It very much depends on the specifics of the situation - some companies will only do what they are legally obligated to do in terms of allowing you to use your FMLA, etc.; others will go above and beyond to help you out. Your relationship with the company counts too - some companies will go to extraordinary lengths to hold on to superstar employees (or long-time employees, or just well-liked employees) but might not do the same for everyone.
