  • Modes present an easy way to control when certain automations are active.

The SmartThings Classic mobile app has three preconfigured Modes:

    Home

    Away

    Night

    What Modes do

Think of Modes as behavior filters for your home. You can change how devices act or behave in your home based on the Mode you are in. For instance:

When in Home Mode, I want a motion sensor to turn on a light.

When in Away Mode, I want the same motion sensor to send me a text message as a security warning and to turn on an alarm.

When in Night Mode, I want that motion sensor to turn on a light and send me a text message.

For nearly every automation, Routine, or SmartApp in SmartThings Classic, you can adjust that configurations settings so it only triggers during a specific Mode. If you like, you can also create a custom mode on graph.api.smartthings.

    How to trigger Modes

Modes are configurable through Routines, and a Routine can be triggered automatically or manually. For instance, the default Goodbye! Routine switches the Mode to Away.

When adding a new Routine, you can customize Mode settings during its setup.

To edit an existing Routines Mode:

    Tap Automations IDE

Under Routines, tap the gear icon in the Routines tile

Tap below Change the Mode to

    Tap the Mode

    Tap Done

How to see which Mode is active

Tap the menu (Android) / More (iOS)

You will see the Mode beneath the selected Location (e.g., Mode is: Home)

How to add or remove a Mode

If you would like to add or remove a Mode, you can do so under My Locations in our .

The difference between Modes and Routines

While the initial lineup of Routines and Modes may seem redundant, Routines and Modes are not always the same.

For instance, you might want to create a personal Routine called "Kids at School," which will turn off the lights in the kids room when they leave for the day, but it will not change the Mode for the entire household to Away.

As another example, a Routine could be used to turn down the thermostat upstairs when no motion is detected after an hour, even though a Mode change is not warranted.

  • To help your Routines in the SmartThings Classic app run more intuitively, there are a couple of default settings in place. We want to make it easy to automate your smart home just the way you wantexactly when you want it!

    Change the mode to

This option changes the Mode of your Location. Modes act as filters for your smart home. You can change how devices act or behave based on the Mode you are in. By default, the following default Routines will change to their correlating Mode.

    Good Morning! triggers Home Mode

    Good Night! triggers Night Mode

    Goodbye! triggers Away Mode

    Im Back! triggers Home Mode

Lets say your lights are set to turn on with motion, and you have a pet dog or cat. You can set your Goodbye! Routine to run when your mobile presence leaves, changing the Mode to Away. Now your lightswon'tturn on when youre away, even with motion from a pet! This can also keep other Routines and automations with a mode filter from running while youre away. Your smart home will sit tight until youre back!

You can edit the mode change at any time in the SmartThings Classic mobile app. Just follow the steps below.

    Tap Automations here

Under Routines, tap the gear icon in the corner of a Routines tile

    Tap Change the mode to

Select the Mode to which the Routine should change

    Tap Done

Tap Done again to save your changes

Dont automatically do this if I am in one of these modes

This option allows you to filter your Routines so that they will not automatically perform in the specific modes you set. By default, Good Morning!, Good Night!, and Goodbye! are set so they will not automatically run in Away Mode. This is meant to limit unnecessary automated actions while you're not at home.

For example, your Good Night! Routine is set to turn your thermostat down at 10 PM, but youre still out with friends. This filter will prevent Good Night! from running when youre not already home, tucked under the covers.

On the other hand,I'mBack! does not have a default mode filter. Without this filter,I'mBack! can fire as many times as you need! Lets say yourI'mBack! Routine is set to turn on your lights when your or your familys mobile presence arrives home. Then your spouse comes home an hour laterthe lights will still come on for them as well, because there is no Mode filter selected.

You can edit this mode filter limitation at any time in the mobile app. Just follow the steps below.

    Tap Automations

Under Routines, tap the gear icon in the corner of a Routines tile

Under Additional settings, tap "Automatically perform"

Under the further Additional settings there, tap Dont automatically do this if I am in one of these modes

Select the mode(s) in which the Routine should not run

    Tap Done

Tap Done again to save your changes

Movie Time and TV as a Thing

If you have a compatible Samsung TV, you can use your TV as a Thing and it can be included in Routines and automations, just like other smart devices. With your TV Thing, you will have another default Routine called Movie Time, as well as some additional defaults to your other Routines.

Movie Time will perform the following actions by default:

    Turn your TV ON

Set the picture and sound modes to Movie

Your other Routines will also anticipate what you want to do with your TV by default.

Good Morning! will set the picture and sound modes to Standard

Good Night! will turn the TV OFF and set the picture and sound modes to Standard

Goodbye! will turn the TV OFF and set the picture and sound modes to Standard

Im Back! will turn the TV ON and set the picture and sound modes to Standard

You can edit these actions at any time in the mobile app. Just follow the steps below.

    Tap Automations

Under Routines, tap the gear icon in the corner of a Routines tile

Tap Turn on/off these lights or switches to configure your TV

Tap Set Samsung TVs modes to configure the picture and sound mode changes

    Tap Done

What happens when a SmartApp is removed from the Marketplace?

When a SmartApp is removed from the Marketplace, you will no longer be able to find the SmartApp in the Marketplace.

