  • It's easy to hire a tutor

Our goal is to make your Wyzant experience easy and fair. We want to simplify the process of hiring a tutor, not make it more difficult. By adhering to these five principles, we think Wyzant will be a pleasure for you to work with.

    No commitments, no upfront costs

    Lots of payment options

    Simple, transparent transactions

    Good Fit Guarantee

    Unlimited phone and email support

    No commitments, no upfront costs

Whether you need a tutor for the whole school year or just a one-time refresher, you can use Wyzant as much or as little as you wish. You pay as you go, and you are only charged once your lesson is complete. There are no upfront costs to use Wyzant to search for a tutor, and no upfront commitments. You pay only for the tutoring services you receive, plus a small 9% service fee after each lesson. (If you decide to order a background check on any tutor, that costs $15.99.)

    Lots of payment options

Wyzant accepts all major credit and debit cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. We also accept PayPal, personal check and money order. With any of the payment options, Wyzant has two very important policies.

You agree to maintain valid payment information To ensure that tutors you hire through Wyzant ("Wyzant tutor") receive their payment after lessons are completed, Wyzant requires that you establish a valid form of payment information in your Wyzant account. This could be an active credit/debit card or PayPal account, or a positive amount of tutoring credit which, in addition to the above payment methods, could be purchased by mailing a check or money order to Wyzants Chicago office. Valid payment information must be in place prior to exchanging phone numbers or scheduling lessons with tutors. No charges are made to your account until a lesson has occurred. Please note that you must maintain valid payment information in your Wyzant account for the duration of the tutoring. If a payment method is removed for any reason, you will be required to enter new billing method before continuing to message tutors or schedule lessons.

All payments are processed through the Wyzant platform By using the Wyzant website, you are agreeing to make all of your payments to tutors listed on Wyzant through the Wyzant system. This is true for all payments related to tutoring lessons including any agreed upon travel or other compensation adjustments. Such additional payments should be negotiated between you and the tutor and incorporated into the tutors hourly rate.

    Simple, transparent transactions

You receive a confirmation email from Wyzant each time a tutor enters a lesson with you. The email shows the lesson start time, end time, subject and total charge. You also have the option of requiring the tutor to include a lesson report with details about each lesson. Any questions with the hours reported should be discussed with the tutor who can then amend the lesson details. Wyzant customer support is also available to help resolve discrepancies.

After the tutor reports the lesson hours, Wyzant charges your Wyzant account according to the tutors hourly rate plus a 9% service fee. If the amount of this charge results in a negative balance in your Wyzant account, Wyzant will charge your preferred payment method and send you an email detailing the transaction.

Wyzant charges a small fee for each lesson. This fee helps us individually vet tutor applications, so we only list tutors with the most experience and subject matter expertise. It also covers services like our US-based support team, which is available to you 7 days a week.

Unless the tutor first gets your permission to change the hourly rate, you are grandfathered in for three months at the rate that appeared on the tutors profile when you initially made contact. (Some tutors may want to adjust their hourly rates for things like travel or group lessons, but youll always be asked to confirm all changes.)

Tutors have up to seven days to enter lessons after they occur. Lessons entered beyond this one week window require student confirmation before being processed.

After adding a credit or debit card, you may see a $1.11 authentication and immediate reversal on your online statement. This authentication verifies your account but does not charge your credit or debit card.

If in processing the lesson charge the transaction fails, Wyzant will notify you and provide a period of time for you to amend or replace the invalid payment information.

Remember, when you hire a tutor, you are entering into a business relationship directly with that tutor. Therefore, please consult with your tutor about his or her cancellation policy prior to beginning lessons. Tutors cancellation policies may also be listed on their profiles. Please note, in some instances, information about cancellation policies included in Tutors public profile may not be visible to some students who participate in certain programs. Please inquire directly to tutors about any cancellation and no-show policies before scheduling a lesson. Please note further, lesson cancellations are subject to the standard 9% service fee.

If you are considering hiring a tutor for online tutoring, proofreading or other work, its important that you have a thorough conversation and reach an agreement with your tutor about the expectations of the cost and work product prior to beginning lessons.

    Good Fit Guarantee

Wyzant stands behind our marketplace. If you're not completely satisfied after the first hour of lessons with the tutor you hire, you are entitled to a refund for that hour, plus the 9% service fee. (If you request a refund after receiving more than one hour of tutoring only the first hour will be refunded, plus the 9% service fee.)

