching the paintings surface with bare hands by wearing white cotton gloves or placing acid-free tissue paper between the work and your fingers when handling.

Step 2 Take four (4) 8x 8 square pieces of glassine paper or acid-free tissue paper (you may adjust the size of the squares to better fit the size of your work) and fold each in half diagonally to create a triangle, then fold in half again to create a triangle pocket. Place one pocket onto each corner of the painting.

Step 3 Taping only onto the tissue paper corners, tape the wrapped painting to a sheet of foam board (or two-ply cardboard) the same size or slightly larger than the painting for a firm backing.

Step 4 To protect against moisture, wrap the glassine-covered artwork with plastic sheeting/poly wrap or put it inside a heavy plastic bag. Use tape to seal all areas where water can enter and cause damage.

Step 5 Wrap the entire work with two (2) layers of bubble wrap for a protective padding. Wrap it

as you would a gift, using tape to secure it shut.

Step 6 Place cardboard corner protectors on the corners of the wrapped artwork.

Step 7 Place the wrapped artwork between 2 pieces of foam board that are at least thickness (ortwo-ply cardboard), forming a sandwich. Also, the borders of the foam board sheets should extend 2-3 inches beyondall edges of the bubble-wrapped artwork. Use packing tape to bind the foam board sandwich together. Be certain the sides are taped down firmly to ensure that the artwork doesnt shift around within.IMPORTANT: Take care not to apply too much pressure to the surface of your artwork. Doing so could create indentations on the stretched canvas.Step 8 Place the foam board-covered painting into a cardboard box with approximately three (3) inches of space on all sides. Fill the empty space with enough bubble wrap or wadded/shredded white paper to ensure that the artwork doesnt shift during transit.

Step 9 Use the H-taping method to seal the box. The H-taping method involves using long strips of packing tape to completely seal the opening flaps of the box. Use one long strip of tape over the horizontal opening between the two flaps, and two strips over the vertical sides of the flapsforming an H. Apply additional vertical strips of tape as needed across the sealed flaps for added reinforcement. Illustrations of this method are provided by different sources online. Just type H-taping method into the Google search box.

Step 10 Affix the shipping label to the package and put clear tape over the label so it doesnt get removed during shipment. Using a felt tip pen, write FRAGILE in large capital letters on the box, or use ready-made FRAGILE labels.

    Paintings Larger Than 48x48

All artworks that are 48 inches or aboveon any one sideneed to be packaged into a wood crate.

Note that in addition to these instructions, youll also be asked to refer to the instructions for crates. What youll need:

Glassine paper or acid-free archival tissue paper

Plastic sheeting, poly wrap, or plastic bag

    Bubble wrap

Foam board at least thick or two-ply cardboard

    Packing tape

    Cardboard corner protectors

Custom-made wooden crate (See: Crates )

Step 1 Wrap the painting in glassine paper or acid-free archival tissue paper. Note that any material that comes into contact with the surface of the work should be archival quality. We advise that you avoid touching the paintings surface with bare hands by wearing white cotton gloves or placing acid-free tissue paper between the work and your fingers when handling.Step 2 Take four (4) 8x 8 square pieces of glassine paper or acid-free tissue paper (you may adjust the size of the squares to better fit the size of your work) and fold each in half diagonally to create a triangle, then fold in half again to create a triangle pocket. Place one pocket onto each corner of the painting.Step 3 Taping only onto the tissue paper corners, tape the wrapped painting to a sheet of foam board (ortwo-ply cardboard)the same size or slightly larger than the painting for a firm backing. Step 4 To protect against moisture, wrap the glassine-covered artwork with plastic sheeting/poly wrap or put it inside a heavy plastic bag. Use tape to seal all areas where water can enter and cause damage.Step 5 Wrap the entire work with at least three (3) layers of bubble wrap for a protective padding. Use more if you believe your painting requires more protection (e.g. it has a raised surface). Wrap it as you would a gift, using tape to secure it shut.Step 6 Next, build a wooden crate and seal the work inside. To do so, follow all the steps given in the following section, Crates.Framed Paintings

    What youll need:

Glassine paper or acid-free archival tissue paper

    Plastic sheeting or poly wrap

    Bubble wrap

Painters tape (if packing a glass frame)

    Cardboard corner protectors

    Packing tape

    Foam board at least thick

    Shredded or wadded white paper

Very sturdy cardboard box if framed artwork is under 18x24"

