
Depends upon the department and the level. Management can be let go on a whim or stay for decades--irregardless of their metric adherence. This is a company that is all about who you know. If you enter as an employee, stay union. I am not for a few reasons, but it will keep you safe and they do go to bat for you in cases of taking an extra minute late from break or late to report excessively. Wages are great and benefits are some of the best, but you need to be aware of your environment and your options should a department merge, be eliminated, or move. Stay current on your skills so that if you can put in for a transfer, you can make the jump and not be bought out. They just let about a quarter of the Network Technicians go from my center in particular-- a position that requires a degree, certifications, and generally several years of service.
I found that they are fairly common. However, that is the case with many large corporations. The best thing you can do is make sure you show your value to the company in several areas and not just your current position.
Layoffs are fairly common since Wireless and Wireline merged and job functions from one company joined with the job function of it's sister company.
