    (New UI/UX changes in 5.34)

Wickr continuously strives to improve our UI/UX workflow experience with each new release. These improvements occur when we are adding new features and functionality while optimizing the available screen layouts at hand. Wickr tends to find the best common ground and similar workflows from industry-leading applications to ensure that the learning curve for new users isn't daunting!

With our latest release, existing desktop users will notice changes when creating Rooms (Wickr Pro) and Conversations (Wickr Pro and Wickr Me) - the layout provides an all-in-one experience so adjustments such as Naming a Room (Wickr Pro), Room Description (Wickr Pro), adding/removing users, Expiration and BOR settings are all in one screen area.

When creating a Wickr Pro Room on desktop, users will still select the"+" symbol above the Room List. The next window for the Room details will be provided:

Choose a Room name & Description (optional). Establish Room settings such as Expiration and BOR.

Add users to the Room either through Contacts (usually outside your Wickr Pro Network or organization) or through your Team Directory (inside your Wickr Pro Network or organization)

After you create a Room you can always go back and make adjustments such as adding new users, setting new Expiration or BOR limits, etc. You simply choose the(i) info icon at the top of the Room.

We are always adding new features and enhancing our UI/UX within our super secure collaboration solutions Wickr appreciates our Wickr user community for bringing us new feature requests to help make our solutions more user friendly. Please keep your feedback coming! If you have any questions, please send them to !

Suspension issues can be caused by the following:

Duplicate device names on an account

    Manual account termination

    Prolonged periods of inactivity

5+ incorrect login attempts on a single device

    Duplicate Device Names

If the issue is from conflicting duplicate device names you will be able to log in, see a suspension notice, and resolve the problem by following the steps below:

Go to Wickr Settings, then the Account section.

In the device list, remove the current duplicate installation. (If a device is listed which you no longer use remove that one also.).

Uninstall Wickr, reboot your device, re-download from the corresponding app store, and log in with your existing credentials.

To prevent this from happening again:

Android Devices: During the initial login after tapping Existing Account, below the password field, for Device Name make sure a unique name is selected.

For example: If you have Home on a separate device be sure to select Work or Other for this installation.

iOS Devices: If you replaced a phone or tablet and your Wickr ID is still registered to a previous device change your device name to something unique in your iPhone Settings, General, About, Name.

    Manual Account Termination

If you terminated your username by going to your Wickr Settings -> Account -> Terminate Account, and confirmed the termination by entering your password, you account is permanently suspended and you will have to create a new Wickr ID.

    Prolonged Inactivity

If more than 6 months have passed since you have used your account, and we have released an update for the application, inactive accounts may be suspended to improve the experience of active users.

We are sorry for the inconvenience but you will have to create a new Wickr ID.

    5+ Incorrect Logins

When a device receives more than 5 incorrect login attempts, that device is suspended for 24 hours from the last incorrect attempt. This is unfortunately not removable, and you'll need to wait the suspension period out before you can login again. Touch ID and Face ID count as a login attempt on iOS devices, so please keep that in mind.

If you are a Wickr Pro user, click here: Wickr Pro Password Reset.

Wickr does not keep usernames nor any passwords on our servers, and as such cannot reset a password if you've lost it.

If your password is not accepted, your best bet is to try logging in using Wickr Me on multiple devices like Windows, macOS, Android, etc. You have up to five attempts on an individual device before it's suspended for 24 hours, so please be careful to not lock yourself out! This is by design to ensure all of our users are as private and anonymous as possible.

If your password is still not accepted after trying on multiple devices, you'll need to create a new account to continue using Wickr Me. To create a new account:

If you forgot your username, your best bet is to ask a friend you have contacted outside of Wickr (email, phone, etc.) to remind you of your username as it will be in their Wickr Contact list.

    On Ubuntu 16.04:

Download the Linux .zip file from our downloads page: https://me-download.wickr.com/#/version/me

Decompress (extract) the .zip file to your local machine.

You may already have a program installed that will install .deb files, but if not, please install Gdebi from the software center or run the following command in terminal:

    sudo apt-get install gdebi

Once you have Gdebi installed, run the following commands changing the version numbers to match the files you currently have in a terminal:

    sudo gdebi wickr-qt_5.9.4_amd64.debsudo gdebi WickrMe_4.53.07-01_amd64.deb

    Run the WickrMe.desktop file.