If you currently have a SmartApp installed that is being deprecated, you will not lose the SmartApp. However, if you remove it at a later time, you will not be able to re-install it from the Marketplace. In most cases, links to the source code can be found in the tables above so you can self-publish and install the removed SmartApp as a custom SmartApp in the IDE.

Learn more about self-publishing custom SmartApps in " How to self-publish SmartApps in SmartThings " and Publishing Code.

Why are SmartApps being removed from the Marketplace?

The Marketplace contents are periodically evaluated to ensure that the SmartApps contained within are up-to-date, relevant, and easy to find. In most cases, there are alternative means for adding the SmartApp. Additionally, functionality may have been replaced by a different SmartApp. For example, many legacy SmartApps have been rendered obsolete by Smart Lighting.

What if I install and self-publish a SmartApp that has been retired from the Marketplace?

As an open-platform, SmartThings provides methods for self-publishing and installing code. However, as this code has been officially deprecated, the SmartThings Community will best be able to help if you need assistance with debugging issues.

  • These instructions apply to compatible locks. Please check the Works with SmartThings page to ensure your lock is supported by SmartThings.

    Troubleshooting Your Lock

If you're experiencing incorrect states from your lock within the SmartThings app, check the following:

Batteries: Make sure the batteries are not drained and that the lock is responding. If the batteries are dead, the SmartThings app will always report the last known state of the lock.

Range: Your lock may be too far away to send commands to the SmartThings Hub. To confirm whether this is the case, try unlocking or locking the door lock from your SmartThings app to see if it responds. If not, you may need to relocate the Hub or install other Z-Wave devices to extend the range of your network.

Network Connection: Make sure your Hub is plugged in and receiving an internet connection. Additionally, make sure your smartphone has a solid connection so that changes and updates from the Hub can be sent to the phone.

Z-Wave Associations and Secure Inclusion: During the connection process, an extra layer of handshaking between the Hub and the lock occurs. This happens automatically when connecting a lock. If your lock does not correctly report its status, it's likely that it only partially connected or an association (also known as a secure inclusion) failed during the connection process. Remove and reconnect your lock to the SmartThings Hub in order to attempt the association again.

To illustrate: You could create a Bedtime Scene to turn off your bedroom's ceiling lights, turn your night light on, and set its color temperature to warm white. Or, set up a Reading Scene to turn off your living room lights and turn on your reading lamp. You can also set a Wake Up Scene to change the color of your bedroom bulbs and use a Routine to activate the Scene automatically in the morning.

    Scenes and Smart Lights

Smart Lights is a SmartApp that is tailored specifically to creating lighting automations. While Routines are great for automating many different smart devices in your home, Smart Lights focuses specifically on outlets, switches, bulbs and plugs, and features triggers that may not be possible in Routines, such as illuminance and the state of a connected door lock. For example, you may want to configure a Smart Lights automation to activate a Scene that turns off your living room lights and turns on your outside lights when you lock your door.

See our guide to Smart Lights to get started.

    Scenes and Voice Assistants

If you've already added Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to SmartThings and granted blanket permissions, you should be ready to start using your Voice Assistant to activate a Scene!

ActionTiles is the creator of a web-based control panel (or dashboard) for SmartThings. Sign up for an ActionTiles account (with an email address and password not related to your SmartThings account) and connect this to one or more SmartThings Locations and its Things. You can then build any number of distinct Panels with any combination of Thing Tiles, and a few special Tiles like direct video streams, clocks, and web shortcuts. Panels can be securely shared and unshared with other ActionTiles users. • Things

Battery life for your Things varies depending on how you use them. SmartThings' first-party devices (e.g., the Samsung SmartThings Arrival Sensor, Multipurpose Sensor, Water Leak Sensor, etc.)are not rated for outdoor use; using them outside of your home, particularly in harsh weather, can reduce battery life significantly.

Generally speaking, your SmartThings devices' batteries will last anywhere from 6-12 monthsagain, depending on how you use them.

The type and number of batteries required depends on the device. All of SmartThings' devices have batteries included. For more information about a particular SmartThings device and its battery requirements, go here.

    Samsung SmartThings Hub (Hub v2)

The Samsung SmartThings Hub (Hub v2) comes with 4 AA batteries. Once installed, these act as a battery backup that is expected to last up to 10 hours.

Go here for more information about Hub v2, or read this article to determine which Hub you own.

  • GE in-wall devices

If you can't turn your in-wall switch, dimmer, or receptacle on/off manually at the physical switch or button, the device may need to be re-wired. As much as our support team would love to help, we're not electricians and are unequipped to give wiring advice. We recommend having the device professionally installed, but if you're one of those DIY types, please make sure you consult the manufacturer's instructions.

    These instructions apply to:

GE In-Wall Smart Switch (GE 12722)

GE In-Wall Smart Dimmer (GE 12724)

GE In-Wall Smart Toggle Switch (GE 12727)

GE In-Wall Smart Outlet (GE 12721)

GE Direct Wire Smart Switch, 40 AMP (GE 12726)

    GE plug-in modules

The GE plug-in modules and dimmer can be turned on and off manually by pressing the button on the device. Pressing the button will pass power through to any compatible appliance connected to the Z-Wave outlet on the device.

If you cannot control your GE module manually, move it to another outlet.