    Unlimited phone and email support

Wyzant has a staff of dedicated customer support representatives available to assist you and answer any questions that arise on any step of the tutoring process. We want to hear from you, so pleasedon'thesitate to contact our customer support team for any reason. Just call us at(312) 646-6365or email us at [email protected].

  • It is crucial that all details regarding lessons, cancellation policies, fees, and expectations be communicated via Wyzant Messages before you schedule a lesson or meet with a tutor.

In addition to normal hourly fees for completed lessons:- Tutors may charge for asynchronous work, such as editing/proofreading, as well as preparation of lesson materials, but before any work is started or completed, you should confirm all details of your request via Wyzant Messages, including agreeing to any rate changes, time limits, and scheduling.

    - Tutors set their own cancellation policies, including fees, and apply them as stated on their profiles. You should always read and understand a tutor's cancellation policy before agreeing to work with them in any capacity. Please note, in some instances, information about cancellation policies included in Tutors public profile may not be visible to some students who participate in certain programs. Please inquire directly to tutors about any cancellation and no-show policies before scheduling a lesson.

    - Tutors may charge for any time spent with a student, as well as time spent waiting for a lesson to begin if a student is late, and time spent with a student after a lesson time has concluded. You should confirm these kinds of details with your tutor before agreeing to a lesson.- Tutors may require additional fees for parking or tolls, and this information should be clearly stated and agreed upon by both parties before a lesson is scheduled.

    - Tutors may agree to purchase materials (textbooks, supplies, etc.) on behalf of a student before a scheduled lesson, and ask that the student reimburse them. This is permitted, and should be communicated prior to a lesson. Wyzant suggeststhat tutors and students be mindful about loaning each other items, as our team cannot assist in the event that an item goes missing or is not returned.- Tutors are not permitted to charge for travel within the stated travel radius displayed on their profiles. In addition, tutors may not charge per-mile or per-minute for any travel. Be sure to communicate about this information; all details about lesson location and possible changes to the tutor's rate based on location should be confirmed and agreed upon before a lesson is scheduled.

  • Tutors have the discretion to implementa cancellation and no-show policy. To protect the Wyzant brand and reputation, tutor cancellation/no-show policies should not be abusive, meaning they cannot be commercially unreasonable under the circumstances. Examples of policies that are viewed as abusive in most circumstances include, but are not limited to, a policy that charges an amount greater than the cost of the scheduled session or requires an extreme cancellation notice period, such as more than 36 hours.

To preserve Wyzants brand integrity and reputation, tutors who implement an abusive cancellation and no-show policy (and do not modify the policy) are subject to removal from the platform.

Tutors should ensure they receive clear confirmation of a lessons location and start time via Wyzant messaging before considering a lesson to be scheduled. Personal emails, phone calls, text messages, and other communication between parties regarding tutor cancellation policies that are sent outside Wyzant messaging system are not verifiable and Wyzant cannot then assist in enforcing them.

Any important information about cancellation and no-show policies tutors would like to communicate to students (e.g., cancellation notice requirements, penalties) may also be included in the Rate Details section of their public profile.

*Please note, in some instances, information about cancellation policies included in the public profile may not be visible to some students who participate in certain programs. Its important to always directly communicate to students information about cancellation and no-show policies before scheduling a lesson.

  • By registering to be listed as a tutor on Wyzant ("the website," "website," "Wyzant.com"), you (tutor) agree that the following terms and conditions will govern all payments made to you by students through the Wyzant system.

Conditions for guaranteeing receipt of payment for student lessons

Wyzant is a marketplace for those seeking tutoring services to connect with those seeking to provide tutoring services. Wyzant also provides a service to its users whereby payments will be distributed to tutors that originate from their students. Wyzant offers tutors a layer of protection in the collection of their funds but, if any of the following conditions are not met and Wyzant becomes unable to collect your payment from the parent, student, or other type of account-holder (collectively, "student") to whom you gave a lesson, Wyzant cannot guarantee that your payment will be successfully collected, processed and distributed to you:

    a) The information pertaining to the lesson is accurate. This includes the start and end time, duration, subject and student account name. Unless otherwise agreed to by the tutor and student, the start and end time will be considered to be the times of the actual tutoring lesson, not arrival and departure times to and from the tutoring location.

