We reserve the right to change these TOUs from time to time. Users of the Site are advised to please refer back to these TOUs periodically to review any changes we may make from time to time. Users of Products will be notified with the TOUs being displayed on-screen or with a link to the updated TOUs when you next start the Software or download new Licensed Content, although no such changes will apply retrospectively. You warrant to us that you have the authority to enter into an agreement with us on the terms of these TOUs.

These TOUs were last updated on May 16, 2018.

    License and Use

We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to access the Site and any Product for your personal use only. Any commercial use, use in violation of these TOUs, or use for data collection and/or profit is not allowed.

Additional terms may also apply to certain features, parts or content of the Site and, where they apply, will be displayed on-screen or accessible via a link ("Other Terms").

    You remain responsible for:

    all of your activity on and in connection with the Site and/or Product;

    all of the content and details that you submit into, or post onto, the Site or any Product ("Your Content");

Access to the Site and Products

Products may only be downloaded, accessed and used on a computer or other device owned or controlled by you and running the relevant operating system for which the Product concerned was designed, so you must make sure you have a compatible device which meets all the necessary technical specifications to enable you to download any Product you wish to download and to access and use each downloaded Product.

You will be assumed to have obtained permission from the owner of any computer or other device that is controlled, but not owned, by you to download any Product to that device. You accept responsibility, in accordance with these TOUs, for all access to, and use of, any Product by you on any device, whether or not it is owned by you.

Specific service level agreements between VitalSource and an institution or other business entity may be a part of another agreement, and such an SLA would not be bound by this paragraph.

The relevant download will be made available immediately when payment is authorized or you enter a valid code and you acknowledge that this is the case and that, therefore, you will have no right to change your mind (sometimes known as a ‘cooling off’ right) once the download has started.

Where you pay to download any paid-for Licensed Content, we warrant that it will, when downloaded, substantially comply with the description provided by us at the point of download and that any services we provide through it will be provided with reasonable care and skill.

How to change the Voice Type or Speed

    Windows 8/8.1/10

    For Bookshelf 7.6

Go to Control Panel > Ease of Access > Speech Recognition

Click on Text to Speech in the left-hand side of the window

You have three choices for Text to Speech: Microsoft David, Microsoft Hazel, and Microsoft Zira. Select one of these voices (there are only two options in Windows 10)

  • What eBook format do you provide?

There are two different types of electronic textbooks sold in the VitalSource Bookstore: Reflowable Text VitalBooks (ePubs) and Page-Fidelity VitalBooks (PDF).

    Reflowable eTextbook (ePub)

Reflowable textbooks (ePub) do not maintain the layout of a traditional bound book. The text is responsive, so the font size can be easily adjusted no matter the size of the screen. These books conform to ePub 3 industry standards.

Re-flowable text:Adjusts the quantity of text to fit the size of the screen

Videos: Can play videos if in the book (Videos can be baked in or have links). Note: Similar to PDF versions; the icon may also be a reference to the video.

Links / Quizzes: May include links to external websites, may also include interactive quizzes, videos, etc.

Page Layout:In the offline app (Windows/Mac) you can change the page view to one of the following: Browser View, Reading View. In Online Bookshelf it will scroll the entire section (or sub-section, depending on the Table of Contents setup) on one page.

Page Numbers: ePub guidelines are industry standard and do not require page numbers. If page numbers are missing Bookshelf will not print.

Print Limits: You can only print within sections in the Table of Contents (i.e., over the blue bar, or sometimes even sub-sections) even if within the print restriction limit.

    Zoom: Can increase font size.

Font / Background Colors: These cannot be changed.

    Printing Errors:

No Print Icon: This means there are no page numbers in the book. Use the offline Bookshelf app (Windows/Mac). See "Page Numbers" above.

Invalid Page Number: If an error appears that the page number is invalid when trying to print, use the offline Bookshelf app (Windows/Mac) to print.

    Fixed Page eTextbook (PDF)

The Page-Fidelity (PDF) textbook maintains the look and feels of a bound bookthe text is fixed, and the screen size determines the size of the text.

Non-Reflowable Text:Formatted exactly like the print book and will not change based on your screen size.Behaves similar to aPDF, it is DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected.

Videos: Video icons are just indications of where you should go to cd/website (Cannot click)

Links / Quizzes: May include links to external websites, but will not include interactive quizzes, videos, etc.

Page Layout: In the offline app (Windows/Mac) you can change the page view to one of the following: Continuous View, Single Page, Facing Pages

Zoom: Can zoom in, but not increase font size.

Print Limits: Can print any range of pages that coincide with the print restrictions from the publisher.

Font / Background Colors: These cannot be changed because the book mimics the print version.

  • Question

    Answer

I am dropping files into Upload but I don't see them on the table.

Your files may not be of a supported filetype. Upload only supports PDF and ePub files for content, and XLS and XLSX files for metadata.

Additionally, your files may be too large for Upload to handle. Upload will only support files up to 1.25GB. For more information, contact your customer success manager, or see the section below, Resolving Common Errors.

I can't find my VBID when I type it into the search box.

Upload is unable to find the VBID specified. There may be a few reasons for this:

The VBID entered was not found in your catalog. Only VBIDs belonging to your company will be available for you to select. The VBID may be valid but belongs to another company.Alternatively, if you are searching for a VBID you just created via spreadsheet ingestion, it may take time to show up in your catalog.

The VBID does not exist yet. If this was a VBID you have not yet created, please submit a metadata template for it before trying to associate a source file to the VBID.