Custom wooden crate if framed artwork is larger than 18x24

Step 1 Use a sturdy cardboard box or build a custom crate that will fit the framed painting plus approximately three (3) inches of space on all sides. (This extra space will accommodate the layers of bubble wrap to be added.)Step 2 If the frame has a protective glass or acrylic pane, remove it from the frame. If it does not, skip to step 4. Apply two pieces of painters tape diagonally across the glass/acrylic pane to form a large X. Should the glass break during shipment, the tape will help keep the broken pieces together.Step 3 Sandwich the glass/acrylic pane between two sheets of foam board approximately 2 inches larger than the glass on all sides. Firmly seal the foam board sandwich all around with packing tape, making sure that the glass/acrylic panel does not shift around within.Step 4 Wrap the painting in acid-free, archival tissue paper or glassine. Note that any material that will come into contact with the surface of the painted work should be archival quality.Step 5 To protect against moisture, wrap the artwork with plastic sheeting or poly wrapStep 6 Add cardboard corner protectors to the corners of the wrapped work. You can buy corner protectors ready made, or you can construct them yourself. Several online resources offer instructions on how to make them.Step 7 Wrap the framed painting in three (3) layers of bubble wrap, using packing tape to secure it.If your framed painting is larger than 18x24, youll need to build a wooden crate and seal the work inside. Please follow the steps within the section, Crates. If your framed painting is under 18x24, proceed to Step 8 below.Step 8 Sandwich the wrapped painting within two sheets of foam board and tape all the way around to secure it.Step 9 Place it inside a sturdy cardboard box. To minimize movement within the box, thoroughly fill any empty areas around the artwork with shredded paper. The more snug the fit, the less the potential for damage. Seal the box thoroughly with packing tape, reinforcing the corners.Step 10 Affix the shipping label to the package and put clear tape over the label so it doesnt get removed during shipment. Using a felt tip pen, write FRAGILE in large capital letters on the package, or use ready-made FRAGILE labels.Rolled Canvas Paintings

Paintings on canvas up to 72x72 may be taken off its stretchers, rolled, and shipped in a heavy duty mailing tube between 8 and 12 diameter, depending on the size of the canvas. Make absolutely certain that your painting is completely dry before attempting to roll it.What youll need:

Glassine paper or acid-free archival tissue paper

Heavy duty mailing tube with plastic end caps no smaller than 8 in diameter and up to 12 (depending on the size of your canvas).

A second tube of smaller diameter for inner support. (Youll roll your artwork around this tube and insert it inside the larger tube.)

    Packing tape

    Bubble wrap

Step 1 Sandwich your canvas between two layers of acid free archival paper. Make sure that the canvas is completely covered by the paper.Step 2 Roll the paper-covered artworkpaint side outwardaround the smaller tube to provide inner support.DO NOT roll too tightly as this can damage the painting!Step 3 Next, roll a layer of bubble wrap around the artwork for padding and to seal out moisture. Seal completely with tape.Step 4 Place this tube within the outer mailing tube. Fill extra space at the ends with extra bubble wrap, but take care not to crush the edges of your painting. Place the end caps on and seal them shut with packing tape.Step 10 Affix the shipping label to the package and put clear tape over the label so it doesnt get removed during shipment. Clearly mark the tube as FRAGILE.

    Flat Artworks Under 48x48

    What youll need:

Glassine paper or acid-free archival tissue paper

Plastic sheeting, poly wrap, or plastic bag

Archival qualityfoam board at least thick or two-ply cardboard

Bubble wrap or shredded/wadded clean white paper

    Packing tape

    Cardboard box

Step 1 Wrap the painting in acid-free, archival tissue paper or glassine. Place one pocket onto each corner of the painting.Step 3 Taping only onto the tissue paper corners, tape the wrapped painting to a sheet of foam board (ortwo-ply cardboard)the same size or slightly larger than the painting for a firm backing.Step 4 To protect against moisture, wrap the glassine-covered artwork with plastic sheeting/poly wrap or put it inside a heavy plastic bag. Use tape to seal all areas where water can enter and cause damage.Step 5 Place the wrapped artwork between 2 pieces of foam board (or two-ply cardboard), forming a sandwich. Also, the borders of the foam board should extend a minimum of 2-3 inches beyond all edges of the artwork. Use packing tape to bind the foam board sandwich together, adding extra tape to the corners for reinforcement. Make certain the sides are taped down firmly to ensure that the artwork doesnt shift around within.Step 6 Place the foam board-covered artwork into a cardboard box with approximately three (3) inches of space on all sides. Fill the empty space with bubble wrap or wadded/shredded clean white paper to ensure that the artwork doesnt shift during transit. Seal the box completely shut with packing tape, reinforcing the corners.Step 7 Affix the shipping label to the package and put clear tape over the shipping label so it doesnt get removed during shipment. With felt tip pen, write FRAGILE in large capital letters on the box, or use ready-made FRAGILE labels.

