Forty percent of women said they feel their gender has held them back in their careers, according to the latest reading of an ongoing query by Comparably. More than 10,000 people responded to the query.
**Note: Figures below show who responded “No” to the question, “Do you feel that you’ve been held back in your career because of your gender?”**

Departments where this feeling is most prevalent

On a department level, women in engineering (46%) and IT (44%) were most likely to feel that gender has held them back in their careers.
Women in admin and customer support (26% and 39%, respectively) were least likely to feel this way.
Interestingly, men in admin reported relatively high rates of feeling held back by their sex (27%). (The overall average among men was 12%.)
From an ethnicity perspective
African American and Native American workers were most likely to feel that their gender had held them back (32% and 28%, respectively). Caucasians were least likely to feel this way (22%).

People in the early parts of their career most likely to feel that gender is a barrier
People 18 to 25 were most likely to see gender as a career block (33%). The rate declined from there, hitting a low of 20% among people 41 to 45.
