  • While ZIP codes made mail sorting easier, there’s still room for error when it comes to sloppy handwriting. Illegible letters forego the sorting machines and go straight into the hands of professional handwriting gurus, called Nixie clerks. If this last line of defense can’t decipher an address, the mail ends up in the “dead letter office,” meaning it has a date with the office shredder.

  • We’ve come a long way from using telephone operators, snail mail, and homing pigeons for communication but true to form, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Patented in London in 1932, The Notificator was stationed at train stations as way for people to change plans without leaving their friends in the lurch. After dropping a coin in the slot, the “user” would write a brief message on a strip of paper behind a glass panel. This message remained in public view for at least two hours, no cell phone plan or Twitter handle required.

  • The world’s largest fortune cookie manufacturer is located in New York. With all those fortunes, one pictures rows of prophesying writers, tapping out our futures on typewriters. However, starting in the early ‘80s, just one writer was hired to jot down our post-dinner predictions. They’ve since added to their staff, but Confucius says we owe a debt of gratitude to the original cookie crusader.

  • This one comes from a website called Know Your Phrase (www.knowyourphrase.com)

"Never look a gift horse in the mouth! Wait, why would I not want to do that? Well, think of it this way: if someone was polite enough to give you your very own horse as a gift, would you then inspect the animal to see if it's of good quality, especially when the person who gave the horse to you is standing right there next to you? Probably not, because that might be seen as very rude behavior.

Apparently, though, there were people who would inspect the horse, particularly the mouth region, in order to determine the horses age. Yeah, you can do that. The length of a horses teeth can be used as an indicator for their age; the longer the teeth, the older the horse."

    How Stuff Works

  • Quoted from the How Stuff Works website (www.howstuffworks.com)

The U.S. national bird, known for its dramatic wingspan of up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) and its 200 mph (320 kph) flight speed, has another superlative ability: nest building.

Bald eagles, like most other birds, build their nests in trees. Unlike most other birds, bald eagles build nests that can break those trees.

A typical bald eagle nest is big: up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) in diameter and up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) deep. But that's nothing compared to the largest nest ever discovered. One found in Florida in the 1960s had a weight of more than 2.2 tons (2 metric tons), a diameter of 9.6 feet (2.9 meters), and a depth of 20 feet (6 meters). Another that fell out of a tree in Ohio in the 1920s was 8.5 feet (2.6 meters) across, 12 feet (3.6 meters) deep, and weighed about 2 tons (1.8 metric tons).

How does a pair of birds build a nest that massive? Slowly. Bald eagles use the same nest year after year, sometimes for decades, and they're constantly adding twigs, branches, moss, feathers and other nesting material. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources estimates that bald eagles, likely more than one mating pair over time, had been building and living in that 2-ton Ohio nest for about 35 years before it fell.

  • Picasso had a dachshund muse. Lump, named after the German word for “rascal”, lived in the artist’s Cannes mansion for six years. In addition to painting Lump his own food dish, Picasso featured him in 15 of his “Meninas” series paintings. When asked about Lump, he replied, “Lump, he’s not a dog, he’s not a little man, he’s somebody else.” And that’s the long and short of it.

Before modern medical science discovered the intricacies of the circulatory system, people believed that the third finger on the left hand was the most direct line to the heart. In Ancient Rome, this line was called the “Vena Amoris,” or the “Vein of Love.”

  • Uncommon Perks:

In October 2018 we launched our first-ever membership program. With our Perks program, customers will receive free Standard (3-5 business day) shipping to any US address (including Alaska and Hawaii) for$14.90 a year. You canlearn more about Perks here, or you canask anyof our team members for details.

    Sales:

We frequently add new items to our Sale section, and these items are discounted between 10\% and 70\% off of the original price.

    Coupons:

Coupon sites will sometimes post discount codes for UncommonGoods, but we are not running any promotions or discounts.Since we can’t control what people post on the Internet, we rely on our marketing team and on our customers to notify us of websites that are falsely advertising discount codes. We then ask the source to remove those fraudulent codes from their website. If you have found such a code online, please email [email protected] with a link to the website, and you'll earn our heartfelt thanks for helping us curb this problem. Note that the Source Codes on the back of our catalogs do not provide discounts and are merely for tracking purposes for our marketing team.

In a marketplace overrun by mass-produced goods, UncommonGoods was founded on the idea that we would opt to sell as many handmade, unique, and one-of-a-kind items as possible. We love that our customers crave unique and well-crafted merchandise that can't be found at huge retailers who offer deep discounts by buying in bulk. We're also proud that more than half of the items we sell are made in the USA and a large number of items made overseas are supporting communities in developing countries. It’s also important to us to hire locally and we insist on paying our team members a living wage, not merely the minimum wage. This also means that the person taking your phone call, answering your emails, selecting products for our website, designing our website, and shipping your order lives here in the NYC metro area.

