Is Your Boss Hurting Company Culture?

Culture starts at the top — for better or for worse.

In a survey of more than 5,000 employees across the tech industry, 3 in 10 said their boss actually hurts company culture. The latest data comes from an Oct. 20 reading of an ongoing query by Comparably and dovetails with another report about how most workers say having better leaders would most positively impact company culture.

A mostly even split

When asked whether their boss hurts company culture, the response between men and women was only slightly higher among women (35% women vs. 32% men).

Breaking it down further by department, men and women in business development were far less happy with their boss’s impact on company culture than any other group.

Workers aged 41 to 45 report the highest rates of feeling that their boss hurts culture

Thirty-eight percent of workers aged 41 to 45 say their boss hurts company culture, the highest percentage of any age group. Rates among workers in other age groups ranged from 32% to 35%.

Minorities are most likely to feel this way about their bosses

Forty percent of African Americans say that their bosses are a drag on company culture, followed by 37% of workers who registered as “other” and 35% of Hispanic/Latino workers.