    Flat Artworks Larger Than 48 x 48

    What youll need:

Glassine paper or acid-free archival tissue paper

    Plastic sheeting or poly wrap

    Bubble wrap

Foam board at least thick or two-ply cardboard

Cutting tool of your choice to cut cardboard to size

    Packing tape

    Wooden crate

Step 1 Wrap the painting in acid-free, archival tissue paper or glassine. Place one pocket onto each corner of the painting.Step 3 Taping only onto the tissue paper corners, tape the wrapped painting to a sheet of foam board (or two-ply cardboard) the same size or slightly larger than the painting for a firm backing.Step 4 To protect against moisture, wrap the glassine-covered artwork with plastic sheeting/poly wrap or put it inside a heavy plastic bag. Use tape to seal all areas where water can enter and cause damage.Step 5 Place the wrapped artwork between 2 pieces of archival quality foam board (or two-ply cardboard) that are at least thickness, forming a sandwich. Also, the borders of the foam board should extend a minimum of 2-3 inches beyond all edges of the artwork. Use packing tape to bind the foam board sandwich together, adding extra tape to the corners for reinforcement. Make certain the sides are taped down firmly to ensure that the artwork doesnt shift around within.Step 6 Next, build a wooden crate and seal the work inside. To do so, follow all the steps given in thesection about Crates.

    Framed Flat Artwork

Follow the instructions below for framed flat artworks of any size. However, if your framed work is larger than 18x24, youll also need to refer to the section about Crates. What youll need:

    Glassine paperAcid-free archival tissue paper

    Plastic sheeting or poly wrap

    Bubble wrap

Painters tape (if packing a glass frame)

    Cardboard corner protectors

    Packing tape

Foam board at least thickor two-ply cardboard

    Shredded or wadded white paper

Very sturdy cardboard box if artwork is under 18x24

Custom wooden crate if artwork is over 18x24

Step 1 Use a sturdy cardboard box or build a custom crate that will fit the framed painting plus approximately three (3) inches of space on all sides. (This extra space will accommodate the layers of bubble wrap to be added.)Step 2 If the frame has a protective glass or acrylic pane, remove it from the frame. If it doesnt, skip to step 6 now.Step 3 Apply two pieces of painters tape diagonally across the glass/acrylic pane to form a large X. Should the glass break during shipment, the tape will help keep the broken pieces together.Step 4 Sandwich the glass/acrylic pane between two sheets of foam board (or cardboard)approximately 2 inches larger than the glass on all sides. Firmly seal the foam board sandwich all around with packing tape, making sure that the glass/acrylic panel does not shift around within.Step 5 Wrap the foam board sandwich (with glass/acrylic pane inside) with bubble wrap and seal with tape. Youll pack this alongside the framed artwork within the box or crate.Step 6 Wrap the painting in acid-free, archival tissue paper or glassine. Note that any material that will come into contact with the surface of the painted work should be archival quality.Step 7 To protect against moisture, wrap the artwork with plastic sheeting or poly wrap.Step 8 Wrap the framed painting in three (3) layers of bubble wrap, using packing tape to secure it.Step 9 Add cardboard corner protectors to the corners of the wrapped work. You can buy corner protectors ready made, or you can construct them yourself. A quick search on Google will lead you to several resources offering instructions on how to make them.If your framed painting is larger than 18x24, youll need to build a wooden crate and seal the work inside. Pleasefollow the steps within the section about Crates. If your framed painting is under 18x24, proceed to Step 10 below.Step 10 Sandwich the wrapped painting between two sheets of foam board and tape all the way around to secure it.Step 11 Place it inside a sturdy cardboard box. To minimize movement within the box, thoroughly fill any empty areas around the artwork with shredded paper. The more snug the fit, the less the potential for damage. Seal the box completely shut with packing tape, reinforcing the corners.Step 12 Affix the shipping label to the package and put clear tape over the label so it doesnt get removed during shipment. Clearly mark the crate as FRAGILE.

    Rolled Paper Artwork

Paper artworks such as sketches, photographs, watercolors, etc., may be rolled and shipped in a heavy duty mailing tube between 8 and 12 diameter, depending on the size of the work. What youll need:

Heavy duty mailing tube with plastic end caps no smaller than 8 in diameter and up to 12 (depending on the size of your canvas).