    On Other Linux Distributions:

First, you will need to install snapd. Snapd is pre-installed on many Ubuntu distributions, but if yours is not one of them or you have a different flavor, the instructions for installation can be found at https://docs.snapcraft.io/installing-snapd/6735

Then, search in the snap store for Wickr and choose Wickr Pro and/or Wickr Me (they both work simultaneously on one device) and use the appropriate instructions to install:

NOTE: If you have issues with Wickr after installation, please check that you have enabled permissions in the Snap Store:

On some distros, you may need to install the Snap Store using the command:

    sudo snap install snap-store

To get you started in Wickr Me, you will need to register a Wickr ID and create a password:

Install the Wickr Me app from our website, iTunes, or .

Open the app and hit the "Create Account" button

Create a Wickr ID (anonymous username - see rules below)

Create a password and enter it twice

    USERNAME AND PASSWORD LIMITATIONS:

If you do not see a checkmark next to your username, the name is invalid. Please use 4-15 alphanumeric characters only (0-9 and a-z).To protect your identity, Wickr Me does not allow the "@" sign or white spaces (i.e., space/tab/newline) so that you cannot use your real name (John Hancock) or email address as your anonymous Wickr ID.

We do not do an automatic check on usernames as you type to prevent spammers who could easily create a large list of valid usernames this way. You will only know if the username is taken after you press "Submit."

If you are missing a checkmark next to the first password, your password is invalid. Try using a combination of upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and special symbols, and consisting of a minimum of 8 characters.

If you are missing a checkmark next to the second password, it does not match your first password. Please retype both to make sure they match.

Note: Your username and password for the Wickr Support website are not connected to your Wickr ID and password. The credentials used for this site or the Wickr Pro app will come up as invalid username/password in the Wickr Me app.

    IMPORTANT Notes:

    * You only need to "Create Account" once. To add more devices to your Wickr account, please download and install Wickr Me on the target device(s), open the app, and use the "Sign In" option on the initial splash screen.

    * Currently, there is a bug that causes some devices to report a generic suspension error message instead of the correct "Username already taken" error. If you see an error telling you your account has been suspended when registering a new account, please try a more unique name (i.e., `wickruser1945` if `wickruser` gave you the error).

    * We DO NOT allow username reuse, to avoid impersonation issues. If you forget your password or terminate the account, you will need to register a new account with a new, unique username.

    Register your device:

Create new ID and matching passwords:

    Username and second password accepted:

Username and second password not accepted:

How do I adjust Burn-on-Read and Expiration?

What is Auto-Destruct?Auto-Destruct settings govern the time at which messages and/or attachments are securely destroyed. Currently, there are two settings:

"Expiration" sets the empirical maximum amount of time content may live; it starts counting when the content is sent."Burn-on-read" sets the amount of time after a recipient views the content before it is destroyed; it starts counting as soon as content is marked as "read" but will never extend the life of the content beyond the destruct time determined by the "Expiration" value.By using these values, you can provide ample time for a recipient to receive a message without compromising ephemerality. So, for example, if "Expiration" is set for 48-hours and "Burn-on-read" is set for 5-minutes, the recipient of your message will have a full two days to receive the message but the content will no longer exist on their device 5-minutes after it is read.

NOTE: If your messages are not being received or you have notifications for messages that are no longer there, this may be due to the sender setting the expiration too low. If they are setting an expiration time of 10 minutes and you check it anytime after 10 minutes from the time it was sent, you will see a notification but no message. Try having the sender adjust the expiration time to further out.The expiration is counted on both devices from the time it is sent, while the Burn-on-Read will count from the time it is "read" on the recipient's computer. Currently, the Burn-on-Read also counts down on the sender's copy of the message when it is "read" (as soon as it is sent), but do not worry! The copy of the message that the recipient has will only start the countdown when they open the conversation or unlock the message.

To adjust expiration and BOR settings:

Pro Only: Global Defaults vs. Room DefaultsWhen set from within the Administration Panel, these two settings are the global setting for all users assigned to the chosen Security Group. In the Wickr application (mobile or desktop), moderators of Rooms can set their own Auto-Destruct parameters, but they must be equal to or less than the values established within the Security Group. The same applies to 1:1 messaging of users assigned with this Security Group setting.

The Wickr Pro apps are all able to Federate (find other Users and communicate) with the Wickr Me apps, unless the Administrators of a Pro Gold Network sets up the Network for "Disabled" or "Restricted" (limited to communicating with certain Admin-set Networks).

Wickr Me, free Wickr Basic Pro, and Silver Pro Networks default to having Federation "Enabled," so users will be able to communicate with any other Me, Basic Pro, and Silver Pro users, along with any other Federated Pro Networks.