    b) Prior to each lesson being given, the student has on file with Wyzant a valid form of payment. This includes a valid credit/debit card or PayPal account, or a positive balance of prepaid tutoring credit. The tutor can view the status of the student's payment information through the tutor's Wyzant account. The requirement to verify payment information must be followed for continuing students as well as new students.c) The lesson is delivered in-person at a mutually agreed upon location or through the Wyzant online tool. If the lesson is delivered remotely through another medium, such as via the internet, email, telephone or Skype, or in the instance when the tutor does proofreading or other asynchronous, non-tutoring work with the student, the tutor must obtain written confirmation from the student that acknowledges the nature of the work to be done and the expectations of the time and cost required to complete the workd) The tutor's services are instructive and constitute learning, not cheating. More specifically, the tutor is not to complete assignments, write papers, take quizzes or otherwise do work on the student's behalf. Further, the services that the tutor offers must not violate the academic honesty policy or other conduct policies of the student's school, university, academic institution or workplacee) The tutor enters the lesson into the Wyzant system or assesses a cancellation fee within seven (7) days of the lesson occurring. Payment for lessons entered outside of this window cannot be distributed until the lessons are approved by the student. Lessons cannot be submitted more than thirty-one (31) days after the date of the lesson

    f) Prior to a lesson being given, the tutor has received a Wyzant subject approval for the specific subject area of the lessong) The tutor does not collect or request payment directly from the student by cash, check or otherwise, for the lessonh) For cancellation fees assessed to a student, the cancellation penalty is consistent with the cancellation policy explained directly to the student via messaging prior to the occurrence of the cancellation and also, where applicable, is consistent with the public display on the tutors profile. All lesson cancellations are subject to the standard 9% service fee.

    i) The tutor is over 18 years old and is eligible to work in the United States.

    Timing and delivery of payments

If all the Conditions for guaranteeing receipt of payment for student lessons are met, tutors can expect to receive their funds according to the following schedule. If there are questions about any of the conditions, payments may be delayed while Wyzant attempts to resolve the questions.a) Tutors using the Wyzant platform will receive their student payment by Direct Deposit. After a tutor enters accurate bank account and routing numbers, funds will be released to the tutor's bank on the 1st and 15th of each month or the following business day in case of weekends and bank holidays. In order for a lesson payment to be included during a particular period in which funds are disbursed, that lesson must be entered 5 days prior to the payment date. The time between when the funds are released by Wyzant and made available to the tutor by the tutor's bank will vary and is controlled by the tutor's bank, not by Wyzant. If a tutor's direct deposit is returned to Wyzant by the tutor's bank, Wyzant will request that the tutor correct the tutors bank information. The returned funds will be resent within five (5) days after the bank information is corrected.b) For a tutor who is eligible and elects to sign up for Express Direct Deposit, the funds will be released to the tutor's bank account five (5) days after the lesson submission. If the fifth day is a Saturday, Sunday, or Bank Holiday, the student payment will be released the next business day.

    Social Security number requirement

    a) Prior to payments made in an amount of greater than $50, cumulatively, tutors must submit to Wyzant a valid Social Security Number ("SSN"). Such payments will be withheld by Wyzant until the SSN is received, and the payments will be released with the next scheduled payment. (Although the burden to report 1099 income and meet other state-level reporting requirement is technically on the student who is hiring and retaining you, Wyzant offers students this filing service as a benefit of using the Wyzant system. To complete these filings, Wyzant needs to have a valid SSN.b) Tutors may use an Employer Identification Number ("EIN") issued by the Internal Revenue Service in place of a SSN for payment reporting purposes only. To use an EIN, a tutor must complete, sign and submit to Wyzant an IRS Form W-9.

    Calculation of tutor payment amounts

    a) Tutors set their own hourly rate and may change it at any time. Changing the default hourly rate will affect students who email a tutor after the time the change is made. Students who have been in contact with a tutor within three months prior to the time the rate change is made will be continue to be subject to the hourly rate that was listed on the tutor's profile at the time they first contacted the tutor; in order to change the rate for one of these students, the student must acknowledge the rate change via a rate change request email. b) All tutors agree to a flat 25% Platform Fee. The 25% fee percentage will apply to lessons with all students for lessons that are submitted on or after January 15, 2019 at 10:00 am Central Time. This means 75% of your submitted hourly rate will be distributed to you.c) Non-tutoring charges should be incorporated into the hourly rate. Travel, prep time or other expenses that you wish to defray to the customer must first be agreed to by the student. The mechanism to assess these charges is to adjust your hourly rate. All costs associated with tutoring students who retain you through the Wyzant platform, must go through the site.