A second tube of smaller diameter for inner support. (Youll roll your artwork around this tube and insert it inside the larger tube.)

    Packing tape

    Glassine or acid-free archival paper

    Bubble wrap

Step 1 Sandwich your artwork between two layers of glassine or acid free archival paper. Make sure that the work is completely covered by the paper.Step 2 Roll the paper-covered artwork around the smaller tube to provide inner support.Step 3 Next, roll a layer of bubble wrap around the artwork for padding and to seal out moisture. Seal completely with tape.Step 4 Place this tube within the outer mailing tube. Fill extra space at the ends with extra bubble wrap, but take care not to crush the edges of your artwork. Place the end caps on and seal them shut with packing tape.Step 5 Affix the shipping label to the package and put clear tape over the label so it doesnt get removed during shipment. With a felt tip pen, mark the tube as FRAGILE in large capital letters.

    Sculptures

Since sculptures vary widely in terms of size, weight, delicacy, etc., its impossible to provide a set of directions that will work for all. Please use these directions as general guidelines, and, if youre at all in doubt, please email or call us for packing instructions tailored to your piece. What youll need:

    Bubble wrap

    Packing tape

    Shredded paper

Sturdy cardboard box for sculptures smaller than 12 and weighing under 5 lbs

Custom wooden crate for sculptures (see: Crates )

Step 1 Securely wrap the top half of the sculpture several times around with bubble wrap. How many layers you use depends upon the form and fragility of the work. Remember to pay attention to especially delicate portions of the sculpture. Cut the bubble wrap and secure the cut edge with tape.Step 2 Add protective top layers over the work using several pieces of bubble wrap large enough to cover and overlap the previously applied wrapping. Seal all around with tape.Step 3 Wrap the bubble wrap around the bottom half of the sculpture several times. Make sure to overlap the bubble wrap applied to the top half of the sculpture to ensure full coverage. Cut the bubble wrap and secure the cut edge with tape. Also, use the tape to seal the overlapped seam in the middle where the 2 pieces of bubble wrap meet.Step 4 As you did with the top of the work, create bottom protective layers for the sculpture with pieces of bubble wrap large enough to overlap the previously applied layers on the bottom half of the artwork. Seal it all around with tape.If your sculpture isless than 12 tall and weighs under 5 lbs, youll ship it within a sturdy cardboard box. Please proceed to Step 5.If your sculptureis over 12 tall and/or weighs more than 5 lbs, youll ship it in a custom wooden crate. For instructions on how to build a crate, please follow Steps 1 -7 in the section, Crates. Then, return to these instructions, starting with Step 5.Step 5 Before placing the wrapped sculpture inside, fill about 1/3 of the box or crate with shredded paper. If using a cardboard box, reinforce the bottom of the box with extra packing tape (across the flaps and up the sides) before filling with paper. Make a shallow well in the center of the shredded paper and set the sculpture inside of it. Fill the remainder of the box with shredded paper, surrounding the sculpture. Make sure you securely pack the shredded paper around the sculpture to minimize internal movement as much as possible during shipment.IMPORTANT:Make sure that the crate or boxs dimensions are approximately two (2) to three (3) inches larger on all sides than the sculpture itself for sufficient buffering. Also, there shouldbe more shredded paper underneath the sculpturethan elsewhere due to gravity compression.Step 6 If you are using a cardboard box, seal the opening securely with packing tape using the H-taping method. Just type H-taping method into the Google search box.If youre using a wooden crate, seal the top lid shut with screws ONLY (no glue) so that it is easily removable by the collector.Step 7 Clearly indicate on the crate or box which side is the bottom and which is the top by writing THIS SIDE UP and by drawing an upward pointing arrow on all of the side panels to let shippers know which direction the crate/box should be held or set down. Or, you may purchase ready-made This side up labels.Step 8 Clearly indicate which panel is the removable lid by writing UNSCREW THIS SIDE ONLY so the collector knows which panel to remove. . If needed, write any instructions (using a black felt tip pen) on the crate that will help the collector easily remove the lid.Step 9 Affix the shipping label to the outside and put clear tape over the label so it doesnt get removed during shipment. Clearly mark the crate or box as FRAGILE in large capital letters using a heavy black felt tip pen, or use ready-made FRAGILE labels. Please follow the instructions appropriate for your work. Crates

Use a custom crate for artworks such as sculpture, large flat artworks, paintings larger than 48"x48", and fragile items. What youll need:

Four (4) planks of plywood ( to inch thick depending on size and fragility of the work) for the frame