If the Pro Network you are trying to communicate with has their Federation Restricted, they will need to add your Network ID to their own dashboard under Admin Controls->Control Settings->Federation->Add ID

If the Network has Federation Disabled, you will be unable to communicate with any Pro Users on that Network.

This capability is onlyavailable if your Wickr Pro Network Administrator has enabled Single Sign On (SSO) -This new feature will allow you to sync data (Rooms, Conversations and Messages) from an existing device to your new device, or to a device that has been reset. Prior to version 5.42, you could only add a device but would not recover any previous messages on the new device. With Message Syncing, you are cloning one to an existing device (say your desktop or another mobile) device to another. You must have an existing device to implement this process, otherwise, itwon'twork.

Adding a New Device * Only available in version 5.42 or later and in conjunction when SSO (single sign-on) is provisionedand is used with Wickr

    * You must already have a Wickr account and installed on a device. Now, if you want to add another device to your existing account, using your new device, enter your credentials(sign-in screen), enter Company ID screen, enter SSO credentials (our preferred SSO partners are Okta and Google SSO), then you will see Add Device screen.

    * When you click QR Code from your existing device, you will view 'sync your message' screen. You can either sync/deny sync your messages. If you have your message syncing, then it will sync your data from existing device to your new device and add this new device to your account. If you have message syncing deny, then it will add your new device to your account butwon'tsync any content.

Another advantage of this feature is recovering from a corrupted application or device; from your corrupted device, you can click 'Reset Application' which will wipe out everything. Then you can perform a new device syncing flow. It is important to make sure you have another device available so you can sync to your corrupted device. Just follow the steps above you're now back securely working again! We hope you enjoy this feature! As always, continue to send in feedback! If you have any questions, please email

  • Managing User(s) status changes are so much easier now with the new User Status Change feature.

This feature lets any Moderator in a room know if there has been any changes to Users account.

Example 1 : If a user is removed from a network or leaves an organization.Example 2: If a user is switched from one network and added to another.

The purpose of this feature is to help Moderators know when any of the above scenarios happen, and easily remove those users from all rooms.

(Note: Friendly reminder that its always good practice to have more than one Moderator for Rooms)This is very important because Wickr is a peer to peer system and there is no centralized server control of network or room memberships.

When a Users status changes, a User Status Change message will appear in the room.

Any Moderator, designated with a crown icon beside their name, who enters that room they will be presented an option to manage those users.

    User Status Change Message

The Moderator will then be prompted to Cancel or Manage the User. Selecting Manage, will open up a list of User(s) to be Confirmed or Removed.

Selecting Confirm will keep the user in the room, selecting Remove will remove the user from all rooms"

By selecting Confirm a pop-up box will appear where you can confirm the status of the User(s) listed.

The Moderator will now be able to confirm to delete that Users membership to all rooms they appear in by selecting Remove.

Adding a contact to a room or 1:1 message is very simple and works the same way on every client.

Adding a contact to a room

To add a contact to a roomsimply click on their name within the "Edit Room" contact list. This assumes the user is currently within your network.

To add a contact from another network to a room, enter their email address in the search field. If the user is valid and active on another network, they'll be added to your contact list allowing you to add them like any other user.

    Creating a new 1:1 message

Clicking the "+"symbol next to "/ Conversations" on the left brings up your contact list, allowing you to choose a person to begin messaging.

If the user isn't currently in your contact list, you'll need to enter their name in the search box, and then add them as a contact. You're only able to add valid and existing users, and not invite using this field.

  • The difference between Wickr Pro and Wickr Me is limited to specific features; they both run off the same secure code base.

Wickr Me uses an anonymous username while Wickr Pro uses an email address as your username. This allows for password resets and verification of ownership.Wickr Me accounts belong to whoever has the correct credentials to log in to a Wickr Me account. No ownership can be verified because we do not keep personal information for any portion of Wickr Me. If a user links a phone number or email address in Wickr Me we cannot decrypt that information and view it.Wickr Pro has the following additional features:

    Video calling

    Screensharing

    Conference/group calling

Administrator controls for the network (Network-wide security settings, i.e., forcing all users on your team to keep "Require Authentication" turned on)

  • Wickr is pleased to announce Screenshot Detection! Screenshot Detection was prioritized as one of the most frequently requested features by our users!

Privacy for our users is our #1 priority. Wickr puts you in control of your messages with this frequently requested feature! Own your content and take control by setting privacy expectations between you and your contacts with this frequently requested feature!