  • There are two possible reasons why you may not be able to see the other participant's video:

The other user may have turned off their video.

When starting an online lesson, the online tool will run a test in the background to determine whether a user has enough bandwidth to display video. If there is not enough bandwidth available, the user will be automatically switched to audio-only in order to provide the best possible experience for both participants.

Star Ratings:Star ratings are a simple system of "grading" specific lessons. Students have 14 days from when you submit a lesson to add or edit a star rating. These reviews are closely monitored by our Reviews Team, which checks all submitted reviews for appropriate content and relevance to tutoring. Tutors also have the ability to respond to written feedback.

Wyzant publishes allstudent feedback, solong as its relevant to the students experience working with their tutor. • Wyzant designed a new experience specifically for students whose schools are paying for their tutoring. This experience allows Higher Ed students to more easily track their tutoring requests, view their available tutoring hours, and search for and communicate with tutors without worrying about their hourly rates.

    A Quick Tour

Once their account has been created, students can login to their Wyzant for Higher Ed account by going to www.wyzant.com/login and logging in with the username and password associated with their Wyzant for Higher Ed account.

Clicking on a specific tutoring request allows a student to view the request details, join an online session, message a tutor, or search for their own tutor for that specific request without worrying about tutors hourly rates.

Students can now search and browse for tutors without worrying about hourly rates.

The Messages tab allows students to communicate with tutors they have been connected to as well as request a session time or view a tutors profile.

The Sessions tab provides students with a view of all scheduled and past tutoring sessions across all requests. The session details page includes information about a specific tutoring session, including date, duration, summary, rating, and recording.

Students may not have tutoring requests listed on their Dashboard if they had access to Wyzant before the tutoring request functionality was released earlier this year. These students will still see upcoming scheduled sessions on their Dashboard, and all previous sessions will still be listed on their Sessions page.It is important to note that sessions only count towards a listed tutoring request if the session occurs after the tutoring request was submitted.

  • Currently, only one tutor and one student may join a lesson using the online tool at the same time.

However, if there are multiple students using the same account, we recommend taking advantage of our Family Account feature. This account structure essentially links separate accounts to a primary account where the billing information will be stored. Once a Family Account is established, multiple students can have lessons with tutors at the same time.

  • The primary account holder (the family member who will be in charge of managing payments) will need to contact Customer Support. They'llneed the email address of the primary account handy, as well as the email addresses of the family members they wish to add to their family account.

Once a Family Account has been established, the primary account holder will be able to create and add secondary accounts that will be linked to the primary account. Simply navigate to the Settings page and click "Add user".

  • Your Transactions page lists lesson submissions, cancellations, credits, and charges to your payment method, starting with the most recent activity first. You can filter activity in your Transactions table for custom date ranges.

Lessons and cancellation fees appear as lines in your Transaction history. These will have an amount in the Debit column.

Because Wyzant waits at least 24 hours to process a charge on your payment method after your tutor submits a lesson, youll see these charges on your payment method reflected in lines that are marked Purchase. These lines will have numbers in the Credit column.

When you see an amount in the Debit column, it will usually correspond with an amount in the Credit column in a row above it.

This is an example of how it will look in these columns:

The row on the bottom, with $69.55 in the Debit column, represents a lesson entry into the system. The row above it, with $69.55 in the Credit column, represents a charge on the users payment method. Because this charge was processed, the students balance after the charge is at $0.00.

The Date column indicates an items entry into our system, and might not correspond exactly to a lesson date (which will be noted in the Transaction column).

Because your Free Response is one of the first things potential students see when viewing your profile, you want to ensure that the information presented demonstrates both your proficiency and your ability to teach those subjects.

Many tutors use their Free Response to highlight their degrees, certifications, test scores, and relevant professional experience. If you have previous teaching experience, you can also use this section to share details like how longyou'vetaught, the typical age range of your students, and the context of your experience. Don't forget to share what sets you apart from other tutors!

  • This is a new way to show new students how easy online lessons are using the online tool and you can set it up right in messages. Heres how it works:

From messages, click on the computer icon at the bottom left side of the thread.

Select whether you want to conduct the demo now, or at a later time.

The student will receive a link in your message thread to join the online demo room. If you selected a later time, all of the details will be included in the message.