    Free shipping:

As a business specializing in one-of-a-kind, hand-made merchandise, we don’t offer site-wide promotions or discounts. So while we don't offer free shipping, we hope that we’re still your go-to source when you're looking for a perfect handmade gift for that special someone in your life. What sets UncommonGoods apart from the larger retailers out there is the quality and uniqueness of the items we sell and the way we treat our customers.

  • We value your safety.

We work hard to make sure that the product you purchase from us is safe to handle. We make sure that the product we carry is lead-free, or is in a form that won't be harmful to you or your family.

    Baby and children's products:

None of our baby or children's products contain lead. We obtain certification of this from our individual vendors, and we perform independent lab testing to ensure our vendors' claims are valid.

    Glassware:

In compliance with all federal and state safety regulations including California'sProposition65, we use lead-free inks for printing on all our drinkware items. Lead-free inks are slightly less durable in a dishwasher, which is why we recommend hand-washing for these glasses.

    Recycled metal products:

While the vast majority of our recycled products are lead-free, some of our wall art or wearable art may contain trace levels of lead. Because of the scarcity of the mineral and the way that the product is used (not for food consumption or directly on your skin), we may opt to sell some products with trace levels of lead. When these items ship to California, they will arrive with a warning regarding lead content.

Stadium Seat items:we are required to have the disclaimer that the paint used on the old stadium seats could contain lead. This is in compliance with CaliforniaProposition65. These items are made with salvaged one-of-a-kind materials, so we could not verify the exact composition of all of the materials used.

  • Reselling:

We've worked really hard to build our brand through lots of hard work, dedication, amazing artist partnerships, and a sprinkle of good luck. Our brand is everything to us. Without it, we'd be "common goods," which is far less clever. For this reason, we won't sell ourmerchandise to resellers. We also don't allow our images or copy to be used on other retail sites.

    Dropship:

We work with a handful of artists whose work is shipped directly from the artist to our customer. This is the only dropshipping that we participate in. We're very careful when selecting vendors and artists to work with, and each of our partners has to abide by our Vendor Code of Conduct.

  • Our Guiding Principles

What makes a workplace great? Your knee-jerk response might focus on salary and benefits, but we all know it’s more than that. Do you feel challenged? Are you encouraged to grow? Do you have a say in your company’s direction? Do you feel like it’s your company? Do you like your co-workers? We’ve had the goal of being a great place to work for a long time, but that can mean different things to different people. We realized that in order to actually make it happen and in turn become a stronger, more impactful business, we had to figure out what a “great place to work” meant to us.

Through discussions with our leadership, work with our human resources team and a trusted advisor, looking at the practices of businesses we admire, and a lot of feedback from team members across the company, we put who we want to be as an organization into words with our seven Guiding Principles.

Each of our Principles helps us define what we’re working to be as a company, and what we want to mean to the people who work here. In short, they’re a set of guidelines to keep us all moving in the same direction. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be differences of opinion expressed. In fact, the Principles are set up to empower folks around here to do just that.

We know that becoming a great place to work is like scaling a never-ending mountain, always striving to get closer to the peak and recognizing there’s continued room for growth. We’re working on building a shared understanding of how we can work together and what’s important to us as an organization, and that’s helping us move up that mountainside.

As we climb, we’re following these seven Guiding Principles:

    [email protected]

    Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

We are an Internet and catalog company, and we understand that by producing a catalog we use the earth's resources. We try our best to minimize that impact by shifting more business online, limiting how many catalogs we mail, and printing our catalogs on either recycled paper (virtually all of which is from 30\% post-consumer waste) or paper sourced from FSC certified forests (which are harvested in a sustainable manner).

    Better To Give

Giving back is important to us and we want to share this passion with our customers. That's why we created the Better to Give Program in 2001, which allows you to select a non-profit organization to receive a $1 donation from us at checkout. Learn more here.

    B Corporation

UncommonGoods is proud to be a founding member of B Corporation, an organization created to help customers understand the social and environmental impact of their purchases. The B seal means that a company has met the standards outlined in a comprehensive screening questionnaire, which evaluates a company on issues ranging from providing a living wage to lessening their impact on the environment, to giving back to the community.

As the founder of UncommonGoods, I am committed to our sustainability effort and would welcome you to send any ideas you have to [email protected].

