Two weeks notice is a sign of respect. You are giving the company a chace to replace you without making it too difficult for your coworkers.

Most will let you go as soon as you give your notice

Courtesy, an employee or employer can terminate employment at any time. However, it is courteous to grant a minimum of two weeks notice, so that the party receiving the notice can prepare for the transition.

Legally you don’t have to. Its a professional courtesy for both employee/employer. Employers ask so that they can transition the work. Since they’ve asked that of their employees, employers sometimes extend the same courtesy (when possible).

Two weeks is a polite way to leave a job but you’re not required to do so. The notice allows them to review your job responsibilities and train someone else to cover you until they can replace you.

So they have the 2 weeks to find someone to replace you and if you decide to come back to work for them they are more likely to re-hire you

I would imagine most companies would like 2 weeks so that any loose ends can be tied up. But this firm will use the 2 weeks to make your life hell. The verbal and psychological abuse intensifies for those who give their notice.

It is the right thing to do and allows the employer to prepare for your departure with a replacement and allow you to tie up any loose ends. If you new employer does not want to wait the two weeks for you to do the right thing...it should tell you something about that employer and I would move on to another one. The notice should be in writing and state the reason for your leaving (to accept waiting employment for example). This allows you to state your reason and goes into your personnel file for future reference should you want to return back to that employer.

To give them time to evaluate, train , or hire for your replacement and to go over any details of the work you have in process.