To join yourself, youll click on the same link in the message thread.

Once youre both in the demo room, youll be able to see and hear each other over video chat. Now you can walk through which collaboration features you think would be most helpful for this particular student. Be sure to point out any other aspects (screensharing, file sending, etc) that you think would be helpful for them.

Onceyou'vecompleted your demo, click on End Lesson to be taken back to the message thread, where you can then schedule your online lesson.

Although its not required, offering the online demo for free is a smart, short investment up front that could lead to recurring students, and save you a ton of time commuting down the road.

Wyzant reserves the right, at its own expense, to assume the exclusive defense and control of any matter otherwise subject to indemnification by Users, and you shall not, in any event, settle any claim or matter on behalf of Wyzant without the written consent of Wyzant.

    21. Arbitration

This section explains the process of resolving any disputes between Wyzant and a Tutor; Wyzant and a Student; or Wyzant, a Tutor, and a Student. All disputes shall be resolved through arbitration instead of through the courts. Specifically:

Any dispute in any way related to theSite, its use, User (i.e. Tutor, Student) conduct, or the Terms must go to binding arbitration under the provisions of the Terms. The arbitrator must apply the Consumer Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) in effect at the time you consent to the Terms. Copies of the Consumer Arbitration Rules may be obtained at any AAA office, at www.adr.org, or by calling the AAA at 1-800- 778-7879. To clarify, this arbitration provision does not govern disputes occurring only between a Tutor and a Student.

If the Consumer Arbitration Rules and this arbitration provision disagree on something, then the terms of this arbitration provision control, unless the arbitrator determines that doing so would result in a fundamentally unfair arbitration proceeding. In that situation, the Consumer Arbitration Rules control. This arbitration provision must be construed and enforced in accordance with the Federal Arbitration Act, 9 U.S.C. 1et seq.

Starting the Arbitration Process: To begin arbitration against Wyzant, you must complete a short form available on the AAA claim filing page, submit it to the AAA, and send a copy to Wyzant, Inc., Attn: Legal Department, 1714 North Damen Avenue, 3rd Floor, Chicago, IL 60647. For more information, see the AAAs claim filing page: http://www.adr.org/fileacase. You may represent yourself in the arbitration or be represented by an attorney or another representative. Once we receive your arbitration claim, we may assert any claims we may have against you.

Picking the Arbitrator: The arbitration proceeding is presided over by an arbitrator who will issue a decision (sometimes called an award) and otherwise conduct the arbitration proceeding. Wyzant and you will attempt to agree on a single arbitrator using the AAA procedures. If agreement is not possible, each party will select its own arbitrator. Each partys arbitrator will jointly confer and select a single arbitrator. That single arbitrator will preside over the arbitration.

The Arbitrators Decision: The arbitrator must base his or her decision on the evidence presented and according to these Terms and governing law, including statutory and judicial authority. The arbitrator may award the same damages and relief on an individual basis that a court might award to an individual under these Terms and applicable law. The arbitrator must issue a written decision, which must contain the essential findings and conclusions on which the decision is based. The arbitrators decision is final and binding upon all parties.

Individual Claims Only: YOU AND WYZANT AGREE THAT EACH OF US MAY BRING CLAIMS, SUITS, ACTIONS OR CAUSES OF ACTION AGAINST THE OTHER ONLY ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS, COLLECTIVE OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING. HOWEVER, A REPRESENTATIVE CLAIM (BUT NOT A CLASS ACTION) MAY BE BROUGHT IN ARBITRATION WHERE OTHERWISE MANDATED BY LAW. UNLESS BOTH YOU AND WYZANT AGREE OTHERWISE, THE ARBITRATOR MAY NOT CONSOLIDATE OR JOIN MORE THAN ONE PERSONS OR PARTYS CLAIMS AND MAY NOT OTHERWISE PRESIDE OVER ANY FORM OF A CONSOLIDATED, REPRESENTATIVE, COLLECTIVE OR CLASS PROCEEDING. ALSO, EXCEPT AS MANDATED BY LAW, THE ARBITRATOR MAY AWARD RELIEF (INCLUDING MONETARY, INJUNCTIVE, AND DECLARATORY RELIEF) ONLY IN FAVOR OF THE INDIVIDUAL PARTY SEEKING RELIEF AND ONLY TO THE EXTENT NECESSARY TO PROVIDE RELIEF NECESSITATED BY THAT PARTYS INDIVIDUAL CLAIM(S). EXCEPT AS MANDATED BY LAW, ANY RELIEF AWARDED CANNOT AFFECT OTHER WYZANT USERS.

