The best way to explain an employment gap is the truth about why there is such a gap, was it a child, rehab, prison, whatever it was it will come out eventually.

Honestly. If you're employer can't respect the fact that honesty is the most important aspect of integrity then that individual will lie to you. That is a proven trait of human character. Do you want to work for someone that will lie to you?
Honesty would be the best explanation. We have hired many people with employment gaps because they had an honest explanation.
Just don't lie. Tell the truth but tell them what you have done to add value to the next job or things you did that added value to you or your career value.