Two (2) plywood sheets for the front and back panels

    Drill

    Saw

    1 inch wood screws

    Wood glue

    Foam board, thick

Step 1 Measure your pre-wrapped artwork (wrapped according to the instructions given for your particular work), taking down the height, width, and depth of the wrapped piece. If youre shipping a painting, use these measurements to calculate the dimensions of your plywood pieces for the frame of your crate. Keep in mind that you will add a foam board lining to your crate, so accommodate for this. If youre shipping a sculpture, make sure that the crates dimensions are approximately three (3) to four (4) inches larger on all sides than the sculpture itself. The extra space will be filled with bubble wrap and shredded paper.Step 2 Cut four pieces of plywood according to the dimensions you took in step 1 in order to build a frame with an opening that can snugly fit your wrapped work. Remember to account for the thickness of the plywood when measuring length and height, and cut accordingly. The top piece of the frame should sit on and extend over the top edges of the side pieces, as it must be easily removable. This piece will act as the crates lid, to be unscrewed by the collector.Step 3 Begin building the frame by assembling three (3) of the plywood strips together with screws and wood glue, leaving the top piece (i.e. lid) off for now. It will be screwed on after the artwork has been placed inside.Step 4 Line the frame with strips of foam board, securing them on with tape or glue. If using glue to line the crate with foam board, wait for it to dry before finishing the packing process.Step 5 Cut two sheets of plywood to the same dimensions of the assembled frame. These will be the front and back panels of your crate.Step 6 Secure one sheet to the back of the frame using wood glue and screws.Step 7 You will then complete the packaging process by placing your artwork inside and sealing the crate around it. Lay a piece of foam board (the same size as the frame) inside the open crate, and place your pre-wrapped artwork on top. There should be no room for movement inside.Step 8 Cover your artwork with another layer of foam board. Place the other sheet of Masonite board on top of the frame, securing well with wood glue and screws. Do your best to ensure that the crate is air and moisture tight.Step 9 Clearly indicate which panel is the removable lid by writing UNSCREW THIS SIDE ONLY so the collector knows which panel to remove. If needed, write any instructions (using a black felt tip pen) on the crate that will help the collector easily remove the lid.Step 10 Affix the shipping label to the outside and put clear tape over the label so it doesnt get removed during shipment. Clearly mark the crate or box as FRAGILE.TIP: For ease of transport, you can screw a cabinet handle to the top of the crate. The screws should be long enough so that the handle doesnt come loose while someone is carrying the crate, but not so long that they protrude into the interior of the crate. Please follow the instructions appropriate for your work. For complete instructions, download our complete Packaging Guidelines (which also includes information on the common causes of artwork damage, the proper packing materials, links to additional resources, and more) located at the bottom of this article.

  • On occasion, we offer promotional discounts as an incentive for new and returning collectors to explore the constantly updating selection of artwork on our site. We find that offering promotions from time to time allows artists togain the attention of collectors previously unaware of their work anda better chance to make future sales. The discount codes typically give buyers between 10% - 20% off original works, and do not exceed these amounts.

(For more information, please visit our FAQ - " What Is My Payout Percentage For Sales ")It's also important to note that during your initial sign up, you agreed to the following condition (included in our official statement of terms and conditions ):Saatchi Art reserves the right to promote and market Original Works of Art and/or Digital Works through the use of sales and/or discounts. The sale or discount amount will apply to the listing price of Original Works of Art and/or Printed Works relating to the Digital Works. • The safety of your artwork depends greatly upon the type and quality of your packaging materials. Below are some DOs and DON'Ts regarding what packaging materials you should and should not use.To download our complete Packaging Guidelines (which also includes information on the common causes of artwork damage, the proper packing materials, links to additional resources, and more) click the link in the Attachments section below.

    DO use the following:

Bubble wrapAn adequate amount of bubble wrap will provide a surprising amount of protection by distributing pressure and impact across a wide area. Bubble wrap does two important jobs: 1) cushions the art in the event of impact 2) fills empty space, preventing unwanted movement within your packaging. For these reasons, bubble wrap should be your padding and filler of choice.High quality packing tapeAlways buy good quality packing tape! Heres why:

Sturdy tape ensures your outer package remains shut throughout transit.

When wrapping your artwork, high quality tape ensures fully sealed seams, keeping damaging moisture out.

High quality tape is easier to separate from the roll and usually comes with a more efficient dispenser, making it faster to apply

Dont use low quality packing tape because:

Its more difficult to apply, adding more time and effort to the packing process.

