Executive Bio

Mr. Edward O. Handy III, also known as Ned, has been the President and Chief Operating Officer of Washington Trust Bancorp Inc. and The Washington Trust Company since November 2013. Mr. Handy served as President of Citizens Bank Connecticut at Citizens Financial Group, Inc. since 2010 and previously from 1999 to 2004, with responsibility for all commercial lending activity, including commercial lending, commercial real estate lending and community banking. He served as President of Citizens Bank Rhode Island at Citizens Financial Group, Inc. since 2009. He served as the President of Citizens Real Estate Finance of Citizens Financial Group, Inc. He served as the Chief Executive Officer - Ohio at Charter One Bank, National Association and Citizens Bank, National Association (alternate name, Citizens Bank, N.A.) and also as President - Ohio from 2004 to February 2008. Prior to joining Citizens in 1995, he worked at Fleet Financial Group 10 years, where he held positions in commercial real estate lending and in the managed asset division. He co-chairs the Harvest for Hunger campaign. He serves on the boards of Greater Cleveland Partnership, Invest in Children and Neighborhood Progress Inc. He has been Director of Washington Trust Bancorp Inc. since May 11, 2016. He serves as a Director of Rhode Island Foundation. Mr. Handy is a graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Urban Studies from Brown University.