    Thank you,

    Dave Bolotsky, Founder and CEO

  • Our Story

We offer remarkable designs by independent makers, and our goal is to do it with a positive impact on both people and our planet.

    [email protected]

    Inspiration

In 1999, our founder Dave Bolotsky visited a Smithsonian Museum craft show in Washington D.C. and was captivated by the variety of unique handmade goods and the talented people behind them. He saw there was a significant public demand for beautiful design. At the same time, he realized that the artists working to make those pieces were often traveling great distances in order to sell their wares at the show. Inspired by his experience, Dave had a vision to create something that had never existed beforean online marketplace to connect makers and their creations with individuals looking for truly special goods, regardless of the physical distance between the maker and the shopper. Dave turned this idea into UncommonGoods. He continued traveling to craft fairs and trade shows, meeting artists and finding stand-out merchandise, while running the business out of his home on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Before long, the company had outgrown Dave's apartment, and moved through three successively larger offices in downtown Manhattan, eventually settling in our current location in Brooklyn, NY.

    Survival

Of course, in the struggle to build a viable business, there are always bumps in the road along the way. When the internet bubble burst, we faced unforeseen hardshipsfunds were dwindling, and we were forced to cut back from a staff of 35 to just five full-time employees. Around this time co-founder Thomas Epting joined us as a photographer. Thomas worked tirelessly to help ensure the company's survival, steadily expanding his role to encompass all creative, technology, and warehouse operations. Times were tough, but thanks to the guidance of Dave and Thomas, we managed to turn the business around, becoming profitable for the first time in 2004.

    Sustainability

Our focus is on building a business for the long haul. We've worked to create a sustainable business in all its aspects. We attempt to minimize our environmental impact, working with our artists to use sustainable or recycled materials whenever possible, choosing environmentally friendlier packing materials, and printing our catalog on Forest Stewardship Council [FSC] certified and recycled paper. We're building relationships with non-profit organizations through Better to Give, a program we created that allows our customers to choose a partner for us to donate $1 to with every order. And a concentration on strong financial health allows us to maintain independent ownership and stay true to our values. Our team has grown steadily over the last decade, from just 5 to over 200 year-round employees. Our business grows dramatically during the winter holidays each year. Thousands of packages ship out every day during these months, so we expand our workforce to hundreds of employees. We try to never lose sight of an inverted pyramid business model, meaning that the needs of the people closest to our customers, our customer service and warehouse teams, come first. As part of this model, our lowest paid hourly seasonal worker makes 100\% more than the federal minimum wage. https://www.uncommongoods.com/blog/2017/uncommon-values-our-guiding-principles/

    B Corporation

We're still growing, but what's important to us hasn't changed. Sustainability is, and has always been, central to what we do. In 2007, we became a founding B Corporation, which established an independent third-party certification of a company's sustainability. The Certified B Corporation seal means that a company has undergone and passed a comprehensive screening questionnaire, which evaluates areas including company governance, environmental practices, and impacts on the local community. As we maintain our certification as a B Corp we're also driven to continuously evaluate and improve ourselves, while raising awareness of the program. To date, more than 2,000 companies have become certified B corps. https://www.bcorporation.net/community/uncommongoods

    Evolution

Along with sustainability, supporting creativity and the artist community is extremely important to us. Today our assortment has grown from a collection of Dave's trade show finds to a plethora of products handpicked by a full-fledged buying team, who scour the web for the latest in creative design and, just like in our early days, hit the road to bring back treasures from around the country. Thanks to our community of artists and designers, we also discover many unique pieces through online product submissions. Additionally, we've grown an in-house product development team, who work hard to create new goods sure to make even seasoned design junkies swoon. https://www.uncommongoods.com/lists/uncommon-collection

    An Uncommon Future

As we enter a new age of business, we'll remain focused on our commitment to sustainability and creative design. We'll never stop working to provide a remarkable shopping experience to our customers, make our company our team members' favorite place to work, celebrate craftsmanship and innovation, and support our community of artisans, designers, and creative thinkers. We have a feeling the future will be uncommonly good. https://www.uncommongoods.com/our-story

    You Shop, We Give.

As an independently-owned business, we have the freedom to support causes we believe in and to impact the world in a positive way. Giving back is important to us and we want to share that passion with you, our customers. Through our Better to Give program, we've been able to build a better business by connecting our customers with non-profit organizations around the globe. With every purchase you make, we're proud to donate $1 to a Better to Give partner of your choice.

Since we started the Better to Give program in 2001, we've donated over $2,000,000. Thanks for helping us pay it forward and do our part to improve the planet and support the people who live on it. Let's keep up the good work! https://www.uncommongoods.com/static/better.jsp
