Companies with the Best Intern Programs

As with almost everything else surrounding life in business, internships have also had to evolve or at least temporarily transform into sometimes virtual internships. Those looking ahead to 2022 internships can start here with these companies, which have all responded thoughtfully when we asked about what their internship programs offered and how they may have changed over the last year or so.

Can you tell us what makes your internship program special?

Our interns are called “RingTerns” because we are dedicated to making sure all our interns get to fully experience the RingCentral culture. We have internships in all our major business units and we are increasingly global, with interns in France, UK, China, the Philippines and the US. Our intern program is pretty robust, with a full day Speakers Summit, a number of activities, a Lunch and Learn series and competition activities with executive judges to finish the program. We look to convert our interns to FTE where possible.

Has your internship program shifted to remote? Can you tell us about the transition or any pluses or minuses that accompany the shift?

Our Internship has been 100% remote for the past 18 months. From our annual survey of all our interns, we can report that it was a rewarding experience for both the interns and the teams they are working and collaborating with (it helps that RingCentral is a video communications and collaboration company!). In fact, our conversion rate from intern to FTE has actually increased since we went fully remote. On the positive side, being remote is convenient for the interns and it allows people to work from, literally, anywhere. A downside is that there are group activities that are impossible to re-create virtually.

Guidewire provides interns the opportunity to experience day to day life in a global software cloud company through our summer and 6-month internships. We look for enthusiastic, hard-working individuals across the globe who are exploring possible career paths in various workstreams, including software engineering, data analytics, technical support, finance, business technology, and more. Interns apply their knowledge and skillset in a real-world business environment, working on real business projects, writing software, and engaging with internal and external customers. While focused on their work projects, interns receive ongoing mentorship and training to develop their technical and soft skills (e.g., problem-solving, presentation skills, teamwork). They also have regular social events to connect with others in their intern class worldwide; get involved in corporate social responsibility activities like our Guidewire Gives Back program; attend company events such as “Mondays with Mike,” our CEO’s biweekly company-wide Zoom check-in; and participate in Employee Resource Groups. A special element of the program is our AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) Intern Leadership Series: interns spend time informally getting to know senior leaders across Guidewire, including our CEO Mike Rosenbaum, and learning more about Guidewire, our industry, and our customers. At Guidewire, we value our interns’ contributions – what they create and produce, and the results they contribute to. We were thrilled to hire and offer full-time roles to more than 50% of our 2021 intern class. The intern program supports our growth strategy by enabling us to proactively build a diverse talent pipeline and enhance our external brand.

Has your internship program shifted to a remote one? Can you tell us about the transition or any pluses or minuses that accompany the shift?

The Guidewire internship program pivoted to a fully remote program in 2020 and did so without compromising the integrity and value of the program for our interns. We were proactive in addressing challenges that arose with COVID and we continue to adjust our program, as needed. Our priority is to ensure that our interns have fulfilling, memorable, and positive experiences in a safe and healthy environment. We ensure interns have a full onboarding experience remotely and are set up at home to be able to work comfortably and be successful. All interns receive a US$250 reimbursement for their WFH needs (e.g., desk, chair, computer monitor, etc.) Intern mentors and managers do regular checks in, especially during the first few weeks. We have pivoted to fully remote social events, such as virtual escape rooms, and have weekly virtual “coffee chats” to ensure our interns have ongoing opportunities to connect with each other and with colleagues across Guidewire. We’ve completed numerous remote intern Guidewire Gives Back events, including assembling and donating quick-release emergency paracord bracelets to first responders for Operation Gratitude and assembling STEM boxes with learning supplies to support the Boys and Girls Club of Silicon Valley. One especially positive outcome of our remote internships is that we are able to broaden our reach to recruit and hire interns from countries and regions beyond where our Guidewire offices are located. We pivoted to a fully digital interview experience and attended 30+ virtual fairs around the globe. As we look to the future, we see our intern program evolving to a hybrid model, with a mix of onsite and remote interns, to continue achieving our talent development goals and providing the best possible experience for our interns.

Our interns work on real projects that affect how our business runs, giving them opportunities to make a tangible impact on the future of our company. They also get paid to give back through seven days (56 hours) of paid Volunteer Time Off (VTO) to devote to causes they believe in.

Hosting a virtual program over the past two years has allowed us the opportunity to create an even better workplace — one that allows us to be more connected to each other, find more balance between work and home and advance equality — ultimately leading to increased innovation and better business outcomes. This coming year, our program will offer a hybrid experience, with a mix of online and in-person engagement. While we believe that “flex” is the model of the future, we also recognize the importance of human relationships and plan to prioritize ways to continue to build and maintain personal connections. We know our Gen Z candidates and recruits — with their high-tech, ultra-connected, and hyper-social upbringing — are a different breed of employees, teammates, entrepreneurs, and leaders. It’s a demographic more adaptable to change, innovation, and intentional experimentation on the future of work —which has us all very excited to engage with them in this model.

Has your internship program shifted to remote? Can you tell us about the transition or any pluses or minuses that accompany the shift?

Our internship program gives interns the chance to decide where they work. They can work virtually or be based at one of our global offices – or do a mix of both. In 2020, we temporarily closed our offices and moved to a fully virtual model to keep our employees safe. Now that we’ve started to re-open our offices, we’re letting our people choose if they want to work from one of the offices for up to two days a week or if they want to continue to work virtually. Because we’ve had a hybrid working model for more than a decade, the transition to remote work from an operational perspective was easy for us. We’ve been able to widen our talent pool and attract more diverse candidates because our internships can be completed virtually rather than in-office. This 100% virtual model option has brought added benefits by ensuring interns are prepared for their entry into a professional setting — where remote work and hybrid models are now the norms. From our last intake of interns, 40-60% of them converted to employees, with higher projected numbers expected for the end of this year.

When faced with the challenges of COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, we had to be innovative to continue with our corporate internship program virtually. To safely continue our field-based store leadership and supply chain internships, roles where in-person attendance is imperative, we delayed the 2020 summer internships until winter, and called them “winternships.” Despite this challenging environment, we surpassed goals for both offers and conversion into full-time permanent roles! We look forward to returning to an in-person internship experience in Summer 2022!

Our interns go through a week-long virtual orientation with our Learning & Development team to learn all about Vertafore, our history, our products, the Vertafore Way (our principles), and about all the teams at Vertafore. During their time with us, they will have access to classes like resume workshops, interview practice, SMART goals, and presentation skills. They also do meet and greets with some of our senior leaders, and this summer had a personal meeting with Dr. Sheryl Smith, Denver NAACP Education Chair and Professor, sponsored by our Employee Resource Group, [email protected] In addition, each intern was matched with a “buddy” to help navigate them through their summer experience with us and connect them with other peers around the company.

Has your internship program shifted to remote? Can you tell us about the transition or any pluses or minuses that accompany the shift?

Our internship program shifted to remote in 2020 and 2021. Thanks to our dedicated Learning & Development team, the transition to remote was fairly seamless. The interns went through a week-long virtual orientation instead of on-site and were given resources for how to work with remote tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc. To introduce our interns, our CEO sent a company-wide email with photos of each of them and the departments they are in. We also highlighted two interns each week in our weekly company newsletter throughout the summer and got them involved in our mentorship program, Employee Resource Groups, Employee Interest Groups, and more!
