Companies Supporting Corporate Responsibility Programs

What does a company or corporation – whose main purpose is to make money for itself, its employees, and its investors – owe the world at large? Thankfully, by dint of sheer force of good will from the vigilant US population, companies know that the good works we expect of every U.S. citizen also apply to them. If businesses like these are people, here is how these great companies carry the load and serve their consciences in the larger world.

What are some of the ways your company supports corporate responsibility programs?

“Through our corporate social responsibility program, Medela Cares, we focus on the areas where we can have the greatest impact and that align with our business priorities,” explains Annette Brüls, CEO of Medela. “For example, within our People pillar, we have set goals to strengthen diversity and inclusion efforts within our organization, as well as safeguarding human rights throughout our value chain. Within our Planet pillar, we are focused on minimizing our GHG emissions and reducing plastic waste. Through our Society pillar, we are focused on partnerships that advance our mission globally to fight infant mortality and malnutrition.”

What responsibility does a corporation have to society beyond delivering good products or services?

“As Medela has grown as a company and expanded globally, so has our desire to make a difference on a global scale,” explains Brüls. “With the full support of the board of directors, we are excited to join other like-minded companies, all driving toward the same global goals outlined within the UN Global Compact and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our goal is to go beyond our direct business, driving positive change for women and mothers around the world, protecting our planet, and thereby leaving a legacy that we can all be proud of. At First Merchants, our vision is to enhance the financial wellness of the diverse communities we serve. Supporting our communities is more than a responsibility. It is our passion. For us, social impact isn’t a campaign or a movement— it’s part of who we are. It’s the foundation of our organization, and it permeates every part of our business. Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) department is focused on elevating the communities in our footprint through five pillars of CSR:

• Employee Empowerment—We believe that encouraging our employees to volunteer in meaningful ways strengthens our teams and our community.

• Community Investments and Charitable Giving—We are proud to provide financial support to community causes that positively impact those in need – particularly those that focus on financial and economic inclusion, affordable housing, economic development, neighborhood redevelopment, and workforce training. We also take a listen-first approach to constructing community banking centers that provide direct access to a bank and bankers in areas that are economically challenged – engaging with residents and business owners to assess the local impact and need.

• Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion—We are committed to establishing a diverse, dynamic workforce. Building a team that reflects our communities’ needs makes us better problem-solvers and innovators. It enables us to forge strong customer relationships and provide insightful service.

• Financial Wellness—Financial education and advice are the first steps towards increasing financial wellness, homeownership, and economic prosperity across our communities. With this in mind, First Merchants offers financial wellness programs, resources, and online tools designed to help our employees, individuals, small businesses, and community groups achieve their financial goals.

• Community Home Lending and the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA)—We envision a future where affordable living and homeownership are possible for everyone. That’s why we have experts available to help navigate the complexities of home buying across the communities we serve. Our Next Horizon Mortgage and Down Payment Assistance programs are designed to make homeownership more accessible to all and our team actively extends credit to provide affordable housing, economic development, revitalization, and services for our neighbors in low- and moderate-income (LMI) geographies.

What responsibility does a corporation have to society beyond delivering good products or services?

By operating in a manner that is mutually beneficial for all stakeholders (employee, client, community, shareholders), we can maximize our impact, value, and sustainability. This helps us provide our communities with an employer of choice, financial services provider of choice, and dynamic community advocate. In the same manner, we are able to provide the investment community with a high-performing asset that has both longevity and long-term value. Financial institutions have an obligation to meet the needs of their diverse communities. Access to banking and capital is critical to the well-being of our communities. We have a moral obligation to provide equal access to everyone.

Sage Foundation is committed to knocking down barriers so that everyone can thrive. By unifying our colleagues, partners, and customers, we give time, technology, expertise , and investment to make an impact in our communities. This can through 3 ways:

All Sage colleagues globally get 5 days paid for volunteering days per year and they can use them to volunteer for organised volunteering or to do something to help a cause closer to their personal goals.

We understand that sometimes investment is needed and so we have a variety of grants and investments available. Sage colleagues and partners also love to fundraise through our volunteering and Sage Foundation is able to boost this with match funding. We smashed our Sage Foundation target to fundraise $2 million by 2022 at the end of last year and raised more than £640,000 to support the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, so we now have a bold new fundraising challenge for Sage colleagues, customers, and partners – to raise $5million by 2030. For each colleague who donates, Sage Foundation will match fund up to £200 a year with the money going directly to the charity.