Location of the Arbitration Hearing: There may be a hearing as a part of the arbitration process. If that is the case, the arbitration hearing will be conducted at a location that is reasonably convenient to all parties with due consideration of their ability to travel and other pertinent circumstances. The judgment of the arbitration award may be entered by any court having jurisdiction thereof.

Attorneys Fees: Each party will pay its own attorneys fees, unless the law provides that the prevailing party is entitled to have the other party pay its reasonable attorneys fees. You will bear only those costs of arbitration that you would have borne had you brought a claim covered by this arbitration provision in court. If you demonstrate to the arbitrator that the costs of arbitration will be prohibitive as compared to the costs of litigation, Wyzant will pay as much of the arbitration fees as the arbitrator deems necessary to prevent the arbitration from being cost-prohibitive to you.

Disputes Before Administrative Agencies Not Subject to Arbitration: Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in this arbitration provision, disputes may be brought before an administrative agency to the extent applicable law requires access to an agency notwithstanding the existence of this arbitration provision. Nothing in this arbitration provision: (i) relieves any party of the duty to exhaust administrative remedies by filing a charge or complaint with an administrative agency and obtaining a right to sue notice, where otherwise required by law; or (ii) prevents either party from cooperating with a federal or state body as required by law. However, you understand that you are not entitled to a double recovery or eligible to receive any monetary benefit from any action brought by an administrative agency except as required by law.

Exclusive Judicial Forum If theArbitration Provisions are Not Enforceable: In the event that a court or arbitrator of competent jurisdiction determines that this arbitration provision is unenforceable, you agree that the exclusive forum and/or venue for any dispute in any way related to the use, inability to use, or provision of these Terms is any Illinois State Court or Federal Court sitting in Cook County, Illinois. You hereby submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of those courts for purposes of any such proceeding and agree not to seek to transfer the matter to a different court for any reason.

    22. Injunction

Notwithstanding the Arbitration terms set forth herein, Users agree that any material breach of the Terms will result in irreparable harm to Wyzant for which damages would be an inadequate remedy and, therefore, in addition to its rights and remedies otherwise available at law, Wyzant reserves the right to seek will equitable relief through the court system, including both a preliminary and permanent injunction, if such a breach occurs. You waive any requirement for the posting of a bond or other security if Wyzant seeks such an injunction.

    23. Notices; modification and termination of services; amendment of terms

Wyzant may provide notice to Users via email, regular mail, or posting notices or links to notices on theSite. Wyzant reserves the right at any time to modify, suspend or terminate the services (or any part thereof), and/or use of or access to them, with or without notice. Wyzant may also delete, or bar access to or use of, all related information and files. Wyzant will not be liable to Users or any third-party for any modification, suspension, or termination of service, or loss of related information. Wyzant may amend these Terms at any time by posting the amended terms on thisSite.

    24. Governing law

This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the substantive laws, without regard to choice-of-law rules, of the State of Illinois.

    25. Entire agreement

These Terms constitute the entire agreement between you and Wyzant relating to their subject matter, and cancel and supersede any prior versions of the Terms. You may not assign or otherwise transfer the Terms or any right granted hereunder. You also may be subject to additional terms and conditions that may apply when you use Wyzant Site or third-party products or services.

  • Wyzant understands the importance of your safety. As an independent tutor, we recommend you take the following steps to ensure a secure experience.

    Conduct lessons in public

Coffee shops, grocery stores, and libraries are great places for lessons if you are not entirely comfortable going to the students home.

    Have an adult present

An adult should always be present for tutoring lessons if the student is under the age of eighteen.

    Interview prospective customers

Remember, the interview process goes both ways. Youre encouraged to ask prospective students and parents about themselves and even request references.

    Feel free to say "no"

As an independent tutor, you are never obligated to accept a particular tutoring opportunity. If something about the opportunity doesnt appeal to you, just wait for the next one.

    Keep Personal Information Private

Do not exchange personal contact information until you are completely comfortable and until the student has payment information on file with Wyzant.

