If you were the boss, what’s the first thing you’d change?
Thirty-three percent of people would choose to lay out a better vision and strategy, according to the latest reading of an online query by Comparably of more than 10,000 workers in the technology industry.
Improving strategy is more important than improving pay
Creating a better vision and strategy was the most common response, followed next by “improve office culture” (23%). The next most popular response was “increase employee pay” (22%), “make a better product” (16%), and “cut expenses” (6%).
By department
From a department standpoint, workers in administrative roles and customer support were the only people who ranked “increase employee pay” above improving strategy and vision. Workers in finance were unique in that they ranked “vision and strategy” just as importantly as “increase employee pay” and “improve office culture.”

By age
The only age group that didn’t rank vision and strategy as No. 1 was the 18 to 25 set — the youngest workers surveyed. Twenty-seven percent of them chose “increase employee pay,” a smidge more than the 24% who chose “vision and strategy.”

By city
At 37%, the city of Portland, Ore., had the highest percentage of respondents who chose “vision and strategy.” Boston and Chicago were close behind, each with 35% of the vote.
