Tovala's Frequently Asked Questions page is a central hub where its customers can always go to with their most common questions. These are the 76 most popular questions Tovala receives.
To order Tovala Meals, you do 3 things:
Pick your Tovala Meals
You pick your meals by Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT. These meals will arrive the next week.
If youd rather not pick meals yourself, well pick them for you when you have not paused your meal deliveries or skipped a week of meals. We'll pick meals for you based on which are most popular.
Receive your Tovala Meals
Tovala Meals will arrive the week after you finalize your meals. Depending on where you live, this means receiving meals on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday of the following week.
Youdon'thave to be home when your meals arrive. Your meals will stay fresh in their packaging as long as the ice packs are still frozen and your meals are still cold.
Enjoy!
Let your Tovala do the cooking, and the rest is history (or dinner that night).
While you're selecting meals, here's what we're up to:
Ordering fresh ingredients
We order all the fresh proteins and produce well need to put together your meals.
Preparing meals
Once we receive these fresh ingredients at our meal prep facility, the meal prepping begins. This is a process that involves portioning food, creating marinades, marinating meats, making sauces, and more.

View ArticleHaving trouble connecting your Gen 2 oven to WiFi? Try these troubleshooting tips.
Make sure you are using the most up-to-date version of the Tovala App to set up your oven.
Make sure you have your phone's Bluetooth turned on.
Make sure you entered your WiFi network's password correctly. Typos happen to the best of us!
Make sure you're connecting to a 2.4GHz WiFi network. Your Tovala Oven can only connect to a 2.4GHz network, not a 5GHz network.
Make sure you're within Bluetooth range of your oven. Being within a few feet of your oven is best.
If you do have your phone's Bluetooth on, selected the correct WiFi network, and entered the correct password, then try turning your phone's Bluetooth off and back on again before going through the WiFi setup process.
Trying to connect to a hotspot and not seeing it show up as a WiFi network to connect to?
Turn off and then back on your hotspot.
Unplug then replug your oven and go through the setup process.
This resets things and can sometimes help your oven find your hotspot.
Not sure if your oven has its Bluetooth turned on and is actively searching for a WiFi network to connect to?
Look in the list of suggested devices that shows up and see if one is named Tovala-####. The oven you're trying to sync will show the same "####" on its middle display screen.
If your oven is NOT connected to WiFi, it will always have its Bluetooth turned on and be actively "searching" for a WiFi network.

Scan-to-Cook Groceries FAQ
When will you be making more grocery store foods available to cook via barcode?
We're actively working on adding more to our database. We'll release more in the near future.
What are the benefits of cooking via barcode in the Tovala Oven?
We make cooking grocery store foods more convenient, eliminate preheating, and improve how your food cooks. The Tovala Oven can automatically switch between multiple cooking modes and temperatures to cook your food better than any other oven would.
When I cook grocery store foods via barcode, can I ignore all the cooking instructions on the packaging?
You can ignore the instructions that specify preheating, temperature, cook time, and oven rack location (cook on the center rack, etc.). However, for the best results, you should still follow any action instructions, including instructions for removing or puncturing film, flipping, stirring, rotating, etc.
Does the Tovala Oven always use multiple cooking modes and/or steam when it cooks via barcode scan?
Our chefs figure out what works best for each food. Sometimes that means using multiple cooking modes and/or including the oven's Steam mode, and sometimes it doesn't.
View ArticleBefore you get cooking
Read each meals instructions
Each meals packaging has unique instructions for how to prepare it. Every time you make a meal, youll want to read its instructions so it comes out as delicious as possible!
Keep meals in the fridge (or freezer, if need be)
Once you unpack your meals, store them in the fridge. Theyre made with fresh ingredients and at their best when stored in the fridge. However, you can freeze them before their Enjoy Before date if youre unable to finish them sooner. Just thaw them completely before cooking by transferring them to the fridge the night before you plan to eat them.
Make sure your oven rack is in the lowest rack position
When cooking Tovala Meals, your oven rack should always be in the lowest rack position with the curved edges facing down.
Cook meals of the same kind at the same time
When you have multiple of the same meal, you can cook them at the same time. For example, a Chicken Parmesan can cook with another Chicken Parmesan, but youcan'tcook a Chicken Parmesan with a Miso-Glazed Salmon. Four trays total fit into your oven.
Recycle all packaging.
All meals come in 100% recyclable packaging. This includes the aluminum trays the main components of your meals come in. Please rinse and recycle these trays, or clean and reuse them.
Ready to cook?
Step 1: Prepare your meal
Check the Enjoy Before date on your meals packaging to make sure its still safe to eat, and follow the instructions on your meal. (Please note, that the "Enjoy Before" date means we recommend consuming the meals before the date stated on your meal)
Always take the plastic film off the aluminum trays before cooking. If your meal has two trays, put them both into your oven at the same time.
Your oven comes with a sheet tray, but no need to use it when you cook Tovala Meals. Just put your trays directly on the oven rack.
Step 2: Scan the barcode
In Gen 1:Press the control knob on the front of your oven (the big black knob). This will wake up your barcode scanner.A red light will appear and indicate where to line up the barcode. Hold it 3 to 4 inches below the scanner. When your oven successfully scans, it will beep and display a cook time. Press the knob to start cooking.
In Gen 2: Press the Scan button to activate your ovens scanner. A red light will appear and indicate where to line up the barcode. Hold it 3 to 4 inches below the scanner. When your oven successfully scans, it will beep and display a cook time. Press the "Start" button to start cooking.
Note: You only need to scan the barcode once for a Tovala Meal, even if youre cooking multiple of that meal at the same time.
Step 3: Press the Start button
Onceyou'vescanned the barcode, press the Start button. And then get excited!
Step 4: Keep the door closed
You should keep your ovens door closed while your food is cooking. Opening the door will lower the oven temperature and might affect how your meal cooks.
Almost done!
Take out your meal with an oven mitt
When you grab the trays out of your oven, be sure to use an oven mitt. The trays and the inside of your oven itself will be hot, so be careful!
Plate and enjoy!
Check your meals instructions for how to plate and garnish your meal, and then dive in! Dinner is served.
View ArticleCooking with steam is one of the huge benefits of the Tovala. Steam rocks! Here are some things to know about having steam cooking capabilities in your Steam Oven...
What is coming out of the back of my Tovala?
Thats steam! Its what keeps your chicken juicy, your broccoli cooked through, and your salmon perfect.
Give your Tovala 2 inches of clearance between the steam and cabinets. If you notice condensation on your cabinets, wipe it off.
Is it normal for water to be dripping into the chamber while cooking?
Yes. Thats just water that hasnt turned into steam yet. Totally normal!
There's water in the bottom of my Tovala...
That's condensation in the oven and is totally normal.
You can wipe it up or it should evaporate
Water reservoir
This gives the oven steam. Make sure it's at least 1/3 full when cooking.
Water in the drip tray
This is the tray that slides under the front of the Tovala. It collects water that condenses from steam.
Check it and empty it periodically.
Pro Tip: When you'reonly cooking with steam...
When youre using only the Steam cooking method to cook something, use a perforated container like a cooling rack or colander so that water doesnt pool on the bottom of the container.

