don't know, although I understand why health care employees and police should be drug free
I can say some companies do drug test just because it is part of some protocols. This is just my feeling to be honest. I don't have facts that can prove what I'm saying.
Companies drug test for insurance reasons. Once you hire on they prefer that you fail a drugtest if you get injured, that way they can blame the employee instead of taking responsibility for unsafe work conditions. It turns into a huge free insurance coverage for the company. People who get injured and would fail a drug test never report the injury if they can leave work and seek medical help on their personal health insurance. This keeps reported work injuries probably 90% lower than what they actually are. Thats the truth
Drug testing helps keep insurance premiums down. Plus the obvious HR related reasons. Some jobs do not test because they are small and save the expense. Or you might just be working by yourself with no need for power tools and such.
Progressive Insurance Company!
Some companies' CEO's agree with drug use. They don't really care. But others do care about drug use. They don't want their employee's performance messed with by drugs. I don't know any personal industry's. However, jobs that are paid under the table never drug test. My brother and boyfriend both work for a different person who pays cash and they both smoke weed. Neither are drug tested. Maybe find someone like that in your area?
If the job handles machinery or their actions could endanger others.
Old school thinking and probably history of failed drug test. Think the restaurant industry doesn't test.
I think it all depends on the position and the responsibilities you will have. For example if you are going to be a cart person at a grocery store they don’t seem to but if you handle money, pharmacy, construction or other dangerous jobs they do
because in some jobs and industries drugs can affect the performance on the job and even put peoples lives in danger. Construction is an example
Insurance companies demand it. Not sure
I haven't met a company that hasn't drug tested