Its not very sturdy and is prone to breakage during shipping

Low quality tape may not be adequately adhesive, so may not provide good moisture protection.

Youll need to use more of it to get the job done

Acid-Free Archival Paper (Glassine)Acid-free (archival quality) paper is an absolute necessity when wrapping artwork for both shipping and storage. Archival quality materials are pH neutral (i.e. between 7 and 8.5) and will therefore have no chemical interaction with any objects it contacts. Though other types of archival paper are available, we highly recommend that you buyglassine. Its readily available by the roll from most art supply, craft, or frame stores.Foam BoardA sturdy support is necessary for safe packaging and storage of all flat artworks. Foam board (also called foamcore) is ideal for this purpose and you can find it at most art supply, craft, or frame stores. Foam board comes in varying degrees of thickness (depending on the amount of protection needed for your work), and can typically be purchased individually or in bulk. We recommend you use foam board of at least thickness. Archival quality foam board is also available from some manufacturers and it should be used if it will come into direct contact with the artwork.Cardboard corner protectorsCorners of flat artworks are especially vulnerable to shipping damage, thats why we require artists to use cardboard corner protectors. You can buy corner protectors ready made at many art supply, moving supply, or frame stores, or you can construct them yourself. A quick search on Google will lead you to online resources offering instructions on how to make them.

PVC pipe or heavy duty mailing tube

Shipping tubes can be easily bent during transit. That is why it is best for you to seek the strongest possible shipping tubes. If you are using cardboard tubes, we advise that you use a series of 3 tubes in total (2 internal tubes, 1 external tube). We encourage for you to use a PVC pipe if your artwork is especially large. PVC (plastic) pipes are commonly used for plumbing and can be found at your local hardware store. Keep in mind you will need to create the end caps as these are not intended for shipping. PVC pipes have proven to be extremely secure and durable.

IMPORTANT:If youre concerned about spending money on quality packing supplies, always bear in mind that buying cheap packing materials could end up costing youmoreif your artwork gets damaged.

    DONT use the following:

Styrofoam peanutsDONTuse foam packing peanuts. They're a hassle for those who have to unpack and re-pack artwork. They also settle during shipping and don't provide good protection.Second-hand filler (newspaper, magazine pages, plastic bags, etc.)Do NOTuse scraps of newspaper, magazine pages, or plastic market bags to package your artworks. These materialsdon'tprovide adequate protection and they may also leave an unfavorable impression on the collector who has bought your work.Non-archival quality tissue paper for wrapping artworkDONTwrap your artwork in non-archival tissue paper. Remember that anything that comes into direct contact with the work must be archival quality (i.e. acid-free, pH neutral). BUT, you may use wadded non-archival tissue paper as filler for empty space within the box or crate in the absence of bubble wrap (our preferred filler). Note that when we refer to tissue paper, we DO NOT mean FACIAL tissue paper (such as Kleenex). Facial tissue is for blowing your nose, never for packaging artwork!Garbage bin bagsYoudon'twant your artwork associated with garbage, soDONTuse garbage bin bags to pack it. You want your collector to remain absolutely confident in their decision to purchase your work. Using items like garbage bin bags, second-hand filler, or other items not intended for shipping artwork will, more often than not, leave a bad impression on art collectors.

    ARTIST BEST PRACTICES

Tip #1 - Upload Quality/Accurate Photographs of your Artwork

Its extremely important that the photo you use to represent your artwork to buyers be as true to life as possible. Although smartphone photosare convenient, the quality is poor and often inconsistent. For an informative video on the best practices and technicalaspects of photographing artwork, please visit the Selling Your Art / Image Upload page.

And, of course, if the artwork has changed in appearance from when the original photograph was taken, please take the time to re-photograph the work!

Since our collectorscan'tsee the works in person, they heavily rely on our View in a Room feature to visualize how an artwork will look in their home. In order for this feature to work correctly, please ensure the following:

Thedimensions you enter in the artwork details are correct and in inches

Crop out any areas in the photograph that are not part of the artwork itself. For example, ifyou'vetaken a picture of your painting on a wall, please tightly crop the photo at the edges of the painting so that the wall is not seen.

Tip #2 - Write a Detailed Artist Bio and Accurate Artwork Descriptions

Our collectors are not only interested in your work, but in you as an artist. Therefore, we encourage you to write a detailed artist bio highlighting your history, creative process, your motivation for creating art, etc. You're welcome to insert this information under your Account Information, select Profile Information.