Wyzant may also use location information to provide information and advertising to users. For any lesson submitted between sevenand 31 days, Wyzant will send an additional email to the student asking for confirmation, and the student can approve or reject the lesson. If the lesson is approved, the student will be charged for the lesson within 24 hours. If it is rejected, the lesson is voided. If the student does not approve or reject the lesson within14 days, the lesson will automatically be approved. Please note that all lessons will include the 9% service fee. • As of November 1st, 2018, Wyzant no longer supports payment via check. As a result, all payments made to tutors must now be made via Direct Deposit.

Youll need to enter and submit information on our Direct Deposit Authorization page. You can choose express payments, which are processed in five (5) business days or less, or have the option of receiving payments on the 1st and 15th of each month.

Tutors are free to switch schedules at their discretion. If a tutor switches from bi-monthly payments to express direct deposit (or vice-versa), all unpaid lessons will then be paid according to the new schedule.

Direct deposits are free; however, depending on your bank, it may take up to two business days for direct deposit payments to appear in your account.

You can set up or change direct deposit at any time by visiting the Payment Method page.

Wyzant uses HTTPS encryption on all pages where you submit personal information. This is a common practice on bank and credit card websites, since it keeps your information safe when you use a wireless or non-encrypted network.

  • After you give a lesson to a student, submit the lesson detailson the Wyzant platform. You may submit a lesson for payment through the website or the app, and all lessons must be submitted within seven days after the lesson has taken place. Lessons submitted within 7 days of the start time of a lesson are automatically guaranteed payment. Lessons submitted after 7 days from the start of a lesson are considered late. Late lesson submissions require approval from the associated student before payment can be scheduled, and lessons older than 31 days cannot be submitted.

Once this information is submitted, well notify the student, collect payment, and distribute your payment. Tutors must sign up for direct deposit to receive payment.

Direct deposit allows you to choose between two options, both free of charge. Semi-monthly direct deposits are made on the 1st and 15th of the month, and express direct deposit payments are processed 3 to 5 business days after the lesson is entered.

  • In order to apply for a job, you must be approved in that specific subject by Wyzant before you submit your application.

The approval process varies by subject. For certain subjects, well ask that you complete a brief proficiency quiz. For others, youll need to submit your written qualifications for tutoring that subject.

    Proficiency Quiz

Proficiency quizzes will determine your subject approval status. You will only receive one opportunity to take each quiz, so please make sure you have adequate testing arrangements, including a stable internet connection and a reliable computer. If you feel the need to review the subject, please do so before starting the quiz. Each quiz has 8-20 multiple choice questions and generally takes no longer than thirty minutes to complete per subject. You will also receive real-time results upon completion. The passing score for each quiz varies by subject; since they are designed to test competency, a perfect score is not necessary for approval.Once you've passed a subject's proficiency quiz, you may choose to supply additional written qualifications for the subject. This step is not required, as passing a subject quiz immediately grants approval to tutor in that subject. Adding your individual qualifications to a subject you are approved in, however, gives students additional information relating to your knowledge of that subject area, and can definitely help your profile to stand out.

    Written Subject Qualifications

Some subjects require written qualifications instead of a proficiency quiz. All written qualifications that you provide are evaluated by Wyzant andcan'tbe substituted with outside qualifications such as copies of your certifications or degrees. Your subject qualifications will be visible on your profile listed on the Wyzant platform and give students key information they need when searching for their perfect tutor.

It's important that the information you provide is grammatically correct and clearly presented. Qualifications should always be written in full-sentence, paragraph format. Resumes and lists are not accepted. Be sure to include details pertaining to your educational background, relevant tutoring, teaching, and professional experience, as well as your methods pertaining to tutoring the subject material. Also, please be sure that each subject qualification you submit contains unique information- multiple subject qualifications with identical information will not be accepted.

To begin, Log in and head to the Subjects page of your account.

When you and your student agree on a lesson day and time, make sure to schedule your lesson on Wyzant so your student knows exactly how to join the lesson (theyll receive emails and a notification through their Wyzant dashboard).

    Before your lesson begins:

Find a quiet place with no distractions

Use Google Chrome for the best experience

  • How does lesson recording work?

As long as both the student and tutor have lesson recordings enabled, a video of the lesson is generated automatically, in its entirety. No additional equipment or software is required. The video will follow the tutors perspective within the online lesson tool, and will include sound.

Can I view lesson recordings from the Wyzant app?

Lessons can be viewed from the Wyzant student app or the Wyzant website when logged in, under My Account -> Recordings.

When will I be able to view my lesson recording?