Sage Foundation also offers technology and expertise through a number of initiatives providing product discounts training and expertise.

What responsibility does a corporation have to society beyond delivering good products or services?

We believe that corporations have a responsibility to contribute to the social and psychological development of society by inspiring and empowering communities through service that goes beyond the ambition of making a profit. This is why in the past through Sage Foundation, colleagues have been able to support victims of, forest fires in California, the drought in South Africa, and terror incidents in London.

Last year, we did 31,250 days of volunteering. Among the countless ways our colleagues got involved in serving our communities, they shopped for the elderly and vulnerable, made contributions to local communities, and helped to support job goals by lending a hand with CV restructuring.

Sage Foundation is a hallmark of Sage’s commitment to the well-being of our colleagues and society. Through Sage Foundation, all of us at Sage can be a force for good!

“Medallia is committed to helping create a world where everyone has a voice. Our social and civic impact arm Medallia.org helps us make that happen by partnering with mission-driven organizations serving the most vulnerable. In 2017, a few passionate Medallians started Medallia.org to fuel their calling for giving back. They saw a desire within their fellow Medallians to support their communities even more and amplify the impact of those already doing so. Since then, this force has expanded to include Medallians across departments, levels, and office locations. In 2019, Medallia joined Pledge 1% to set up Medallia.org as an embedded social enterprise. As we enable more nonprofit organizations with our products, we are empowered to invest more back into our communities through employee volunteering and charitable giving. Since we joined Pledge 1% (from June 2019 – March 2021), we have donated over $1.5M in product value, volunteer hours, and funding to support over 50 nonprofits globally. Medallians worldwide accomplish this by

– Donating our best-in-class technology to help nonprofits capture feedback signals from their constituents, analyze data, and prioritize actions that scale their missions.

– Volunteering approximately one thousand hours for charities benefitting a diverse range of causes, from healthcare support to closing the opportunity divide.

– Fundraising, sponsoring, and donating to nonprofits, including Black Girls Code, Black Girl Ventures, Code2040, and Equal Justice Initiative.

What responsibility does a corporation have to society beyond delivering good products or services?

“The world has moved beyond Corporate Responsibility as a way to offset the negative impacts of a business (which can lead to greenwashing), and now thinking about how does a business truly imbed giving back into every thread of the business. It is now not only the role of governments and NGOs to serve their communities, it is vital that businesses do too — especially as there is a decline in trust and confidence in the government and a tremendous funding gap in philanthropy. Consumers, investors, and employees now care about a company’s commitment to social impact. Does the business stand up for what’s right? Do they support their employees through a global and personal crisis? Is the product designed with inclusivity in mind? Is it investing in the communities in which their employees and customers work? Is it not only creating an equitable workplace internally but is it also promoting equity externally? Is the supply chain of the product as environmentally friendly as possible? These are the type of questions corporates must answer now, to keep up with the demands and accountability from consumers, investors, and employees. If you don’t, they will take their loyalty elsewhere. This profit meets purpose movement is only getting stronger.”

Giving back to the communities in which we live and work is a key part of what drives our culture at Banfield. We are not only passionate about high-quality preventive care but also about living our purpose: A Better World for Pets. Our corporate social responsibility efforts are focused on three areas: wellness of pets, wellness of communities, and wellness of our people and the profession. We partner with nonprofits, including our charitable arm the Banfield Foundation, to provide free care to pets and shelters across the country.

One of many ways we do this is through Banfield’s Shelter Animal Veterinary Discount. Intended to provide pets the veterinary care they need and remove barriers to adoption, we provided free office visits and discounted veterinary services to local shelters across the country. Banfield also offers eligible associates paid volunteering, providing them with time, resources, and incentives to put their abilities to use in a meaningful way.23 million households got a new pet during the pandemic, according to the ASPCA.

In order to be able to care for the growing number of pets, we need a thriving veterinary profession. To continue to create opportunities and inspire future veterinary professionals at every step of their academic journey, Banfield recently announced for the second year in a row a national, year-long partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America focused on impactfully engaging youth through career outreach events. Through this partnership, Banfield veterinarians and veterinary technicians engage students in their local community to inspire and educate them on the possibilities, benefits, and fulfillment a career in the veterinary field can provide. This initiative expands the reach of Banfield Pet Academy, a program established 15 years ago to inspire future veterinary professionals by introducing them to veterinary professionals in their community. Since its launch, the program is on track to reach 100,000 kids by the end of 2022 – all thanks to our caring and passionate hospital teams.