My VBID has been marked with a red exclamation icon.

A VBID was found for this file, but other circumstances will prevent you from submitting this file. There may be a few reasons for this:

The File Type and VBK Format do not match - PDF files can only be submitted to PDF VBIDs, and ePubs to ePub.

The VBK Format may be locked - PBK and DashML titles still exist in our inventory, but are prevented from accepting new source files. If you wish to update these records with a new source, you must first create a new VBID.

The VBID may be out of distribution - the VBK type will display Unknown in this case. Double check the Manage record to see this record's distribution status.

My VBID is marked with a yellow caution icon.

Upload is unable to find the VBID specified. There may be a few reasons for this:

Your file is named incorrectly. Upload will initially try to use the filename as the VBID. Double-check your file is named properly. If you do not wish to use your filename as the VBID, click the X button and type in your own.

The VBID entered was not found in your catalog. Only VBIDs belonging to your company will be available for you to select. The VBID may be valid but belongs to another company. Alternatively, if you are searching for a VBID you just created via spreadsheet ingestion, it may take time to show up in your catalog.

The VBID does not exist yet. If this was a VBID you have not yet created, please submit a metadata template for it before trying to associate a source file to the VBID.

Clicking the caution icon will attempt to associate your search term with an existing VBID. If found, the icon will switch to a green check.

My VBK type is showing up with red lettering.

My VBK type is Unknown but a VBID was associated in the search box.

A VBID was found for this file, but other circumstances will prevent you from submitting this file. Normally, Unknown is reserved for when there is no VBID in the search box. However, this VBID may be out of distribution or in limited distribution. Double check the Manage record to see this record's distribution status.

The only option I have in the Action dropdown is Ignore.

Only files with valid VBID associations are allowed to be submitted. If the VBID is out of distribution, is one of our locked VBK formats, or if the VBK Format and File Type do not match, no other actions will be available.

You can leave this row set to Ignore, or remove it from the table using the Delete button.

What happens to files I set to Ignore, remove from the table, or are removed during the Upload process?

Don't worry, your files are still on your computer. Upload does not transfer any of your files (with the exception of metadata templates) until you click the Upload button. Simply drop your files onto the table again if you wish to upload them.

Why do I need to click the checkbox to select a file for upload? Why can't I simply drop files and hit Submit?

Accidentally uploading the wrong file to a VBID can have big effects on both your catalog and users of the problem title. In order to decrease the likelihood of error, we require users to click the checkbox after verifying their file associations and chosen actions. The checkbox acts as a user's final sign-off that all the information in the table is correct.

Why is the maximum number of files so low?

Uploading through a web browser is generally slower than other file transfer methods, and has a higher likelihood of connection interruptions. To provide a smoother experience, we have limited the number of files a user can upload at once time to ensure that all files are uploaded successfully.

Why is the maximum supported filesize so low?

Uploading through a web browser is generally slower than other file transfer methods, and has a higher likelihood of connection interruptions. To provide a smoother experience, we have limited the size of individual files to one that is manageable for both the user uploading and that user's internet connection.

Additionally, over-large files translate to a poor user experience, especially on mobile devices with slow wireless connections and limited storage space. The end user experience always factors into decisions like these, and having a single title taking up much more than 1GB on a user's machine isn't in the user's best interest.

If you are having trouble reducing the size of your files to comply with this guideline, please contact your customer success manager for assistance, or see the section below, Resolving Common Errors.

Why is there no Select All button?

Accidentally uploading the wrong file to a VBID can have big effects on both your catalog and users of the problem title. In order to decrease the likelihood of error, we require users to sign off on each row individually, by clicking the checkbox after verifying their file associations and chosen actions.

  • Bookshelf for iOS' Library is getting a new look!

VitalSource is excited to announce improvements to Bookshelf for iOS' Library. These changes will help to streamline the way you interact with your content while on the go. As a platform dedicated to student-centric learning, we strive to continually improve Bookshelf to assist students in their comprehension of course materials.

    What’s New?

For ease of use, we have the most recent title now more prominently displayed. Previously, this would have been the first book in your bookshelf, but it wasn’t explicitly called out. We added this feature to help our users easily jump back into their reading without any distractions. We provide more information below on the info and search icons next to the book.

Your book card has a lot more information than you’d think.

We have been adding more and more information to the book card over the years, and as a result, we ran out of space on the card.

Now, we have a new book hover that allows you to find out more information about your title quickly.

Tap the “i” icon to find out book details including ISBN, citation information, and badges for notes, highlights, and flashcards.

    My Books Carousel

Placing all books into a carousel helps to declutter the library allowing for the most recent books to be prominently featured while putting those older unused titles easily out of sight, but always available. To see some of your older titles swipe to scroll through your top 5 books. To view, all of your books, tap View All Titles. Can’t find it? Bookshelf'ssearch will help you locate titles quickly and easily.

    Simplified Library and Content Search

Previously, searching had to be done in two different places depending on if you wanted to search for a book or a term within a book's content. We condensed themfor ease of use.

We moved the library search to the search icon and combined it with the content search. To complete a content search, tap 'Search downloaded content.'

For those with a lot of books in their account, having to use two different menus to filter items properly was a challenge. So, we’ve updated and moved these features into your My Books screen.

On the All Books screen, you can scroll through all of your books in a simplified grid view in a grid view. Should you prefer to view your books in a list view, you can also do that on this panel. Collections are now prominently featured in a swimlane across the top.
