Executive Bio

Dr. Burt Kaliski Jr. serves as Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President at VeriSign, Inc. Dr. Kaliski is responsible for developing the long-term technology vision at VeriSign. He is the leader of Verisign Labs, which focuses on applied research, university collaboration, industry thought leadership and intellectual property strategy. He also facilitates the technical community within Verisign. Prior to joining Verisign in 2011, he served as the founding director of the EMC Innovation Network, the global collaboration among EMC's research and advanced technology groups and its university partners. Dr. Kaliski served as Head of Innovation Network of EMC Corp., since May 7, 2007. He served as Chief Scientist and Vice President of research of RSA Security. He is one of the world's foremost experts on classical cryptography. He joined RSA Data Security when it was a startup in 1989 and in 1991 helped launch RSA Laboratories as an academic environment within RSA Data Security. Dr. Kaliski has also been involved extensively in the development of cryptographic standards. During the early days of RSA Laboratories, he coordinated the development of the Public-Key Cryptography Standards, working with major early adopters of public-key cryptography. Dr. Kaliski has been a Member of Advisory Board of Magiq Technologies, Inc., since May 2006. Dr. Kaliski served as Director of RSA Laboratories. From 1993 to 1999, he served as chair of the IEEE working group that developed the IEEE 1363-2000 standard, which covered the three main families of public-key cryptography. Since 1999, he has been the editor of the IEEE P1363a amendment and is the editor of ANSI X9.44, the emerging banking standard for key establishment based on the RSA cryptosystem. He has also authored several Internet RFCs. Dr. Kaliski's research has included public-key cryptography, efficient implementation of cryptographic algorithms, block cipher cryptanalysis, elliptic curve cryptography, user authentication and privacy protection. He is an inventor on eight patents with several others pending. He has held appointments as a guest professor at Wuhan University's College of Computer Science and as a guest professor and member of the international advisory board of Peking University's School of Software and Microelectronics. He has also taught at Stanford University and Rochester Institute of Technology. Dr. Kaliski is a member of the IEEE Computer Society and the International Association for Cryptologic Research. Dr. Kaliski holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science and engineering, Master of Science in electrical engineering and computer science and doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his research focused on cryptography.