While there is no privacy silver bullet, transparency around capturing messages enables trust and helps set privacy expectations between you and your contacts. We're introducing Screenshot Detection for our Wickr Pro users and bringing the feature back to our Wickr Me users.

Users will not have the ability to turn off Screenshot Detection. If you take a Screenshot, your participants will receive a Screenshot notification.

Screenshots will only be detected on Mobile devices but screenshot notifications can display on both Mobile and Desktop.

Screenshot notifications will include the actual screenshot taken and sent to all participants of the room/convo.

Screenshot notifications will say [User Name]: Took a Screenshot

Anonymous notifications will say Screenshot Detected

Users may not Recall a screenshot notification once action taken.

How will this affect Burn-on-read (BOR) settings?

BOR and Expiration settings will default to the maximum if the Room and/or Network settings are lower than 12 hours BOR and 6 day Expiration

When will a screenshot notification NOT be captured:

    In a room/convo settings page

    In a room/convo calling screen

    When viewing a file/image in a room/convo

    iOS Permissions

iOS does not need additional permissions.

iOS will only display the content on that particular Room/Convo.

    Android Permissions

To send a screenshot notification file, you must enable access to Storage under Phone Settings so that it can retrieve the Screenshot.

If the User has not enabled Storage permissions when they enter version 4.29 for the first time it will automatically turn **OFF** Enable Screenshots in Settings.

    Desktop

Desktop will display the screenshots from Mobile but does not have the Screenshot notification capabilities. (Mobile devices and apps provide a programmatic interface which allows applications to see when screenshots are being taken, unfortunately desktop apps do not provide this level interface. So today, we are unable to provide similar functionality).

We love hearing from our users, especially when you request features! Please keep the feedback coming!

Prior to getting started, make sure you or your IT administrator whitelists*wickr.com [email protected]. This will ensure successful and timely delivery of activation & verification emails.

    Step 1:

Download and install the Wickr app from

    Step 2:

When first opening the Wickr Pro apps, you'll see a screen like this:

    a) Find My Team allows you to discover whether or not your Team or organization has already set-up a Wickr Pro Network. If they have, you can choose "Find My Team" and register your email.

    b) Start A Team allows you to create a brand new Wickr Pro Network, and then invite others to join.

    c) Sign In is for users who have been sent an invitation email to activate their Wickr Pro client by an administrator of your Team's networkor who are logging in to a subsequent device after initial registration.

Note: Unless you are signing in to an SSO Network (your admin would have sent an email with your SSO ID), you can press the "My Company does not use SSO" button beneath the "Submit" button on the next screen:

    Step 3:

If you've been invited already and received an activation invitation email, click the Sign In button and enter your email address:

    Step 4:

If you've been sent an email like this, click the "Let's get started" or alternative link below it to verify your email address.

    Step 5:

You will be taken to a browser by the link which will attempt to automatically open the Wickr app. If you do not yet have Wickr installed or the browser runs into any other issues opening the link, you can enter the invitation code manually in the Pro app.

    Step 6:

Create and confirm a password for your account.

    Activation Completed:

You're in! You can now use Wickr Pro as everyone else is!

NOTE: To add (register) more devices to your account, you only need to use the "Sign In" option. Trying to register a second time will give you an "Invalid Invitation" error.

Short answer is - Yes! Depending on your organization's data retention & information expiration policies you can also manage your files within Wickr itself. In fact, with our ever improving & latest UI/UX design (Wickr version 5.0.x) we make locating files, much, much easier - simply go to the Search icon and choose the Files tab:

We understand there times when files need to be saved and stored outside of Wickr for users to completely manage offline - if you have a Box or Dropbox account or location where files need to be saved or accessed, you can simply do this within the Wickr application - for example:

To Send a file within Wickr Select the paperclip icon on desktop or the " + " symbol on mobile. (btw, with any file management solution you can also "share" a link for the file and copy/paste into a Wickr Room or Conversation)

Desktop: Choose Drop Box or Box and select the file you want to send in a Room or conversation.:

Mobile: Select the " + " symbol, select "Choose File", "Browse" and select the file management location you want to upload a file from:

    2. To Savea file from Wickr to Box or Dropbox, it's relatively the same process; simply select "Save As"(right click file on desktop or download on mobile then save) into your Box or Dropbox location:

    Desktop:

Mobile:Select the file, download, then upload to your favorite Box or Dropbox account/folder

At Wickr, we're continuing to improve our integrations and make them easier or more user friendly - feel free to send us your feedback on this article or any other workflow integrations you'd like to see. We love hearing from our Wickr community!

    Add Phone Number?