Once the lesson concludes, a video will be available for streaming soon after the end of the lesson. Users will receive an email containing a link to their Lesson Recordings page when the video is complete. A link will also become available on your dashboard. Please note that lesson recording videos will only be available for viewing on Wyzant, and cannot be viewed via the Wyzant mobile apps.

Can I download videos of my lesson recordings? Will my student/tutor be able to share these videos?

No. Lesson videos will be stored on Wyzant for 30 days. Videos cannot be downloaded or shared, and are available for streaming exclusively from the Lesson Recordings page. Lesson recordings MUST NOT be duplicated or stored using third-party software or devices.

Will recording slow down my lesson?

Dont worry, recording will have no effect on your lesson performance.

  • Wyzant has partnered with Higher Ed institutions to provide online tutoring to their students. These institutions are paying for tutoring on behalf of their students and each institution sets its own parameters, including eligible students, eligible courses, and hourly rate budgets.

You can read more about our Higher Ed partnerships by checking out these blog posts:

Announcing Wyzant for Higher Ed - Were now partnering with higher ed institutions

Wyzant for Higher Ed - Are partner-sponsored Students a Good Fit for You?

Below are answers to frequently asked questions related to Wyzants Higher Ed partnerships.

How does payment work for lessons with Partner-sponsored students?

Wyzant works directly with institutions to handle payment, and all partner-sponsored student accounts have payment on file. All you need to do is submit the lesson details after your lesson has concluded. As with all students you work with through the platform, you will earn 75% of your hourly rate for lessons with partner-sponsored students.

The Partner-sponsored studentI'mworking with has taken the total number of lessons covered by their program parameters and would like to continue lessons with me. How can they accomplish this?

Your student is welcome to create a personal account separate from their partner-sponsored account and place a personal method of payment on file in order to continue lessons. Please encourage them to contact our Customer Support team for assistance. After helping your student create a personal account, our team can ensure that the new account is connected directly to your own so that youre able to proceed with lessons.

I noticed that my Partner-sponsored students account is suddenly locked. Why would this occur?

Student accounts are locked for a variety of reasons. Typically it means one of two things: either the course Wyzant was a supporting resource for has ended or the student has reached their lesson limit within the universitys subsidy. Students are encouraged to create personal accounts in order to connect with their tutor and continue with lessons should they choose to do so when their institutional access concludes.

Why do some Partner-sponsored students have different rate caps/lesson allotments than others?

Wyzant supports many different higher ed institutions and often multiple programs and courses within each institution. Each has varying parameters leading individual programs to set the appropriate limits for their specific student population.

Who decides the rate cap limits for Partner-sponsored students?

Each program determines appropriate caps based on enrollment totals, student needs, and their allotment for the Wyzant resource.

Why would a partner institution decide to change the parameters for a particular program?

Each program periodically revisits their resources, deciding internally the support options provided to their student base.

How can I change my rate to work with a Partner-sponsored student?

Jobs posted for partner-sponsored students should always indicate a rate cap determined by their institution. If you would like to apply to a partner-sponsored job and need to change your rate to meet the program cap, you can do so directly from the job application. Simply select the Edit option in blue above the Submit Application button in order to reduce your rate for the student.

If the student has contacted you directly for lessons, please contact our Customer Support team in order to reduce your rate for a partner-sponsored student. Customer Support can be reached at [email protected], via live-chat from your tutor dashboard, or at (312) 646-6365. You may also contact our Success team at [email protected] to request a rate reduction.

Due to an issue currently affecting rate change requests submitted for partner-sponsored accounts, please do not submit a formal rate change request to a partner-sponsored student at this time. Instead, follow the above advice.

Are Partner-sponsored students approved for group lessons?

Not at this time. Most institutions are partnering with Wyzant specifically for the 1:1 tutor-student relationship and individualized approach.

Ive developed a long term tutoring relationship with a Partner-sponsored student. Their account was previously closed, but theyve contacted me outside the site to indicate their institution has approved them for more lessons. I cannot locate the students account on my Student Connections list, however, and their messages are still locked. What is going on with their account and are they approved to proceed with lessons?

If your messages with a partner-sponsored student are still locked and you are unable to locate their account on your list, this likely indicates that the account remains closed. Please encourage your student to have their advisor contact [email protected] to have the account reopened. Our team can only do so with confirmation from the institution. Please do not proceed with lessons until you confirm the students account has been reopened.
