Both employees and employers are recognizing the connection between mental health and workplace satisfaction, making mental health benefits an important part of maintaining a positive and thriving work environment. By providing mental health services, employers are investing in their employees on a larger scale and making sure they feel that all of their health concerns are being recognized. Additionally, by emphasizing mental health benefits, companies are helping to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and creating a more comfortable environment for employees to speak up regarding their concerns and get the help they need.

“There’s no question that the pandemic has had multiple layers of effects on the relationship between companies and their employees over the last 2-3 years. Initially, it created a lot of psychological stress and anxiety for safety around work, life, and family. Later, the global shift towards remote work removed geographical barriers to changing jobs, which led to a very hot labor market beginning in 2021. While that has cooled somewhat, unemployment remains at historically low levels. Employers have responded by enhancing their benefits offerings with a greater focus on wellbeing in order to attract and support their people as the working relationship has continued to evolve.” – Denis Hickey, VP Total Rewards & People Operations at Gympass

As a healthcare staffing company, we are probably more aware than most of how important mental health benefits are. During the pandemic, an epic paradigm shift occurred among many workforces around the world, in healthcare and beyond. Employees began to demand more work-life balance, whether through flexible scheduling options, well-being support, mental health PTO days, in-house counseling services and more. Multiple studies have found that employees who feel their mental health and well-being are supported at work are happier, more productive and less likely to seek employment elsewhere. In an employment market where demand for highly qualified, loyal employees is higher than the supply, providing a full suite of mental health benefits is critical for organizations who want to be seen as an employer of choice.

With the global progression of a remote-friendly approach in the working landscape, employees are now unable to unplug from their jobs naturally which can diminish the recharged version of ourselves that we bring to work. Specifically, the stark lifestyle changes the pandemic brought over the last 3 years, U.S. company-sponsored mental health benefits observed a 300% increase in service utilization. The existing need for employee mental support became overwhelmingly apparent as companies realized “employee” is only a piece of our personhood. With ample data from real-life experiences to study and report on, research has proven that offering diverse and inclusive mental health benefits increases employee performance, generates more productivity, and promotes a compassionate and understanding culture. People need to feel good to do good work, and having employees know their well-being is a priority isn’t just good — it’s good business.