    Mobile:

You can add contacts by clicking on "Contacts" or the address book icon on mobile devices and searching for their username. Tapping their username will create a new Wickr Conversation and add them to your Contacts list. To make a group conversation, you must use the notepad/pen icon (iOS) or pen icon (Android) in the "Conversations" tab. After you have added your desired Contacts to the new Conversation, press "Create" to start the new conversation/group and add the username(s) to your Contacts list.

Android: Add Contact and Create 1:1 conversation from Contacts Screen

    Android: 1:1 or Group conversation

    iOS: 1:1 or Group conversation

    Desktop:

Add Contact and Create 1:1 conversation from Contacts Screen

On desktop clients, you can use either the hamburger "Menu->Contacts" or the address book icon at the bottom left to add a new Wickr Contact or search for current Contacts and create a 1:1 Conversation.

    1:1 or Group Conversation:

Click the + sign in the "Conversations" tab, enter their username in the search field, and hit "Enter" to search. If Wickr finds the Contact, you can then click on the Contact and click "Create" to start a new 1:1 Conversation. Or you can search for more Wickr Contacts to add to your group conversation.

You can remove contacts on mobile or desktop clients by clicking/tapping their profile icon, and selecting the "Block" option.

To create a conversation, see: How do I start a Conversation

IMPORTANT: Please do not try to add Wickr IDs by tapping the "+Invite Contacts" button. This is only to invite contacts to Wickr through your email or text applications individually if they are not in Wickr, yet. For more information, see: How can I invite my friends to Wickr Me?

If you're getting this error when trying to send to a contact, it can be for the following reasons:

    The user is suspended

    The user terminated their account

The user has been inactive for more than 90 days on their only device

The most common reason is because the user is suspended. Wickr Me suspensions are only for 24 hours and per device, so if the contact logs in with the right password on a new device they can begin to receive messages again.

If they don't have another device to use, they'll have to wait until the 24 hour period expires before you can send messages to them successfully.

  • The "Add Your Phone Number" feature allows you to optionally associate your phone number with your Wickr ID. It allows people who already have your phone number to find you on Wickr Me without knowing your Wickr ID. Your phone number is locally encrypted on your device so no one can see your information, but people can still search for you by the number that you opt in.

When you use this feature, we disguise your contact information with multiple rounds of salted cryptographic hashing before storing on our servers. This way, you can let your friends search for you on Wickr without revealing your contact information to us. If you choose to associate your phone number with your Wickr ID, we use a third party service Twilio to deliver a confirmation SMS to you, but that party will not receive any information about you other than your phone number, and the SMS message itself will contain no information except a confirmation link.

This feature is optional, and you can always turn it off when you no longer want it active.

To add your phone number, go to the Wickr menu->Account->Add Your Phone Number

    https://support.wickr.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000952013-How-can-I-invite-my-friends-to-Wickr-Me-

Landlines, phones with no SMS service, and some ISPs that prevent "bulk messaging" may block the Twilio SMS. Currently, we do not have a secondary verification method to add your phone number. Please let us know at [email protected] if you would like to have a different form of verification to add your phone!

NOTE: Another way you can connect with your friends is with an SMS or email using "+Invite Contacts" to send your Wickr ID to the phone contacts of your choice, to begin communicating in Wickr. You will need to give permission to see contacts to the Wickr app to use this feature.

For more information on inviting your email/phone contacts, please see:

How "Add Phone Number" works in an example where you are adding your number and your Contacts are finding you:

    1. You opt to add your number to your account (wickruserA). You add the number and verify with the confirmation text that you do own that phone number.

    2. A hashed representation of that phone number (hashedNumber) is added to your account. Now the two ways a new contact in Wickr (wickruserB) can find you; by either:

searching for your Wickr username in Wickr's "Contacts" screen or

by having your phone number already in their own address book app on their device then approving any OS "Contacts" permissions on the particular platform for Wickr.

    3. Wickr would then hash (salt to make not plain text; like encryption but one-way: it never needs to be decrypted) wickruserB's address book's phone numbers (including yourNumber). It runs through its check of if any of the hashed phone numbers are a match for any current Wickr account that has an active device registered and have opted to add their number using "Add Phone Number."

    4. Wickr will populate and add any Wickr Contacts to wickruserB's Contacts List whose hashed numbers added through "Add Phone Number" are a match for the hashed phone numbers being searched for by your potential Contacts, and whose accounts are active. In this way, wickruserB is able to contact wickruserA by knowing only their phone number, and not their Wickr ID (username).