We recommend that you include the following info in your bio:

Where you were born and raisedWhere you currently liveYour artistic influences and where you draw inspirationYour medium(s)/technique(s)of choice and why Whether you're self-taught or received formal education/tutelageArtists you've worked under/withPrizes and awards you've wonExhibitions thatyou'vetaken part inCollections (both private and public) which include your work.

Please take the time to write a detailed and compelling artwork description! The descriptionshelp collectors and our curators discover new works whenthey'researching for something specific. It also tells a buyer exactly what to expect when the artwork arrives, and provides collectors with interesting background information about the work.

(Note: If the work is sold through Saatchi Art, theres no need to update the artwork details, as theyll be updated automatically.) For instructions, see: I sold my work elsewhere!

We offer some of these methods in our Getting Started article.

Tip #5 - Know How to Estimate Your Artworks Shipping Dimensions and Weight

Ifyou'vealready uploaded works for sale on our site, then you know that we require artists to estimate the size and weight of a work after its been packaged for shipment. We use these measurements to generate an estimated shipping cost for the buyer -- which, of course, is something that is very influential in their decision to purchase a work. For that reason, its very important that youdon'tsignificantly under (or over) shoot the shipping costs.

Social media websites, such as Facebook,Twitter, and Instagramallow you to alert your followers about new artyou'vegot for sale, driving traffic back to your Saatchi Art portfolio and encouraging sales.

    GETTING FOUND

Feeling lost in cyberspace? Use keywords, optimize SEO and create a custom URL to improve your ability to get found by search engines and on the Saatchi Art site.

    Use Keywords

Improve your searchability on Saatchi Art by adding relevant keywords and a detailed description about each work in the artworks detail page. In addition to describing your artwork, keywords help collectors find works that are relevant to their search. This is done by matching collectors search terms with the keywords entered in by the artist. For this reason, we require you to enter in at least 5 keywords though we encourage you to use all 12 when uploading new artwork. Effective keywords describe such elements as: medium, subject, predominant colors, mood, materials, artists who inspired the work, and anything else that is distinctive or recognizable in the artwork.

    Getting Started tutorial

    Improve SEO & Search

In addition to helping your work get found on Saatchi Art, keywords also improve your discoverability on search engines like Google and Bing. Here are 4 tips to maximize SEO.

Tip #1 - Use your strongest keywords firstIn both the keyword and the artwork description fields, lead with your strongest keywords. When returning search results, Google pays greater attention to the first several words in the title and description of your works so make these words count. Not sure what your strongest keywords are? Read our step-by-step article for Brainstorming Your Best Keywords for Search.

Tip #2 - Max out your artwork description and keywordsWe allow artists to add up to 12 keywords and 56 characters in the description for each artwork take advantage of this space to include strong, relevant wording about your artwork. You can also use compound keywords (two or more words strung together, like pencil drawing) to maximize the number of keywords you can include. Make sure to only include keywords that accurately and honestly describe your artwork; keyword stuffing can actually hurt your SEO.

Tip #3 - Diversify your keywords and your artwork descriptionsDont use the same artwork description and set of keywords for all similar artworks in your portfolio. This targets just one type of buyer, and limits your visibility across other searches. For example, if you have added keywords, modern, figurative, blue, collage to one artwork, for the next similar artwork consider swapping figurative with nude or portrait, and blue with royal blue or indigo.

Tip #4 - Categorize your artworks correctlyMany Saatchi Art collectors, as well as our Art Advisory team, search for artworks by browsing within Category pages on the site, and through using filters like: Style, Subject and Medium. Think of where a buyer or a curator would logically look for an artwork similar to yours, and make sure you categorize with this in mind. If your works are categorized correctly, theyll be more likely to meet the right buyer.

    Tip #5 - Create a custom URL

Creating a custom URL will help your profile show up in search results on search engines like Google and Bing, as well as on Saatchi Art. Having a custom URL is also a best practice for branding and promotion. A URL that includes your name is professional and easy for fans of your work to remember. The unique username you entered while creating your account will automatically be used for your custom URL. For example, if you entered the username janesmith, your custom URL will be www.saatchiart.com/janesmith.

If you havent chosen a username/URL yet, do the following. (Note that this can only be done once):Step 1Hover over your name on the right of the top navigation menu and select "Account Information". You'll be directed to your Account Information PageStep 2 Type in your desired url in the Custom Url field. We highly advise you to create a personalized URL for your Saatchi Art profile that includes your name (or public artist name/pseudonym). That way, your address will be easy to both share and remember, and will be easily searchable on the web.IMPORTANT:You can only set your username once. After you've done this, the Custom URL field will no longer be visible on your Account Information page.Should you decide tochangeyour URL, youll have to send an email tothrough this form, letting us know your current URL and what youd like to change it to.