View ArticleAm I stuck staying on the Tovala Meal meal plan?
Not at all! You can skip a week, pause, or cancel your meal plan at any time!
Will I get penalized for pausing or canceling?
No more than just missing out on some great meals!
What's the difference between pausing and skipping?
Pausing = stopping your weekly meal deliveries indefinitely
You can unpause your meal plan when youre ready. This option is only available to customers who did not purchase a Tovala Steam Oven with a meal commitment.
Skipping a week = exactly what it sounds like
You won't receive meals for the week you choose to skip and then your meal plan will become active again on its own the week after your "skipped week".No action is required on your endto start receiving meals again.
This is not a way to indefinitely stop receiving meals.
What does it mean to cancel?
When you cancel, we remove you from our active customers list, delete knowledge of which meal plan you were on, and stop contacting you about upcoming meals.
How do I skip, pause, and/or cancel?

View ArticleRegular Maintenance
After every use, we recommend cleaning the interior of your oven. Wait until your oven interior has cooled completely and is safe to touch, unplug your oven, then wipe down the interior walls with a soft, damp cloth. Dampen the cloth with a solution of mild soap and water.
Running several cook cycles without cleaning your oven may result in permanent blemishes to the interior.
DO NOT clean your oven with metal scouring pads. See cleaning instructions below for further details.
Before you start cleaning, make sure your oven is unplugged and cooled completely and safe to touch. Use the following instructions for more complete cleaning:
Cleaning the exterior
The outside body of your oven can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. We recommend using a solution of mild soap and water to dampen the cloth.
Cleaning the door
The inside and outside of the door can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. Dampen the cloth with a solution of mild soap and water.
DO NOT use harsh, abrasive cleaners or scrapers to clean the doors glass, as this may lead to scratches or other damage.
Cleaning the crumb tray
Remove the crumb tray and dispose of crumbs/food particles into the trash.
Then, wipe down the crumb tray with a soft, damp cloth. We recommend using a solution of mild soap and water to dampen.
When the crumb tray is completely dry, slide it into the bottom of your oven. Cooking performance could be altered if you cook without the crumb tray present.
Cleaning the control panel
The control panel should be wiped down with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water. Wring out your cloth before wiping down to ensure the cloth is not excessively wet.
Cleaning the drain tray (which slides into the bottom of your oven)
Empty the drain tray after every use of your oven. The drain tray can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. Dampen the cloth with a solution of mild soap and water.
Descaling (a.k.a. Giving your Gen 2 Tovala Oven a deep clean!)
If you use your oven once a day or less, we recommend descaling your oven every 6 months.
If you live in an area with hard water or use your oven more than twice a day, we recommend conducting this descaling procedure more frequently.
How to descale your Tovala Oven (Gen 2)
Make sure your oven is in a well-ventilated space, free from any overhanging cabinets or other nearby overhead obstructions. If needed, move it to a place that is unobstructed overhead.
Empty the oven of water.
Empty the drain tray (located in the front of your oven underneath the oven door) of any water, then replace the drain tray underneath your oven door.
Then, hold the Steam button down for 5 seconds to DRAIN the water reservoir. The reservoir will drain automatically and beep when empty. Note: The oven can take up to 15 minutes to drain.
The reservoir is designed to drain into the drain tray underneath your oven door. Be sure to empty any water from the drain tray both BEFORE and AFTER draining.
If the water reservoir is completely full, you may need to empty your drain tray multiple times to remove water. Be prepared to remove it, dispose of water, and replace it multiple times as your oven empties.
Fill the water reservoir with 4 oz of filtered water and 4 oz of distilled white vinegar.
Set your oven to the following cook cycle, using the Tovala App (Note: A strong vinegar smell will be present throughout this cycle.):
5 minutes of Bake at 400F