    PROMOTING YOUR PROFILE

To improve your profile and increase your exposure, we recommend that you do all of the following:

    Use Keywords and Improve SEO

Follow our advice on how to use keywords to improve your discoverability in search on Saatchi Art and through search engines like Google.

  • We are excited to presentall-inpricing, a new feature onSaatchi Art.

    What isall-inpricing?

All-inpricingmeans that when a potential collector sees your work on Saatchi Art thepriceshown will include thepriceof the artwork and shipping cost. Currently, we only show collectors thepriceof the artwork and they are informed of the shipping cost when they start to purchase the artwork they are interested in.

    Whyall-inpricingwill be beneficial to artists

We know from our collectors that they would prefer to know the total cost of a purchase, including shipping fees, before they start the process of buying a work. By giving them this information upfront we are confident that we will be able to sell more of your works.

    How does it work?

Saatchi Art has an agreement with our shipping providers for a competitive flat rate shipping cost based on size, weight, and origin of yourparcel.

What do you need to do?

Youdon'tneed to do anything differently! You still need to enter thepriceof the artwork as you would before and we will calculate the shipping cost. We will do this for you so youdon'tneed to do anything. Please keep in mind the cost of packaging materials always need to be factored into yourprice.

What will newall-in shipping look like?

On your artwork detail page thepriceof your artwork will be slightly higher, given this will include the shipping cost. We will also indicate that shipping is included, as you can see below:

With this change, also includes anupdate to the art upload process so that you can see the price of the artwork, your profit and the shipping cost.

We are very excited about these changes as we believe that collectors will respond well to a more streamlined buying experience, which will result in more sales for our highly valued artists.

  • Use a custom crate for artworks such as sculpture, large flat artworks, paintings larger than 48"x48", and fragile items.

If at any time you need help during the packaging process, pleasedon'thesitate to contact us at [email protected] follow the instructions appropriate for your work. For complete instructions, download our complete Packaging Guidelines (which also includes information on the common causes of artwork damage, the proper packing materials, links to additional resources, and more) located at the bottom of this article.

    About Promotional Discounts

If a discount has been applied to your sale, it's because the collector redeemed a special promotional discount while purchasing your work. On occasion, we offer promotional discounts as an incentive for new and returning collectors to explore the constantly updating selection of artwork on our site. We find that offering promotions from time to time allows artists togain the attention of collectors previously unaware of their work anda better chance to make future sales. Please know that this will be a relatively rare occurrence.

It's also important to note that during your initial sign up, you agreed to the following condition (included in our official statement of terms and conditions ).

We thank you for your understanding and for being a part of the Saatchi Art community.

  • For details on how your artwork will ship, please visit the individual artwork page for the pieces you are interested in. Each item ships individually directly from the artist themselves, so it will vary depending upon how the artist plans to ship it. Look for these 3 categories:

    Ships in a cardboard box

This item will ship flat in a sturdy, well-protected cardboard box. We work with our artists every step of the way to ensure artworks are shipped according to our very high standards. Expect your artwork to arrive with plenty of support packaged in to make its journey as safe as possible as it travels from the artists studio to your home.

    Ships in a crate

This item will ship in a wooden crate. Large artworks are shipped in a very sturdy crate that is built for shipping art all around the world. The crate will contain packaging materials that meet our strict guidelines to keep it firmly in place during its journey, and will be tightly sealed together.

    Ships in a tube

This item will arrive rolled in a dent-resistant tube. This method is especially safe for oversized works, and provides lower shipping costs as well.Rolled works can be easily stretched (for canvas works, i.e. placed onto wooden stretcher bars) and/or framed by a local framer upon arrival.Upon immediate delivery, we highly recommend you send any works on paper directly to your framer for cautious, professional unrolling of the artwork.

  • About limited edition printsAs the name suggests, only a limited number of prints can be made available for purchase. For example, if you decide to sell a limited runof 25 prints, once those 25 prints have sold, that limited edition will no longer be available and you cannot sell any more. The exclusive nature of a limited edition print effectively raises its value and, therefore, its price.About open edition printsUnlike limited edition prints, open editionprints may be endlessly reproduced. Because there's no limit to the number of prints that can be made, an open edition print is priced lower than a limited edition print. If you'd like to sell limited edition prints, we require you to supply the prints yourself and to indicate in the title of each print that it is Limited Edition number X [the print number] of X [the total number of prints to be made]. For example: Limited Edition 5 of 25.