Wipe up any excess water in your oven with a soft cloth.
Finally, run the same cook cycle as before:
Allow your oven to cool until its safe to touch, then wipe up excess water inside your oven with a soft cloth.
If any limescale is deposited into your ovens interior or drain tray, gently wipe it away with a soft cloth dampened with vinegar.

Power usage
Similar to your oven, coffee-maker and microwave, the Tovala draws around 15 amps of power at themost.
Give it its own outlet

The Tovala should be the only device running on a given circuit when its on, otherwise it could trip your breaker
No extension cord
Plug the Tovala directly into the outlet (and not into an extension cord or power strip).

Cover it in aluminum foil for less mess and better results.
The aluminum trays that Tovala Meal components come in.
Clean them and reuse them! They're great for heating up pasta, stews, and more!
Heating Guidelines
Why reheat my food in the Tovala, rather than the microwave?
For starters, the Tovala is a countertop steam oven, so that means heating up food in your Tovala is very similar to heating up food in your regular oven, except a lot faster and with the addition of steam. Your Tovala combines steaming, convection baking and broiling for impressive (and not soggy!) results.
What is the Heat button actually doing?
The default cook cycle is 9 minutes and 15 seconds.
This cook cycle is composed of:
Broil at 450F for 1:30
Steam at 450F for 1:15
Bake at 400F for 5:00
Broil at 475F for 1:30
For cycles shorter than 9:15, it reduces the times for each cooking method proportionally.
For cycles longer than 9:15, only the Bake timeis increased.

Can you explain the Tovala's three cooking modes a little more?
With the Tovala, you canSteam, Bake, andBroil.
Temperatures for Steam and Bake range between 200F-500F.
With Broil, you can't set the oven below 400F because to properly broil, the top coil of the oven has to get really hot.
You can choose from a wide range of times for each cooking mode.
Cooking Mode: Steam
This mode injects steam into your oven during convection baking.
Adding steam preserves your foods moisture or adds it back in.
You set the temperature of your oven chamber.
Cooking Mode: Convection Bake
Follow recommended oven temperatures and cook times.
This mode uses the top and bottom heat coils and convection fan.
The convection fan gives you a more even bake!
Cooking Mode: Broil
This mode uses intense heat from the top heat coil to brown your food.
FOR iOS:No need to set a temperature. Broil on high does the trick.
For Android: Choose between a temperature of 400F-500F.
Its powerful! Keep an eye on your food if using 2+ minutes of broil.

View ArticleHere are some common questions we've gotten about the Tovala and connecting it to WiFi.
If I want to use multiple devices to control my Steam Oven (a tablet and a phone, multiple phones, etc.), don't I need to sync all of them to myTovala?
Nope! You only need to sync once because your phone is just sharingWifi log-in information with your Tovala during the syncing process. As soon as you have successfully synced your Tovala to awireless network (signaled by the Tovala WiFi indicator turningsolid green), then it's ready to be controlled by any number of devices logged into the same account.
To control your Tovala with multiple devices, just have all users sign into one common Tovala account.
What do I do if I need to connect my Tovala to a WiFi network that's different than the one it's currently on?
You'll have to re-sync your Tovala. Before you do this, make sure your phone is on the new WiFi network you're trying to connect your Tovala to.
When you're ready to re-sync, gointo the Tovala App and clickSettings > Your Oven > Reset WiFi. Then followthe instructions to re-sync.
Does my phone need to be on the same network as my Steam Oven?
No, your Tovala doesn't need to be on the same WiFi as your phone for the app to control/monitor your Tovala. Your phone could be using cellular data and still do the job.
HOWEVER, when you're syncing your Tovala to WiFi, your phone must be connected to the WiFi network you're trying to sync to.
What exactly is the syncing process?
The syncing process tells your Tovala which wireless network it belongs to. This only needs to be done successfully once, unless you need to connect your Tovala to a new WiFi network (see above). Then it knows which wireless network and Tovala App account it is associated with and can be controlled by that account.
